A Message from the Dean
The smiles on the faces of the children who were here for Give Kids A Smile! said it all: They were having fun. It is so
important that a child’s first experience with a dentist is a pleasant one, and everyone who was involved with the event
made that happen. My sincere thanks to all who had a hand in making this annual event a huge success. I also want to
thank our many alumni who opened their offices for all, or part, of the day to participate in the event. One
of the most important things we do as dentists is help kids form good oral health habits.

GiveKidsASmile!event.Thenational
programprovidesfreeoralhealth
education,screeningsand,insomecases,
treatmentforchildrenages12andunder
whodonothaveregularaccesstodental
care.Itisheldinpartnershipwiththe
AmericanDentalAssociationandtheNew
JerseyDentalAssociation,andwasfunded
byagrantfromthePNCFoundation.
Becausemanyofthekidswereseeinga
dentistforthe irsttime,organizersmadesuretheexperiencewasa
pleasantone.OntheNewarkcampusamagicianputonaninteractive
show,anddentalstudentsfashionedanimalsoutofballoons,painted
thekids’faces,andplayedcarnival‐stylegameswiththem.“Wedon’t
wantthesechildrentobeafraidofgoingtothedentistinthefuture;
wewantthemtorememberthisdayasanenjoyableone,”explainsDebra
Goldsmith,RDH,MS,associateprofessor,anddirectoroftheNewarkevent.
“Wehopeaftertodaytheyestablishgoodoralhealthandhygienehabits,
andwewantthemtoknowtheyhaveadentalhomehereatNJDS.”
Atotalof34kidswereseenatNJDS’sthreeextramuralsites,and30were
seeninScotchPlains,bringingthenumbertomorethan400.NJDSalumni
acrossthestateopenedtheirof icestounderprivilegedkids,andmorethan
150UMDNJfaculty,staffandstudentsvolunteeredattheevent.

HowardH.Pomeranz,DDS,clinicalprofessor,DepartmentofEndodontics,passedaway
onJanuary27,2013,attheageof77.
AgraduateofColumbiaHighSchoolinMaplewood,NJ,HamiltonCollegeandthe
UniversityofPennsylvaniaSchoolofDentalMedicine,hewasamemberoftheMatthewH.
CryerSociety,thehighestacademichonorawardedatPennDentalMedicine.Healsore‐
ceivedtheMosbyBookawardforacademicscholarshipthere.
Dr.PomeranzservedintheU.S.Armyfrom1957to1958andintheArmyReservefor
sixyears.HecametoNJDSin1969andremaineduntilhisdeath.Duringhistenurehe
servedasdirectorofpostgraduateendodonticsfrom2001to2003.Hewasalsoaclinical
professorandco‐directorofpostgraduateendodonticsatColumbiaUniversityfrom1995
to1998.Hewastheauthorofmanyjournalarticlesandlecturedaroundtheworld.In
1976hebecameaDiplomateoftheAmericanBoardofEndodontics.
Inadditiontoteaching,Dr.Pomeranzwasinprivatepracticefrom1963to1994,pri‐
marilyinMillburn,N.J.,withGeraldFishelberg,DDS,aclinicalprofessorin
EndodonticsatNewJerseyDentalSchool.
AnardentNewYorkGiantsfan,Dr.PomeranzwasborninNewark,grewupin
MaplewoodandlivedinEastOrangefornearly50years.Heissurvivedbytwo
sisters,AvisKnif in,ofPrincetonJunction,andEllenSax,ofBrookline,MA.,andtheir
husbands.Healsoleavestwonieces,AbigailKnif in,ofNewYorkCity;andJenniferJones
andherhusband,ofNorthBrunswick,N.J.Othersurvivorsareagrandnieceandagrandnephew.
