Heavenly Scents II
Here we are in this issue, dropping you a touch of Heaven in
total aroma serenity. As a continuation from the previous issue,
this issue we bring to you a concentration on the magnificent
honeysuckle and the ever anticipated Lemongrass.
Honeysuckle is a large, voluble shrub of the genus Lonicera. There
are over 300 species of honeysuckle in the Caprifoliaceous family,
found from Asia to North America. The shrub reaches heights of
20-30 ft (6-9 m), with thin, hairy branches. It has ovoid leaves that
range 1.2-3.2 in (3-8 cm) long by 0.6-1.6 in (1.5-4.0 cm) wide. The plant
flowers in late spring or early summer, depending on the species.
Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) blooms in the spring from
April to May, with fragrant white flowers touched with a shade of
purple that fade to yellow as they mature. The species of honeysuckle
that is found in North America, the United Kingdom, and western Asia,
Lonicera caprifolium, flowers in June. Generally, honeysuckle flowers
are 1.2-1.6 in (3-4) cm long, with an inner tube of approximately the
same length. All varieties of
honeysuckle are famous
for this tube, which is
extracted and sucked for
its sweet nectar. The shrub
also produces a black berry.
Despite the sweetness of
its fragrance and nectar,
the medicinal parts of the
plant are bitter, due to the
saponin in its stem, the 8%
tannin in the leaves and the
1% insitol in its flowers.
Usage:
- Works well as a detoxifier, and is best used for acute infections
and inflammations. As an alterative, which cleanses and purifies
the blood, and an antipyretic, which reduces heat with its cooling
properties, Japanese honeysuckle is best used for such ailments as
sore throats, swollen eyes, headaches, etc.
- Useful in treating acute illnesses, infections and inflammations. At
the onset of a cold, honeysuckle should be taken in combination
with chrysanthemum flowers. Several popular Chinese formulas,
such as yin chaio and ganmaoling, contain this herbal combination,
because it is a natural antibiotic.
- Honeysuckle can also be used to treat infections caused by
staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria.
- Honeysuckle should be used for acute conditions, and is not meant
to be used in the treatment of chronic illnesses.
- Honeysuckle works well against internal infections, and it can also
be used externally for skin irritation and infections. Honeysuckle
has been found useful in alleviating rashes ranging from skin
diseases to poison oak.
- For these types of skin ailments, honeysuckle is best used as a
poultice.
- For cuts and abrasions that may become infected, a honeysuckle
infusion can be applied externally. It is in treating skin infections
that the stems of honeysuckle are used.
Lemongrass is an aromatic
tropical plant with long,
slender blades that can
grow to a height of 5 ft
(1.5 m). Believed to have a
wide range of therapeutic
effects, the herb has been
used for centuries in South
America and India and has
also become popular in the
United States. Aside from folk medicine, lemongrass is a favourite
ingredient in Thai cuisine and dishes that boast a tangy, Asian flavour.
While there are several species of lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus
is the variety most often recommended for medicinal purposes.
Native to Southeast Asia, lemongrass can also be found growing
in India, South America, Africa, Australia, and the United States.
Only the fresh or dried leaves of lemongrass, and the essential oil
derived from them, are used as a drug. Cymbopogon citratus, which
belongs to the Poaceae family of plants, is also referred to as West
Indian lemongrass. Not to be confused with lemon balm, which is
an entirely different herb, lemongrass is considered by herbalists to
have several useful properties, including antibacterial, antifungal,
and fever-reducing effects.
Usage:
- Like other essential oils, lemongrass is also used as a fragrance
enhancer in many perfumes, soaps, and detergents. While not
approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), lemongrass
reportedly has a wide variety of therapeutic effects.
- Lemongrass is one of the most popular plant medicines in Brazil,
where it is used to treat nervous disorders and stomach problems.
- In the Amazon, lemongrass is highly regarded as a sedative tea.
When taken internally, lemongrass has been recommended for
stomach aches, diarrhoea, gas, bowel spasms, vomiting, fever, the
flu, headaches and other types of pain.
- The herb (or its essential oil) may be applied externally to help treat
acne, athlete’s foot, lower back pain, sciatica, sprains, tendonitis,
neuralgia, and rheumatism. To treat circulatory disorders, some
authorities recommend rubbing a few drops of lemongrass oil on
the skin of affected areas; it is believed to work by improving blood
flow.
- Like many essential oils, lemongrass is also used in aromatherapy.
- Considered an antiseptic and astringent, essential oil of
lemongrass is also used by some people to cleanse oily skin and
help close pores.
- Some herbalists recommend mixing a few drops of lemongrass
with a normal portion of mild shampoo to combat greasy hair.
- Lemongrass essential oil can also be used as a deodorant to curb
perspiration.
- Last but not least, the herb has a strong reputation as an insect
repellent. It is an important ingredient in several products designed
to keep bugs at bay. Some authorities recommend rubbing the
crushed herb directly on exposed areas of skin to avoid insect bites
when enjoying the great outdoors.
Stay tuned for an in-depth on Saffron and Cinnamon, another two

Collector’s Items
Entering the Glassy, Chinese Classic
Chinaware, in direct definition is a hard, white, translucent pottery with soft glaze, known as
porcelain. It originated in China but is now produced in various countries. Its composition is of kaolin
and ‘petuntse’.
Though made from the same basic raw materials, china and porcelain differ in how they are processed.
Porcelain is often associated as being a European product. It is the result of a low temperature ‘bisc’
produced with a high temperature gloss. China on the other hand, is made from a high temperature
‘bisc’ using a lower temperature gloss. Generally, porcelain is greyer in appearance than china.

Below are collections of Rare Chinaware collectables that can be found around the world:
Super set of 2 matched Japanese china plates with
raised relief accented with gold and perimeters whose
pinks and blues reflect the colours of the mid 20th
century when these plates were made. One has raised
relief of fruit hanging from a tree including apples, cherries, and
more, while the other depicts a bird sitting on a tree branch, leaves
falling off below. Each plate measures approximately 9.0” in diameter,
is marked on the back “Japan”, and come direct from a Coral Gables,
Florida waterfront estate. These look great either on a display stand in
a cabinet or on a nice wall shelf.
Pretty hand painted under glaze set of 5 Stetson china
plates in an exotic nature motif of green leaves and red
berries set against a white base and straight gray lines
that really make for an interesting design. The hand
painting is very well done and evokes a cheery, tropical feel. In 1946
Joseph W. Stetson, a designer of dinnerware, moved from Chicago to
take over the Illinois China Company that had been in operation in
Lincoln, Illinois since 1919. By 1955, Stetson claimed to be the largest
manufacturer of individual hand-painted ceramic dinnerware in the
United States. The plates are a nice size at 10.5” in diameter, and it’s
marked on the back with the manufacturer’s mark of the Stetson
China Co. of Lincoln, IL as well as “Copyright 1955” and “Hand painted
Under-Glaze”. These decorative plates are in very good condition and
are great to both display and use every day.
Rare set of green Royal China Colonial Homestead
dinnerware, always a collector favourite and direct
to you from a snowy Vermont country estate. From
top left, the pieces include 510.0” diameter dinner
plates with centre scene of pots over the fire and gun hanging on the
fireplace mantle, six 6.25” diameter bread plates with centre scene of
a spinning wheel, five 5.5” diameter and1.25” high berry bowls with
centre scene of a fireplace bellows, seven saucers 5.875” in diameter
with centre ring and bucket, and six tea cups with silhouette and
“God Bless Our House” inscription on the front measuring 2.0” high
and 3.5” in diameter. All the pieces are in very good condition, and
most pieces are marked on the bottom with the “Colonial Homestead
by Royal” mark, “Underglaze Patented”, “Circa 1750”, and “52B”.
Nice set of 5 Abingdon China plates with pink and
purple flowers, green leaf decoration and gold trim
border. The floral decoration is subtle and elegant,
with nice detail that adds to rather than overpowers
the pure white porcelain. Each of the set of 5 plates measure
approximately 10.25” in diameter and are properly marked on the
bottom “Abingdon Fine Porcelain China” and “Made in Japan.”
Outstanding set of 5 Sascha Brastoff coffee cups
and saucers c 1950s -1960s in a pattern and style
that’s very hard to find. We love the rich dark cream
coloured based glaze and the swirling abstract gray
that decorates the entire surface of both cup and saucer. Sascha
Brastoff had a full and eventful life that is reflected in his ceramic
artistry, and the decorative motifs found in his work range from
the whimsical to the erotic. The Sascha Brastoff ceramics factory
produced a wide range of products including vases, lamps, smoking
accessories figurines, dinnerware, and giftware. The most desirable
pieces are those with the full “Sascha Brastoff” signature, which this
set has, because they indicate that Brastoff personally designed and
painted those pieces. You couldn’t get a purer representation of the
finest Sascha Brastoff work, and all are properly marked with the full
Sascha Brastoff signature and California mark. The cups are a very
generous size at approximately 2.25” high and flaring out to 4.25”
in diameter, and the saucers are 6.125” in diameter. The entire set of
5 is in excellent condition, from a Westport, Connecticut waterfront
estate.
Originally owned by the great-grandmother of the
lady’s whose estate this set came from, this is a rare
German ‘lusterware’ set of 5 hot chocolate or espresso
cups and saucers. It has raised surfaces that give the
cups and saucers added design interest, but most of all is the beauty
of the ‘lusterware’ per say, especially the rare blue-ish-purple colours
trimmed in gold that make this obviously very expensive and high
quality set stand out. Each cup stands approximately 2.75” high,
2.25” in diameter and each saucer measures 4.5” in diameter, and
has a slightly curved outer edge trimmed in gold. Each cup features
the impressed mark “Germany”, is further decorated by vibrant and
realistic flowers, and leaves in a manner that you just didn’t see past
about the turn of the 20th century.
Extremely pretty German decorative plates from the
late 1940s / early1950s, with highly detailed painting
of fruits and nuts and trimmed in a terrific orange
colour reminiscent of the colour of Carnival glass.
These decorative plates have vivid colours and are
bright and cheery for any decor, and the open weave perimeter is a
technical achievement in china that always draws the eye. The plates
are in excellent condition and come in two sizes- 6.75” diameter and
9.75” diameter. Each set (6.75” or 9.75”) comes with two plates, one of
the apples and nuts and the other of the bananas and berries. Each is
marked on the back with the mark of Cico China, “Bavaria Germany”
and “U.S. Zone”, and all 4 are in excellent condition with no chips or
damage.
Pretty Johnson Brothers Windsorware English china
in the Garden Bouquet pattern, a terrific pattern
of summer flowers and wildflowers that reflect the
typical Johnson Brothers attention to detail. Both the
4.5” diameter saucer and the teacup, which is 2.25” high and 2.75” in
diameter, are fully marked with Johnson Brothers Windsorware mark
on the saucer and an impressed “England” on the cup.

Gadgets
And what does technology
have instore for tomorrow…
Stylish MP3 Watch
Bluetooth Handsfree
Though not quite cutting edge, Boyounb Tech has
come out with a product that will allow you to use
Bluetooth technology for a hands free cell phone
headset without a Bluetooth-compatible phone. The
product includes a Bluetooth dongle that attaches to
the ear phone aperture of your cell phone and comes
in 4 colours with matching dongles. Runs for about
USD120 though if you want to use it with a Bluetooth
phone (and without the dongle) it’ll cost you USD60.
In an era when everyone is hurried and constantly
multi-tasking, even our jewellery is starting to do more
than one thing at a time. One company has successfully
designed a watch that, if you can believe it, is an MP3
player as well. You won’t have to carry your MP3 player
in your pocket or find a fashionable carrying case
because this handsome
watch will allow you to have
music right at your wrist. Not
only is it a great MP3 player
but it is a quality watch as
well. It has Citizen Quartz
movement, a silver dial and
an adjustable leather strap.

nice, you’ll like the inside
even better. Equipped with
256 MB of storage, 8.5 hours
of music and an easy to use USB interface. This watch
can be worn to dinner, to the office, while working out,
or out with friends, and you’ll never be without the
hour or the hottest tunes. The MP3 watch also has a
built-in Li-Ion polymer battery, which will play for 10
hours before needing to be charged.
Soundbug
This device, made in the UK has about the size of an
average computer mouse. Plug it into a stereo or mp3
player and put it on any kind of material. Put it on a
door and the door will make sound like a speaker.
If you put this cool gadget on a window, you will
even hear the sound on either side of the window.
Quality is ok, it is not as good as a normal speaker but
it might come in handy for those music lovers that
love to travel. It requires 3 AAA batteries and has a
energy saving function. Batteries should last up to
4 hours. Features three-position switch: off, soft and
loud. 75-db output (depending on surface). Connect
2 Soundbugs together for stereo sound and double
the impact. With its sleek dimensions of 95mm
(length) x 50mm (width) x 35mm
(depth). It also only weighs 180
grammes (including batteries).

device that uses a 3.5mm jack
(MP3 player, CD player, Walkman,
PC, Laptop etc).
