VOL 2 ISSUE 1 JUNE 2014 W W W. S H A R E S A N E L I J O.C O M 1 YEAR ONE YEAR BEFORE, MANY YEARS AGO, MANY YEARS TO COME By: Karishma Sinnott, Community Editor June is an exciting month for us at SHARE San Elijo, not just because of the promise of summer, but because it’s SHARE’s first anniversary this month! We cannot believe that our publication has been part of your lives for a whole year now, and we are always grateful and honored to be part of your home each month. One year equals 12 issues, countless hours of writing and interviews for me, organizing and amalgamating for Karen, and then there’s Amy, who takes our Word documents and file of photos and weaves her magic into them to make the paper what it is every month. We started with our Father’s Day issue, with the Pitcairns on the cover, and we thought it was our favorite one. The November issue struck a chord in all three of us, it was “the one to beat”. But then Amy finished the December issue, with the gorgeous ballerinas and Nutcracker shimmering and practically dancing off the page, and we were certain it was the best paper we had produced to date. And on and on it goes. Every month, Karen, Amy and I try hard to bring you the best, most positive parts of San Elijo Hills. This isn’t hard to do; our community is one that is filled with incredible people who do wonderful things every month, and make our jobs rather simple by sharing their stories with us. We often marvel that we get to witness the kind, wonderful, beautiful events that happen in San Elijo, which makes coming to work each day a real pleasure. IN THIS ISSUE A Trip Down Memory Lane Adopt A Pet Great American Deals As Karen, Amy and I sat down to ponder what this anniversary issue would be about, it seemed all too clear. We wanted to take a walk down memory lane and do an article about San Elijo: Past, Present and Future. Will you take a walk with us? Continued on page 7 Naya is the Gornall Family Dog who just needed to cool off in the fountain back in 2002 (Don't tell anyone!) CAN YOU BELIEVE unsung heroes of our neighborhood who fly under the radar of appreciation and IT IS THE MONTH OF JUNE ALREADY? I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE THAT HALF A gratitude every day. There are our crossing guards who keep the children safe, THE SPECIAL MEN IN OUR LIVES YEAR IS OVER; TIME REALLY DOES SEEM TO MOVE AT BREAK NECK SPEED. our unbelievable group of custodial staff who do so much more than clean our school. Of course, we have our tireless PTO parents who work all year long to June is a fabulous month in so many ways, not just because of the start of support the children. We do a decent job of thanking our staff at the Elementary summer, but because we celebrate our wonderful fathers this month. As I said School, but without a planned “Teacher Appreciation Week” at the Middle and last month, we ought to appreciate each other all year long, but, as long as we High Schools, do we do enough to thank our teachers and staff at those two have this special day in June, we should really acknowledge the men in our lives. schools for all their hard work and dedication? Fathers, husbands, uncles, grandfathers, step-fathers — they are so So this June could be the start of many months of appreciation and gratitude. special, and our lives would be incomplete without them. Sadly, I have This could be for our children who are mostly well-behaved, kind, thoughtful, lost both my grandfathers and father, and not a day goes by without me respectful and diligent, and for our parents, who always mean well and love us remembering them all. As time goes by, I find that I understand my father dearly even when we disagree with them. It’s the time to thank our friends for and grandfathers more. I don’t really think I did when they were alive, being sounding boards and listening ears even if we don’t always see eye to eye which is sad, isn’t it? on all things. It’s the month to hug the men in your lives — husbands, fathers, Why is it that as human beings, we tend to appreciate people and situations more when we don’t have them anymore? I had this conversation with my sister-in-law just a few days ago. She recently lost her maternal grandmother, and this event unleashed a set of reactions in her - mostly guilt - because she felt like she wasn’t there for her mother during her grieving process. uncles, brothers and grandfathers — and thank them for their unconditional support and love. Maybe it’s the thought of summer that is making me so cheerful, and perhaps the cheer will break the dam of happiness, gratitude and appreciation that we have held gently closed for so long? To all the men out there who go to work at jobs they may or may not While we were chatting, I told her that there is still time for her - her mother is despise, who come back home with a smile on their faces, ready to alive and well, and lives close by. It’s easy to take your parents (friends, spouses, give piggyback rides, do Math homework, coach soccer teams, help siblings) for granted when they live close by because you know that they are with dishes and baths, only to repeat the same routine the next day, always there. But, as we have seen in our own neighborhood so much this year, week, and month — we wish you the happiest Father’s Day ever! life is precious and fleeting, and we lose loved ones without any warning or notice We hope you are spoiled silly, not just today, but every day this year. at all. This should be lesson enough that we ought to appreciate those we love every single day of our lives. While my sister-in-law and I were talking, I told her that while my mother-in-law’s Karishma Sinnott, Community Editor body was being overtaken by the cancer that she had fought so valiantly, the [email protected] doctors told us that this was the time to sit down and talk to her about anything that we had yet to say. It was a time to say good-bye, thank you, or to make confessions and apologies. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to Editor’s Note say these final farewells to both my father and my mother-in-law, and yet, I didn’t This issue of SHARE would not be complete without our undying gratitude have too much to say. I wanted to thank them both for all they had done for me towards our first responders, firefighters, police officers, City officials and men and women in uniform who worked so tirelessly to keep us safe during throughout my time with them, but there were no stones unturned that I felt the the fires that wreaked havoc in San Diego County in May. Our gratitude knows need to turn over. I have tried to live my life in such a way that I resolve any resentment that I may feel towards any of the people I hold close to my heart. I can’t say that I have done this very successfully with everyone, but I do try. Why is it so hard to say thank you to someone while they are alive? I have found that it is easier for me to write an email or send a text message, but not nearly as simple to say the words out loud. I don’t know why this is, it’s something I need to work on. A friend of mine told me last year that he decided to write a letter every day to a person in his life that had touched him at one point or another. I thought this was a wonderful idea, and may be one that we can spread around our neighborhood? no bounds, our appreciation is sincere and we are eternally thankful for your tireless hard work and effort. All of us sitting under the mosaic, SOARing. It was magical! I think we had 750 students that day. How it's grown! I remember watching our staff In the years before 2007, the only way to get in and out of San Elijo Hills was through commit to our core beliefs, challenge themselves daily to reach each student and Rancho Santa Fe Road, until the city extended Twin Oaks Valley Road to the south, and learning from one another. I remember the day Mrs. Kalicki told me she'd the developer of San Elijo stretched it to the east. And on September 6, 2007, Twin Oaks decided to become an administrator! That was a pivotal moment. BREAKING GROUND For parents everywhere, the opening of our schools was a life-changing event as well. In August of 2006, San Elijo Elementary School opened its doors for the first time. In June of 2012, the very first class of kindergartners graduated from fifth grade at SEES to attend San Elijo Middle School. After they left, SEES opened its gorgeous new building because enrollment had grown from 750 children in 2006 to the over 1300 students that we have today. We had the pleasure of speaking with Lynda McDonell, who was our Principal at the Elementary School even before the doors to the school had officially opened in 2006. She took a walk down memory lane with me, and this is how she recalls life in San Elijo in the year 2006. Tiffany Lena looks back… Leigh Conlee ‘02 We moved into Sagewood in March of 2001. I was pregnant with my second son, Joey. There were three other ladies on my street who were also pregnant; one gave birth in June, the other three, including me, in August. Deb Straight was one of them and she still lives in SEH in Westcliffe. We lived with the sounds of jackhammers and the food truck drivers were on a first name basis with the construction workers. We did not have a park or anywhere really to go so we had baby playdates at each other’s houses. The trail system was very limited and I remember pushing a doublestroller up a very steep and rocky hill to get to “the tower.” I was a lot younger then! I also remember the first Oktoberfest. It was held in the building that now houses ” Entering Sagewood “Stoked.” Yes, IN the building, not the parking lot. There was great gourmet German food and all kinds of bottled beer. There were probably 50-100 people altogether. Gornall Family Tom and Gina Poure of Acacia (still there) were at the event. I also remember a tiny little San Elijo pumpkin patch that was arranged for the residents that year. ‘02 There were a lot more deer then, I used to see them all the time in the canyon below our house. I like what SEH has become now, but the rural feeling that was there in the beginning is gone and I do miss that. Schaumann Family ‘02 Before SEMS was built. Look at the open space behind Calistoga, when SEMS was just a dirt lot. Luhmann Family ‘02 Remember the stork? Jack Schaumann was born in March of 2002, and he was the first baby to be announced by the stork. Here is a photograph of Emily, Peter and Jack Schaumann in March of 2002. The stork made its way around the neighborhood, announcing births of babies in San Elijo. For a while, it seemed like San Elijo was always a bustle of building, noisy jackhammers, loud cement trucks and plenty of unwanted dust and debris. Now, some of that dust has settled, physically and metaphorically, as San Elijo Hills enters what feels like the equivalent of human middle age. As a community, we are somewhat settled, we seem to know generally the direction in which we are heading, we are comfortable in our own skin and determined to be the best that we possibly can. We aren’t done yet, though. There is still new construction going on, with the new neighborhood of Sanctuary opening to the public as we speak. Did you know, all the homes in The Estates have been sold and a little community is already forming “up the hill” there? And, there are more homes in The Estates waiting to be built, we will share that information with you it becomes available. This next year in San Elijo marks a major development in our community - that of another new school. As Mrs. McDonell told us, San Elijo Elementary started with 750 children, and is now home to over 1300. With all the congestion that our school has managed, the new K-8 will be a welcome addition to our community. The changing of boundaries was an unpleasant thought for some, but as we learn about the new, as yet unnamed, K-8 school, it seems fairly clear that the children who attend the new school will be lucky and blessed to call it home away from home. We thank Randy Walton and the School Board for sharing these photographs with us, and eagerly await the noise, hustle and bustle that this year will see as the school is built in time for Fall of 2015. We already know that Steve Baum, Principal of Twin Oaks Valley School will be taking over as Principal of the new K-8. Charlie McGhee, band director at San Elijo Middle, will join the new campus as well, making it so that all the elementary school children as well as middle schoolers will have access to a fabulous Band program. All in all, it seems as if life in San Elijo continues to move at its usual speed - we are still building, expanding and adding on to our wonderful community. Friends leave, new neighbors join our extended family, children become young adults and leave for college, babies are born daily… Change happens, but for the most part, life is happy and busy and blessed here in San Elijo Hills. Our thanks to Randy Walton for the renderings of the new K-8 school. With new neighbors, new schools, cafes, restaurants and local businesses. the smaller age and generation gap, they know that they will connect with their younger counterparts in a way that will make learning fun, age appropriate, and infinitely less dry than when it often is when taught by your stereotypical college professor. By segregating their students by age and gender, they hope to keep the learning environment a positive, friendly and collaborative one, because, contrary to popular belief, programming does not have to be a solitary hobby or profession. In fact, the collaboration between great minds is what makes innovative ideas a reality. Alex and Sergiy want the children who enroll in their program to know that programming is not just a lucrative future, but it is one that can be exciting and enthralling once you have learned and absorbed the rudimentary concepts and challenges. The ultimate goal is to have the SPHYNX program continue until Sergiy and Alex graduate from high school, and perhaps even when they are at college. But if college takes them outside the San Diego area, they hope to take their current students and mentor them into becoming future teachers, passing on the baton, and keeping the interest in Computer Programming Alexander Katson at Oktoberfest in San Elijo, October 2002. at the forefront in the minds of middle schoolers. We asked Alex and Sergiy how they balance their hefty load at school, all their AP But as we look to the years ahead in our community, it’s fairly easy to see that the future classes, track and field training and competitions, along with their “on-the-side” lies not in the development of buildings and structures, but rather in the investment in programming classes, homework, social obligations and family lives. It isn’t easy, our children, the ultimate future of San Elijo Hills. they told us, and sleep is always scarce. A perfect day in Alex’s life would include continuous hours of shut-eye, along with the precious commodity of free time, Alexander Katson’s family has lived in San Elijo Hills for over thirteen years now. In fact, they were the first family to place a deposit on a home in the Sagewood neighborhood in 2001. It is fitting then, that our article about the future of San Elijo comes full circle to revolve around Alex and his friend, Sergiy Chemodanov, two San Marcos High School students who are taking on an exciting endeavor this summer, and one that we are thrilled to share with you. Welcome to the world of SPHYNX, the brainchild of Alex and Sergiy. This Summer Computer Programming Academy is aimed at motivated, interested, inspired middle school students who want to learn how to program in Python and Visual Basic, with additional courses in C, C++, Java and other languages, which will be which seems to elude him and Sergiy on most days. A day of mountain-biking, a fantastic movie, a leisurely run at a slow pace, and the time to do some “pointless programming for fun” would be part of an ideal day for Sergiy. That perfect day is perhaps around the corner for them. But until then, they will continue to excel at school and their extracurricular activities, working on getting SPHYNX ready to launch this summer, with dreams of inspiring the generation behind them into fostering the same love of Computer Programming that they share. John Carmack once said, “Programming is not a zero-sum game. Teaching something to a fellow programmer doesn’t take it away from you. I’m happy to share what I can, because I’m in it for the love of programming.” offered as and when necessary or requested. The SPHYNX classes will begin within a week of the end of the school year, and then run for ten weeks (2 hours a day, once a week). The 10-week class is an introductory one, taught at a normal pace and aimed at fifth to graduating eighth graders. An Accelerated, five-week class is also in the works, and upon completion of this, students can enroll in language-specific courses. Regardless of what you choose for your child, the average size of the class will not exceed eight students, with the student to teacher ratio remaining at around 3:1. The idea for this academy materialized from the frustrations that Alex and Sergiy have faced as they have tried to expand their own knowledge in the world of computer programming. In addition to their regular course load and AP classes at SMHS, Alex and Sergiy have taken their education into their own hands and enrolled in classes at Palomar College, as well as online courses through Google University and the distancelearning programs offered through MIT. In addition to these honors, Sergiy has been named a Simon Scholar at San Marcos High School, winning a prestigious scholarship offered to only the most promising students who have the desire to advance and succeed.
