We are in the process of updating our facilities to include the renovation of Benedictine Hall as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Center. The plans include state-ofthe art classrooms for our girls to have hands-on experiences in these curricula. There will be spaces for collaborative work in teams, experiments, large construction projects and small group discussion. Through these opportunities, our girls will gain deep understanding of STEM concepts, enhancing their confidence to pursue these fields when they matriculate to higher education. The project is in the bidding stage, which should be concluded by mid-October. Construction is scheduled to commence in early November, with a completion date of May 2016. This 1.2 million dollar renovation begins a series of construction projects planned for the Academy. We are grateful to Hornbeck Offshore Services and SSA parents Todd and Troy Hornbeck for the financial support of this project and the STEM curriculum. We are so grateful to those benefactors who supported the original construction of Benedictine Hall. This project could not become a reality without you providing the foundation for this renovation. We ask for your continued support as we move forward and invite you to visit the campus anytime, but particularly when we have our dedication in August! Klein ‘04 is a Christian singer/songwriter, worship leader and inspirational speaker who has released five albums and has won six United Catholic Music & Video Association (UCMVA) Unity Awards, including the award for “Best Female Vocalist of the Year” in 2008. She has performed throughout the world and worked with bestselling author Immaculee Ilibagiza, among others. Through her gift of song and storytelling Kara calls people of all ages to embrace, fall in love with, and rediscover the joy of Christ, and to believe that life is a glorious gift from God that is truly worth living. Please use the attached link to view the live feed: http://occatholic.com/papal/ On Thursday and Friday, Lynne Fritscher Link ‘07 has the wonderful opportunity to attend the World Meeting of Families Conference in Philadelphia to hear renowned Catholic speakers, such as Bishop Barron and Dr. Scott Hahn, address the importance and sanctity of families in our world today. Mrs. Link says, "I am ecstatic to learn from such insightful, well-formed witnesses of the faith. The papal events will be held on Saturday and Sunday, which include a Festival of Families celebration, multiple public papal addresses, and a public Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. This time in Philadelphia is truly a once in a lifetime experience. I am so thankful to represent St. Scholastica Academy, and I cannot wait to bring back what I’ll learn and experience in the upcoming days to our school community. Please keep all of those in Philadelphia in your prayers!" FAMILY RETREAT All couples and their children (ages 7 to 17) are invited to attend the 4th Annual “A Family That Prays…” Retreat the weekend of September 26 and 27. If you or a family you know would like to be enriched in faith and be strengthened as a family, please register now! http://www.willwoods.org/event/family-retreat/ A suggested donation is requested to attend, but not required. ALUMNA ACCOMPLISHMENTS SSA alumna, Allyson Lacoste ‘15, was recently selected as one of fifty incoming freshmen (out of 1,500 applicants) to serve on The University of Alabama's Student Government Association's "SGA" First Year Council. This group represents first year students at the University. Congratulations to the 2015 St Paul's Homecoming Court: Queen: Kerilynn Walsh Senior Maids: Alyssa Asaro Camille Royerre Junior Maid: Elizabeth Simoneaux SSA STUDENT STANDOUTS Congratulations to SSA senior Beverly Brown for being selected as a National Merit Semifinalist. More than 1.5 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. Congratulations to Grace Galeziewski, Jacqueline Lavin, Margaret Mena, Anna Rawls and Katherine Stolin for being named 2016 National Merit Commended Students. Congratulations to SSA seniors Jacqueline Lavin and Margaret Mena for being selected as National Hispanic Recognition Scholars. Every year, the College Board recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino U.S. juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT test. Forty-one students at St. Scholastica Academy earned AP Scholar awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.9 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP. SCHOLASTIC A AC ADEMY ANNUAL GIVING PROGRAM Our 2015-16 Keep the Promise annual giving campaign kicked off on September 15. SSA hopes that each of its alums will support annual giving this year, to help continue the special traditions we enjoyed. Annual giving provides funds to the general operating budget and helps bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student. Many of us have daughters at SSA now. Our goal is 100% participation from alumnae. Wouldn’t it be amazing if every SSA alumna gave a gift – of any amount? We hope you will please consider this when you hear from SSA in the coming weeks! Sustaining the Legacy through Planned Giving Many of our friends are happy to share that they are providing a legacy to SSA’s future as part of their estate plans. In their desire to help make a meaningful difference in the world their children and grandchildren will inherit, they have decided to support the mission and work of SSA to ensure this educational tradition will continue for generations to come. Would you like to join these special men and women by leaving a lasting legacy to SSA? If so, you can become a member of the Scholastica Legacy Society.
