Challenge: Extending the Network
Enterprise and Service Provider customers want to leverage
their existing wiring infrastructure to deliver higher
bandwidth intelligent services and media-rich applications
• Rewiring capital outlay is often
prohibitively high
• Time to rewire = Loss of revenue
and productivity
• Rewiring is often not feasible
due to structural limitations and
distance requirements

Requirements:
Deploying a Resilient End-to-End Network
• Easy to install, manage, and maintain
• Leverage a common framework of intelligent Layer
2/3 features and management across distribution
and access points in the network
• Complement existing procurement and support
processes
• Must be scalable to provide a platform for future
applications
Any network over any wiring infrastructure

12
Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP)
•Use a different type of
fiber connector ( LC )
•Can interface with GBIC
(as long as power and
wave length are
respected)

13
Choice of SFP or RJ-45
Each Gigabit interface has 2
physical ports:
•SFP
•10/100/1000 Base T
A Gigabit interface can only use
one physical port at the time ( SFP
or Base T)
GigabitEthernet0/1
GigabitEthernet0/2
The two interfaces are independent, they do not need to use
the same type of physical port (one interface can use the SFP
and the other could use the 10/100/1000 Base T)

Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and
POTS Splitter
Cisco 575 and 585 LRE CPEs
Cisco 48-port POTS Splitter
• Converts LRE to standard Ethernet
• 2 RJ-11 connectors for line input and
telephone
• 575: 1 RJ-45 for 10/100 Ethernet
• 585: 4 RJ-45 for switched 10/100
Ethernet. Supports 802.1p QoS
• Managed remotely from switch
• Enables co-existence of LRE and POTS
on the same wiring
• 48 ports in a 1RU form factor
• Passive device
• Non-homologated
Must use a homologated POTS splitter
if it connects directly with the PSTN.

“LRE will allow us to quickly deploy
local area networks at 1/3 cost of rewiring and deploying traditional
Ethernet Switches, without store
disruption. LRE will save us millions.”
Nordstrom IT Department
“We saved $1,100 to $1,600 per unit in
rewiring expenses for our student
apartments. And unlike rewiring, we
can install the equipment
incrementally as customers request
the service.”
Jon Snyder, Portland State
