The Kids of Orroroo Carrieton do it again
Up to 26 Children from Yatina, Pekina, Orroroo, Morchard, Carrieton and
Black Rock made a wonderful contribution to our Communities
redevelopment and beautification during the Easter End of First Term
School Holidays
The Civic Pride, Self Worth and raw enthusiasm of the children is so impressive that some feel
that this initiative should form part of the annual operations of the Council.
The Council is thrilled that Josh Ackland, Stephanie and Kane Bertram, Bonni, Jade and Kate
Brooks, Tim Byerlee, Sophie Chapman, Libby Dyer, Cameron Foulis, Cody Hounsell, Scott
Kuerschner, Beau Lee, Jo Redden, Ben, Hayley, Matt and Melanie Reid, Christian Richards,
Ethan Shackleford, Craig, Luke and Michael Tapscott, Joshua and Mitchell Tezacker and Brad
Tyas made up a crew that worked brilliantly through the whole process.
There has beautification work at the Big Gum Tree, at the top of Tank Hill and general cleaning
up at the Cemetery and the Orroroo Recreation Ground.
It was hard going at times and required the use of a hydraulic post hole digger and a compressed
air driven jack hammer.
There is still a load more work to do in the Community and on the basis that
we now have a group of 25 to 30 children interested in working we can more
formally and rigorously develop and plan the actual work to be undertaken.
The benefit for the children will be higher productivity, greater reward and a
heightened sense of achievement.

It has been previously reported the consortium Solar
Cities that the Council is a member has been
successful in receiving development funding for the
preparation of a major bid to the Australian
Government.
Bidding for the $75m Australian Government funding
remains highly competitive and its anticipated there
will be a number of bids from throughout Australia.
This bid is nearing completion and makes provision for an investment of
$100,000 for trials in Orroroo Carrieton to prove the effectiveness of Solar Energy
generation and for the switching of surplus energy to arterial grids.

Orroroo Water Filtration Project
Quality drinking water is a basic tenement of developed communities.
To continue the Council’s endeavour to make Orroroo and the region as a whole a
more attractive place for potential new residents the Council has determined to seek
the support of the highest levels of the Australian Government to secure Australian
Water Commission funding.
Aged Care and Independent Living
The Councils persistence to create opportunities for increased Aged Care and
Independent Living services has been rewarded with the Church of Christ Bethanie
Group based in Western Australia agreeing to undertake a feasibility study for the
provision of additional and new services.

As a demonstration of the collaborative approach to this work the Council’s
Economic Development Planner and the Chief Executive Officer of the Orroroo &
District Health Service have commenced the development of relevant statistical data
to assist Church of Christ in their feasibility assessment.

As a father I couldn’t but feel in a very limited way what
our Heavenly Father must have felt as he allowed Jesus to
go to the cross and take all the pain and suffering of this
world upon himself. I am sure God would have wanted to
intervene and take away some of the pain that Jesus
endured but He knew it was a journey that Jesus had to
walk alone. God has given us the great gift of being
family, and in families when one member suffers the
whole family suffers. As you go through a difficult time
and you have family and friends by your side, the burdens
can be lightened by the knowledge that others are
journeying with you in prayer and practical support.
My prayer is that if you go through a challenging or
painful time may you know the comforting prayerful
support that we as family have experienced over the last
six months.

GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP

The Northern Regional Development Board has sponsored this
FREE workshop for persons who wish to learn more about the
skills of sourcing grant money.
Cathy Thompson will be the guest speaker, sharing her
experience and notes that will be very interesting.

RSL Women’s Auxiliary
Our meeting was held on April 13th. We had 8 ladies attend led by President Elaine. The minutes and
correspondence were read and then dealt with. We held a successful badge day on Friday 21st April. Our Sunday
service was well attended, led by Pastor Grant Jewell, his address was on the future. Thank you to all who helped
with the playing and singing of songs and also for the beautiful wreaths.
On 6th March, 6 Legacy ladies travelled to Government House for morning tea with Governor Marjory Nelson
Jackson. There were 45 on our bus from throughout the mid north and we had a marvellous time. Thank you to our
driver who kindly picked us up from our front doors.

The Dawn Service on the 25th April was welcomed by
President Elaine. It was a lovely morning and Pastor
John Cozens gave a very meaningful address and the
’Last Post’ was played. The 10th and 27th were
represented by S.S.G.T Billie Garrett of Port Pirie who
was originally a gentleman from Queensland. He was
very impressed with our town, the club rooms and the
beautifully cooked breakfast by the hard working Lions
Club. Thank you to everyone who donated towards the
breakfast it was very much appreciated.

Our next meeting will be held on May 11th at 2pm. A

Orroroo Netball Club Report
Well, the season has started and moved into full swing. After having the first week of games and then a
break for Easter, it is good to now be playing games week in week out.
The coaches have now got most teams settled, and now have the opportunity to work on specific plans for
the teams.
Recently, Kerry Duffy, Fiona Dignan, Louise and Hannah Custance participated in an Orientation to
Coaching (Level 0) clinic at Booleroo. Thanks for representing the club girls, and making an effort to travel
across. As a club we are aiming for all our coaches to have a minimum of a Level 0 accreditation.
Results for the first three weeks of games are as follows:
April 8th vs Jamestown Peterborough
Being the first home game for the year, it was important to get the season off to a good start. We won 7
out of the 10 games for the day – a great effort against such quality opposition in J-P.
A Grade: lost 39 – 45
A close game that went down to the wire – much promise shown from the new recruits to the team, and much to
work with and improve for the rest of the season.
B Grade: won 30 – 26
A close game that went our way – very defensive game and great effort by all.
C Grade: won 42 – 31
A good win for the team and some great movement through the court, with excellent shooting to finish it off.
D Grade: lost 36 – 41
This game was nail biting, and probably gave Janice a few heart stoppers. After a slowish start, the girls certainly
took it up to the opposition but not quite enough to get over the line.
E Grade: won 44 – 32
This game was probably never in doubt after the first half, with the girls holding on to the comfortable lead
established in the first half.
F Grade: won 48 – 33
Another good comfortable win for the team – you can never go wrong when you have Michelle shooting the goals,
and being ably assisted by Sharon and Cheryl.
G Grade: won 20 – 18
What a close game to start the season! These girls certainly have good steady heads on their shoulders for when
they are put under pressure.
H Grade: lost 16 – 27
The girls found their feet during the game and showed some good signs for the coaches. They are a young team and
will improve greatly over the season. Next time girls!
I Grade:
won 31 – 12
An excellent result from this enthusiastic and skilled side – so many combinations can be used on the court and still
get a sound result. They should have a great year ahead of them.
J Grade:
won 24 – 9
It is great to see these young girls moving through the ranks from minis to now be in Junior netball – energy to burn
and willingness to give all and succeed. Great result girls!
April 22nd vs BMW
These matches always provide some inspiring and close contests from our opponents from over the
plains. We won 7 out of the 10 games for the day again – a great effort by all.
A Grade: won 49 – 32
What a great result for the team – their first win for the season. Hopefully many more to come
B Grade: won 40 – 39
You would think that the team are trying to give the coach a heart stopper (and the supporters)! A high quality
contest that fell our way – well done by all!

April 22nd vs BMW …….. Cont
C Grade: won 48 – 35
Another resounding win for the team – these girls certainly know how to play. Great to see the young girls performing
well in defence.
D Grade: lost 48 – 52
Another close contest for the young team in such a high scoring game. They are itching closer to that win – just need
to hold on and get over the line now!.
E Grade: won 50 – 29
Another comfortable win for the team, led by their coach in girls. Great effort by all in all parts of the court.
F Grade: lost 42 – 47
There wouldn’t be too many times that this team have faced defeat in the last couple of years – a great contest that
saw the opposition get the points. Next time girls!
G Grade: won 25 – 15
A little more comfortable result for the team – great effort by all.
H Grade: lost 13 – 43
A quality opposition was who they faced in this game – keep working hard girls.
I Grade:
won 32 – 18
Another excellent result – if you get an opportunity – go and watch this team because these girls are our stars of the
future.
J Grade:
won 15 – 6
Another resounding win for the team – the defences certainly restrict the opposition very well and provide their
shooters with plenty of opportunities.
April 29th vs Southern Flinders
The first of the away games for the season, and a wet one at that! We won 7 and drew one game. An
improved overall effort
A Grade: lost 38 – 43
So close for the girls – they were in the game till the end – Southern Flinders just too strong by the final whistle
B Grade: lost 30 – 37
A very interesting game with both teams asserting themselves at different stages of the game. SF got the jump in the
last quarter and it was enough for them to hold on for the win. A hard job for our girls against the opposition giants in
the Fiebig girls!
C Grade: won 49 – 39
This team is travelling along well at the moment. Consistent high shooting scores each week putting the pressure
back on the opposition
D Grade: won 35 – 31
Finally a win for the team! A strong first quarter effort helped them to hang on – just need to keep working hard for
the whole game. Janice’s heart is still holding on – just!
E Grade: won 40 – 30
These girls are also travelling along well – great efforts throughout the whole court
F Grade: won 38 – 36
Back on the winners list. A nail biter though – they had to come from behind to get there and then hold off a
determined SF who had the game drawn with a minute to go.
G Grade: won 27 – 12
A great result again – even with the players playing in some different positions.
H Grade: drew 16 – 16
So close girls! Keep fighting and remaining determined – that first win isn’t too far away
I Grade:
won 22 – 12
Great win again for the girls – particularly in the wet. Great skills shown
J Grade:
won 23 – 15
A great win for the girls again – Robyn certainly has them motoring along well.

Orroroo Centennial Show
The committee of the Orroroo Agricultural & Horticultural Society Inc. are busy planning our
centennial show for Saturday, September 23rd. This is not our 100th consecutive show as the
event was cancelled during the depression, the 2nd World War and sometimes during extremely
severe droughts. Our first show was in 1882.
We are trying to follow the theme “Back To Our Past” and are looking
for appropriate historical vehicles or other
machinery to have as a static display. If
you have something suitable, if not working,
please let us know about it.
We are also looking for expressions of
interest in running the BBQ and Afternoon Tea on show day. The
society has bbq’s available. If your committee or group is interested,
please contact us by the end of May.
All Orroroo Agricultural & Horticultural Society Inc. members wish to thank the Orroroo Carrieton
District Council for their support and Chairman Kathy Bowman for her kind words in the April,
Goyder’s Line Gazette. Fortunately we do not clash with any football grand finals this year and
look forward to a great event on the 23rd.

Mein name ist Adeline von Spieler und I am from Witzberg in Germany. I arrived in your country just one
month ago and am loving myself here! I am so very pleased to be your new “German Overseas
Exchange Head Reporter In Nearby Golf” and am excited to be living mein next six months here in your
lovely village. Do not be too concerned zat I have not played this game before, I am sure it vill be much
like the downhill skiing, No?

Daly Day on the Green! In what can only be described as perfect Aussie conditions, “Golf vas the Winner”
at ze Opening Competition Day in Orroroo! I met 19 lovely competitors zat day and they all looked to be
having such fun! They played with Ambrose, (who I did not meet), and always enjoyed hitting the best
placed ball even though I thought zat was not allowed, I do not know, I vill have to ask Ambrose!
Anyway, after playing 12 holes and learning some lovely new words I
headed to the club with everyone else. Some very impressively
painted golf balls and glasses were awarded to the crème de le crème
players of the day:- Team Winners - Naish & Lizzie Reid, Beven
O'Loughlin and Megan Goehring (nee Daly), Mens Longest Drive - Tim

I vas otherwise busy this day but I know that 5 golfing legends braved the
excellent conditions to play 18 holes without having a Stroke so for that
they must be commended! Congratulations to ‘Shutey’ for winning on the
day with a score Off the Stick of 72 and a net of 64. One day soon I hope
to know vot that means!

On a day when the rival BMW footy-clan descended on our quiet
village, many golfing gladiators took to the fields in battle. They
conquered many challenges far beyond their own imaginations! Two
such fighters were Mark McCarthy, a provisional player who got a
mighty 73 Off the Stick and a Net of 49! And Grant Chapman who,
legend has it, burned up the course! Other Smartie Pants zat day

I thought I would Come ‘n Try cleaning the haus zat day but I wish I vas at the Golf! My sources tell me
that Golf Kings, Herr Snowy and Herr Frommie provided a golf coaching clinic zat vas most appreciated
by such fronters as Lachie B, Andrew C and Amanda D! To the new people - We all look forward to
staring at your golf! (Mein English is sometimes nicht so good.) Many thanks to Michele Catford for the
time taken to organize the day!

Wednesday Golf
It is with regret that I work Mondays to Fridays as a ski instructor so do not get the chance to go to golfing
days on a Wednesdays. This makes me very sad. However! Rumour tells me of many wonderful ‘New
Starlettes’ on the scene this year and I believe they need special mention - Frauleins Helen Reddaway,
Amanda Dyer, Robyn Hughes and Marg Chapman! “Go you good things!” Wednesday competitors have
not yet had the chance to play 18 holes due to little obstacles called school holidays and ill health! Their
12 Hole Open Day (12/4/06) saw Lyn Hounsell and Marg Chapman claim the day! I am sure all are
rearing to go for tomorrows (26/4/06) 1st Round of the Silver Spoon – it vill be very interesting to see who
has the Silver Spoon in their mouth at the end of the day?!
And in Conclusion…
Do not be forgetting now that there vill be many automobiles in the car park on May 6th when we vill be
hosting Peterborough and Jamestown for Triangular Competition here!
Please also be remembering zat Sunday May 14th vill be our Mixed and Mens Pinehurst
Competition!! Vot fun!! Please be coming to meet me and we vill have such merriment! Kick off
is at 11am so be putting it in your diaries, OK?

MOTO X RACING
Off to a good start for the racing season for Matt Byerlee. Racing at Port Augusta
Round 1 on the 19/3/06 coming in first place in the Pro Lites 125/250F class.
On the 9/4/06 racing the Baroota Enduro, where Matt Byerlee and Phil Watts
partnered the 19.5 km track 3 hour enduro. Coming in first place in the open
enduro class. Cheers to Phil Watts from Flinders Motorcycles.
King of the Gulf - Easter Weekend
Matt put in a good effort racing in the 125/250F
clubman class, qualifying for all the major events. Coming in
8th place in the 8 lap feature race at the end of the day.
Kimba Club Day 23/4/06
Racing at Kimba for the first time, coming in 2nd place in the
Pro Lites 125/250F class. Kimba have a 10 lap handicap
feature race at the end of the day. All powers in the seniors,
Matt coming in 3rd.

The Roos got away to a good start to the 2006 season with a 57 point win over last years
wooden spooners. Our boys played well despite losing 6 of last years A grade players but the
effort of the 6 colts who have moved up and 2 new recruits from up north look capable of
forming a reasonably good team. The game was played at Orroroo in fine sunny conditions.
The Roos were first to score with Dignan kicking the first goal of the year after 2 minutes
play. The Maggies were quick to reply with 2 goals in 2 minutes and led for the only time in
the game. Rosenberg a new recruit from Leigh Creek playing on a flank kicked the next goal
and shortly after scored another then with 2 goals from Dignan the Roos led by 20 pts at the
first change. The Maggies kicked the first 2 goals of the second quarter but the Roos
dominated the rest of the quarter with goals from L Ellery, B O’Dea, Blackwell and Dignan
to give the Roos a 34 pt lead at the long break and the Maggies could see the game slipping
away from them. Jamestown kicked the first and their only goal of the 3rd term while the
Roos went further ahead with goals from Rosenberg and B O’Dea to take a winning score
into the run home. Again the Maggies were first to score in the final quarter and both teams
picked up the scoring rate with 12 goals being kicked for the quarter Jamestown doubled their
tally and the Roos kicked 7 from L O’Dea, B O’Dea, J Byerlee, Dignan, Rosenberg and
Blackwell 2. The Roos best was Dignan on the ball with 5 goals . Half back flankers Foulis
and Clark played well and B O’Dea roving with 3 goals had a good day. Rosenberg on a
flank was quick and skillful and his 4 goals showed he is a very useful find for the team. L
Ellery rucked well and the Roos won most of the centre breaks Best for Jamestown
Peterborough were Redden, Mesecke and Amey. The B grade battled hard but last years
premiers were too good The sen colts had a runaway win over a weak Magpie combination
but the juniors found their opposition too big and too strong

Andrew Byerlee led the team out for his 250th senior game and was a prime factor in his
teams win over last years premiers who started favourites in this encounter. Byerlee has
been a solid defender ever since his first game in senior football in 1991 and this was a good
example of his dashing game. Byerlee won the toss and the Roos had first use of a 2 goal
wind. Bennett kicked the first goal after 6 minutes play then L Ellery kicked his first. B M
W pushed the ball up the hill and goaled . Clark goaled for the Roos and they led by 13
points at the first change. The Roos were first to score in the second quarter with a goal
from Blackwell but the Lions had most of the play for the rest of the quarter and added 4
goals to their score to take the lead. A late goal from B O’Dea evened it up but the Lions led
by 4 points at the long break. The Roos kicked the first 3 goals of the 3rd quarter through
Slade, Rosenberg and J Byerlee but then the Lions cut loose and kicked the next 5 against
the wind and were well on top until L O’Dea goaled late in the quarter. The Lions led by 9
points at the last change and with the wind at their backs looked to have the points in the
bag. The Roos responded to a last quarter effort and their young brigade finished full of
running while the tiring Lions ran out of legs and failed to make any use of the wind. The
Roos scored 5 goals from Dignan, Bennett, A Byerlee and L Ellery 2 into the wind while the
Lions struggled and could only manage one goal for the quarter. A Byerlee got the first vote
for a solid game at full back and had enough energy to run up forward and kick a goal. The
young lads had the stamina to run the game out with J Byerlee, B O’Dea, W Bennett and B
Foulis being among the best players . The two Ellery boys in ruck also played well while
the older experienced players directed the play. It was a good win and despite the loss of so
many of last years players the future looks bright . Best for B M W Foulis, Sanders and
Matheson. The B’s have picked up a few new players but are struggling to match their
opponents. The Senior Colts are performing well but again the Juniors can’t compete
against the bigger stronger lads they come up against.

The battery drive continues to be a success and we are almost ready to send another

A big thank you must go to John O’Dea, who donated money from his fundraising concerts held in the
Orroroo Town Hall last year, The Knights of the Southern Cross and the Ladies Auxiliary who all
contributed towards the purchase of a ‘Deluxe Tilt Bed /Palliative Chair’. This chair will enable patients to
sit out of bed, make transferring them from bed to chair much easier and safer for patients and staff and
also allows patients to sleep comfortably. The chair can be easily manoeuvred and allows nurses to take
patients outside on the verandah so they can enjoy the
sunshine.

This event is being presented by newly formed community group “Remarkable Festivals” (a sub committee of the Mt
Remarkable Agricultural Society) with support from the Regional Health Services Program in response to issues raised by
local youth around lack of local entertainment. This issue was raised at a Youth Forum held in Melrose on the 13th of
February 2006 and is the start of a bigger plan to address rural youth decline.
The Regional Health Services Program are also holding a music program (facilitated by John O’Dea) to mentor young
people who have an interest in music and provide them with the opportunity to learn performance skills. The workshops
are also aimed at encouraging young people to follow their dreams and giving them some encouragement and support.
Some of the young people involved in this program will have the opportunity to perform at the Northstar Inn on Sunday 30th
of April 2006 and at the Steve Forde concert (they are being called the North StarMakers).
This is the first stage in developing a bigger vision for local events and festivals at this premier venue. The committee feel
that Mt Remarkable offers the ideal backdrop to host a range of musical events within the future. This is just the beginning
of what we feel is a very exciting venture.
Funds raised from the concert will be used to sponsor future events, assist in upgrading the facilities at the Melrose
Showgrounds and create a “community treasure chest (local businesses are also supportive by offering supplies at cost
price ie no profits are being made) for supporting projects that directly benefit local youth. Youth programs will be aimed at
addressing rural youth decline and supporting young people to either create opportunities in the country or return to the
country after further study. In essence this is all about sustaining rural communities in both a social and economic sense.
Steve Forde is an example of a young rural person following his dreams and creating his own opportunities. He is a farmer
from Cowra in New South Wales with a background in rodeo riding. He is extremely popular as a performer in the eastern
states and has a strong supporter base throughout our state. Remarkable Festivals are privileged to be hosting his only
South Australian performance. Also appearing are Shae Fisher (Steve Forde’s support artist), John O’Dea (local hero and
mentor to young musicians), Penny Burke and Emily Reid, plus the late night party band, Fine Form.
The weekend also includes the inaugural Remarkable Ute Muster which is being organized by a young person from the
local community. Entries are now open and utes will be judged on Sunday the 7th. Over $2000 in prize money and prizes
is being offered and includes eight categories: chicks ute, feral ute, rowdy & loud ute, town ute, street ute, 4WD ute,
classic ute, REMARKABLE UTE (grand champion).
The committee who are a group of hardworking community members interested in supporting their community are
appealing to the whole region to get behind this event. This event will promote community vitality and energy, showcase
local talent, and provide what promises to be a great night of entertainment. So this is your chance to come along and
support our young people.
We also need interested community members to volunteer one or two hours on the night to help with things like the bar,

“HEART MOVES” Exercise Program
“HEARTMOVES” is a low to moderate exercise program suitable for anyone who hasn’t done any exercise in a
while. The program starts gently and participants exercise at their own pace, doing activities for which they have no
physical restrictions.
The “HEARTMOVES” programs are run by accredited fitness leaders who are specifically trained in managing low to
moderate exercise programs. The programs are open to everyone and are designed to be safe for people with
cardiac or diabetic conditions, providing they have had clearance from their medical officer.
Advantages of regular exercise can:
Lower blood pressure
Improve cholesterol control
Help improve blood glucose control in diabetes
Help manage weight
Improve well being and flexibility
Several staff members of the Orroroo & District Health Service Inc have been, and will be trained as
“HEARTMOVES” leaders in the next couple of months, and it is anticipated that a series of exercise sessions will be
run for local community members who wish to take part in the nest couple of months. At the moment the sessions
will be held at the hospital in the Multi Purpose Room, but ultimately we hope to be able to use the Community Gym,
where ever that facility is developed.
Any one who is interested in taking part in these sessions in the future can obtain further information from Di Barrie,

PUTTING YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD!
If you are 50 years of age of or older, chances are that you know someone who has had a fall. You will also know the
devastating effect that falls can have on someone’s lifestyle and independence.
There are many environmental and internal factors that may increase your risk of falling. One of these is your
physical fitness. Good nutrition and being physically active will keep you fit and therefore reduce you chances of
falling and decrease injuries associated with falls.
It is recommended that you participate in weight bearing exercise on most days of the week. That means exercise
that supports your own weight is best, such as walking or line dancing. If balance is a concern then consider
undertaking regular Tai Chi, a gentle form of exercise proven to improve balance and decrease falls risk. Carol
Ackland conducts Tai Chi sessions at the Hospital every Thursday, and more information can be obtained by
contacting Kathy on 8658 1054.
Here are some tips to keep you safe whilst exercising:
If you use a walking stick or walking aid, ensure that you have a non-stick/slip stopper fitted.
Ensure that your shoes are comfortable and well fitted.
Start slowly and exercise at your own pace.
Choose an activity that you enjoy or exercise with a friend, that way it will be easier to keep up motivation.
Remember to check with your GP before commencing any fitness regime.
A balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates and fibre will assist you to keep up the energy needed during exercise and
will improve your general health. For healthy bones choose calcium rich foods and be careful not to miss meals as
this may make you feel listless and unable to exercise.

Walk Around Australia Challenge
The streets seem a bit busier these days,
lots of walkers!
We have 140 registered walkers - unbelievable!
Due to the overwhelming response everyone did not get a
hat, drink bottle, pen, sunscreen etc. I did however try to
share it around so everyone did get something. Sorry!
In our first fortnight we have been travelling at an
astounding pace 2,600.68 kms - We are in Brunswick Heads
NSW.
In our second fortnight we picked up the pace and traveled
3,094.21 kms - Reaching Larrimah NT.
Due to the Easter Break I did not get everyone’s fortnightly
totals, the last four weeks will be added together for the final
result.
Keep you posted on our progress and results in the next
gazette. Don’t forget to check out the Map of Australia
Thank you to everyone who has participated, making this
initiative a worthwhile event.
Remember to continue your walking and include any
physical activity into your daily routine, it improves your
health outcomes in many positive ways.

5 Positive Steps to a Healthy Heart
Fact: Heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women in Australia.
Your heart needs care for life. A healthy heart is about enjoying a healthy lifestyle and making this a part
of your every day life.
Everyone (any age) can do something to help prevent heart disease. The good news is that if you lead
a healthy lifestyle, as outlined below, you can reduce your risk of developing heart disease, and help
preventing it getting worse if it already exists.
1
Be Smoke Free
Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood and damages the artery walls. Stopping
smoking is the single most important thing you can do to reduce the risk of developing heart
disease. For more information contact your GP, Health Nurse or call the Quitline on 131 848.

Enjoy Healthy Eating
Cholesterol and fat contribute to the deposits which build up in the artery walls and cause disease.
You can help lower you cholesterol level and limit further artery clogging by reducing the amount of
saturated fats you eat. Saturated fat is found in fatty meats, full cream dairy products, butter, most
fried takeaway foods and commercially baked products. Replace saturated fats with moderate
amounts on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as canola, olive and sunflower oils.

Be Physically Active
The body is designed to move, and regular, moderate physical activity is good for the heart. Being
active is also a great way to have fun. Physical activity can also help control other risk factors
including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight, and diabetes. The Heart
Foundation recommends that people include 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity physical
activity (such as brisk walking) on most days of the week. It can be accumulated in shorter bouts
eg. three 10minute walks.

What inspires a man to climb
The mountains in the autumn-time?
Is it just because they're there?
Or for some idiotic dare?
Or just to prove one's fit enough
To complete a climb that's tough?
Each one of these, at times, is right;
But others climb for sheer delight.
How can one describe the thrills,
As row on row of distant hills
Unfold before my very eyes
Beneath the blue autumnal skies?
And my mountain throne commands
Views of jewelled alpine tarns,
While patches of the brilliant snow
Reflect the sunlight's mystic glow.
Not for the joy of aching knees,
Or scrambling over fallen trees.
Not for the joy of carrying packs
That cause so many aching backs.
Not for the beads of perspiration,
But for the pure inspiration
Of living pictures unsurpassed
When one gains the peak, at last.
Anxieties and troubles cease,
For here the world is all at peace.
Massive cliffs of sombre grey
Stretch towards the timeless day.
And beyond suburban reach
I see the golden native beech.
The photograph and artist's paint
Give but a feeble semblance faint
Of the beauty, vast and grand,
Inherent in our glorious land.
I climb the peaks for inspiration
Of God's incredible creation.
A city dweller cannot see
The view that lies in front of me,
As wearily I sit me down
On Acropolis' crown.

Orroroo Community Gym
Discussion on the advantages and the needs of the Orroroo community for
a Community Gym has been taking place over the last 12 months.
Initially the Orroroo Health Promotion Committee discussed the possibility
of setting up a venue for the use of the community for personal and group
exercise regimes with equipment and information available from fitness
leaders, as well as rehabilitation facilities for the use of the physiotherapist.
Availability of a suitable venue within convenient access of most members
of the Orroroo community was our first concern, followed by the ability to
access funding to purchase equipment, and setting up an administrative
structure and insurance cover.
Over the last 12 months we have canvassed support from the Orroroo & District Health Service Board
of Management and the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton, but we realised that we needed to
gather support from within the community for their ideas on such a facility.
On Wednesday 12 April, 2006, a public meeting was arranged at the Commercial Hotel to discuss the
Gym. Sporting and community groups were invited to attend, and an excellent attendance of 19
community members and 22 apologies showed that there was indeed interest in setting up such a
facility in the town.
Gaye Kuerschner, Chairman of the Health Promotion Committee, chaired the public meeting and gave
a brief overview of the project so far. Fiona Dignan then discussed the need for a gym locally. She
noted that it was important that we had a facility that was available for rehabilitation purposes with
the physiotherapist, and the cardiac rehab nurse, for fitness training for sporting groups and facilities
for group and one on one exercise sessions for the whole spectrum of the
community, and activities for the youth and young people in the area.
Funding has been accessed to commence purchasing several pieces of
equipment for a gym, but so far no venue had been located. Because of this
the original Health Promotion Committee had proposed that a temporary
venue be found until a more permanent facility be located and funded.
As a result of the meeting, the suggestion has been proposed that the Town
Hall may be suitable as a venue, and this will need to be taken back to the
Hall Committee, and then the next District Council meeting in May.
A Steering Committee was formed to work towards making this community
facility a reality, and the following people accepted the challenge; Gaye
Kuerschner, Fiona Dignan, Di Barrie, Lorinda Bayley, Amanda Dyer, Louise
Woolford, and two Councillors from the DC Orroroo Carrieton.
We look forward to working with the community to promote a Community
Gym facility.
