Dear Custom Shootout Participants:
I would like to thank all the Custom Boat Owners, Captains, Crews, Sponsors and the
Builders for your support and trust. For the past 13 years we have been truly blessed with
this unique “gentleman’s rules” charity tournament.
The Custom Shootout was originally formed to raise money for the victims of the September
11th tragedies. Since then, we have donated money to: The New York Firefighters,
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, American Cancer Society, Susan B. Komen Foundation,
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Anna Fund Melanoma Program, Miami Children’s
Hospital Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Red Cross/Hurricane Katrina
(marine related funds), Heroes Fund, IGFA, The Billfish Foundation, and a few others.
I would also like to thank Tina Church and all the volunteers who have been part of
this event over the years. I keep getting the credit, but without them this event would
not happen.
One of the best things that happened to this event was moving it to Abaco Beach Resort and
teaming up with Kevie and her staff. With an event such as this, the food has to be great to
get everyone off their luxury custom boats to join together for dinner and some drinks with
some old and new friends. Second is the large, enclosed, air-conditioned tent to make it even
more enjoyable. Also, the Resort is much closer to the fishing grounds. So many things have
to go right for this to continue to be the event it is today.
There are only two things about this event we cannot control; the weather and the fishing.
Last year it was a bit rough, and fishing was a bit slow, and even then we did not have any real
complaints. This shows me that everyone attending is here for all the right reasons! It also tells
me that the Abaco Beach Resort is doing a great job with the food, service, and drinks!

RULES
Tournament Format: The Custom Shootout is an
“Honor-System” format governed by the rules set forth
by the Tournament Committee. The format is intended to
generate team strategy, sportsmanship, and fun for all.
1. ANGLERS: Up to 4 anglers permitted
per boat. All anglers must be registered
prior to the start of the Tournament.

8. DEAD & LIVE BAIT are permitted and you
must use CIRCLE Hooks with all natural bait.
9. MAXIMUM OF 6 LINES (with hooks) are
permitted per boat at any one time.

system tournament. Each boat is responsible for his/
her performance. Any person witnessing rule violations
should enter a protest in writing to the Tournament
Committee no later than 6 P.M. the day of the alleged
violation. Tournament Committee decision shall be final.

There’s never been anything built quite like the Lizzy Bee. Even at her home dock at the
Sailfish Club of Florida in Palm Beach where people have pretty much seen it all when it comes to
custom fishing boats, she elicits ooh’s and ahs.
Not a day goes by that Capt. Mike McClamrock doesn’t get what he calls the question.
“Who makes this boat?”
His answer is course, Rybovich, Michael Rybovich and Sons, which he explains with a smile.
Lizzy Bee’s mirror white finish shimmers in the noonday sun as McClamrock works his
chamois across the boat’s curves, politely answering the passerby’s questions.
“How old is this boat? It’s looks vintage,” says the man with a knowing look.
It’s less than a year old, says McClamrock, launching into the story of how this new classic 64foot walkaround came to be.
1910-11: Austro-Hungarian immigrant and carpenter John Rybovich Sr. arrives in Palm Beach
looking for work. With local ordinances prohibiting hammering during the winter, he turns to
commercial fishing to earn a living. On a visit to New York in 1911, he meets Czechoslovakian
immigrant, Anna Pollack, his future wife.
1913-1930: John and Anna’s children: John, Ethel, Thomas, Emil and Mary Irene are born.
Family moves from their downtown apartment to a waterfront home at 4200 North Dixie where
Rybovich and Sons is born around 1919. John Sr. uses his carpentry skills to build and repair
other fisherman’s skiffs as well as his own. By 1930 the homestead is a thriving boatyard for
commercial and recreational boat owners from Palm Beach.
1931-1940: In 1931 a 26-foot yacht tender owned by the Phipp’s family is taken in trade for
a yard bill. John Rybovich Jr., then 18 and working full time at the yard, restores it, installing
the first set of directional outriggers with a welded metal base that could be set at a 22 ½ degree
angle, and with a half turn, at 45 degrees for fishing. From this boat he catches his first sailfish.
Rybovich becomes one the first yards installing topside controls over the lower station, adding
a throttle and reverse gear through the cabin top for maneuvering on fish. Among those seeking
sportfishing retrofits is Ernest Hemingway, who in 1935 hires Rybovich to turn his 38-foot
Wheeler Pilar into a sportsfisher. John Rybovich is introduced to giant bluefin tuna fishing at Cat
Cay and Bimini in 1937 and begins formulating ideas for the ideal big game boat.

What McClamrock does not explain is that Lizzy Bee is the
happy ending in a journey that began in 1975 when Michael
joined the payroll at Rybovich and Sons two weeks before his
father and uncle sold the yard.
Located at 4200 Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach,
Rybovich and Sons is where Michael’s uncles Tommy and John
and his father Emil created the modern big game fishing boat
in the early 50s after returning home from World War II. Miss
Chevy IV’s sleek profile and broken sheer, aluminum tuna
tower and outriggers, under transom tuna door and ball bearing
fighting chair set the standard for every sportfishing boat built
since. Built as hull

billfish and giant tuna.
Over the next 20 years
Tommy Rybovich built
67 more boats before
dying from cancer in
1941-1946: After being drafted into the US Army Air Corps flying B-17s, Tommy Rybovich
receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for saving his crew and safely landing his flak-battered
plane. Eighteen-year-old Emil joins the Army Air Corps, serving on air-sea rescue boats. In1943
John becomes a procurement officer, learning business skills and new materials like aluminum
while serving in the Army transport and engineering division; this helps Rybovich and Sons
become the innovator of the modern big game boat.
1946-1951: John Rybovich Sr. turns over the reins to his sons. In 1946 Charles Johnson
orders a new boat for giant tuna fishing in the Bahamas, asking that the boat not exceed 34-feet
and it be fast and maneuverable. Launched in 1947, Miss Chevy II was dry and stable with the
first set of aluminum outriggers and first ball bearing fighting chair with integrated footrest. The
1972. “When that happened, Rybovich and Sons lost its soul,”
said Michael. “The yard’s shipwright Vince Santini, who’d helped
Tommy set up the Little Pete, his last boat, worked with my
dad (Emil), uncle Johnny, and Bill Jackman, building two more
afterwards but it wasn’t the same as having Tommy there. So
with family and financial concerns weighing on them, they sold
it to Bob Fisher.” Fisher would be the first of four more owners.
The sale was a decision both Emil and John Rybovich
expressed regrets over once Michael proved his worth as a boat
builder; once they saw the yard’s reputation for uncompromising
quality slipping with the new bottom line management style.
Michael ended up apprenticing under Bill Jackman and
Tommy’s former new boat crew of Jack Rhodes, Curt Wills
and Jimmy Becker. “They taught me the skills that allowed me
to go out on my own,” he said. That happened in 1984 when
Michael, who at the time was the yard’s new boat construction
foreman, objected to the owner’s production mindset. With his
father Emil and brother Marty Evans, Michael built his first
boat in 1984 in a small leased space on 28th Street in West Palm
Beach. The 32-foot Ruthie, now Charmer, was a throwback to
the day fishing boats first designed by Tommy. Ruthie also was
one of the first walkaround sportfishers built, an idea conceived

latter were designed by John Rybovich. With radius corners, the boat’s designer Tommy creates
a graceful, streamline craft with a high gloss paint finish and varnished mahogany cockpit, trunk
and transom. Powered by a set of 8-cylinder Chryslers, aircraft styled steering and instrumentation and duel station controls, it is one of the first 20-knot plus sportfishing boats. In the next
three years, Rybovich built three 28’s and two 37’s.
1952-1959: Wanting something new, Charles Johnson in 1952 commissions a new boat,
the world’s first modern day convertible sportfisher. Called Miss Chevy IV, it featured Rybovich’s
trademark broken sheer. Tommy’s goal was to eliminate the forward trunk cabin by raising the
foredeck to create added headroom while streamlining the deckhouse. Looking at his brother’s
sketches, John changed the sheer, penciling in a convex transition similar to that of a Chris Craft.

Michael has persevered as no custom builder
has ever had to after loosing the right to build boats
under own his name due to a copyright infringement
lawsuit with the yard’s next owner, Harvey Wilson.
Lacking the financial resources to fight the false
charges, Michael agreed not to use his family name in
business. They chose the name Ryco Marine because
it followed Rybovich in the phone book, his stepbrother Marty Evans explained.
During the next 20 years they built 20 boats
including Custom Shootout masterpieces like
Mickey Rupp’s China Girl, Castabar, and Rosemary,
under the Ryco name before being asked by
Rybovich and Son’s newest owner Wayne Huizenga
Jr. to come on board as boat builder in 2005. At
Rybovich and Sons he completed Coral C, Larry
Wilson’s first Lizzy Bee, Almar, Persistance and
Game On before the Great Recession hit and
Rybovich and Son’s new boat division was shut
down. This time when Michael left it was with
the owner’s blessing and permission to use his
name building boats. That’s led to what he calls
the rebirth, the opening of Michael Rybovich and
Sons in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where his son
Dusty, 27, his first born, is the yard’s in house naval
architect and marine engineer. A graduate of the
Rybovich Charmer built under the Ryco name.
prestigious Webb Institute of Long Island, New York, “he is the first
formally educated boat builder in the family,” says his proud father.
Most fathers are happy to see their sons develop an interest in the
family business and Michael is no exception.
“Marty and I were fortunate to work alongside our father for
25 years. I treasure every success, every failure, every argument and every
laugh we shared during that time and feel blessed to be in a position to
switch roles and watch the fire developing in a talented young man who
is a much quicker study than I ever was. His ability to picture the boat
before it is built, to observe the effects of modification on other parts of

1956-1959: John Rybovich creates a drying box to “acclimate” the Philippine mahogany
used for planking boats. Prior to this, mahogany used in boat construction was less stable;
prone to shrinkage. In 1956 naval architect Jack Hargrave joins Rybovich and Sons. During
his three years at Rybovich he helps design 13 boats including the yard’s first diesel powered
boat, Chevy Clipper for Charles Johnson. During this time Rybovich builds its first boat
utilizing epoxy resins.
1960-1965: Tommy Rybovich builds his first cold molded boat, Frisky, which has the
yard’s first set of jet drives. An experimental boat, the 30-footer is sold to Eddie Crawford
and is still fishing. In 1963, John Rybovich creates the format and rules for the renowned
Master’s Invitational Sailfish Angling Tournament. Nine years later, he creates the Gold Cup
Team Tournament for the Sailfish Club of Florida.
1966-1975: Tommy Rybovich and naval architect Giovanni Cardelli create some of the
yard’s “most perfectly proportioned” sportfishers including Annabet, Amigo and Little Pete,
utilizing the convex hull sections first suggested by Emil Rybovich. Little Pete is the last
boat set up by Tommy Rybovich, who dies of cancer in 1972. With help from shipwright

Dusty’s esthetic, he adds, is a lot like
Tommy’s. “He loves the classics,” said
Michael, who describes his son’s style as
traditional with a modern flare.
And though Michael drew the lines
for Wilson’s show stopping 64-foot

many of the components. The first boat
he’s drawn from the keel up is the new
yard’s third hull a conventional 68foot sportfish that currently is under
construction along with an 86-footer set
for launch later this year.
Hull number two, our largest so far,
like all our boats is something special, said
Michael. “We took our successful 78 and
stretched it without increasing the chine
beam,” he explained. “The reason being,
excessive chine beam can be a horsepower
parasite, contributing to a hard, wet ride.”
The new 86’ is light for her size
thanks to the FRP composite deckhouse
and bridge. The overhead is made from
carbon fiber that adds stiffness while
helping reduce the weight of the assembly
and lowers the center of gravity. That said
what everyone is talking is not the sleek
wraparound glass windshield but the
refrigerated 400 gallon under deck tuna
box that can hold a couple of full size
men as well, said Rybovich. Also under
the mezzanine are crew’s quarters and a
sizeable tackle room, features the owner’s
crew also appreciates.
In 2011 Michael and his team moved
to a 2-acre waterfront boatyard in Palm
Beach Gardens in need of a facelift with
a plan to bring back the service and the
atmosphere customers enjoyed at the
family’s old yard. Painting it a pale shade

opened in 1919. And instead of a
Travelift, Rybovich re-built the old marine
railway so they can move more boats in a
small area.
Built for Larry Wilson, Rybovich’s
partner in the real estate, Lizzy Bee was
launched in 2014 to enormous fanfare.
Not just because of her looks or that she
may well be the largest walkaround ever
built but for the technology that went
into it including the Volvo Penta IPS pods
Wilson asked for. The maneuverability
with the boat’s thrust based steering
system is impressive, said Rybovich.

1975-1984: Michael Rybovich begins work at Rybovich and Sons two weeks before its

International in 1984, building his first boat on his own, the 32-foot walkaround Ruthie for
2001-2010: Wayne Huizenga Jr. purchases Rybovich and Sons at 4200 Dixie Highway in

Much has been written about
Rybovich and Sons and the
his own boss, Michael says no. Hurricane Wilma destroys Ryco Marine’s facilities in 2005. With
three boats underway and no place to finish them, Michael rejoins (Huizenga’s) Rybovich and
Sons. Michael and Marty complete five boats before the Great Recession hits and Huizenga trims
the company’s new construction team. Michael and Marty leave on good terms.

2011- 2015: Company’s rebirth as Michael Rybovich and Sons takes place in 2011 after
purchase of a 2-acre boatyard in Palm Beach Gardens. Michael’s son and naval architect Dusty
Rybovich joins the company. With the addition of an engineered railway, covered sheds and
service yard, Michael completes the yard’s first boat, Larry Wilson’s 64-foot walkaround Lizzy Bee
in 2014. An 86- and 68-footer are slated for launch in 2015 and 2016.

Each year in June, I try to schedule a fishing expedition to an
unusual or extraordinary destination. This year it was Kona,
Hawaii, with Marlin Parker and the fine crew of the Marlin
. The day after arriving I took some time to acclimate
and meet the captain and crew of the Marlin Magic II. I was
met at the harbor, located just outside of downtown Kona by
Captain Marlin, deckhand Brent Cotton and deckhand/galley
girl/photographer Carol Lynne. The Marlin Magic II
II, a 54-foot
Allied, a cold molded hull similar to a Merritt/Rybovich, is
a solid sea boat and provides plenty of comfort for a fishing
party of four, let alone a single angler with an occasional
guest. Marlin, being a heavy tackle guy, had five 130’s ready
and spooled full with 40 pounds of line at the strike. After
a pleasant introduction, I journeyed back to the Royal Kona
and the next several days started to come into focus.
My first day on board the Marlin Magic II was like most first
days on a new boat - I hunted for and found a comfortable
place to watch the baits, got to know the crew, laid out my
gear and basically settled in for the ride. The first 2 days
on the water were pretty quiet with an occasional spearfish
exciting everyone. By day 3 the bite seemed to improve
with an early blue marlin, about 165 pounds, tagged and

Congratulations to the Plane Simple & Jim Jensen
Abaco Islands, Bahamas
FEBRUARY 2015 -- On February 16, 2015, the final tag in
the 2014 Custom Shootout IGMR that started in Abaco Islands,
Bahamas, surfaced to win the race after remaining on Fish 6, an
estimated 126 kg (275 lb) blue marlin, for the full programmed
duration of 180 days! The tag reported in the middle of the Atlantic
ocean, at an incredible point to point distance of 2,469 nautical
miles (nm) southeast from where it was deployed about 60 miles off
the coast of Virginia, USA. Congratulations to Jim Jensen of Plane
Simple, the angler and sponsor of the winning fish! It will be about
another month before a track is developed, and we can’t wait to see
where this fish actually swam.
Coming in a close second place was Fish 1, the only fish tagged
during the 2014 Custom Shootout by sponsor Mike Bozzuto of
My Love. The tag on Fish 1 popped up on November 11, 2014 and
revealed that the estimated 125 kg (275 lb) blue traveled an exact
point to point distance of 2,029 nm in the full programmed duration
of 180 days! Starting off in the Abacos, the blue swam north from
the Bahamas, hugging the US coast all the way to Massachusetts,
where it circled back down to Maryland and Virginia before
returning north and then eventually swimming far east offshore
in the Atlantic. Given the track pattern, we estimate that the blue
marlin’s total distance was more likely around 6,414 nm!
Jim Derrick of Layla sponsored the tag that his Captain Todd
Astles placed on Fish 4 after angler Tobin Wiener reeled in the
estimated 91 kg (200 lb) blue while fishing near Puerto Rico. After
reaching the 180 day programmed duration period on January 29,
2015, the tag popped off 1,309 nm away in the Atlantic, about
1,000 nm from South America, earning Fish 4 third place in the
race. As with fish 6, the track will be processed when the tag is
finished transferring data to the Argos satellites, which will likely be
completed within the month.
The fact that four of the six tags deployed during the 2014
Abaco Islands, Bahamas IGMR reached the full programmed
duration of 180 days is a huge success in itself. However, that
coupled with some very long tracks made this particular race
a veritable treasure trove of data for the IGMR. A huge thanks
go to Captain Skip Smith for making this event possible at the
Custom Shootout and to all the tag sponsors, anglers, and crew that
participated. A comprehensive report with more details regarding
