PRESIDENT’S REPORT
On behalf of the Lockhart Agricultural and Pastoral Society, I would like to invite and
welcome everyone to the 109th annual Lockhart Show.
Another year has passed us by, and as we prepare for the 2015 Lockhart Show, we do
so with a new committee member. I would like to welcome not only as a new committee
member, but also as our new Secretary, Mrs Jennifer He. Jennifer lives with her husband
on their property at Yerong Creek. She has many years’ experience in administration and is
already proving to be a very efficient secretary.
I would also like to welcome Mrs Shirley Morgan as our new Treasurer. Shirley has been a
valued committee member for many years, and is more than competent in maintaining the
financial health of the Lockhart Agricultural and Pastoral Society.
My attention now turns to the Committee. They are a group of hard working men and women
dedicated to organising, running and the improvement of the Lockhart Show. I would like to
thank them for all their hard work. There are also many volunteers who help out at working
bees, help set up things on show day and many other behind the scenes jobs. I would like
to thank them also for all their hard work.
Recently we submitted a grant application to upgrade the poultry pavilion and if successful,
we will build a brand new pavilion and cages. While the current pavilion has served us well
over the years, the time has come to update and upgrade. The new facility will have a more
open layout to better present the birds for judging and viewing by the public.
The other project we are undertaking is rejuvenating the sheep pavilion. We are improving
yards and swinging the gates, as they were previously held in place with wire or string. A
portable unloading ramp and race will be constructed. This will make the unloading and
loading of sheep a much easier affair for the sheep exhibitors.
Miss Bridget McDonnell, Lockhart’s 2014 Show Girl represented Lockhart at the Zone 7
final in February, which was held in Finley. I would like to extend my compliment s and
congratulations to Bridget on the way she conducted herself and spoke at the finals.
After many years as chief steward of the school work section, Ms Ellie Gowthorp has decided
to retire from this position. Thank you Ellie for your years of hard work and dedication and I
wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Last but not least, I would like to thank our major sponsor, Lockhart and District Community
Bank ® Branch Bendigo Bank. They have been a great supporter of the show for many
years.
I look forward to seeing everyone on show day and wish you all a safe and prosperous year.
Liam Smith
President

Recipe for STATE RICH FRUIT CAKE COMPETITION
Sponsored by the Australian Dried Fruits Association. The following recipe is compulsory for all entrants.
Here’s what you need.
250g (8oz) Sultanas, 250g (8oz) Chopped Raisins, 250g (8oz) Currants, 125g (4oz) Chopped Mixed
Peel, 90g (3oz) Chopped Red Glaze Cherries, 90g (3oz) Chopped Blanched Almonds, 1/3 Cup Sherry or
Brandy, 250g (8oz) Plain Flour, 60g (2oz) Self-Raising Flour, 1/4 Teaspoon Grated Nutmeg, 1/2 Teaspoon
Ground Ginger, 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cloves, 250g (8oz) Butter, 250g (8oz) Soft Brown Sugar, 1/2
teaspoon Lemon Essence OR finely Grated Lemon Rind, 1/2 Teaspoon Almond Essence, 1/2 Teaspoon
Vanilla Essence, 4 Large Eggs.
Here’s what you do:
Mix together all the fruits and nuts and sprinkle with sherry or brandy. Cover and leave for at least 1
hour, but preferably overnight. Sift together the flour and spices. Cream together the butter and sugar
with the essences. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then alternately add
the fruit and flour mixtures. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden
spoon. Place the mixture into a prepared tin, no larger than 20cm (8”) and bake in a slow oven for
approximately 3 1/2 - 4 hours. Allow the cake to cool in the tin.
Prize money is sponsored by the ASC. Show Societies and Groups should pay the prize money to their
winners, then apply to the ASC for reimbursement.
Winners at country shows will each receive a cash prize of $20 and will be required to bake a second
