Here - IAYO 20th Festival of Youth Orchestras
Message from
Joanna Crooks
IAYO PRESIDENT
In 1994, representatives of a number of youth orchestras met
together in Maoin Cheoil an Chláir, Ennis, County Clare, for an
inaugural AGM to form the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras.
Start-up funding for the venture was generously provided by
another organisation, with a track record as pioneers in the field
of youth music – Dublin Youth Orchestras. That start-up support
was well placed and well rewarded. Read through the list in
tonight’s beautiful programme to discover the youth orchestras
from all over the country, including primary and secondary
schools, third level colleges and conservatories who are currently
members. A Festival of Youth Orchestras was discussed at that
very first meeting, and took place for the first time in 1996.
It was always accepted as inevitable that the young musicians
in peripheral areas of the country faced far greater obstacles
than those in larger towns and cities, where teachers and
opportunities are always easier to find. Sister Concepta Murphy,
of Ballyshannon, County Donegal, was always an enthusiast
and an inspiration to everyone and remained undaunted by
problems created by the vast county of Donegal. Her unique
ability to harness every available opportunity to benefit her
young Donegal musicians through friendship, cooperation and
partnership has made an enormous and invaluable contribution
to the vibrant musical life of Donegal today. Everyone who met
and worked with her learned from her. She created a musical
Wild Atlantic Way before anyone else had thought of it.
Two decades ago we were still in the world of postage stamps.
Today’s performers would really not believe their eyes. No
iAnythings, no Facebook, no tweeting and Twitter-ing, no
websites. One thing has simply not changed – the time, the
work, the determination needed to learn to play an instrument.
Whatever kind of music is involved, there are no instant results,
no magic zapper. The young musicians have to work hard and
steadily, year by year, harnessing talent with focus and great
commitment to perform before us tonight with their orchestras.
When we look down and listen to a large youth orchestra, we
are enjoying the results of hundreds of years of individual
and collective work by the musicians, before starting to count
the small armies of parents, tutors, conductors, teachers and
schools who have all made it possible. The Festival of Youth
Orchestras is a great achievement. We can better appreciate
the value and spread of the innovative work being done all over
the country and be inspired by it! Congratulations to all the
conductors and young musicians on stage today!
IAYO is now a well-established organisation in the world of music
and youth music in Ireland. The Festival is a flagship event in
its annual calendar. We wish the IAYO Board, staff and Festival
Staff every success as they step forward into the next decade!

FESTIVAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Carol Daly received her early music
education with the County Cork VEC Music
Scheme in her native Ballincollig, where she
was a multi scholarship and prize winner
as a young student and was leader of her
local community orchestra and of the
County Youth Orchestra. Carol continued her violin studies at
the Cork Municipal School of Music achieving Diplomas in Violin
Performance and String Teaching. An honours graduate of UCC,
she was appointed Head of Music at the newly opened Glanmire
Community College in 1997, which saw her actively develop a
popular, vibrant and positive music tradition in the college. From
2003 to 2009, Carol was Deputy Principal of the County Cork
School of Music. Carol was the founding conductor of the Cork
ETB Youth Orchestra and brought them to the National Stage at
the Festival of Youth Orchestras in 1998, 2003 and 2007. She is
in much demand as a violinist, participating in many chamber
and orchestral ensembles throughout the country, featuring on
CD recordings and broadcasts. Carol has toured Ireland with
Finbar Wright and with The Irish Sopranos as guest soloist and
as a member of the Cantilena String Quartet. In her current
role as Principal of Cork ETB School of Music, which touches
the lives of almost 3000 children in the Cork area, she is at
the cutting edge of many exciting initiatives and passionately
promotes music education – in particular group music making
and performance as arenas for nurturing positive mental health
in young people. Carol is delighted to continue her association
with IAYO and to celebrate the 20th birthday of the Festival of
Youth Orchestras.

Katharina Baker
Katharina was born and raised in Lübeck
in the North of Germany, where she was
surrounded by music at home, at church
and in school throughout her childhood
and youth. The violin became her main
instrument and opened the gates to orchestras and chamber
music, which alongside choir singing became a vital part of
Katharina’s teenage years. After her leaving cert, Katharina
spent five years working with voluntary organisations in Sweden
and Ireland. In 1996 she moved to Stockholm where she first
studied Musicology at Stockholm University followed by a five
year course in Violin (Ulla Magnusson), Violin Methodology and
Ensemble Conducting at the Royal University College of Music,
from which she graduated in 2002 (MA.MusEd). In June 2002
Katharina returned to Ireland with her young family and settled
down in County Galway. After working in different Music Schools
in Galway and Ennis, Katharina founded ‘Coole Music’ in 2005,
a community music school dedicated to joyful, creative and
supportive music-making. Katharina always enjoyed writing
music for her students and has a passion for chamber music.
In 2011 she published her first 4 volumes in the series of
Character Suites for young quartets and string orchestras which
since have grown to 6 volumes some of which were recorded by
the RTÉ ConTempo Quartet last spring. Katharina is delighted
to conduct the premiere of her latest orchestral piece at the
Festival, entitled Aus der Distanz.
Conductors
Ruth O'Leary
Ruth is a past pupil of St Canice’s CoEducational National School, where she
began her musical training and later attended
Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny. She
began attending the Royal Irish Academy
of Music, Dublin, for cello lessons at the age of 9, studying
with Olwen Lewis and Gerda Marwood, in WIT. In 2003, Ruth
moved to Holland where she studied cello performance in the
Koninklijke Conservatorium, Den Haag. On returning to Ireland,
she completed a Bachelor of Education Degree in St Patrick’s
College, Drumcondra, whilst continuing her musical studies in
the Royal Irish Academy of Music with William Butt, completing
an Associate Diploma in Cello Teaching. During her time in St
Patrick’s College Ruth developed an interest in conducting and
conducted the St Patrick’s College Choir in the Cork International
Choral Festival with great success in 2008. This led her to return
to St Patrick’s College to participate in a Postgraduate Diploma
in Choral Conducting in Schools and the Community. Ruth is
now a member of the teaching staff of St Canice’s National
School and plays a huge part in St Canice’s Instrumental Music
Programme. She teaches cello to children from senior infants to
6th class level in the school, as well as tutoring chamber music
and conducting the Senior Orchestra. In 2010, Ruth started
adult cello classes in the school for any parents who wished to
join their children in their musical studies. This has provided
cellists for the newly formed adult orchestra, the Kilkenny
Gateway Orchestra.
Gearóid Grant
Gearóid Grant is a Dubliner. He graduated
with a BMus degree from University College
Dublin, and since then he has combined a
freelance career as conductor with a career in
music education. Gearóid was the conductor
of the Junior National Youth Orchestra of Ireland since it was
formed in 1980 and throughout this period has been an active
member of the Board of the NYOI. He conducted the NYOI at
the RTÉ Proms and on national television live from University
Concert Hall, Limerick on December 31st 1999 to play in the
new millennium. Gearóid celebrated 25 years as conductor and
musical director of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society. He
has worked with all of the RTÉ orchestras, the Ulster Orchestra
and the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He devised the popular “They
don’t sing like they did in the old days” which has been a sellout success for the RTÉ Concert Orchestra with performances
in the Helix and at the National Concert Hall. Gearóid devised
and continues to present and conduct the acclaimed Irish
Times series ‘Music in the Classroom’ which introduces music
to 30,000 Irish children annually, with 24 performances at the
National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around
Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTÉ,
The Irish Times and the Department of Education. He also
conducts the Cross-Border Orchestra of Ireland and has toured
with them many times in the USA. Gearóid conducts all of
Shaun Davey’s major works, including premieres of his Relief of
Derry Symphony in 1989 and his Concerto for Uilleann Pipes and
Orchestra, performed for the first time at Greenwich Festival in
London. These works are recorded for Tara Records. He has an
extensive repertoire of Irish music. He has conducted the Irish
Film Orchestra, of which he is Associate Music Director, for many
years. Gearóid Grant is one of the outstanding personalities in
his generation in the Irish music world and makes an ongoing
and unique contribution to many areas of Ireland’s cultural life,
but nowhere more importantly than through his work training
and inspiring new generations of young musicians in the
National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.
Tom Crowley
Tom Crowley is a native of Cork. He graduated
with honours from the Cork School of Music
where he studied for a BMus with Adrian
Petcu. During his studies, Tom spent a year
on an Erasmus exchange in Bucharest where,
amongst other things, his interest in conducting was sparked.
In 2012, Tom returned to Ireland having spent three years
completing a Masters in orchestral conducting in Bucharest
where he finished first in his class. While in Romania, Tom
studied under Maesto Dumitru Goia, a disciple of the St
Petersburg school of conducting. It is in Romania that Tom had
his professional debut with the Botosani Philharmonic. He has
also conducted the National Chamber Orchestra of Moldova.
Before returning home, Tom placed 2nd in the Jeunesses
Musicales International Conducting Competition in 2012. Now
based in Cork, he happily splits his time between the violin and
conducting. Tom conducted the premiere of Inspirit by Sam
Perkin with the Concorda Chamber Orchestra in 2013. He has
formed a chamber orchestra in Cork; the Stormport Sinfonia,
with whom he has most recently recorded the soundtrack for
an Irish documentary A Doctor's Sword. He is the principal
conductor of the Cork Youth Chamber Orchestra, and works
frequently with the Quercus Ensemble in Northern Ireland.
Kitty Dalligan
Kitty Dalligan started playing music at an
early age, studying violin and viola with
renowned violinist Jaroslav Vanecek at
Dublin’s Municipal School of Music, later
known as the DIT Conservatory of Music
and Drama. She was a regular prizewinner at Feis Ceoil and
Feis Maitiú on both violin and viola. Kitty played with the RTÉ
National Symphony Orchestra and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra
before joining the teaching staff of the DIT Conservatory of
Music and Drama. She went on to teach violin and viola as well
as conducting the Preliminary, Primary and Junior Orchestras
for many years. In 2002 Kitty founded the Young Orchestral
Pops (YOPs) Orchestra. In 2011, working closely with Dublin
City Council, Kitty established the Whitefriar Strings Project,
an outreach strings programme that provides access to free
professional string tuition for local Whitefriar Street children at
St Enda’s primary school. Kitty is a member of the American
String Teachers Association (ASTA). In 2012 she was honoured
to accept an invitation by the president of ASTA to present a talk
about her work with the Whitefriar Strings Project at the ASTA
National Conference. Kitty’s awards include The Agnes O’Kane
Award from IAYO, the Superquinn Community Award, and the
Unsung Hero Award from Dublin City Council for her work and
dedication with youth orchestras and music students.

The Agnes O’Kane Award
The Agnes O’Kane Award is
presented at the Festival of
Youth Orchestras annually to
recognise a volunteer who
has contributed to the growth
of youth orchestras in Ireland.
The award recognises the vital
contribution that volunteers have had in the growth
of youth orchestras over the last thirty years. It is
named after the founding Honorary Administrator
and, later, Chairperson of IAYO, a committed
volunteer who contributed not only to IAYO, but to
many other causes in youth and education in Ireland.

an important development in helping

“ It is wonderful to see
a continuous strength
in Ireland’s youth music
which, of course, is
so fundamentally
important to Ireland’s
future cultural life.”
“ I thought I’d become
a lawyer, but music
is what I’ve given my
professional life over
to, and it started with
the violin.”
“ Whatever the amount
of practice you have
done in preparation,
you learn so much
more in front of an
audience.”
“ It is really such
a special day and
something that Ireland
should be very proud
of.”
