Golf Association of Ontario
On March 31, 2001 the membership of the Ontario Golf Association (est. 1921) and the Ontario Ladies’
Golf Association (est. 1926) voted overwhelmingly to amalgamate the two organizations and form a
single golf association to be known as the Golf Association of Ontario. The GAO gained official status in
November, 2001.
The OGA and the OLGA represented Ontario Golfers for over 75 years. As such, the GAO inherits a long
and rich history. With over 420 member clubs and over 115,000 individual members, the GAO is one of the
largest golf associations the world.
As the governing body of amateur golf in Ontario, the GAO has an affiliation with the Royal Canadian
Golf Association. The RCGA serve a national mandate. The GAO plays an important role supporting
and promoting many aspects of the game, including a provision of services to member clubs and to
individual members as well as contributing to the “Good of the Game.”
The GAO is a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by
Volunteer Committees and Club Representatives throughout the province. Each member club has the
opportunity to designate representatives to work with the GAO and to represent the club’s interests within
the association. The strength of the GAO lies in its broad range of membership support through Ontario.
Funding for programs conducted by the GAO comes from:
• Corporate and Private Donations
• Program Participation Fees
• Corporate Sponsorship
• Tournament Entry Fees
• Membership Fees
• Grants
Programs and Services delivered by the GAO include:
• Provincial Championships
• Course Measuring and Rating
• Player Development Programs
• Support for Turfgrass Research
• Rules of Golf
• Amateur Status
• Ontario Golf Magazine
• Information Seminars
• Ontario Golf Hall of Fame
• Media Relations
• District Programs
• Volunteer Opportunities

YEARBOOK 2008

President’s Report
Over the past year, I have been fortunate
enough to have represented the Golf Association of Ontario as President. After travelling throughout Ontario and experiencing
first-hand the breadth of the GAO’s accomplishments, I can say with confidence that
the GAO should be proud of the difference it
is making in the golf community.
2008 has been a progressive year for the GAO,
with the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers
working diligently to strengthen and increase
the programs offered to amateur golfers in the
Province, while developing new initiatives to grow
the game. To accomplish these goals, the Association is fortunate to have the support of a number of
corporate sponsors that have helped the GAO make
a difference. These include our major partner, Investors Group, which continues to support our major
championships, along with Acushnet Canada, Baka
Wireless, Beck’s Non-Alcoholic Beer, Bushnell, Davey
Tree, Second Skin, and Ultimate Golf Vacations, Each
of these partners has contributed to the ongoing
success of the GAO’s programs while investing in the
future of golf in Ontario.
I would also like to acknowledge the support of
Nestle who contributed as our water sponsor along
with Westmount Hospitality Group who continued
to support the GAO as our hotel partner. Callaway
Golf Canada and Clublink have also made very significant contributions to the Callaway Golf in Schools
program that have helped expand this initiative by
leaps and bounds over the past year.
Various funding sources from the Government
of Ontario also help support the GAO’s programs.
The Ministry of Health promotion provides base
funding along with other programs which provide
resources for the grassroots to high performance
players within the long-term player development
plan created by the CPGA and the RCGA. Initiatives
supported include the 2009 Canada Summer Games
and the 2010 Ontario Summer Games for which the
GAO is currently preparing. This will be the first time
that golf is included in the Games.
I encourage you to read the committee reports in
the following pages that highlight the accomplishments and new initiatives developed by the GAO
over the past year. I would like to briefly touch on a
few exciting developments from 2008.
Early in the golf season, we celebrated the
6
YEARBOOK 2008
achievements of three new inductees into the
Ontario Golf Hall of Fame. Gerry Kesselring, along
with the late Lloyd Tucker and Lex Robson were
honoured in a memorable ceremony that highlighted the achievements of the new members while
celebrating their contributions to golf in Ontario.
We are very proud of these Ontario golfers and their
accomplishments.
2008 was a very exciting year from a Player
Development standpoint. After its initial launch in
June of 2007, the Callaway Golf in Schools program
has grown into a roaring success that will impact
more than 15,000 students in Ontario every year.
Embraced by teachers, parents and students alike,
the program continues to give children a positive
golf experience from a young age while teaching
the inherent values and life-skills that form the core
foundation of golf. The program also paved the way
for the launch of the new First Fairways initiative,
which saw a mobile cruiser visiting summer camps
and community events throughout Ontario to further connect with future golfers in the Province.
An ongoing initiative of the GAO is the support of
turf research through our annual financial donation and management support. In the past year, our
Member Clubs have had to deal with such pressing
concerns as the pesticide ban and water restrictions.
This research helps explore alternatives and solutions to deal with these issues, and the continuing
support of the GAO will benefit our member clubs
in the future.
The GAO executes its championships at a worldclass level that showcases both the broad range of
talent in this Province and our beautiful member
clubs. The generosity and support of these clubs
allow us to offer high-level venues for our Provincial
competitors year after year.
Once again, our Ontario golfers have been
extremely successful at the National Level as well.
I would like to recognize Ontario Amateur runnerup Cam Burke who clinched the 2008 Canadian
Amateur title. Ontario Amateur Champion Dave
Bunker captured the Canadian Mid-Amateur and
Mid-Master titles, while Ontario Junior and Juvenile
Boys Champion Mitch Sutton was crowned Canadian Junior and Juvenile Champion this past August.
Team Ontario also scored its first Canadian Junior
Boys team title in nine years, while the Ontario
Women’s team took home the RCGA Inter-Provincial
Team Trophy at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s
Amateur. Lastly, two GAO junior teams captured key
victories this past summer, with a team comprised of
Ontario junior girls capturing the Ruth Eller Cup and
the Williamson Cup going home with a team of Ontario junior boys. The continued success of Ontario
golfers is a key demonstration of the strength of the
GAO’s championships and programs.
I expect 2009 will prove to be financially challenging for our members and their clubs. With this
premise in mind the Board and staff took the following actions;
• Decided that it is best that we continue to
enhance and improve our programs which help to
grow the game. Cutting these drastically could save
only an insignificant amount of money per member.
• Conducted strategic planning sessions to review
our programs and direction for 2009 and beyond,
• Conducted a detailed review of our previously
completed 2009 budget removing a considerable
amount of spending which could be avoided or
postponed.
As a result we believe that we enter 2009 well
prepared for its eventualities.
In closing, I would like to specifically thank all of
our sponsors, donors and member clubs who continue to help the GAO promote amateur golf in Ontario. We truly appreciate all of your support. To our
dedicated volunteers, I express my sincere gratitude
for the countless hours spent helping to coordinate
and deliver the many initiatives of the Association.
It has been a pleasure to work with you, as without
our volunteers none of what we do would be possible. Lastly, the Board of Directors and the various
committees along with Dave Mills and all of the GAO
staff, thank you for working tirelessly to make the
GAO the successful organization that it is today.
Thank you for a wonderful year.

Committee Reports
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT
District Coordinators Committee Report
Eighteen applications were received for GAO scholarships this year. On July 29th,
the Scholarship Committee held a conference call to review the applications and
determine the 2008 recipients. It was determined that a clause regarding funding for students attending American schools will be introduced to the scholarship application moving forward. It was agreed that any student attending a
US institution where funds awarded though the GAO scholarship program are
deducted be required to return the funds to the GAO in order to avoid impact on
their NCAA funding.
In total, $32,000 in scholarships were awarded, with individual scholarships
in $2000, $2,500, $3,500 and $4,000 amounts. With the support of its generous
sponsors and partners, the GAO has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships
to dozens of deserving student golfers in Ontario. All recipients have maintained at
least a 75% academic average, are enrolled in a 4 year post-secondary institution,
are members of the GAO and are actively involved in the game of golf.
In Ontario, the fourteen Districts form the link between the GAO, its members
and clubs. 2008 saw several advancements at the District level, namely the introduction of the Intersectional Matches in the Kingston District, which we hope
will be offered to other districts in 2009-10. Another new initiative is the District
Challenges between the Hamilton, Niagara and Waterloo Districts and also the
Huronia and Owen Sound Districts. Both of these programs afforded increased
participation for GAO members at the District level. It is rewarding to see the
huge increase of volunteers working within the Districts, particularly Men and
Juniors, as they strive to develop more training programs and tournaments that
include all levels of golfers.
The District Training Programs currently being offered in Huronia, Kingston
and York Districts are being expanded to be available for all Districts to offer to
their members in the near future. We expect to have the first portion of that
program available to the Districts in the spring of 2009. It is entitled, “Learn to
Play Better”, and is a training program for Districts to offer to their 30+ handicap
players. 2008 also saw the beginning of an innovative Rules Seminar which is being developed to be offered at the District Level in Spring 2009. Also, the District
Home Pages on the GAO website offer a wealth of information about upcoming
District events, contact information and past winners.
Congratulations to Jenny Ellis who has been named District Volunteer of the
Year, 2008.
It was a pleasure for me to represent the Ontario Districts in 2008 and I’m
proud of the accomplishments the Districts have achieved; growing the game
through increased involvement for all levels of players; the training programs;
and the competition at the District Level.

Rules and Competition
2008 Rules and Competition Committee Report
Another year has been successfully completed, and most of us can hardly wait for
winter to be over so that we can get the 2009 golf season under way! Running 28
championships and 59 qualifiers kept staff and volunteers extremely busy, and
once again their considerable expertise and tremendous commitment to the GAO
resulted in another successful season.
The Committee would like to express its appreciation to the many GAO member
clubs who made their golf courses available to us. Competitors look forward to the
opportunities presented when so many of the finest clubs in the province allow us
to host qualifiers or championships at their facilities. In looking at the proposed
2009 schedule, next year will also provide some exceptional sites, and we anticipate that a number of events will fill up early.
The GAO and its members received the generous support of our sponsors, including Baka Wireless and Beck’s Non-Alcoholic Beer. The tremendous support of
Investors Group, which provides support to a whole host of tournaments, should
be especially noted. It is the support of these sponsors that allows us to provide
the high quality championships that our players have come to expect.
Two events, the Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship and the
Investors Group Junior Boys’ Championship, had lengthy weather delays as the
result of heavy rainfall. The Committee would like to commend the superintendents and greens staff at the Islington Golf and Country Club and Whitevale Golf
Club for the way in which they went about restoring the courses so that play could
be continued. The players at these events are also to be commended for their
considerable patience and understanding as we all tried to make the best of the
very difficult situations in which Mother Nature had placed us.
Nationally, Ontario golfers fared very well in 2008. Dave Bunker captured the
Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship as well as the Ontario Amateur
Championship. Mitch Sutton followed up his win at the Ontario Junior Boys’
Championship with a thrilling, come-from-behind victory at the Canadian Junior
Boys’ Championship in Edmonton. Cam Burke was crowned Canadian Amateur
Champion after his fine play in Alberta in August.
The GAO Pace of Play Policy introduced in the 2007 season was expanded to
include qualifying events in 2008. Players, golf course owners and golf course
managers were generous in their praise. Clubs which had been hesitant to host
www.GAO.ca
events because of the impact of slow tournament play on their membership have
been very supportive of the new policy. We will continue to monitor and refine the
policy, but as players become accustomed to the policy, its expectations and applications, we anticipate that the need for penalty situations will diminish. Playing
quickly and playing well need not be mutually exclusive.
As was noted last year, the use of the Blue Golf online entry system has served
us well, and they continue to improve their product. The latest improvement will
allow us to conduct player and member surveys, from which we will gather information on what we are doing well and what areas need to be improved.
Rules officials, and those contemplating getting into that area as volunteers, will
see several new looks in the coming season. Larry Longo, considered one of the
most knowledgeable rules officials in Canada, is working with the RCGA Rules Education Committee to develop a more extensive and comprehensive Level 3 Rules
Course, which the GAO will administer in Ontario. Brent McLaughlin of the RCGA
welcomed Larry’s expertise, and we are looking forward to the new look, which
they plan to implement this spring. The committee is also looking at a major revision to the RCGA Level 4 program as a part of their 2009 Rules course.
At the same time, Committee members Jim Furlong and Lee Griffin, two of our
many veteran Rules officials, have been working on a training program which can
be utilized at the club level to demonstrate, in a fun, hands on way, the application of rules in our every day rounds of golf. Jim and Lee introduced their program
to the District Coordinators in October, and their engaging banter (along with
Jim’s props) made for an interesting and entertaining session. The plan now is to
have this program made accessible to clubs in the province, with the end result
being more knowledgeable players, and more people motivated to become Rules
officials. Interested individuals and clubs can contact Sandy Davidson for more
information and to schedule a Rules seminar.
In closing, may I take this opportunity to thank Dave Colling, Tournament
Director, Larry Longo, Tournament Manager, and Sandy Davidson, Coordinator
of Volunteers, along with our interns, for all that they have done to make the 2008
competitions so successful. We as a committee take our hats off to you.
Respectfully submitted
Bob McMenemy,
On behalf of the Rules & Competition Committee

Player Development
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT
The Golf Association of Ontario continued its growth and expansion of Player Development programming in 2008 with the launch of another two new initiatives
and significant growth with our staple programs.
2008 saw many notable performances from some of Ontario’s most talented
players. The season included three National Champions; Mitch Sutton – Junior
Boys, Cam Burke – Men’s Amateur and Dave Bunker – Men’s Mid Am, as well as
two Inter-provincial team victories at the Junior Boys, and Women’s Amateur.
The Ontario Team was also victorious at the Ruth Eller Cup in their long awaited
win over Tennessee, as well as the Junior Boys’ team that brought home the
Williamson Cup.
The success of our players and programs is a testament to the focus and dedication the GAO takes with Player Development. We thank Mike, Dave, Mallory,
and our coaches Dave, Ralph and Ann for their valued support and hard work.
CALLAWAY GOLF IN SCHOOLS
As the first full year of the Callaway Golf in Schools Program comes to a close,
we are encouraged by the overwhelming positive response the program has
received. The 2008 year saw 100 schools in 23 school boards in over 50 cities/
towns across the province, our 16 golf professionals teaching the Golf in Schools
program made lasting impressions on over 15,000 students, the majority of
whom had never experienced golf before.
The GAO’s goal to include another 100 new schools in 2009 comes along with
the exciting partnership with the RCGA in the development of the National Golf
in Schools Program. The National program will include all of the elements of the
Callaway Golf in Schools program with the addition of program curriculum created by PHE and a full program roll out nation wide in the spring of ’09.
FIRST FAIRWAYS
A new first exposure program focused on community events & summer camps,
aimed at young children ages 5-9. The program introduced kids to golf using
SNAG equipment set up in the form of a child-size golf course. Children got the
opportunity to chip and putt their way through the course and the only requirement was having fun! Canadian PGA professional Andrew Cameron was hired to
run this program in the months of July and August. The First Fairways program
was very well received by over 45 sites across the province with a total of 1262
kids participating over the two month period.
WOMEN’S PROVINCIAL TRAINING PROGRAM
The 2008 season saw an overwhelming increase in applications for the Women’s
Provincial Training program, held at The Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto in late May.
The GAO received a record number of 60 applications which was narrowed down
to the 16 women selected. The two day program aimed at women with a 12
handicap or less looking to improve their skill, work with instructors and mentors
like Ann Carroll and Mary Ann Lapointe. The program includes sessions on the
rules of golf, nutrition, course management, short game testing and trouble shots.
WOMEN’S LEARN TO PLAY CLNICS
The Women’s Learn to Play program increased to 13 clinics held in 9 districts and
made lasting impressions on over 80 women. The clinics; open to all women, are
designed for the ultra-beginner who is eager to begin golfing and is not quite
sure where to start. CPGA professionals were on site to provide proper instruction and advice to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
female finishers in each age category (12 & under, 13&14, 15&16) moved onto
the finals held at Timber Ridge GC in Brighton, ON. The 2008 Jr. Skills winners are
Mark Wodz & Alyson Bangma – 12 & under, Josh Whalen & Meghan Bennett –

CANADA SUMMER GAMES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
In 2009 the sport of golf will be included in the Canada Summer Games for the
first time. The event will be held in Prince Edward Island and Ontario will be
sending a team of 6 golfers – 3 males and 3 females - all of whom are 18 years
or younger as of August 29, 2009. The Golf Association of Ontario will select this
team based on the Points Ranking System which includes a series of ranked
events over the 2008 season and concludes with the 2009 Junior Spring Classic.
The Golf Association of Ontario implemented a 2008 Canada Summer Games
Development Program, designed to further increase our chances of winning
gold. During the 2008 season the GAO hosted three camps for the players in the
CSG Development Program, the first camp was held at Orange County National
in Florida in February, the second camp was help during March break at Barefoot
Resort in Myrtle Beach and the final camp was help at the Legends of Niagara in
Niagara Falls in April of ‘08
MSAF - MARLENE STREIT AWARDS FUND
The GAO is proud of its continued support of the MSAF by managing the fund
and coordinating the award recipients. The 12th annual Ruth Eller Cup was held
at York Downs GC in Unionville, ON. The Ontario team of Augusta James, Brittany
Marchand, Taylor Schmidt and Natalie Gleadall were lead by non-playing captain
Cathy Sherk. Team Ontario came out on top, winning the matches against a
strong team from Tennessee. Natalie Gleadall and Augusta James also competed
in the Western Junior Championship at Knollwood CC in Granger, Indiana. After
a great start the girls found themselves facing off against each other in the quarterfinals where Natalie won to move onto the semifinals.

MARKETING & MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT
MEMBERSHIP
MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATIONS
Clubs with Real Estate showed a slight increase in 2008 with 423 clubs fully
registered. Non Real Estate groups remained status quo while our Public Player
Program continues to see a steady growth with an increase of approximately 14%
over last year. Our overall numbers for individual membership remain on par with
the previous two years. Marketing our Public Player Program through Public Clubs
did not achieve the success we had hoped for and we are in the process of designing new programs to increase our membership base.
The newly designed Club Member Services Handbook was a success and we will
provide updates annually to all clubs. The Handbook is provided to all new clubs
as part of their orientation package. Hole in One and Club Champion Certificates
continue to be extremely popular at the club level with 336 and 900 certificates
respectively being delivered to members in 2008.
Membership information sessions were held in Northern, London, Waterloo and
Huronia Districts this year reaching both member and non member clubs. The
club visitation process continues to be a valuable educational tool and we are in
the process of developing new presentation material to assist GAO Ambassadors
deliver our message on the many benefits of membership within the GAO.
Our Volunteer Program continues to thrive and we are working hard to develop
new communication pieces to assist in the recruitment and retention of this valuable sector of our membership. In 2008, we introduced a monthly electronic communication to all volunteers to keep them informed. 2008 also saw the introduction of our mandatory volunteer screening program - the process went smoothly
and with little disruption for anyone while insuring that the GAO continues to remain current in our ever changing world. Our plans for 2009 include a continuing
focus on establishing Club Representatives for each member club and an increased
focus on Volunteer training through the use of video presentations.
We remain strong in our commitment to growth of membership through excellent communication and services.
In 2008 the GAO conducted two surveys, a club survey and an individual member
survey, in an effort to obtain feedback from our membership, regarding programs
& services we offer. The Club survey was mailed out in July to 420 Club managers.
We heard from 122 Clubs representing a 25% response rate. The individual member survey was conducted in October with 2400 of our members’ replying.
Both survey results confirmed that course rating, the handicap system, our tournament program, our website www.gao.ca, training sessions, player development,
just to name a few are all-important to the membership. However, the key area of
improvement was in the area of communication about the specifics of all of our
programming. Our objective going forward is to communicate, communicate,
and communicate!
Improving communication strategies for the future include:
• Continuing the use of the Member Services Handbook.
• Identifying GAO club representatives & providing them with job
descriptions & what is expected of them in that role.
• Developing communications tools (online video and DVDs) related to
our programming
• Developing a rules training program that will move throughout the province
supporting the Districts, and hopefully aid in recruitment of rules volunteers.
• Assisting our member clubs who want to promote their club online with respect
to membership drives and job postings.
• Enhancing our “E-newsletter” distribution to all members including club
managers, who will hopefully drive our message to their respective members.
• Launching an “Ambassador Program”, made up of interested volunteers armed
with a short DVD presentation highlighting our programs & conduct a “Question
& Answer” session about the GAO.

WEBSITE
Our website www.gao.ca continues to show remarkable growth. With the recent
enhancements and enhanced interactivity of the new site we have surpassed the 2
million page views mark, an increase of over 45% from last year!
Similarly, in 2008, the GAO Online Auction saw significant growth. With the addition of a new hosting partner (Auction Jam) the GAO was able to raise over $28,000
this year for junior programs, which was an increase of over $6700 from last year.
SPONSORSHIP
It was a successful year in terms of sponsorship for the GAO. Although we did not
add many new additions to the portfolio we were able to increase the amount
our current sponsors invested with us this past year. Callaway and ClubLink both
increased their contributions to the Golf in Schools program in 2008 and will continue to support the program moving forward.
A new addition to the sponsorship portfolio in 2008 was the Granite Marker
Sales Program in partnership with TTG Custom Signage. As of September, seventeen clubs had placed orders with the program for over 950 markers. As a result
the GAO received close to $5000 in additional revenue for the GAO junior program
through this initiative.

Handicap & Course Rating
Handicap and Course Rating Report
Members of the Handicap and Course Rating Committee met during the 2008
season to fulfill committee mandates in the following areas:
Handicap Certification
Each member club must have a Handicap Committee whose members should
have attended a Handicap Certification Seminar. Six Handicap Certification
Seminars were held across the province this year, allowing 140 members from
80 clubs to become certified Handicap Officials. To date, a total of 997 members
from 403 clubs have been certified through this process over the past few years.
Most GAO member clubs have now migrated to the on-line RCGA Handicap Network. To date, 401 of the 426 member clubs have signed and returned the RCGA
License Agreement, ensuring compliance with the RCGA Handicap System and
enabling the issuance of valid RCGA Handicap Factors to their members.
Course Rating Teams
At this time, virtually all rating teams in all districts are rating for both men’s and
women’s ratings when they visit a club. This has resulted in greater efficiency for
the raters and better consistency in their ratings, with less disruption for the clubs.
Many course rating teams are now comprised of both male and female raters.
During the 2008 golf season, 77 clubs were rated, representing a completion
rate of 95 percent.
A team of four experienced raters represented the GAO at the USGA Calibration Seminar in Port St. Lucie in January 2008.
22
YEARBOOK 2008
Course Rating Training
The USGA issued a revised Course Rating Guide for the period 2008-2011 and
a full-day seminar was held in May to introduce the new Guide and to highlight
the changes. Thirty-eight Course Rating Team Leaders and experienced raters
from across the Province attended and rated the seminar highly.
A new course rating team was recruited for the Waterloo District and training
of that team was completed during the April to June period. The team has been
rating on its own since then.
As well, a new course rating team has been recruited for the Owen Sound
District. Training began in August and is expected to be completed in the spring
of 2009.
On behalf of the GAO may I extend commendation and appreciation to my
rating colleagues who willingly committed their time, expertise and energy to
further the work of the Committee.

Ontario Golf Hall of Fame
The ninth annual Ontario Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on May 7th, 2008 in conjunction with the GAO’s media and sponsor day at Wooden Sticks Golf Club, home of the GAO and
the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame. Three new members were welcomed into the hall; Gerry Kesselring,
Lex Robson, and Lloyd Tucker.
Hosted by CTV and TSN sportscaster Rod Black, the induction ceremony highlighted the achievements of the inductees while celebrating their contributions to golf in Ontario.
With nearly 150 guests in attendance, the ceremony illustrated the respect and admiration that exists for the three inductees. A highlight of the evening included the attendance of Gerry Kesselring,
who delighted guests with a humble acceptance speech that included anecdotes from his illustrious
golf career. Family and friends of Lex Robson and Lloyd Tucker accepted on behalf of the inductees,
sharing memories during Robson and Tucker’s posthumous inductions.
Gerry Kesselring
Lex Robson
Lloyd Tucker
Gerry Kesselring captured numerous titles in his career
from a young age, including the Ontario Junior Championship in 1945, 1946 and 1948, and the Canadian
Junior Championship in 1946 and 1947. Kesselring
turned professional in October 1953, and played on
the PGA Tour from 1954 to 1957, when he returned
home to be with wife Helga and family. Included in his
achievements are the Ontario Open in 1952 and 1953;
Ontario Open as a Professional in 1956 and 1957; the
Ontario Amateur Championship in 1949, 1951, 1952
and 1953.
Lex Robson was was the CPGA Match Play champion
and winner of the Millar Trophy on six occasions
during the 1930s, the CPGA champion in 1932 and
Canadian Open runner up in 1933. Due to his remarkable performance he received an invitation to play in
the inaugural Masters at Augusta National in 1934 but
unfortunately was unable to attend. Robson spent
time as head pro at Islington and Lakeview in the
1930s before moving to Kawartha G&CC in 1940. He
remained the head pro at Kawartha for 25 years, wrapping up his career in 1964. Lex passed away in 1976.
Lloyd Tucker is remembered as one of the best teaching professionals in Canada, having developed Gerry
Kesselring, Gary Cowan and Moe Norman, all of whom
won provincial, Canadian or International titles. Tucker
became a golf caddy at the age of eight, and by age
fourteen was the golf pro at Seagram’s French River
Golf Course. He later became the professional at the
Grand River Golf Club and in 1938, at Rockway Golf
Club. Twice he was runner-up for the Miller Trophy
match play for professionals, and in 1951 played on
the CPGA team against the U.S. Ryder Cup team for
the Hopkins Trophy.
Congratulations to all!
We continue to encourage nominations to the Hall of Fame with the appropriate literature available online or from
the GAO office. Please remember that the Hall of Fame is open year round and that we continue to accept donations to further the undertakings of the Hall.
Respectfully submitted
Ian Giles,
On behalf of the Hall of Fame Committee

Volunteer Recognition
The GAO recognizes those Directors who contribute their time and hard work over period of time. The Honorary Life Director Award is awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors, following nominations from our
Nominating Committee. Without exception, the recipients of this award have given unselfishly of their time to
promote Amateur golf and the Golf Association of Ontario and have done so over a long period of time in a
variety of ways.
Trenton’s Anna Poste has devoted countless hours of her
time to golf in several different capacities. Her passion and
dedication is evidenced by her commitment to bettering the
game in this Province for nearly three decades. After taking up
golf in the late 1970’s, the former health care employee was
already volunteering at the district level of the Ontario Ladies’
Golf Association by 1980.
Poste was immediately attracted to the fairness of the
game provided by the rules, and stepped into the role of
OLGA Kingston District Rules convener from 1980-1984 and
again from 1996-1998. She received her National Rules Certification in 1982 and has since served as a rules official at the
local, provincial, and National level including at the Canadian
Men’s Amateur and the LPGA’s Nation’s Cup.
A longtime member of Trenton Golf Club, the proud grandmother of five has served as Ladies’ Captain and President.
Organized and determined, Poste has also been part of the
Kingston District Player’s Training Program Committee for more
than a decade.
Along the way, Poste has filled significant roles in the OLGA
and the Canadian Ladies’ Golf Association (CLGA), and was
a member of the Transition Board during the amalgamation
process of the OLGA and the Ontario Golf Association. Her
experience made her an easy choice for the role of President
of the newly amalgamated Golf Association of Ontario in 2003,
after serving as First Vice President in 2002. Poste became the
first woman to serve as GAO President, and was also the first
female elected as a “C” Class Governor of the RCGA. On top of
her long list of volunteer roles and accomplishments, Poste has
served on numerous committees for both the GAO and RCGA
over the years.

Bob Heath of Newmarket is the 2008 GAO Volunteer of the Year.
A member of South Muskoka Golf & Country Club, Heath considers the time he spends volunteering with the GAO to be his
second career. Heath serves as The Chairperson of the GAO’s
Handicapping and Course Rating Committee and the Team
Leader of the Huronia Rating Team. He has been instrumental
in the training of course raters for the GAO; Heath has trained
5 new course rating officials for his team over the past three
years, and has instilled a love for the job in each of them. He
has also conducted several District sessions and on-course
exercises with teams in Waterloo and Owen Sound at several
different clubs. Involved in sports throughout his life, Heath
was the Supervisor of Referees for the Greater Toronto Hockey
League and was a referee in the Ontario Hockey League.
Heath is continually working to promote the GAO’s programs and initiatives throughout the province, teaching an
accredited Rating and Handicapping course at Georgian College and serving as Chair for a number of seminars developed
for course rating officials. Educated at the University of Toronto,

A GAO volunteer for over 15 years, Ellis has been the backbone of the Kingston District. She has consistently demonstrated
an outstanding commitment to all aspects of amateur golf, as a
member the course rating team, leading the Women’s Player Development program and serving as District Coordinator for the
past three years – and competing at the Club, District, Provincial
and National levels.
Ellis’ enthusiastic approach to leading the Kingston District
includes her ability to motivate others and find solutions to challenges that arise while searching for innovative ways to improve
current practices within the District. Working tirelessly to ensure
the continuing growth and development of amateur golf in Ontario, Ellis has been an inspiration to golfers and volunteers alike.
Helen Mcgregor
The third volunteer recognized is Oakville’s Helen McGregor,
who receives the Distinguished Service Award. McGregor’s
unwavering dedication to the GAO for more than 20 years has
earned her this award in 2008.
McGregor has been proactive in her involvement with
several different sectors of the Mississauga District. Earning her
Level 4 Rules certification, she has worked extensively to give
rules seminars while providing advice and support. She also
became a course rater, and while rating courses she would
work to secure the course for a future District event, with much
success throughout the years. McGregor is known for her
caring, encouraging demeanor and as someone who is always
there to cheer her colleagues on.
An accomplished golfer, McGregor first picked up a club at
age 47 and has since competed in many District and Provincial
events. The former District Coordinator and Chairman of the
District for the OLGA has never failed to pick up the baton
when it fell and continuously puts her heart and soul into
supporting amateur golf both in the Mississauga District and
throughout the province.

Turf Grass Research
Ontario Turf grass research foundation partnership
Over the past two years, The Golf Association of Ontario has forged a strong
partnership with the Ontario Turfgrass Research Foundation (OTRF), a volunteer
board of professionals dedicated to the future of turf research.
A registered charitable foundation, the OTRF supports scientific research of
turf culture for the advancement of the turfgrass industry, and provides funding
through donations to turf research in Ontario.
The GAO supports this initiative by providing an annual donation to the
OTRF on behalf of its member clubs and individual members. A $0.50 portion of
annual dues collected from each adult member is donated to the OTRF, further
developing turfgrass research in Ontario. GAO staff have also served on the OTRF
Board of Directors and as Advisors to the organization.
As industry forces and government regulations continue to put pressure on
various facets of golf course maintenance - use of pesticides, water, nutrients
etc - it is essential that the golf industry be proactive in finding solutions that will
maintain the playing conditions that are required, while recognizing the need to
adapt to change.
use throughout their course helping greens and fairways stay rich and green
right through the golf season.
A majority of the funds are allocated to the turf research at one of the largest
and most active turfgrass research centers in the world, the Guelph Turfgrass
Institute. Accomplished results from the OTRF funded turfgrass research projects
are shared for the benefit of the public and industry end users.
The research conducted by the OTRF is vital to the golf industry and benefits
both the golf courses and the individual members that participate in the game,
making the partnership between the GAO and the OTRF a mutually beneficial
relationship.

Some of the existing research the OTRF conducts include the development of
biocontrols and pesticide alternatives for managing snow mould, phosphorus
management for increased water use efficiency, thatch management in putting
greens, management of velvet bentgrass turf for use in reduced input golf
course putting greens, and developing organic methods for control of turfgrass
diseases and root rot in Ontario. Essentially, the results of these tests assist golf
course superintendents in lowering the amounts of pesticides and water they
