EMC MirrorView Software
storage systems storage networking storage software storage management partner solutions infrastructure services EMC MirrorView Software Gain productivity from critical information while maximizing data availability through advanced remote disaster recovery. EMC MirrorView™ provides highly available data storage across a campus environment. By maintaining synchronous data mirroring between EMC CLARiiON® FC4700 arrays, MirrorView ensures data availability of byte-for-byte mirrored images. MirrorView is array based, so there is no impact on hosts, and it is easily managed from within CLARiiON Navisphere® management software. MirrorView is also integrated with EMC SnapView™ point-in-time copy software, which is available for the CLARiiON FC4700. Together, MirrorView and SnapView provide a unique solution for online data availability and disaster recovery. The Big Picture • Provides synchronous mirroring of critical data between two CLARiiON FC4700 systems • Allows for faster disaster recovery by enabling failover to a secondary site • Integrates with SnapView software for secondary site backup operations • Operates on the array and is transparent to host machines and applications • Maintains continuous data integrity during disasters via write intent and fracture logs • Easily managed from within EMC Navisphere software Manage MirrorView operations from within EMC Navisphere software. EMC MirrorView Software The demand for data availability is coming from every level of the organization as more and more businesses require 24x7 information access. Successful companies recognize that information needs to be at the center of their businesses, and it must be shared, managed, and protected in order to realize its full potential as a competitive advantage. MirrorView is easily set up and managed from within EMC’s “Windowslike,” Navisphere management software. In a MirrorView configuration, a host is attached to the primary or production CLARiiON FC4700 array. The host writes to the primary array, which records the data and synchronously writes the same data to the secondary FC4700 array. An acknowledgement is sent back to the host once the data has been written to both the primary and secondary arrays, ensuring a complete transaction on both sides of the mirror. The resulting mirror can be used for many purposes, most importantly, fast failover to the secondary site so business operations can continue. Restore rather than recover with faster restart from disk. In today’s typical business environment, the ability to access an up-to-the-second copy of production data on another system in a different geographic location offers incredible protection in the event of a disaster situation. By creating a synchronous mirror between two CLARiiON FC4700 arrays, MirrorView maintains an exact byte-for-byte copy of your production data in a secure, remote location. The mirrored copy can then be used for failover, online restore from backup, and running backups against a SnapView snapshot of the remote mirror. Running on the CLARiiON FC4700 array, MirrorView operates in a highly available environment, minimizing exposure to internal issues and external disaster situations, while minimizing recovery time if a disaster does strike. Data protection throughout the entire mirroring process is maintained through several controls built into MirrorView. Fracture logs track changes in the event that the primary array loses contact with the secondary array. Whether the unavailability of the secondary array was planned or unplanned, when the secondary array returns to availability, the pending writes in the fracture log are written to the secondary array restoring its consistent state. A write-intent log is also kept in the unlikely event of a primary array failure. Upon repair of a primary array, MirrorView will access the write-intent log to make any changes (that were in process between the two arrays during the failure) to the primary data. Then, a partial re-sync with the secondary array can take place to return to a consistent state between the primary and secondary arrays. A partial re-sync minimizes the time necessary to reach a consistent state between mirrors, because only a partial update of the data is needed. Remote data replication and arraybased software. MirrorView operates on the CLARiiON FC4700 array. This means that it is transparent to host machines and their applications. MirrorView is powered by the dual microprocessors on the FC4700 storage processors. By off-loading the mirroring process from the host to the array, significant performance increases are realized on the host machine, freeing it to service I/Os, not manage the data. Hostbased mirroring will stop upon a processor failure. But because the storage processors of the FC4700 are redundant, MirrorView operation is protected from a processor failure. MirrorView allows you to easily move data between arrays. In conventional data migration scenarios, you typically experience a service outage in order to gain a consistentstate copy of the data being moved. Then, you have the time-consuming process of copying the data to tape media, physically transferring the tape to the new location, and restoring the data to the new array. MirrorView can be used to nondisruptively migrate MirrorView sessions are quickly and easily managed from within EMC Navisphere management software. data from one CLARiiON FC4700 array to another in a campus environment, without a service outage. This allows simplified consolidation of remote locations and workload reallocation when one location outgrows an application and another site must be brought online. MirrorView integrated with SnapView for secondary array pointin-time copies. EMC SnapView works with MirrorView to create snapshots of the mirrored data at the remote site. Both SnapView and MirrorView are tightly integrated and managed from within CLARiiON Navisphere software. These resulting snapshot images can then be backed up to disk or tape, allowing for a backup solution that utilizes remote tape units and hosts that are typically idle or experiencing minimal usage. The fully read and writable snapshot copy of the mirrored data can also be mounted by a secondary host to perform decision analysis, application testing, and data warehouse refreshes.
