Review Quotes
Panda Internet Security 2008
Univadis - July 2008 - If you’re worried that your PC is used to visit some dubious sites (anyone with children will be nodding at this
point), then this is the tool for you, as it detected the dodgiest sites I attempted to look at (all in the name of research).
The anti-virus component is solid but not particularly fast, taking around 30 minutes to scan a 50GB laptop, but it still found some
threats which another security package had missed.
Overall, this is an impressive piece of software with its main roles, the antivirus facilities and firewall being excellent. I am
very happy to continue with this system and look forward to Internet Security 2009.
Computer Buyer - July 2008 - The suite first advised us to run a full anti-virus scan, it was very thorough and all our example
viruses were detected and disinfected. It's good value and offers convincing protection against a range of threats.
PC Plus - May 2008 - Panda Internet Security scores particularly well with heuristic detection, which picks out new threat based on
behaviour rather than signature. No other suites offered online backup by default, although Panda provides a one year 1GB offer.
Bigstarreviews.com - Apr 2008 - Panda Internet Security was one of the easiest and the best. Once installed, the program was a
very intuitive. Not only was Panda easy to use, it was one of the fastest when it came to scanning. We were able to scan our entire
hard drive in less than 15 minutes and the product was able to find and remove all of the threats buried within our computer.
The Wi-Fi intrusion detection is priceless, allowing us to see when someone tried to get in without our permission.
ComputerAct!ve - Apr 2008 - It installed without complication on our XP computer faster than many equivalent packages. It
managed to uncover and disinfect all of the virus and spyware samples we inflicted on our PC. In addition it found three behaviour
tracking programs which we were able to immediately delete.
DentalLabs magazine Mar 2008 - Three years ago Norton allowed hundreds of nasties to infect my computer, I changed to Panda
and since then there has been little to report which is as it should be. It was only when I checked its log that I found the creepies
that it had zapped for me.
KnowHow-Now.com Feb 2008 - Internet Security 2008 offers the total package of features.
Which? - Security Software “Best Buy” - Jan 2008 - 89% Navigating this effective software is simple for day-to-day use.
PC Pro - Feb 2008 Panda's antispam features were remarkably good, catching 90% of our spam right out of the box. Online backup is a
useful and distinctive feature too.
PCW Security Suite “Editor’s Choice” - Jan 2008 issue - This version of the suite adds the online TotalScan Pro
engine into the mix, delivering speedy and effective virus and spyware detection. In fact, it was the fastest here beating
some by up to a whopping 20 minutes in scan tests. Overall, it's a very impressive suite.
Recommended as “Best Buy” every month
PC Utilities “Recommended” - Dec 2007 - Panda's program detected and quarantined a large amount of spyware on our
test machine before it even finished installing. The program had no problem finding and removing virtually everything we
threw at it.
Rickysays.com - Dec 2007 - Panda Internet Security won the test hands-down, and was the only program that truly protected my system
from the malware attack (and also detected several other threats that Norton and McAfee both completely missed).
Softpedia - Oct 2007 - Panda Internet Security 2008 offers around the clock protection of your computer against all sorts of threats, both
known and unknown.
Pocket-lint - Oct 2007 - This mid-priced package comes with beefed up security and a wide range of impressive new features
CRN Tech “Scorecard 1st” - Sep 2007 - Panda packs a punch, scores big with features, performance. Panda Internet
Security 2008 truly fits the bill when it comes to desktop security suites, which is why it beat out its rivals to win the top
spot.
Panda was the only product to actively detect and repair a spyware-infected cookie during the installation process, which
occurred on what was thought to be a clean system image that was only connected to the Internet to download the Panda
product.
The product's performance was impressive: the speediest among the three offerings examined here. What's more, the product seemed to
introduce very little overhead on the test virtual machine.
WinPlanet - Oct 2007 - With its latest releases, Panda Software continues to impress. Customizing Panda IS 2008 to your needs is a
simple and straightforward process

Review Quotes
Panda Internet Security 2008
PC Advisor - Sep 2007 - In its pre-installation scan, the software picked out and vanquished over 57 threats on our test PC. Once fully
installed, it detected and removed everything we could throw at it.
One thing we do like is Panda Internet Security 2008's ability to run through your system and tell you about the vulnerabilities in your PC
and then show you exactly how to fix them.
Panda looks fantastic. Its detection rates are high, its firewall is wonderfully unobtrusive, and these aspects of the software work like a
dream.
GCN Lab “Reviewers Choice” - Aug 2007 - During the install process, the program runs an antispyware scan. During this scan, it found all 10 cookies and automatically deleted them. Once installed,
the Panda software was not less vicious in tracking down and eliminating all the viruses we had put on the
system, in addition to others we tried to implant through various means. It found every virus on the
system, so it's both accurate and fast.
PCMag.com - Aug 2007 - Virus/spyware protection is Panda Internet Security 2008's super standout: It's the first product ever to remove
every single one of my spyware samples and prevent them them from installing on a clean system. Panda's megadetection made a clean
sweep: a perfect 10 out of 10!
It swept the field once more in the spyware blocking test. When I tried installing the same set of samples on a clean system, Panda
destroyed 80 percent of them the moment I clicked on them, and it blocked the others sometime during the install process. Another perfect
10! It beats our current Editor's Choice for antispyware, Spy Sweeper 5.5.
I tried to disable Panda 2008's Firewall protection using a number of techniques that a malicious program could use. When I tried to
terminate its processes, I just got "Access denied" over and over. That's one tough firewall!
The [parental control] filtering happens at the HTML transport level, so it doesn't matter what browser you use. And the filter is tough: I
couldn't break it without disabling all access to the Internet.
Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2008
AssociatedContent.com - Apr 2008 - installing Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 did not bog down my pc or make it run any
slower. I really liked that fact! It took less time to perform a complete scan of my pc than any other antivirus or spyware program that
I have ever used. I was delighted by this product
Bigstarreviews.com - Apr 2008 - The installation process for Panda Antivirus software was a smooth process. BigStar Reviews
feels that consumers are bound to feel comfortable with this product.
Panda's Anti-Phishing technology blew us away. This feature seemlessly integrated into my Outlook program!
This technology allows you to stay safe from scams. Panda's anti-virus allows you to bank and shop online, as they say, with peace
of mind!

Univadis
July 2008
So, another year, another blizzard of updated security
software each promising to be better than last year’s product,
then described as the last word in security!
Until a year ago, I had never heard of Panda (apart from the furry
ones) but have had their internet security suite 2007 on my system
over this time. Now, I am no security whiz, but have not had any
problems with using the internet since it was installed which in
reality is the whole point.
As you would expect from new software, minimum system
requirements may mean that older systems will struggle 256MB
RAM, 270MB Hard disk space and Windows XP/ Vista with Internet
Explorer 6.0 or above. The software comes with a licence for 3
machines.
The main screen display has four panes in which the main screen displays programme status: security protection, undesired content
filters, optimization and backup, and updates and subscription. Each pane can be expanded as to see detailed status and changes can be
made by clicking on a link. Should anything go wrong, the pane turns red and shows an "Attention" message which can help you fix any
problems although the major problems is dealt with by product's regular self-diagnosis, so in reality the software is fairly autonomous.
The firewall feature of the software is excellent – mainly because I very rarely noticed it. Although they may be a very important part of
internet security, firewalls are not known for their quiet and unobtrusive behaviour. Panda's version, though, is excellent at working out
which applications should and should not be allowed. As a consequence, I was afflicted by far fewer of those mysterious ‘Do you want to
allow' messages?
Of the new features, perhaps the most interesting is the addition of Wi-Fi access detection. I have a wireless network and although it
occasionally crosses my mind as to whether someone is piggy backing onto it. The Wi-Fi protection points this out if it happens with the tool
being as effective as an encrypted network for denying intruders access. The Wi-Fi protection does warn you if somebody is piggybacking
onto your Wi-Fi network but if you have an unencrypted network, anybody can view what you are "emitting" without actually connecting to
your network and receiving a Panda warning. The encryption is not just to stop people piggybacking but also to help secure your network /
information.
The most interesting new feature is the use of the MegaDetection engine (who thinks of these names?), which is an enhanced set of
scanning tools. This is not particularly quick but it is amazingly thorough. The effect of this is noticeable almost immediately. Even in its preinstallation scan, the software picked out and vanquished over 57 threats on my PC. If you’re worried that your PC is used to visit some
dubious sites (anyone with children will be nodding at this point), then this is the tool for you, as it detected the dodgiest sites I attempted to
look at (all in the name of research). However, some of the other parental features are a bit basic including the lack of advanced scheduling
and remote configuration. According to Panda “The parental controls do not offer scheduling, as this is a social rather than security issue”
whilst the reason remote access is not offered is simply because of security-though a VPN (a virtual private network) is allowed.
The anti-virus component is solid but not particularly fast, taking around 30 minutes to scan a 50GB laptop, but it still found some threats
which another security package had missed.
Overall, this is an impressive piece of software with its main roles, the antivirus facilities and firewall being excellent. Its detection rates are
high, its firewall is wonderfully unobtrusive, and these aspects of the software work like a dream. I am very happy to continue with this
system and look forward to Internet Security 2009.

Panda Internet Security 2008 says it
offers protection from viruses,
spyware and spam in one suite.
We weren't impressed, though, when
it refused to install on our test PC
(running Vista) – it cited a conflict with
another anti-virus package that
wasn't actually installed.
It installed without complication on
our XP computer, however, and faster
than many equivalent packages.
Installation may have been quick, but
the program increased our Windows
start-up time considerably, and a full
scan of the hard disk took over an
hour. Even loading the program’s
control panel seemed to take an
inordinate amount of time.
The firewall alerted us of an intrusion
attempt but only gave us the option
to allow or block it without advising us
of the best course of action.
In its favour we found the program’s virus and spyware detection to be very good. It managed to uncover
and disinfect all of the virus and spyware samples we inflicted on our PC.
In addition it found three behaviour tracking programs which we were able to immediately delete. The
problems we encountered make it hard to recommend, though.

Panda Software Internet Security 2008 Provides More Than Just
Antivirus Protection
By: Lisa Carey
Does your computer lock up? Have files become unusable? Do you have problems accessing the internet? Or do pop ups
constantly appear on your screen making it impossible to search the internet? Do you frequently have documents you need to
save and don’t have adequate memory on your computer? Do you worry about your security when you open emails, attachments,
download and make purchases online? If so, then the Panda Software protection and repair products may be what you need to
repair and protect your computer and information.
Internet Security 2008 offers the total package of features: parental controls, anti spam, anti rootkit, anti phishing, blocking of
unknown threats to your computer, anti phishing, firewalls, identity protection, detection of the newest viruses, personal computer
“tune ups,” and an information backup system on their secure server.
First, Panda Software protects your computer from viruses, spyware, phishing, and spam. It provides your system with valuable
firewall protection. Junk mail is filtered from your email inbox. Phishing is used to trick consumers into providing their confidential
information by pretending to be from a legitimate site like a bank or well-know shopping service like Amazon.com. This software
detects the programming behind these phishing email messages and identifies them as dangerous. Internet Security 2008 also
detects the rootkit technology used in spyware programs, which are used to creep into your system undetected and “steal”
information stored on your computer as well as monitor your internet usage. This information is then used for identity theft,
fraudulent use of your information to gain employment, credit lending and many other purposes. The firewall protection keeps
hackers from accessing your computer when you are using the Internet.
The parental control within the Internet Security 2008 program allows you to restrict specific websites, with custom filters for
children, teenagers or even employees. You can designate the types of content to be unavailable as well as the pages that you
feel to be inappropriate for viewing.
You can keep your personal computer at peak operations but easily accessing your utilities to delete unwanted information such as
cookies, temporary internet files, downloads, and recycle bin. After cleaning up your files then you can “tune up” your computer by
using these same utilities to defragment your disk. Lastly, important or lengthy documents or other information may be saved
online to Panda Software’s secure online server, which with your subscription to a one year service provides you with 1GB of
server space.
The newest options to appear in the Panda Software family of products are the instant scan resources available online. Nanoscan,
TotalScan and ActiveScan Pro allows you to test your computer in anywhere between 1 minute and 1 hour depending on the scan
you choose and your internet connection speed. This product scans your computer to detect virus, spyware, malware, and adware
and then deletes them from your system as well as repairs most damage.
Panda Software offers several other products, which are mini versions of the Internet Security 2008 antivirus software, such as
Antivirus 2008, Antivirus and Firewall 2008, and Desktop Secure for Linux. These other programs use only a portion of the features
and products available through Internet Security 2008 and range in price. For the value, Internet Security 2008 is a better buy. This
company also offers products for business including provides networking, administration antivirus, malware, and spyware
protection for businesses and their operating systems. It has won awards and recognition in several countries for the effectiveness
and ease of operating its system. In the UK, PC Advisor awarded Internet Security 2007 a Gold Award, praising the quickness of
its scanning and repair systems with the use of fewer computer resources. PC World (Spain) awarded it 5 stars for the
thoroughness of its protection.
Internet Security 2008 is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista and system requirements are standard
for this type of antivirus software. Customer support is available either online or via telephone. There is no additional charge for
accessing Panda Software’s 24 hour telephone support system, when you purchase this product. A one year service agreement is
$69.95. A 30 day free trial of each of their products is available, to help you make an informed choice regarding your antivirus
software needs.

This article explains the vigorous test I used to compare
Norton, McAfee, and Panda security programs. I wanted
to find out which program was the best at defending my
system against virus, malware, spyware, and system
intrusion attempts.
The test I used
involved literally
trying to install
MalwareAlarm - a
well known malicious
infection - and then
watching how each security program handled the attack.
Panda Internet Security won the test hands-down, and was the only program that truly protected
my system from the malware attack (and also detected several other threats that Norton and
McAfee both completely missed).
You might be wondering why I would do this to my system.
Well, it turns out that half of my testing was already done for me on two separate systems,
because both Norton and McAfee did NOT protect the intrusion and let both systems become
infected with MalwareAlarm.
I used Spyware Doctor to clean it, which is great at removing these kinds of infections; but I have
found that Spyware Doctor does not protect against ongoing infections very well. I have to keep
using it to remove infections once they happen, and I'd rather use a program that will both clean
and protect against malware threats (an ounce of prevention is worth... well, you know).
Since both Norton and McAfee were unable to protect me from MalwareAlarm, I decided to do some testing of my own before making
my next security software purchase. I downloaded the trial version of Panda Internet Security and ran it through my testing gauntlet.
Here are the steps I took for my security testing:
1. First I removed Norton from my home system. Then I installed Panda Internet Security and scanned my system. Right away it
found a couple of viruses that Norton had missed.
2. Next I downloaded MalwareAlarm and tried to install it on my system. I know this sounds crazy, but I wanted to test if Panda was
able to find MalwareAlarm, and the only way to do that is to at least try to get it on my system. Besides, I knew from past experience
that I could always turn on Spyware Doctor and easily remove MalwareAlarm if Panda didn't catch it, so I had a back up plan ready,
just in case.
Panda Internet Security Protects Against MalwareAlarm and Other Intrusion Attacks:
With Panda Internet Security fully installed on my system, I went through the same steps of trying to install MalwareAlarm. It gave me
the exact results I was looking for - Panda notified me of the threat and neutralized it automatically. It refused to let it install on my
system, even though I purposely tried to install it. That's the kind of protection I was looking for (the kid-proof kind), and the kind that
I'm willing to recommend to my friends and family members.
Panda also recognized a fragmentation attack on my computer, which it completely blocked. It showed me the IP address of the
attacker, which gives me the ability to pursue their internet provider and shut them down.

This impressed me greatly, because I've been having a lot of problems on my system with hard
drive fragmentation. It turns out that I've just been under a fragmentation attack that's been slowly
destroying my hard drive. Each time I repair it, the attacker strikes again. He won't be striking
anymore, and I won't have to spend any money on a new hard drive!
Lastly, Panda discovered a hacking attempt on my wireless connection. One of my neighbors was
trying to mooch off my wifi service, and apparently was even trying to gain access to my machine
(nice neighbors I have, eh?) Fortunately, Panda shut him down and blocked his IP address.
My Security Test Conclusions:
Panda both cleans and protects against MalwareAlarm and other threats that both McAfee and
Norton completely missed. It won my test with flying colors, and is my #1 choice for full system
security protection.
I'll be keeping the full Panda Internet Security suite installed on my system to protect it from
malware, spyware, adware, viruses, and malicious Internet attacks. It's smart enough to recognize
malware threats like MalwareAlarm and destructive threats like the fragmentation attack - and the
only program I've found that's strong enough to prevent them from infecting my system in the first
place.
I've also installed Panda on my wife's laptop since it has the built-in Parental Control feature that
filters inappropriate web site content. My kids use that computer to play Webkinz and other games
during the day (especially on the weekends), so I want to restrict inappropriate web sites from their view.

This is a summary of a very detailed review, click the link above for the full detailed review
Panda Internet Security 2008 comes with a bunch of changes, but the best of them is absolutely invisible to the user. However, your
computer will feel it. It is called MegaDetection and it is a new technology for on-demand scanning.
Internet Security 2008 brings a number of features designed to protect your data all-around. It offers security against viruses,
spyware, phishing attacks, provides identity protection and anti-spam component as well as a backup utility and parental control.
What you do not see is the additional technology injected in the application: TruePrevent (heuristics) and TotalScan Pro (newest
online antivirus from Panda).
All these specifications sound good for the uninitiated and even the price sounds good (49.95 euro for 6 months' services) considering
the list of features included in the package.
During our testing Panda Internet Security 2008 cut off the Internet connection of our web browser but this was soon remedied after a
brief modification into firewall settings (our browser was not recognized by the application and was not allowed the connection).
The interface is straightforward and the moment you launch the application you will dive right in the middle of options and settings. At
a first glance it does not appear too much to configure and attend to, but a keener look will soon discover the myriad of alternative
settings that can be used to adjust the behavior of Panda IS 2008 just the way you want it.
Configuring the application is piece of cake as Preferences menu available in the upper part of the window is highly visible and its
options are easy to understand and handle. The application has pervasive options that include securing your settings as well. Thus
you can prevent access to certain sections of the software: automatic updates and subscription, protection against known and
unknown threats, firewall protection settings, Internet protection level, anti-fraud settings, anti-spam protection and Web content
control. Actually you can lock the access to all important settings of the software.
Just like most protection software, Panda will display its warnings in pop ups. However, too many of them may become intrusive to
the user. That is why Panda Internet Security 2008 allows the user to configure which non-critical messages shall be displayed.
Heuristics detection (detection of unknown threats viruses, worms, spyware, etc.) via TruPrevent technology is also configurable and
its results are obtained through a behavioral analysis that supervises the execution of all processes in order to detect and block
malware.
Given the abundant technology (MegaDetection and TruPrevent) injected into the application in order to detect and, equally important,
eliminate the threats we have subjected Panda Internet Security 2008 to some tests of our own.
With our basic malware sample collection Panda recorded a score of 86% in detecting and eliminating our threats. It could have been
better, but this result is not too shabby either. Making it face a tougher crowd of malware Panda Internet Security 2008 dropped its
detection and elimination rate to 63% with 28 eliminated items and for another 40 of them I received an infection notification, out of 93
samples. Both collections contained a wide range of malware varying from viruses, worms, trojans, exploits and backdoors to email
flooders, rootkits, spoofers and sniffers.
Although at the second test the detection and elimination ratio of the application registered a serious drop it provides the user the
complete path to the infected file and you can delete it manually. Unfortunately there is no option for Panda to take you to the file or
open the folder containing the file automatically.
Although the antivirus did not put up too good of a fight in our second test, a home user will be content by the efficiency of the
detection and elimination.
One step ahead.

The firewall included in Panda suite is pretty good as it offers options for specifying the applications that can access the Internet. This
feature of the suite does a great job as it is unobtrusive and can detect legit applications that need Internet connection like web
browsers (of course, not all of them are recognized, but you will not have a problem with Firefox, IE or Opera), instant messengers or
email clients.
Advanced settings permit defining the ports for the apps to connect to the Internet and specify if external connections to the program
are allowed or not.
Panda Internet Security firewall is perfectly capable of notifying you of intrusion attempts (very useful in the case of Wi-Fi connection),
letting you choose between granting access to the new device or blocking it. It turns out that this feature is extremely easy to use and
it will not bother you too much. Simply add the applications that need Internet connection for everything to work like a charm.
For a view at the traffic on your computer simply open network activity from Security Protection menu. You will be displayed a list with
all programs that are currently using your bandwidth. Wi Fi connections that have received your permission to connect to your PC are
also displayed, but in a separate list.
One important feature is that none of Panda-related processes displayed in Task Manager could be turned off. The message at this
attempt was invariably: Access is denied. This comes as a good thing as malevolent processes will attempt a breakdown of your
protection in vain.
Anti-Spam Protection
Panda Internet Security 2008 comes equipped with anti-spam solutions in order to keep that plethora of junk mail away from your
inbox. There aren't too many options available for this instrument as it does its job automatically at receiving email messages. You can
create a list of email addresses and/or domains that should not be scanned for spam and accepted without any verification.
Panda will learn in time to make a better difference between spam and legitimate mail as you train it as you receive mail. Plus the
button at the end of the message allows you to change the way Panda Internet Security 2008 marks received emails: if it has
mislabeled an item you can correct it through the button available in the message body.
Backup and Optimization
Besides protection options the all-around suite also comes with optimization and backup options for the user to maintain the computer
in tip top shape and keep important data protected.
Making backup copies is fairly easy, especially that the built-in wizard will guide you through all the steps of the process. You can
make a backup both by file types and by folders with the same ease. After all the items have been selected the program allows
making a scheduled copy of the files or an unscheduled one (you have to launch the process manually).
Backup copies can be protected by a password to ensure the security and prevent opening them by unauthorized persons. Once all
these settings are finished the process will begin automatically if it is a scheduled one or you can start it manually from "Launch Now"
button.
Users can set an expiration date for backup copies and set a storing destination. There is nothing special about the process except
for the online backup of your files. But there is a catch for this: you benefit from a free online backup service for one year with only
1GB of space at Docoom.
As most backup utilities on the market Panda Internet Security 2008 allows the user to save the copy of the files on disk with
absolutely no problem. After creating the backup job you can launch it to be saved either in a location on the computer or, better yet
on a CD/DVD media.
Restoring the files can be done both from copies stored on hard disk or on a CD/DVD, in original location or a new one. The
application will make any trouble in this sense and comply to your wish. What is great is that you can browse the backup copy and
restore only the files you need and not the entire backup.
Optimization options available in Panda Internet Security 2008 are quite modest in alternatives. Users can clean up the computer (of
junk files located in Recycle Bin, delete fragments of lost files, known log files, Windows temporaries, IE history, cookies and
temporary files) and perform a defragmentation of the files to improve performance. Other than these two options there is absolutely
nothing else to contribute to an improved PC performance.
One step ahead.

However, the suite comes with an ace up its sleeve. This is the scheduling option that turns the cleaning process into an automatic job
you set and forget about. You can customize the clean up and add as many jobs as you want. Unfortunately you can only set it to take
place at a certain time interval in days.
Panda Internet Security 2008 represents a good way to protect your computer from known and unknown threats, despite the results
of the test with the second malware database. The truth is that this collection of malware is quite tough to swallow by most anti-virus
softwares.
The Good
Panda Internet Security 2008 offers around the clock protection of your computer against all sorts of threats, both known and
unknown.
The firewall included in the suite is easy to handle even for an uninitiated user and does a good job with monitoring the ports and
protocols and restricting Internet access to user defined applications.
Vulnerability detection helps keeping your computer up to date and without exploit doors. The application will try to fix the problem and
if it can't it will show you the steps to solve the problem.
Users can make backups to important data and save it either on hard disk or on a CD/DVD. More than this backups can be scheduled
to take place at a certain time of the day.
The Bad
Though the general conclusion on scanning is good, the application could use some improvements in malware elimination process.
Scan window does not offer any options except viewing the report of the process. There is no context menu and all notifications
regarding malware infection have to be dealt with manually. I wish there was an option to open the folder containing infected file or a
link to a tool that removes the infection safely from user's computer.
The interface is the last thing on the list, but it could use some retouching, especially secondary windows.
After a restart of automatic protection Status window was all red as all the features were deactivated and I had to enable them
manually (on both Vista and XP). But I have to say that a computer restart did not cause the same problems and all features were
active.
The Truth
All in all antivirus properties of the software are good but still do not compare with the abilities of other similar applications on the
market. There is still enough room for improvement and it seems that the first steps in this sense have been taken. It still has some
difficulties with removing all detected malware and Safe Disk feature is indeed an asset (which can be improved by allowing deletion
of detected malware on NTFS formatted drives).
According to my testing results Panda Internet Security 2008 is still in need for improvements, especially for Vista equipped
machines. But it'll make for a good security measure on an XP.
Antivirus, firewall and creating backup copies remain the best features of the application. Scheduling options are available for
practically all tools in the suite save anti-spam, firewall and defragmentation.
The application can show you visual statistics of a number of blocked threats and spam. The report is accurate and you can see from
a glance the types of malware you have been protected against.

This mid-priced package comes with beefed up security and a wide range of impressive new features
Full review
16 October 2007 - It’s the time of year when internet security suites start to appear in mass numbers, all of them
boasting new features for the coming year ahead. This latest version of Panda Internet Security is a mid-priced offering,
as the £43 asking price allows you to install it on three machines before you need to acquire any more licenses.
We’ve grown accustomed to security suites having a fairly intuitive and easy-to-use interface these days but this isn’t
the case with Panda, as the inexperienced user won’t find it intuitive or that easy to use. However, once you get the
hand of navigating the set-up screen, you’ll be sure of what the package offers.
The most interesting new feature is the use of the MegaDetection engine, which is an enhanced set of scanning tools,
which made their first appearance as part of Panda’s online service. The new engine isn’t as quick as that of
BitDefender or even Norton's 360 products but it’s amazingly thorough. If you’re worried that your PC is used to visit
some dubious sites, then this is the tool for you, as it detected everything we set-up.
It’s not only the scanning that is impressive, as there is also the firewall. It proved easier than most to set-up but far
more appealing is the fact it sits in the background and doesn’t prompt you every time an application tries to access the
Internet, which is a fault of far too many suites.
Of the new features, perhaps the most interesting is the addition of Wi-Fi access detection. If you’ve set up a wireless
network in your home, there is little way of knowing if it’s been accessed, except by configuring the encryption correctly.
The new tools aren’t really any more secure than an encrypted network but knowing that someone is trying to log on is
half the battle.
It’s not all good news, though, as there are a number of features that are supposed to offer greater value for money.
The parental tools are a case in point, being a little basic for our liking. Also, the backup tools offer little more than what
you’ll find in Windows Vista. Much better are the PC optimization tools, which help improve the overall performance of
your PC or notebook.
VERDICT
Sadly, what lets Panda Internet Security 2008 down are the extra tools that are supposed to bring a wider variety of
usability to the package.
However, Panda Internet Security 2008 is excellent at its core competencies that of being a powerful scanning and
firewall tool. While it’s not the cheapest or fastest out there, it’s well worth the asking price.

Desktop security, especially for stand-alone and mobile systems, has become one of the most critical applications for
today's PCs. While everyone knows the need for security to protect systems is high, very few understand how far that
protection needs to go to guard users. Systems today are susceptible to a broad array of threats and attacks that range far
beyond the viruses and worms of yesteryear. The environment has evolved to include phishing attacks, spam, pharming,
zombies, spyware, adware, trojans and much, much more.
VARs have turned to a variety of tools to protect their customers' systems, while system builders have begun to bundle in
security software with their offerings. Today, you can purchase desktop security solutions piece by piece or go with the
"suite" approach, an amalgamation of various tools in a unified security product.
There are numerous suites on the market, so picking just a handful to look at was a challenge for CRN Test Center
engineers, who decided to focus on the "up-and-comers" that
have made recent investments to grow their channel
presences while still being considered alternatives to the
industry leaders. With those criteria in mind, engineers pared
the field down to products from Grisoft, Kaspersky Lab and
Panda Security.
All three products have been tested by independent antivirus
laboratories and have the expected certifications, such as
those from ICSA Labs among some others. Those
organizations and certifications add credibility to a security
product's capabilities and should be considered a good
starting point when doing an evaluation.
That said, Test Center engineers measured the performance
impact of each product on a test system. Each of the products
was tested on a virtual machine with identical environments.
PassMark was used to grade the performance of the virtual
machine before each product was installed. After the
installation of each product, using default settings, PassMark
was used again to test if there was any impact on the virtual
machine's performance by the security suite.

In addition, engineers evaluated the products based on features, ease of use, installation, profit potential and upgrade
potential.
Panda Internet Security 2008
Panda Security is a company going through changes. Until a short time ago, it was a publicly held entity called Panda
Software.
The powers that be decided to take the company private and rebrand it as a security vendor. Why should any of that matter?
For VARs it could prove to be a big deal: By becoming a private security solutions company, Panda is now turning to the
channel to fuel its success.
Test Center engineers evaluated the newly released Panda Internet Security 2008. The product truly fits the bill when it
comes to desktop security suites, which is why it beat out its rivals to win the top spot. Users will find antivirus, antispam and
antispyware included and managed by a single management console. What's more, the product includes a backup
application and a system performance optimizer. The backup application uses a remote/hosted backup service, which
offers 1 Gbyte of storage to users for the first year at no charge.
Panda Internet Security 2008 is available either on CD or as a download from Panda's Web site. Test Center engineers
downloaded the latest version of the product, which is available either for purchase or as a 30-day free trial.
The product installs from a single file and is wizard-driven. Like the other products featured here, Panda offers a simple,
guided install that can speed along with default settings or lets the installer tweak options along the way. That said, Panda
gets the nod for easiest installation. While its peers sport fine installation routines, they also added some unnecessary
complexity to the process. For consistency, engineers went with a standard installation.
Panda's focus on security is exemplified by the installation process. As part of the installation, a spyware scan is initiated.
Panda was the only product to actively detect and repair a spyware-infected cookie during the installation process, which
occurred on what was thought to be a clean system image that was only connected to the Internet to download the Panda
product.
The installation program also asks for permission before allowing the application to actively contact Panda about local virus
or malware activity, which allows users to choose whether or not to be involved in the company's security reporting. A reboot
is required after installation and the product automatically updates to the latest version once rebooted.
Panda Internet Security offers three key features that give it an edge over its competitors: the above-mentioned integrated
backup capability, the standard inclusion of three licenses and a patented technology called TruPrevent.
Bottom Line
While any one of the products examined here will help to secure a desktop system, Panda Internet Security 2008 edges out
the others on several fronts. Its TruPrevent technology for stopping zero-day attacks is a standout feature, as are its
included remote backup capability and the inclusion of three licenses. On performance, Panda scanned the most amount of
objects in the least amount of time and showed only a negligible impact on the performance of the test system. Panda's
product also impressed engineers with its ease of installation, as it proved to be the most straightforward and threw up the
least amount of hurdles. In terms of its channel strategy, Panda has clearly put a renewed effort into partner recruitment
following its transition from a public company to a private entity. It also offers portal access, online participation in renewals
and extensive marketing collateral. All of those elements help Panda score extra points for channel support.
An honorable mention goes out to Kaspersky, whose Anti-virus for Windows Workstations product provides a path to a
centralized, network-managed product offering that can help system builders bring a unified security offering into
customers' networks by just bundling the product with new PCs. Kaspersky bested its peers on ease of use, enabling users
to drill down into complex features without getting lost. And while Kaspersky wasn't as speedy on object scanning as Panda,
it did have the least amount of performance impact on the system it was protecting, according to engineers' PassMark tests.
Grisoft offers a solid package, but it just wasn't as strong as either of its peers. For solution providers seeking extra features,
fast performance, simple installation and a strong channel effort, Panda offers the security suite of choice.

Panda 2008: Staying on Top of the Internet Security Scene
Rounding Out an Already Competent Internet Security Suite
Adam Stone
The stakes run ever higher in internet security, as the black hats get more creative and more pernicious by the day. With its latest
releases, Panda Software continues to impress.
Panda Internet Security 2008 builds on its reputation for security with several key new features
Panda Antivirus 2008, Panda Antivirus+Firewall 2008, and Panda Internet Security 2008 claim to tackle many modern ailments,
building on the software maker's existing reputation for effectiveness while bringing to the table a number of new features.
New this year in Antivirus+Firewall is an in-depth online scanning feature. Should anything slip past the front line of defenses, a
periodic deep scan should detect and delete the threat.
Also new is an automated backup system that aims to safeguard files against accidental loss or damage. As part of its internet
security package, Panda offers this remedy in case of loss due to accidental deletion, hard drive problems, or other causes. This
feature will back up selected files on hard disk, CD, DVD, or an external drive. Backup isn't really within Panda's core competency
(security) and it isn't hard to find elsewhere, but the capability does make for a nice extra once you've paid for the security package.
The same might be said for other new features, such as systems optimization. Panda Internet Security 2008 helps fix slow or
erratic performance with ready access to cleanup tools (removing cookies, temporary files, items in the recycle bin, etc.) and
defragmentation capabilities.
In other nice but non-essential enhancements, Panda is offering parental controls, as well as 12 months of free 1 GB storage
space to back up important documents.
Customizing Panda IS 2008 to your needs is a simple and straightforward process
Frankly, we don't see the point of any of this. Free storage, parental controls, optimization, data backup: What does any of this
have to do with viruses and firewalls? All of these tools are readily available elsewhere and many extremely potent versions can be
had for free.
Seeing Panda tack on such extras makes us wonder whether the software maker is perhaps hitting the bottom of the barrel in
terms of substantive enhancements. Likely we will have to wait for the next round of changes to see whether Panda still has more
meat to put on the table.
For the time being, however, it is true that Panda has also beefed up some of the more relevant aspects of its spyware and virus
stalking capabilities. In addition to a larger signature file and WiFi security, the 2008 products also boast increased efficiency in
behavioral detection, along with new rootkit location and disinfection technology.

Strengthening the Core
Panda's TotalScan MegaDetection technology adeptly scans files received by email, IM, or download for malware
The software maker's core capabilities remain very much intact.
Panda's claim to fame has long been its behavior-based TruPrevent technology, which uses behavioral analysis to defend against
threats too new to be identified by signature. This ability to stay one step ahead continues to single out Panda from among
competing protective tools. Over the years it has proven itself repeatedly as a formidable weapon in the malware wars and it
remains the most lethal element in the Panda arsenal.
An online application, TotalScan detects all types of active and latent attackers on PCs, based on a new approach known as
"collective intelligence." This approach makes possible the automated processing of large quantities of information about
programs and files. Specifically, processing is done on Panda's own servers, rather than on the user's computer, with the servers
and the PC maintaining real-time communication during the scan.
New on the scene is what Panda calls "MegaDetection." Incorporating TotalScan technology into the company's internet security
product, MegaDetection is designed to scan files received by email, IM, or download. Users can be selective, choosing to scan the
whole computer, mail files, or items on a disk.
MegaDetection takes a while, to the tune of half an hour on a PC, even with advanced heuristics switched off. Fortunately, timing is
flexible: A wizard enables scheduling for a vast range of intervals, allowing different scan types to take place at intervals from hours
to years.
As with a number of features, advanced heuristics is switched off by default. The same holds true for TruPrevent, which can be
omitted by the installer without warning if insufficient memory is available. Panda probably would serve itself and its customers
well by having these items up and running right from the start. Why leave key features to chance? We'd just as soon have the good
stuff turned on by default.
Installation of Panda's 2008 products is easy, and the interfaces are acceptable. The Internet Security suite for instance delivers
panes of major status areas; trouble points are highlighted with a warning and an offer to fix, and expanded panes offer additional
details.
Meanwhile, Panda appears bent on maintaining its reputation for lukewarm customer service. The Website is chock full of FAQs
and documentation, but there's no phone number for tech support. On the Contact page the link back to the Support page didn't
work when we tried it. Users have long taken issue with Panda's support and we see no sign that things are improving.
All that being said, Panda remains a big name on the anti-virus scene and its latest releases are likely to maintain that visibility —
not because of parental controls and disc optimization, but because of the bread-and-butter basics that have always made Panda
shine: Namely, TruPrevent. So long as Panda can spot viruses and other ills before they have even been defined, the company will
remain very much a player.
Pros: · Lifetime license (free Intelligent Updates service for automatic daily updates), · Great Internet protection from viruses, ·
Rich set of configuration options, · Attractive interface, · Basic and advanced modes of operation
Cons: · Detects and removes half as many viruses as VirusScan and Norton AntiVirus; · Plain and boring interface

PC Advisor (1 of 2)
September 2007
You know that summer has given way to autumn when the major antivirus companies start
unveiling the annual updates to their main security packages.
Panda is probably one of the best known names to the public and, with its brand new suite, it
now has an almost complete set of features. Panda Internet Security 2008 adds a number of
interesting programs to the mix, from Wi-Fi access detection to backup and optimisation
utilities.
At £43 for a 12-month three user version, Panda Internet Security 2008 is a touch more
expensive than BitDefender Total Security 2008. However, it's still considerably cheaper
than such packages as Norton 360.
Panda Internet Security 2008 is also available in a six-month version. At £27, this'll obviously
cost you in the long-run (paying this sum twice over 12 months would see you £11 out of
pocket when compared to the normal one-year edition), but those who want to try it out for a
lengthy period may appreciate having the option of a cheaper six-month edition.
Panda Internet Security 2008 doesn't perhaps have the most user-friendly user interface, lacking the colourful buttons
and indicators favoured by such names as Norton and McAfee. Indeed, it took us a while just to find the settings for
such standard features as the firewall. Once up to speed, the interface is concise where needed, although
inexperienced users may find themselves a little confused. Neither are all of the features in the program always
installed as default.
The Panda range does get certification from ICSA and West Coast Labs, but this company has always been a little
reticent about participating in a number of the better-known antivirus surveys. However, Panda Internet Security 2008
has a new and much improved virus engine that, we hope, will give Panda the confidence to pit its latest offering
against such high detection rate titans as BitDefender and Kaspersky.
The main change is 'MegaDetection', which means that the Panda Internet Security 2008 engine now includes the
much-praised technology employed by Panda's TotalScan online version. The effect of this is noticeable almost
immediately. Even in its pre-installation scan, the software picked out and vanquished over 57 threats on our test PC.
Once fully installed, it detected and removed everything we could throw at it.

It's not spectacularly fast taking 27 minutes to check 55GB of files on a desktop PC, and over 31 minutes to check
a laptop and the most advanced heuristics (which are the best way of sorting out new and unseen threats) tests are
switched off as default. These do add an extra five minutes or so to the scan time, but it would be nice to be given
the most comprehensive scanning method available as standard. Nonetheless, the scanning is very good indeed.
We like the Panda Internet Security 2008 firewall as well. This may be a very important part of your internet
armoury, but firewalls aren't known for their quiet and unobtrusive behaviour. Panda's version, though, is excellent at
working out which applications should and should not be allowed. As a consequence, you'll be afflicted by far fewer
of those mysterious 'Do you want to allow' messages?
It's perhaps a shame that some of the other features are less impressive than they seem on paper. The new
'Optimized PC Performance' tools aren't really a vast improvement on those packaged with Vista. And Panda
Internet Security 2008's parental features, while functional, lack advanced scheduling, remote configuration and
notification facilities they do their basic job, but no more than that.
You can also get better (and more secure) offsite backup by looking at some of the best of the free online
alternatives, although the local backup feature is quite decent. It's nice that the Wi-Fi protection points out when a
computer tries to connect to your computer, although this can be a little overactive. Provided you've got encryption
enabled, you won't really be any safer with this feature turned on.
One thing we do like is Panda Internet Security 2008's ability to run through your system and tell you about the
vulnerabilities in your PC and then show you exactly how to fix them. Our main desktop PC testbed didn't have any
obvious weaknesses, but our notebook was apparently open to a number of serious attacks from named viruses, so
it was nice to be able to fill in these gaping holes.
Verdict
Panda Internet Security 2008 is being sold as a complete solution. With that in mind, we think a number of the
components (parental control, backup, PC optimisation) are rather disappointing and, in most cases, are easily
improved upon with software and web services freely available over the internet.
However, the antivirus facilities and firewall are still the main selling points for any security package. And here,
Panda looks fantastic. Its detection rates are high, its firewall is wonderfully unobtrusive, and these aspects of the
software work like a dream. Perhaps BitDefender remains the slightly superior package overall (particularly given
the pricing), but this is now a genuinely competitive offering that provides genuine competition for the big names.

Panda Internet Security 2008
Vicious panda: The Panda software viciously tracks down
viruses and cookies.
Functionality: A+
Ease of use: A
Speed: AValue: B+
08/13/07
By John Breeden II
Pros: Gives users a lot of info, deletes anything remotely suspicious.
Cons: Does a few things without asking.
When Panda software wanted to submit a beta of its 2008 antivirus software, we were
a little skeptical; we put betas through the same rigorous testing as released software.
But Panda representatives insisted. Panda Internet Security 2008 more than lived up
to our expectations.
Installing the software was simple and easy, taking 4 minutes, 52 seconds, plus a reboot. It was the only
program to find all 10 of the cookies we put on the test system, and it did it before it was even installed. During
the install process, the program runs an anti-spyware scan. During this scan, it found all 10 cookies and
automatically deleted them. The bad part about this was that seven of the cookies were not malicious, and we
were given no choice as to their fate. The software just killed them without prompting and then finished the
install.
Once installed, the Panda software was no less vicious in tracking down and eliminating all the viruses we had
put on the system, in addition to others we tried to implant through various means. One nice feature is that the
software constantly scans all active connections into or out of a system for anything suspicious. One screen
shows you each and every port that is open on a system, what programs are using them and where the
programs are located. This makes it impossible for any program that tries to get to the outside world to do so
without detection. A separate screen monitors wireless access to a system, so you are protected from that
angle, too.
The first update was a little long, at 2 minutes, 34 seconds, but a full scan took only 31 minutes, 7 seconds.
And when we say a full scan, we mean it. The Panda software reported scanning 522,385 files, which is way
more than any others in the review. Granted, most of these files might be unable to contain a virus, but given
that a scan only takes 31 minutes, why not look at them? And it found every virus on the system, so it’s both
accurate and fast. And although this is mostly nonessential information, we like being told how many viruses
the software is shielding us from. In this case, there are 533,079 in its database, according to what it told us at
the end of an update.
In addition to antivirus, you also get anti-spam, anti-spyware, backup help and a program to optimize system
performance.
The one thing we did not quite like was the price, which is $69.95 with a year of system updates. That is a bit
expensive, but considering Panda Internet Security 2008 works better than any other program in this review,
has a good interface, is speedy and contains a lot of extras, that might not be so bad.
It earns our Reviewer’s Choice designation for this review.

PC Magazine (1 of 5)
August 2007
At first glance, Panda Internet Security 2008 hardly looks different from last year's model, but there are some exciting
additions. It now includes Wi-Fi security, and, like BitDefender Total Security 2008 and Norton 360, it offers backup and
performance tuning. One big change is invisible: the on-demand scanner now uses the same technology as Panda's
Internet-based TotalScan, and it truly rocks. Not every change is for the better in this iteration of the suite, however.
Panda 2008's main screen displays program status in four panes: security protection, unwanted content filters,
optimization and backup, and updates and subscription. You can expand each pane to see detailed status or click on a
link to change settings. If anything's wrong, the pane gets a red tint and an "Attention" message. There isn't a big button
to fix all problems, as you'll find in Norton Internet Security 2007 or BitDefender Total Security 2008. But the product's
regular self-diagnosis will always offer to fix the worst outstanding problem.
Viruses and Spyware, Beware!
Panda has touted the behavior-based protection of its TruPrevent technology for some years now. TruPrevent is
designed to protect against threats too new to be identified by signature, and it does seem to work. Watch out, though,
because if your system has less than 500MB of memory available, the installer will omit TruPrevent without warning. To
be sure you've got TruPrevent on your protection team, open the Security Protection panel and find the line "Protection
against unknown threats." It should say OK. If instead it says Install, click on that link to install it. Or just select a custom
installation at the start and make sure the box for TruPrevent is checked. Of course, the app really ought to warn you if
it's not going to install a key component like this in the first place.
The other half of Panda's dynamic protection duo is signature-based scanning, which now uses the technology from
Panda's TotalScan online scanner. Panda calls the new scanning technology "megadetection." It scans files on access
and also scans any files received by e-mail, IM, or download. You can launch a scan of the whole computer, files on
disk, mail items, or a custom selection. A wizard helps you schedule specific scan types at intervals ranging from hours
to years. In the on-demand and on-schedule scans, you'll want to check the settings box for Genetic Heuristic Scanit's
off by default, probably because it takes a bit longer. Still, a combined virus and spyware scan with the Genetic Heuristic
Scan activated on my standard clean test system took a bit over 30 minutes, about the same as what Norton Internet
Security 2007 took. That being the case, if I were Panda, I'd activate this feature by default. It seems more sensible for
a security app to give people maximum protection out of the box and then guide them through performance, rather than
vice versa.

Panda doesn't participate in Virus Bulletin's VB 100% testing, but West Coast Labs gives Panda's products checkmark
certification for virus detection and removal, as well as for detection of Trojan horses, spyware, and general malware.
ICSA has certified Panda's 2007 suite for virus detection and has certified other Panda products for cleaning (the suite
wasn't specifically tested). Though all the significant suites now run under Vista, Panda 2008 actually has the "Works
with Windows Vista" certification from Microsoft.
As always, I installed the product on virtual machines infested with 20-odd malware samples, including adware,
spyware, Trojans, rootkits, and rogue antispyware programs. Panda 2008 took charge right from the start: Its preinstall
scan disabled at least a portion of over three-quarters of the samples. Better yet, it wasn't bothered at all by one
grouchy malware sample that blocks installation of many security programs. One of my test systems is a bit unstable
because of the installed malware; this system frequently goes into a blue-screen death spiral after an incomplete
removal attempt. Panda managed to dodge that particular bullet.
That's not to say there weren't some bumps in the road. One malware sample that installs as a driver caused the scan
to hang every time. Scanning in Safe Mode was no better. I ran the online version of TotalScan, which detected the
sample but hung upon trying to remove it. On advice from Panda, I booted from the company's Rescue CD to scan from
a 100-percent clean operating system. The scan successfully identified the offending files, but, because the drive is
formatted for NTFS, it could not remove them. I like the idea of the Rescue CD, but the inability to clean up NTFS drives
seems like a rather big limitation! The Rescue CD did finger the problem files, though. Again on Panda's advice, I
booted into the Windows XP Recovery Console and deleted as many of those files as I could. After that, I was able to
run the scan normally.
With that problem out of the way, Panda's megadetection made a clean sweep: a perfect 10 out of 10! It successfully
removed the essential executable files for every single one of the malware samples. In many cases, it left behind data
files and Registry items sometimes dozens of them but without the malicious program, those items are harmless. In a
similar test against commercial keyloggers, it wasn't even remotely as effective, scoring 2.1 out of 10. But I give much
less weight to the keylogger test.
Sometimes a product that excels at removing malware isn't so good at keeping the creepy-crawlies out of a clean
system in the first place, or vice versa. Panda isn't one of those: It swept the field once more in the spyware blocking
test. When I tried installing the same set of samples on a clean system, Panda destroyed 80 percent of them the
moment I clicked on them, and it blocked the others sometime during the install process. Another perfect 10! That beats
the previous record of 9.8, scored by Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 5.0 in the same test. And it beats our current
Editor's Choice for antispyware, Spy Sweeper 5.5 with Spy Sweeper 5.5 with Antivirus, in both prevention and removal.
Here again, the protection against commercial keyloggers was much weaker, a mere 3.6 of 10. If someone's at your
desk installing a keylogger, however, you've got problems no software can solve.
When a product eliminates tons of malware on sight, it's usually identifying the threats by matching their signatures. For
a deeper test, I modified each of the malware installers that triggered Panda 2008's shoot-on-sight reaction, renaming
them, changing some non-executable bytes, and padding them with nulls to change the size. Panda still deleted about
60 percent of the modified installers on sight, but the rest at least started the install process. The suite missed one of
them completely and couldn't prevent another from installing. This is still quite a good performance against handmodified threats megadetection is a winner! My only gripe is that the scanner hung on that one malware sample; that
should not happen.
Unobtrusive Firewall
As expected, the firewall successfully stealthed all ports on my risky direct-to-Internet test computer. Even when I
accidentally put this test system in the secure zone, the firewall still stealthed almost every port. In several cases, it
reported my tests as port-scan attacks and disabled all network traffic with the test site for 10 minutesso far, so good.
You may never see this next feature in action, but the firewall also scans your system for vulnerabilities (configuration
problems that hackers might exploit) and automatically fixes them. If Panda can't fix them, it provides you with the steps
to accomplish a manual fix. Panda also checks to be sure that you're properly protected each time you connect to the
Internet and offers a warning if it detects a problem.

New in this version is a simple form of Wi-Fi network protection. When Panda 2008 detects a new computer trying to
connect to your computer via Wi-Fi, it pops up a warning and lets you choose whether to allow or deny access. The
network activity view includes a list of active members of the Wi-Fi network. At least, that's how it's supposed to work. I
found that it pops up an alert the first time any computer, wired or wireless, tries to connect with your computer over the
network, even if it's just to populate the "My Network Places" list. It even detected the wireless router itself as an
intruder. Naturally, I had to try blocking it, since the average user might do so. After the block I retained network access
but lost the ability to log into the wireless router to configure it. To get out of that bind I had to reset all the Wi-Fi
warnings and then correctly allow or deny them as they reappeared. The average user would be gnashing his teeth at
this point, I imagine. If your wireless network is encrypted, this feature doesn't add much. If it's not, you're living in a
fool's paradise!
Program control with Panda doesn't use traditional in-your-face confirmation pop-ups. Known good programs are
automatically given access; known bad programs are removed by the antivirus/antispyware module. If an unknown
program isn't doing anything malicious, it will be allowed access, too. Norton Internet Security 2007 works the same
way, and I definitely approve. Most users just aren't qualified to answer those innumerable Allow/Deny questions.
Of course, you can't use ordinary "leak test" programs to evaluate this kind of program control. Though the test
programs use techniques that are also used by malware, they're just demos with no malicious payload, so they don't get
blocked. I did find that when I tried to download a group of leak-test programs, it recognized about two-thirds of them
and blocked the download.
False positives are the specter that haunts some behavior-based systems. It's easy to block all bad programs if you
don't care whether you also block good programs! I tried installing and running a dozen or so PC Magazine utilities that
use the Internet or make low-level system changes, just to see what Panda 2008 would do. Last year CookieCop was
the only one that triggered a reaction, but I couldn't use it this year because it's not compatible with Internet Explorer 7.
The firewall correctly allowed all of the others to do their jobs. That's not an exhaustive false-positive test, but it serves
as a sanity check.
A firewall isn't much use if the bad guys can just flip the "off" switch, so I tried to disable Panda 2008's protection using a
number of techniques that a malicious program could use. When I tried to terminate its processes using Task Manager
or set the firewall inactive in the Registry, I just got "Access denied" over and over. I managed to stop all of its visible
Windows Services, but the firewall protection continued. The only way I could turn it off programmatically involved
sending fake mouse-clickslots of them. That's one tough firewall!
Antispam Accuracy Abates
Panda's spam filter examines the e-mail messages coming into your computer via the POP3 protocol and tags any that
it thinks are spam by adding [SPAM] to the subject. If you're using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, Panda
automatically adds a rule to put those messages in the SPAM folder; if not, you'll have to define a message rule
yourself. Outlook and Outlook Express users also get handy toolbar buttons to mark messages as spam or not spam.
You can manually add individual addresses or domains to a whitelist, so they'll never be blocked, and you can opt to
automatically add the sender of any message you mark as not spam. That's it. There's no option to import your address
book or to automatically add people to whom you send mailtwo unfortunate omissions.
The spam filter looks just the same as last year's, so I expected about the same results. I did give it a test run with a few
hundred messages, marking any spam or valid messages that it misfiled. Then I cleared out everything and let it
process over 2,000 messages from a real-world spam-infested account. Panda marked exactly one valid message from
an individual as spam and marked one valid e-mail from my bank as fraudulent. That's very good! Panda didn't have
any trouble recognizing several hundred newsletter-type messages as validsome filters lump a lot of these in with the
spam.
It hardly blocks any valid mail at all, then. That's important, but about stopping spam? Sadly, where last year's model let
20 percent of the undeniable spam into the Inbox, the current version allowed well over half. Apparently the spammers
have advanced their techniques, but the spam filter hasn't. Even Outlook's built-in junk e-mail filter can do better than
that. Perhaps it's fortunate that so many of us get our e-mail filtered at the Exchange server or through a Web-based email service. Certainly this spam filter isn't going to help much.

Plain Parental Control
The parental-control system is virtually unchanged since last year's model. As before, parental control isn't installed in
the product's default configuration, so those who don't need it won't be slowed down. Installing it when needed is
simple. You define parental-control accounts separately from Windows user accounts and assign a filter to each. The
Kids filter is the most restrictive, the Teen filter less so. Then there's an Employee filter that allows access only to sites
that do match specific work-appropriate categories. All told, there are 15 top-level categories and 55 subcategories. You
can fine-tune by specifying certain sites that will be blocked or allowed, regardless of category.
When parental control is active, you must log in to one of the accounts the first time you connect to the Internet in a
given session, and you must remember to log out of that account before letting the kids have a turn. Logging out of your
Windows user account also logs you out of the parental account. The filtering happens at the HTML transport level, so it
doesn't matter what browser you use. And the filter is tough: I couldn't break it without disabling all access to the
Internet.
Still, a full-fledged parental-control solution should do much more. At the very least, you'd want the ability to set a
schedule as to when your kids are allowed on the Internet, limit the amount of online time they spend per day/week, or
both. The best products, such as Safe Eyes 5.0, include options like notification of attempted violations and the ability to
configure the filter remotely. Though Panda 2008 offers an effective category-based filter, it's far from a full parental
solution.
Privacy and Phishing Protection
The suite's confidential data protection, like parental control, seems unchanged since last year. You make a list of
important private data, such as credit card numbers or passwords, identifying each with a descriptive name. Once
entered, the data is stored in encrypted form and never displayed againto change an item, you must delete and recreate it. If the data is about to leave your computer via a Web form or e-mail, Panda 2008 pops up a warning and asks
whether or not to allow it. There's no option to define exceptions for specific data so as to, for example, allow your eBay
password on the eBay site but nowhere else. And since any user can choose to allow data transmission, you can't use it
to keep your kids from revealing your home phone number or address. Panda's data protection, therefore, isn't really
very useful.
New to the fraud protection department is the blocking of fraudulent Web sitesphishing prevention. Most antiphishing
solutions install inside Internet Explorer; some also install inside Firefox. This one works at the HTML level, making it
browser-independent. That would be a great featureif the antiphishing filter only worked. I started testing the product
against a variety of current phishing URLs culled from actual e-mails and from phish-tracking sites. After going through
a dozen definitely fraudulent sites without any alerts, I contacted Panda and was told that a new signature file coming
the next day would improve performance. So I held off on further testing until that update arrived.
To keep the testing sane, I checked each URL in one browser protected by Panda 2008 (with the updated signature
file), one with Norton Internet Security 2007, one with IE7's built-in phishing protection, and one with Firefox 2's built-in
protection. These fraudulent sites disappear fast; I discard any that doesn't stick around long enough to give all four
systems a chance at analysis. I also discard any URL that none of the products flag as fraudulent. I went through almost
90 to get 50 definite phishing URLs, each flagged as such by at least one of the products. NIS 2007 and IE7 alone both
caught over 90 percent of the samples, and Firefox alone caught almost 80 percent. But Panda 2008 didn't catch a
single onenot one. I guess it's a good thing that modern browsers do so well at phishing protection, since as far as my
testing shows, Panda isn't doing a thing.

Basic Backup
This version of Panda 2008 offers a very simple automated backup utility. It comes pre-configured with a standard
backup profile that copies categories such as photos, office documents, Windows Address book files, and Internet
favoritesall you need do is enable the utility. You can edit the standard profile or define your own backup profiles, adding
music files, movies, Outlook or Outlook Express message files, or any file extensions you choose. Backup occurs once
per day at 8 p.m. or at whatever time you choose.
By default, your backed-up files are stored on the local hard drive in ZIP-compressed form with optional encryption. You
can select a different local hard drive or choose a network-based destination. Once you've made a backup, you can
burn it to CD/DVD, but there's no option to skip the local backup and go directly to shiny media. Only changed files get
backed up, to save space.
To restore files, you use a slightly awkward tree-based interface: I really wanted to resize it so I could see more of the
folder tree and files. Picture trying to navigate in Windows Explorer but using a window that's limited to maybe 250 by
300 pixels. For each backup set, only the folders that actually contain backup files are displayed. You can choose to
restore individual files or all files in and below a given folder. One nice touch: If you choose "Latest version" rather than
a specific date/time backup, you'll get a listing that includes every backed-up file from whichever backup set, but only
the most recent version. You get to put files in their original location or in a new location, but there's no option, for
example, to prevent overwriting newer files. It's a very basic backup solution, but it's better than no backup.
The suite promises free online backup, but it's not at all what I expected. I was excited to see a link for online backup,
but it was a bust. Where a Norton 360 subscription gives you 2GB of online storage that's fully integrated with the suite,
Panda's offer gets you a separate subscription with partner Docoom.com. Through this offer, you can store 1GB of
backed-up files for a year for free. After that pricing starts at €24 (about $33) per year for 10GB; there's no option just to
pay for your 1GB. You'd be better off using Mozy Remote Backup, which offers 2GB for free and doesn't demand
payment in a year.
I did sign up for the Docoom.com backup feature, just to see. I was a bit put off by its legal and privacy notices, which
had been badly translated from the Spanish, with phrases such as "incluye or distribuye any information which include
pornografics" and "The user will don't use the website . . . against law." In addition, the privacy policy seems to state that
by signing up you consent to receive e-mail ads from Docoom and any partners: "In this sense, advertisement and
commercial emailing to the user´s inbox is expressly consent when users complete registration." One more worry:
Unlike Mozy, Docoom.com offers no option to use your own encryption key. I strapped on my virtual flak jacket and
proceeded to try the system.
The online backup is very simple, similar in many ways to the built-in backup feature. By default, it backs up standard
locations such as My Documents, but you can add whatever folders you want. It stores from one to ten versions of
filesyou choose the number, but the versions do count against your total backup storage. Mozy stores all previous
versions up to 30 days old without counting them as part of your total. As with all hosted online backup solutions, the
initial upload took many hours; after that, backing up just the changed files was very quick. Neither the integrated local
backup nor the separate online backup can handle open files, so if you've always got Outlook open, your .PST file may
not get backed up. Given its limitations, I can't recommend the online backup option.
Buried in the backup settings is a panel called Optimization. There's a cleanup button on this panel that performs some
but not all of the tasks built into Vista and Win XP's Disk Cleanup and IE7's Delete Browsing History dialog. You can
schedule any of the cleanup tasks to run at intervals from 1 to 30 days. And there's a defragmenter that doesn't seem
any more effective than what's already built into Windows. Really, this particular new feature is just fluff.
Virus/spyware protection is Panda Internet Security 2008's super standout: It's the first product ever to remove every
single one of my spyware samples and also prevent every single one of them from installing on a clean system. I like
that the firewall takes responsibility for deciding which programs get Internet access, though this feature is hard to test.
Panda's antispam has gone downhill, though, and the new Wi-Fi protection, antiphishing, and optimization features are
disappointing. But Panda has released a serious spyware killer, and if it can keep this up and bring the rest of the suite
up to snuff, the next iteration might just be 2009's killer security suite.
One step ahead.

I recently went shopping for a new antivirus and spyware program. I came across Panda Antivirus +
Antispyware 2008 in my local Office Depot. The price of this product was very reasonable. I decided to
purchase and try out this product. Here is what I discovered!
Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 caught my attention with it's large list of antivirus and spyware solutions.
Panda calls this program megadetection. It contains antivirus, heuristic technology, antispyware, antiadware,
antiphishing, antirootkit, malicious web page filter, truprevent technologies, personal firewall, identity protect,
antispam, parental control, backup and restore, pc tuneup, automatic updates, tech support 24 hour/365
days, multiple licenses and in-depth online scanning. That is a lot for one program to offer! I was very
impressed by the number of protection items that this program offered.
Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 costs under thirty dollars at my local Office Depot store. That fantastic
price included a great ten dollar rebate! So, I only ended up paying around twenty dollars for all of this
wonderful pc protection. I found Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 very easy to install. The installation
process was very quick and simple to do. The directions were clear and easy for me to read and follow. The
tips that this program gave me were very helpful and made installing this program very stress free. I think that
it is the simplest pc protection program that I have ever tried. Installing this program only took a few minutes!
One of the first things that I noticed, after installing Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 was that this program
did not bog down my pc or make it run any slower. I really liked that fact! The next thing that I noticed and
appreciated about this pc protection program was that it took less time to perform a complete scan of my pc
than any other antivirus or spyware program that I have ever used. That fact was great! The scanning was
complete, fast and it fixes everything without me having to click one extra button. This program is smart and I
loved it's ease of use. The program made all fixes automatically. This product comes with an exchange
guarantee and a rebate. You can use this program on up to three different computers. Panda Antivirus +
Antispyware 2008 works with Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000.
Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 offers free updates and gives me an up to date status of my pc protection
at all times. You can install and forget it. It works hard so that you can have peace of mind. This program does
everything and it's performance impressed me. The easy to follow directions and simple CD installation are
fantastic, in my opinion. The panda logo is cute and is easily seen in the task bar, for simple use and great
performance. I loved this product. Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 provides free downloads and updates
to keep my pc protected and running smoothly.
I rate Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2008 four stars out of five stars. This program is easy to use, very user
friendly and performs fast scanning. The Panda Security web site is great and provides much valuable
information and support for this program. I was delighted by this product.

Panda Anti-Virus Software
Panda Anti-virus software was one of the products that we tried out. Detailed below is our Panda anti -virus software review.
User Interface and Product Application
The installation process for Panda Antivirus software was a smooth process with only a little confusion (there is a
spyware scan mid install process) and a relatively fast process. I like the ease and speed at which this occurred.
By looks alone this product may be the easiest to use with a simple set up process and easy to use interface as
there is almost nothing to it. BigStar Reviews feels that consumers are bound to feel comfortable with this
product. Panda anti-virus software is an easy to install product that came defaulted with preset functions, just
the way we needed them. BigStar Reviews loves that Panda updates “at least” once a day…you can request
more frequent updates. I suspect this is going to be a nice install and forget product as time goes on.
Panda's Antivirus software comes with an virus protection and anti-spyware software. Panda allows you to block,
delete, clean, and quarantine infected files and does not slow your pc down during virus scans which is helpful to
those constantly on your pc. With this being said, we noticed some obvious adware penetrates Panda ’s security
software. BigStar Reviews ’ Favorite Feature: Protects Against Online Fraud
