PAGE 4 Report on a Mini-Class Getting in the Zone: Visualizing Success in Agility As an experiment to see how a mini-seminar/class would be received, Christie Williams, a GLKC agility instructor and MACH-level handler, offered a 4-hour class on November 23rd and again on the 24th. The class focused on overcoming three problems that often plague agility competitors: remembering the agility course, finding the best handling strategy for their team, and minimizing stress at a trial. The class included a PowerPoint presentation, demonstrations, discussions, and visualization as well as an opportunity to try out the presented methods while running two courses. Thirteen students attended the class on Saturday and 9 on Sunday, over half of whom came from other clubs as far away as Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Muncie. Most teams were just getting ready to compete, but some were competing at advanced levels. The students were very enthusiastic and requested that the same seminar, or others on specific agility skills be offered at a later date. At $25 per person, the class brought in $550 for the club, suggesting that the agility community appreciates low-cost instruction focusing on just a few topics. Christie has several other ideas for tackling agility skills that could be adapted to this 4-hour format. It seemed like an easy way to serve the agility community and bring in a little extra money for our club. Thanks Christie! Not only did people volunteer to work at the event, but some brought tasty desserts and others worked behind the scenes before and after the trials. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I ’ d especially like to thank club members who took on extra responsibility to make things run smoothly: Dave Lawson and Forrest Held – chief course builders, Deb Held – chief ring steward, Jay Oxley – secretary ’ s assistant, Edie Lawson and Judy Oxley – hospitality organizers, Deb Biesemeier and Melony Boyll – Ribbons and Raffle, Melony Boyll – treasurer. Also, the people who stayed until the very end to clean the building are especially appreciated. The trials ran smoothly thanks to our very efficient trial secretary Brenda Peters from Evansville, IN. We had fun and well nested courses designed by a very nice judge, Karl Blakely from Minnesota. Our net income from the 3 days of trial was around $5550. And we received many compliments on our club being a very welcoming and friendly place. Thanks everyone!
