FIRST SAILORS ILK DENIZCILER
Not much is known today about ancient seamanship and its
traditions. Who were the first sailors? What kind of boats did
they have and how did they navigate? How did they find
their way and which routes did they use? FIRST SAILORS
consists of three 26 minute episodes where many topics
about seamanship is discussed. The first episode is named
“Uluburun”, the second episode is “From Phokai to
Marseilles”, and the third episode is “Cyclades Boats”.
Every episode will look for answers on seamanship topics of
a different era. On this aspect, the topic “ancient
seamanship” will be discussed extendedly. The
documentary tells the story of making archeological
excavations of underwater wrecks and displaying the
findings in the Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum,
and, inspired from this exhibition, the story of a group of
archeologists who built ancient boats according to their
originals and navigating with them. The first episode tells
the reconstruction and the ancient route adventures of
ULUBURUN shipwreck which is similar to ancient
shipwrecks and was reconstructed with experimental
archeology methods.
Produced by
The topic of the second episode is the sailors who were able
to flee from Anatolia because of the Persian invasion. This
event took place in 600 B.C. and is reanimated by today’s
archeologists. The rebuilt ancient boat is named after the
Mother Goddess Kybele and the archeologists use Kybele to
navigate to Marseilles from Phokai using the route which
was used in ancient times.

The third episode tells the story of sea people living in the
CYCLADES ARCHIPELAGO in the Aegean Sea, the Cyclades
Boats which were built with a stitching technique, and their
cultural and political relationships with ancient cities on
Anatolian coasts.

MASTER OF INSCRIPTION YAZININ EFENDISI
Master of inscription, in other words, pen…Although it
is not a common sight these days, it still holds a special
place in the hearts of those who follow the path of
calligraphy. Against the deceitful allure of the ballpen,
and the attractive speed and ease of use of the
computer, pen still preserves its standing as an
indicator of prestige!... Even against the lazy hands that
avoid writing, the pen continues to sustain and increase
its importance thanks to those who still cherish its value.
The documentary “Master of Inscription” tells the story
and the passion of the pen from the view of the poetwriter Sunay Akın, writer Buket Uzuner, writer-architect
Aydın Boysan, artists Nezih Danyal and Izel Rozental,
journalist Doğan Hızlan, academicians Prof.Dr.Kadir
Cangızbay and Prof.Dr.Nazife Güngör along with
collectors, stationers and even its repairman. The
program shows that although its name resembles a
close relation to pencil, pen carries much deeper
meanings than simply being a tool of inscription.

SLIPSTREAM DUMEN SUYU
A brand new and assertive documentary on TRT Tourism
and Documentary Channel. Two captains in one ship:
Dominic and Hasan Baba. A captain who took his
license just recently. His guide is a fisherman. They set
sail together on a sailboat. Dominic is a 30-35 years old
English man. He has been living in Turkey for years and
he is a tradesman. He is also a traveler. He has been to
many places of the world. He wrote down his travels,
and his writings were published. He is a lover of the sea.
To him, the sea means infinity, the nature itself, peace
and freedom.
For many years, he has taken pictures of the sea while
he was traveling along all the shores on land. Now, he
wants to see the places he’s been to from the sea.
He made his mind. He went to the course and got his
certificate. He is buying his dream boat. Now it’s time to
sail. Hasan Baba is 60 years old. He is a fisherman in
Sığacık. Life for him is the sea. He lives in his boat. For
him, fishing is only a means of income, to satisfy his
needs. All the excitement in his life is being on sea. He
has been through a lot on the sea. Dominic and Hasan
Baba came together on Dominic’s boat. On his first
boating experience, Dominic wanted Hasan Baba who
is a local fisherman to be his guide. In this documentary,
we will see the thrill of a journey together, the way of
seamanship, things seen from coasts, how they dance to
each others tunes, their amateur and expert actions
from their eyes. We will be their shipmates. The
audience will be the confidants for both of them as a

THE CITY AND THE SAGE SEHIR VE BILGE
The thirteenth and twentieth centuries are two distinct
centuries of the last millennium that have greatly
influenced human history - centuries of wars, famines
and shifting geographies. Alongside all these
abominations, they are also distinguished by the
scientists and sages they contributed to human history.
Jalal ad-Din Rumi is one such sage, a Sufi raised in the
thirteenth century, whose importance cannot be
disputed from his century to our own. However, those
who have told us about him since the days he was alive
have all related their own versions of Rumi. The sage,
who put his entire thought and identity on full display in
Fih-i Ma Fih and Majalis al-Saba, has come down to us
in terms of analyses of the images in his poems. He has
been described only in terms of what he produced in the
last decade of his 66-year lifespan. Scarcely any
mention has been made of the land he was born in, his
family or its roots. In this work, our goal has been to seek
out the roots from which Rumi drew nourishment.

THE LANGUAGE OF THE TATTOO DOVMENIN DILI
“The Language of the Tattoo” tries to look at the codes
which history, belief and tradition draw on bodies, and
to understand and document the language of fading
symbols. On the other hand, it looks at what kind of
marks these old lines leave on young bodies. Tattoo is
the painting on body which has been drawn since past
times. Its origin is a tacit communication language, a
form of art which is buried deep in history.
Sign is older than letter and in the archaic language of
tattoo, meanings of symbols are read. The tradition of
tattoo carries the signs of beliefs and culture lived
thousands of years ago. It is a deep mark left on human
body by pain, fear, joy and hope, but mostly desire.
These lines that reach today from thousands of years
ago, still speak the language of tales, myths and
legends in Anatolia, especially in Mesopotamia, in Urfa,
Viranşehir and Mardin for instance. While the marks of
old times on old bodies are being erased quietly, new
marks, new paintings appear on younger bodies.

Do these new signs, which appear to be strangers to the
history of these lands, create a new language that turns
its face to the West? In the sense of their equivalences in
life and the meanings they bear, do the traditional lines
of sacred, belief, and desire and the rough and colorful
paintings that resemble the chaos of modern life
separate or join together?
THE LANGUAGE OF THE TATTOO seeks answers to all of
these questions.

Every living creature indispensably exists in this world.
But expressing his existence to future generations is

We work, we produce and we leave our works to the

Such is woodwork, the work of Anatolian people from

Wood is a cradle to their children, a coffin to their dead

WOODEN MOSQUES FROM YESTERDAY TO TODAY is the
story of an adventure. It comprises wooden mosques
which were built with a traditional building technique
called “Çantı”, similar to the dovetail technique,
starting during the period of the Turkish principalities,

ETHNO-RHYTHM ETNO RITIM
What does the traditional music tell us besides
presenting anthropologic data on a time where the soul
of the epoch (Zeitgeist) is alienated? What does the
traditional music, that is the deepest voice of cultures,
mean for us?
In fact, like anything else, music is not independent
from your story. Every nation would like to show that its
voice is worthy of being heard.
Ethno-Rhythm gives the opportunity to see that the
history of traditional music and that of nations follow
parallel roads.
Ethno-Rhythm suggests you cultural and historical
readings through a “local”, “Turkish” point of view by
showing the similarities between the cultures and the
traditional music of different countries.

TIME FOR JUDAS TREES IN ISTANBUL
28x30'
documentary
58
ISTANBUL ICIN ERGUVAN VAKTI
The Judas Tree is the tree of the Bosporus. Actually, it grows
in various parts of Anatolia, but it is highly associated with
the panorama, the culture and arts in Istanbul. When the
Judas Trees blossom in spring, the reunion of the blueness of
the sea with the deep-pink color in the Bosporus turns into a
visual festivity. The documentary displays this natural
wonder of Istanbul. Bilsen Gürer, who has spent her
childhood under Judas Trees, tells the Istanbul of her
memories. Artist Yilmaz Enes, who has been trying to apply
Judas Trees in the art of marbling, describes it as a “tree that
comes to life after overcoming many difficulties.” Dürdane
Ünver, a master of the art of paper cutting, shows us how the
riot of colors in the Bosporus are reflected in her work.
Historian Salim Aydin goes back in time to the relationship
between Istanbul and the Judas Tree. Painter Betül Aydiner
Chacko shares the tradition of “Judas Tree sighting in the
Bosporus” and the idea of “seeing the beauty” in her art
with the audience. Railroader and curator Ruhan Çelebi
tells about her first encounter with the Judas Tree and how it
became a part of her life. Botanist Prof. Asuman Efe
emphasizes the place of Judas Trees in the rich natural
diversity of Anatolia and Istanbul. Miniature artist and
social anthropologist Gülgün Anmaç highlighted the idea of
“the ancient Judas Tree of the ancient city of Istanbul” and
how well the Judas Tree suited the classical art of miniature.
Hüseyin Emiroglu, the spokesperson of the Judas Tree
Association of Istanbul invites everyone to Istanbul during
the Judas Tree season, accompanied by paintings of Ahmet
Yakuboglu and Süheyl Ünver. In literature, the Judas Tree
has mostly been depicted in the poems of Hilmi Yavuz.
Vedat Sakman on the other hand, has made a song for this

KATIP CELEBI KATIP CELEBI
As is known, the year 2009 was the Katip Çelebi Year. TRT
puts this important scientist, whose 400th birthday had

of the most amazing names of the 17th century”. Their
common point is, that he was a scientist way beyond his

Katip Çelebi highly deserves all attention not only due to his
universal approach to knowledge, but also his intellectual
personality and the responsibility he felt in suggesting
solutions to the problems of his time are well worth
mentioning.
This documentary searches why Katip Çelebi, whose book
named Kash al-zunun is among the most referred books in
the international scientific world, is still being examined

furthermore wrote numerous books in numerous fields,

lands to bazaars, from the festival rushes within narrow
yards to the colors of Hidirellez, the spring fest, which
surrounds mountains and hills.
Although clocks show the same minute, time flows

SECRET OF THE MASTER, THE USTANIN SIRRI
The Secret Of The Master reflects the world of the old
masters of Grand Bazaar. Located in Istanbul, the Grand
Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the world
and it gives shelter to a 500 years old tradition of Turkish
jewellery. We experience this design tradition with respect
to the creation of a ring called “Divanhane Çivisi” (Nail of
the Palace Parlor), which is one of the traditional jewelleries
of the Ottomans.
Actually, what the masters produce is not a merely precious
ring. It is just a new piece of work produced as the outcome
of a very old system of work created by the joint efforts of
experienced masters of the Grand Bazaar. In order to have
others like something, they first have to like it themselves.
The essence of this secret based on patience and
confidenceis linked with the power of the tradition enjoyed.
It is quite interesting to see how the world’s most delicate
jewellery and novelties have been kept to go on for
centuries by using only such simple tools and technology.
What is the secret of the masters in keeping that tradition
continue? In search of the answer to these questions, we’ll
witness how the masters devoted their lives and hearts to
this craft, and how they transferred their feelings, hopes
and desires to that new piece of work they handled.

This documentary tells the 400 years old fairy tale of the
historical seaside mansions on the Bosphorus. There
were once 2000 of such mansions, but now there are

These wooden mansions on the shore present the best
examples of Ottoman civil architecture. Despite their
simple exterior designs, and the lavishness in their
interior decoration and ornamentation, these mansions
have a very special place in the world civil architecture.
However they also attract attention with what has
happened within these edifices. These seaside
mansions, built during the 18th and the 19th centuries,
a period in which luxury and debauchery in the
Ottoman Empire reached its peak, are also interesting,
because of the posh lifestyle of the inhabitants and
moonlight parties held on the Bosphorus. And
sometimes they had become a venue where treaties had

The Ottoman Empire after being collapsed was
replaced by the young Turkish Republic. The last
articles of the Treaty of Lausanne signed on July
24,1923, delineated Turkey’s present borders.
On March 3,1924, The Turkish Grand National Assembly
passed a law, putting an end to the caliphate, thus to the
last tie between the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish
Republic. Under this law, the caliphate was abolished
and Sultan Abdulmecid and his family exiled. There
were 36 men, 48 women and 60 children, a total of 144
people, i.e., 144 members of the Ottoman dynasty. Each
person had been given 1000 British Sterling and a
passport valid through one year. There was a notation
on each passport which said that it could only be used
for exit from the country of issuance.

STORY OF TURKISH COFFEE, THE TURK KAHVESI
It started its journey from Ethiopia, passed over mountains,
lands and seas and reached Anatolia. The coffee is an
indispensable element of chats and gives pleasure to the
taster. With its style of brewing, serving and the drinking
ceremony, it has become a significant part of the Turkish
culture, apart from being a beverage. That’s why the story
of coffee somehow is the story of Turkish coffee. While the
coffee evokes complicated and contradictory concepts such
as mystery, love, peace, nostalgia and respect, it yet takes
its place among the indispensables of many people.
This documentary is about the story of Turkish coffee, which
is one of the cultural elements introducing Turkish culture to
the world. Harboring many traditions, starting from its tiny
beans to the moment it is poured into the cups, the Turkish
coffee captivates us with its pleasant aroma well before it is
served.
This dramatic documentary examines the Turkish coffee
closely and narrates it in a unique and fabulous language.
The annals of coffee, from its discovery until today, and how
the Ottomans got acquainted with it, the rise of the
phenomenon of "Turkish coffee" and its social impacts, the
characteristics of the Turkish coffee, the first acquaintance
of Europe with Turkish coffee, its place and importance in
our customs and traditions and the rise of coffeehouses are
all investigated with an aim to start a journey to reveal the
historical adventures of coffee, as accompanied by
photographs, graphical figures and documents.
