In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as lifelong goals. President’s Message Legacy. Tradition. Mercy. Service. These are far more than words. There is immeasurable value in them as gifts: gifts which are the hallmark of a Mother McAuley education; gifts grounded in the mission, values and charism of the Sisters of Mercy, who built an institution that’s been educating and nurturing the spirits of young women for nearly 170 years. As we stand on the brink of tomorrow, we remember how these gifts continue to provide for us today. We find ourselves launching into the future with more belief in our mission than ever before. Imbued with the confidence, vision, and the unwavering support of the Board of the Trustees, we are making huge strides and bold decisions that will strengthen the future of Mother McAuley. With strong administrative leadership in place, we are solidly positioned for a limitless future which will advance our mission and the education of the young women entrusted to us. Our vision includes improved and expanded facilities, advanced technology, a more rigorous curriculum, and most importantly, welcoming girls who will thrive academically and graduate prepared to be empowered and compassionate pioneers in a world that is thirsting for innovative leadership. None of this would be possible without the support of you. I am filled with gratitude when I reflect on the community of faculty, staff, alumnae and donors who contribute their gifts to create an environment where every student has the opportunity to develop to her full potential for academic excellence, leadership and spiritual growth. Mother McAuley’s financial strength at this point in our history is in part the result of sound fiscal management and the impact of our many donors whose generosity is making a significant difference. We value your investments and work with confidence as a steward worthy of your trust. Thank you for believing in the power of a Mother McAuley education and the legacy and mission of Catherine McAuley. I am grateful for the history we have inherited, the present we share and the future we anticipate. LIFE TRUSTEES Mr. Francis Houlihan Mr. Robert Kuenster Sister Betty Smith, RSM ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 | 3 Advancing Education through Innovative Learning A L O O K AT M CA U L E Y ’ S i PA D ® P R O G R A M With the advent of a new school year this August, McAuley students found the load in their backpacks a little lighter. The reprieve came by way of a new tool – one smaller in surface area, yet more dynamic and powerful in content: the iPad®. This August, freshmen and sophomore McAuley students were required to have an iPad in class daily. Juniors and seniors were encouraged to bring an iPad, but not required. After thoughtful evaluation of an iPad pilot program launched in 2013-2014, and funded in part by grants from the Fred J. Brunner and Napelton Family Foundations, respectively, McAuley introduced the 1:1 program to increase collaboration, enhance learning, and prepare students for employing modern technology in their educational and professional careers. “The iPad brings an enormous benefit to student learning and achievement,” says Eileen Boyce ‘03, principal. “By taking small steps to incorporate technology into our curriculum through our 2013-2014 pilot program involving pre-selected classes across seven disciplines, we saw how our teachers mined valuable time for more direct and individual instruction, and identified greater opportunities for collaboration among students.” As the first single-gender high school in the Chicago Southland to unveil a 1:1 iPad program, Mother McAuley is at the forefront of integrating mobile devices into the classroom. The school selected iPads because of Apple’s philosophy of viewing the devices as educational tools. “Through Apple, we can access a robust selection of vetted education apps,” Boyce explained. “Whether graphing complex equations on interactive calculators, viewing a 3-D app to learn about the human skeletal system, or getting more immediate feedback from peers and instructors, our students benefit from the enhanced learning and collaboration opportunities the iPad provides,” says Boyce. 4 | ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 Student and parent response to the iPad integration has been positive. “Faith’s iPad has apps to create traditional documents like research papers, spreadsheets and slide presentations, but it also gives her an opportunity to explore non-traditional formats like audio and video recordings, drawing, and book writing,” says Monica Carey, mother of Faith, class of 2018. “I really like using the iPad during the school day. It’s a lot lighter than carrying around a bunch of books and it’s great to have the Internet right at my fingertips when I need to research something,” adds Faith. “The best part of the iPad are the apps that my teachers are using; they make learning more interesting and interactive.” member and Instructional Technology Specialist, Ms. Colleen Kilduff, staffs the CIT, along with teachers and students with advanced skills in technology. Additionally, student tutors volunteer in the CIT to earn service hours. “We are living in the age of ‘digital natives’ and the use of technology has emerged as a keystone issue with regard to lifelong learning,” says Ms. Kilduff. “As teachers, it is our job to provide the students the tools they need to succeed in this new digital era.” In preparation for the 2014 academic year, the school made a significant investment in upgrading its technology infrastructure, and the support for its faculty. McAuley has unveiled the Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT), a state-of-the-art resource space supported by a grant from the Birch Foundation. The CIT offers one-on-one instruction to help faculty develop and sharpen their technology skills and enhance their instructional abilities and curricular goals. “With the introduction of any new tool or resource the uneven familiarity and expertise among faculty becomes apparent,” says Ms. Boyce. “The key to success was faculty buy-in, confidence and support for using the iPads.” Located within the McAuley Multimedia Center, the CIT contains a sampling of all the technology tools used throughout the school; from iPads, to computers, to SMARTBoards, and more. Faculty Student and parent response to the iPad integration has been positive. “I’m so impressed with how Faith’s teachers are using the iPad in the classroom,” says Monica Carey. “Through the iPad, they give Faith a variety of digital tools to show what she’s learning. The result of her work on the iPad is she is highlyengaged in her schoolwork. She learns a tremendous amount about her subjects and technology at the same time, and I believe both will prepare her well for the future.” Families are responsible for purchasing an iPad for their student(s). The average cost of the iPad is $675, whereas the annual cost of traditional textbooks is between $500 and $700. McAuley expects families to see a significant savings versus the cost of textbooks as publishers expand their eBook offerings. Conservatively, families can expect to see upwards of $1,200 in savings through a student’s high school career. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 | 5 Faculty Updates Mother McAuley’s top-notch faculty and staff are dedicated professionals and lifelong learners committed to the faith formation and academic success of our students. They offer primary witness of the Mercy charism and values, and regularly seek out professional development opportunities to enrich learning within their field of interest so to bring stimulating and relevant content to the classroom. Social Science teacher, Ms. Rebecca Houston, spent her summer working with Mercy Beyond Borders, an organization that advances girls’ education in South Sudan and in Haiti. Sister Marilyn Lacey, RSM, sent Ms. Houston and two other women, one of whom was Katherine O’Keeffe ‘06, an alumna and daughter of Social Studies teacher, Robin O’Keeffe. The third woman is a teacher at a Mercy school in Macon, Georgia. The intent of their mission was to help fill the gap of a teacher shortage at an all-girls primary school in Narus, South Sudan. Ms. Houston and her team lived on a diocesan compound and trekked to school every day where they taught primary grades in science, English and math. “We were fortunate to work with a terrific and dedicated group of teachers and Sisters, and our students were motivated,” says Ms. Houston. “What a privilege to do this work on behalf of Mercy education!” Mr. Bob Rabe, Theology & Faith Formation Department Chair, was the opening and closing keynote speaker at the Indiana Conference for Catechetical Leadership on November 3 – 4 in Indianapolis. The conference theme was “Living a Life of Discipleship,” and Mr. Rabe’s presentation, “Transformative Discipleship: Following Christ into Unknown Horizons,” addressed the need for transformative and relevant discipleship, especially in drawing the young, the fallen away, and those who are searching, to the timeless truths and richness of the Catholic Christian Faith. All can realize an eternal destiny where fulfillment replaces emptiness, unity burns away fragmentation and forgiveness heals pain. Visual Arts and Technology Chair, Mrs. Kathy Gordon Davis, was named the recipient of the Sister Dorothy Marie Peschon ‘19 Award from the National Alumni Association of Saint Xavier University. This award is presented to a Saint Xavier alumnus who serves as an “exemplary volunteer and supporter of the University’s endeavors.” Recipients of this award “embody the values of the Sisters of Mercy in pursuit of opening new doors to Saint Xavier students.” In her almost 30 years of teaching at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, Kathy has taught a variety of visual arts courses. She currently serves as the Visual Arts and Technology Department Chairperson and moderator of the Mother McAuley Chapter of the National Art Honor Society. As a professional artist, she designed the cornerstone for the new music addition and the Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School/Saint Xavier Academy 160th Anniversary logo. She was recently commissioned by the Saint Xavier Class of 1961 to create a painting for the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library at Saint Xavier University. Her painting, “Valiant Woman” illustrates the many roles a woman plays in our history and society. Student Accomplishments Together, we have made a difference in the lives of our students. We’ve ensured that they are cared for each and every day. We have touched hearts, educated young minds, nurtured and prepared these young women to assume the role of compassionate Christians. The result of our endeavor is evident in these many accomplishments. 100% OF GRADUATES FROM THE CLASS OF 2014, WERE ACCEPTED TO COLLEGE A statistic far above the national average ENGLISH FINE ARTS LANGUAGE SOCIAL SCIENC E STUDENT TO FACULTY RATIO M AT H SCIENCE $ STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS FROM OUR ATHLETIC TEAMS AND 36 ADDITIONAL STATE TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES 400 LEGACY STUDENTS 85%+ 14:1 39 16 18 HONORS COURSES AP COURSES OF OUR STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS OR CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 25,000+ HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE ARE COMPLETED BY OUR STUDENTS EVERY YEAR 26,000 ALUMNAE STRONG 1ST SINGLE-GENDER SCHOOL IN CHICAGO SOUTHLAND TO IMPLEMENT A 1:1 iPAD PROGRAM 100,000+ 29,000,000+ 1,000,000+ IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY AWARDED TO MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 2018 IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY OFFERED TO THE CLASS OF 2014 FOR COLLEGE IN SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AWARDED ANNUALLY TO OUR CURRENT STUDENTS ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 | 7 From the Advancement Office Dear Alumnae and Friends of McAuley, One simple intention can change the world. There is no better testament to this than Catherine McAuley herself. Living a simple life, Catherine chose to invest her wealthy inheritance to establish a home to shelter and educate young women. This investment had profound consequences that today serve the world over. Mercy schools and hospitals abound, and Catherine’s gift and selfless act continue her mission, greatly impacting many, including our 26,000 alumnae. As we review the past year, I am even more honored to witness the generosity of our dedicated supporters who, like Catherine, give to continue her inspiring legacy. Our McAuley community is a dedicated and enthused corps who breathe life into our mission and who shape the future of our emboldened young women. Together, we are a compelling force. I challenge you to join in our mission; to model Catherine’s selflessness. You play a vital role in sustaining the unique and formative experiences that inspire our young women for a lifetime. Since our beginning, we have been blessed with faithful partners who support our mission. The generous gifts we receive assist in providing much needed student scholarships, financial aid and help supplement operating expenses. Supporting Mother McAuley is a sound investment in the future… a lifetime investment. The dividends you derive are seen in the success of our students and alumnae. I hope you will continue to believe in the possibilities of a Catholic, all-girls education and find inspiration in the stories of our exceptional students and successful alumnae which strengthen our belief that the lessons taught here transcend generations and fulfill our mission of educating today’s young women and tomorrow’s leaders. In Mercy and Giving, Carey Temple Harrington ’86 Vice President of Institutional Advancement “Since there is very little good can be accomplished or evil avoided without the aid of money, we must look after it in small as well as in great matters.” – Catherine McAuley in a letter to Father James Maher, January, 1838 8 | ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 Donor Voices Each of us has a “story” to tell. For many people, Mother McAuley figures prominently into their story, whether it is their memories from their time as a student, or watching first-hand as their daughter flourished within our halls. It is because of these stories that we, as a school, each year are blessed by the generosity of benefactors who want to insure that a McAuley education is available to deserving young women from across the Chicagoland area. Here, a few of our donors share what they feel makes McAuley a special place, and what sparks their desire to give. “What makes Mother McAuley a special place isn’t the bricks and mortar that make up the buildings, it’s what’s inside. The students, faculty and administrators are the key ingredients that make Mother McAuley not only special, but unique. It’s the school’s strong sense of community and compassion toward the needs of others that propel these young women into the leaders of tomorrow.” – Mike, Anne and Kaitlyn Cullen ’07, founders of the Bridget Anne Cullen Memorial Scholarship “My parents taught us from an early age the importance of giving back. They led by example. There is always someone who was there before you to make the road a little less rough. I believe it our obligation to remember this and try to do the same for the next generation. I contribute to McAuley to continue this tradition and so future generations of young women can receive the many benefits of a McAuley education that I received.” – Anne Bigane Wilson ’76, member, Board of Trustees “I feel like I owe McAuley so much for giving me the confidence and the tools necessary to succeed in college and beyond. This is a great chance to share the gift I’ve been given with current students, so that they also can be empowered to achieve their dreams and reach their fullest potential in life. My hope is that students will learn to give back in various ways.” - Jennifer Costello Fortner ’94, co-founder of the Jan Malloy Memorial Scholarship A financial gift is your opportunity to provide to the fabric of giving at Mother McAuley. Donations support everything we do, each and every day. From securing student scholarships, to strengthening and enriching the academic curriculum, expanding our athletic and co-curricular programs and maintaining and upgrading our school’s facilities on an annual basis. It is our mission to prepare our students for the contemporary world guided by the light of faith. Please consider how you may help our students advance along the path toward educational excellence. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 | 9 Sister Agatha O’Brien Memorial Scholarship S I S T E R AG AT H A O ’ B R I E N MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2013, the Sister Agatha O’Brien Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship awarded to the top five percent of students who take the High School Placement Test. The school commits to rewarding each of these young ladies for their impressive achievements and helping develop their potential in a single-gender environment that provides a lifetime advantage; namely a quality, Catholic, liberal arts, college preparatory education. The scholarship fund is supported in part by a $25,000 grant from the Helen Brach Foundation, in addition to proceeds from the 2014 Celebration Gala. In naming the scholarship for Sister Agatha O’Brien, the school highlights the ministry of a Mercy woman who, in the face of extreme hardship, demonstrated leadership, courage, perseverance and service to those in need of education in Chicago from 1846 until her untimely death in 1854. Sister Agatha O’Brien, at age 24, led the first contingent of the Sisters of Mercy to Chicago. As the eldest of the women, she was said to possess “maturity, charm, and the ability to make decisions,” qualities used to the fullest as she responded to the needs of the poor, the sick, and the uneducated. Within weeks of their arrival in Chicago the Sisters of Mercy opened three schools – two grammar schools and a post-grammar school for young ladies – St. Francis Xavier Academy for Females, the predecessor to Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. Six generations of women have been served since Agatha O’Brien and her small group of sisters opened the doors to the original school. Every graduate is a beneficiary of their courage as pioneering visionaries and a testament to their belief in the ministry of educating young women. Fast facts about the Class of 2018 Agatha O’Brien Scholars: 22 recipients Represent 14 schools: 10 Catholic and 4 public 23% are minority students 41% receive additional financial aid from McAuley, with an average additional award of $1,300. 10 | ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 The Class of 2018 Sister Agatha O’Brien Memorial Scholarship recipients Front row (l-r): Grace Trippiedi, Joelle Gillespie, Payton Charlemagne-Nickols, Faith Carey, Hayley Gutrich, Melina Garcia, Emily Baniewicz, Maura Gribble, Rachel Greene, Catherine Rogers Back row: (l-r) Ellie Hayes, Abby Amado, Amanda Capuano, Vanessa Lunar, Stacey Manahan, Allison Keller, Grace Harkins, Kaleigh O’Hara, Kate Pytel, Casey Macander Not pictured: Kaleigh Mulcahy, Callie Pieczara CASEY MACANDER ‘18 Recipient, Sister Agatha O’Brien Scholarship & the Catherine McAuley Service Award “By earning these scholarships, I feel as though I was giving back to my family for working so hard to give me the education that will help me succeed later in life. Being in an atmosphere where everyone wants you to succeed and makes you feel welcome is something you wouldn’t find at any ordinary high school.” CAT H E R I N E R O G E R S ‘ 1 8 Recipient, Sister Agatha O’Brien Scholarship and Tradition of Excellence Scholarship “McAuley is not only a place to learn, but also a place to grow and develop into capable young women ready to accomplish our lifelong goals.” “I come from a family of five children with four of us still in school. Between both of my younger brothers attending Catholic grade school, me attending McAuley, and helping my older sister pay for graduate school, my parents are spending an enormous amount of money on tuition every year. The scholarships have helped balance out some of these costs, which is extremely helpful.” MICHAELA FOREMAN ‘17 Jean Mormon Unsworth Scholarship Recipient, and LINK Scholar “Due to the generosity of others, the scholarships push me to do my best to carry on the McAuley tradition. The McAuley education that donors help provide me will not only help me achieve academic success, but also allow to grow as a person and determine what God has called me to do.” ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 | 11 Grant Updates In addition to the generous support from donors, McAuley continues to be the beneficiary of many grant opportunities to benefit our students, faculty and programs. T H E H E L E N B R A C H F O U N DAT I O N Mother McAuley received $25,000 from The Brach Foundation, which was awarded to members of the class of 2018 who are recipients of the Sister Agatha O’Brien Memorial Scholarship Award. Twelve of the 22 incoming freshmen who scored in the top five percent on the High School Placement Test benefitted from this financial grant. The Helen Brach Foundation has awarded grant funds to Mother McAuley for more than seven years, generally in the amount of $25,000. THE SI STERS OF MERCY WEST MIDWEST C OMMUNITY The Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community awarded Mother McAuley at $40,000 grant in support of its Student Support Project. The grant funded the following three initiatives: The Student Counseling Initiative provides students with professional, outside, counseling services with short & long-term, individual, family and group therapy. It is designed to aid students in developing healthy coping mechanisms, recognizing and forming quality relationships and become well-rounded individuals. Our six-week summer school program helped incoming freshmen gain the skills needed for transitioning successfully into the academic rigors of a college-prep curriculum and set them on a course for success. The Learning Resource Center, which helps students identify cognitive and/or processing difficulties in order to aid them in acquiring the skills needed for advocating for themselves in college and beyond. The Mother McAuley Student Support Project has been awarded grant funds by the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Ministry Fund since the reorganization of the Sisters of Mercy four years ago. 12 | ANNUAL REPORT 2013 – 2014 F R E D J . O P E R AT I O N T E E N S A F E D R I V I N G GRANT AWARD For the seventh consecutive year, the students at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School were awarded the Operation Teen Safe Driving grant in the amount of $2,000. The project, led by McAuley’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) engages young drivers in the important work of developing safe driving habits. Ms. Maria Ramirez, faculty member and moderator of SADD, believes that this student-led project is instrumental in generating smart goals and activities that engage beginning drivers. As students become more aware of their own driving skills they gain a sharper awareness of the role and responsibilities of parents in monitoring the driving habits of their children. The Operation Teen Safe Driving Program is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Ford Motor Company and the Allstate Foundation.
