Arrive at school early to survey lesson plans, locate materials, review fire and earthquake instructions, and meet a few teachers. 2. Look over the seating chart and zero in on a few names so that you can establish a rapport immediately. 3. Ask questions – regular staff members will be glad to help. 4. Be confident, concise and firm. Your first words and actions go a long way toward setting the tone of the day. 5. Follow the regular teacher’s lesson plans and discipline system to the best of your ability. 6. Speak softly and wait until all the students are listening before giving instructions. 7. Deal with the individual, not the group, when discipline problems occur. Be firm and stay in control of the situation. Request help if needed. 8. Have your own simple discipline and reward system in case you can’t figure out the classroom’s behavior management system. 9. Avoid commanding and threatening. Solicit cooperation. You are on the same team. 10. Compliment the students on class displays, behavior, enthusiasm, etc. 11. Circulate as students are working. Make positive comments and/or put various colored pluses on their papers (i.e. green for a proper heading, red for working quietly, and blue for having solved a problem correctly). 12. Listen to the students and be observant. 13. Allow students to help you with daily routines – involve the students. When appropriate, help students check their own work. 14. Bail out of a lesson that is failing. Move on to something you are comfortable with or review. 15. Have a story, game or other activity prepared in case you finish lessons early. 10/23/2009 1 16. Have generic lessons that can be used at a variety of grade levels just in case a blank spot occurs. 17. Avoid assigning “busy work.” 18. Never leave the class unattended. 19. Grade papers that can easily be checked. 20. Do not dismiss students early. 21. Dismiss students in an orderly fashion, one group at a time. 22. Be respectful of classroom equipment and supplies. Put pencils, paper, books, etc. away neatly. 23. Leave the room in order. Have the students pickup papers, straighten desks, etc. 24. Lock the door when you leave the room. 25. Leave a note for the teacher. Include positive experiences, a progress report, list of absent students, and names of cooperative, as well as, uncooperative students. 10/23/2009 2 KERN COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS DISTRICT SUBSTITUTE RATES 2014-2015 ELEMENTARY DISTRICTS: District ID# District Name: 01 Arvin Union 04 Bakersfield City 06 Beardsley 08 Belridge 09 Blake 12 Buttonwillow Union Daily/Hourly Rate: $120/day $100/day (K-6); $120/day (Middle/Jr. High) $100/day $130/day $120/day $100/day Long Term Rate: $150/day $160.00/day $217.73 $150/day $120.00 $180.00 Long Term After: More than 20 days 20th consec day one classroom After 20 days After 15 + days More than two weeks Following 20 consecutive days N/A $150/day N/A 6th consec day same class Year (1) Column (1) on Salary Schedule $115/day $160/day 20 Consec days After 15 days 20 + Consecutive days $125/day 21st consecutive day $160/day $120 $168/day $125/day $150/day $234.90/day N/A $194.10/day $200.00 $253.36 $160/day $178.03/day 20 Consective Days same teacher After 30th Consecutive Day 16 days or more After 20 days 20 + consecutive days 30+ days N/A After 20th consec day same classroom After 15 days 26th consecutive day same teacher Undetermined 20 13 Caliente Union 16 Delano $125 (living outside zip) $100 (living within zip) $125/day, $135 rate increases after 51 work days per school year 18 20 22 Di Giorgio Edison Elk Hills $100 or 120.00 after 15 days $100/day $110/day 25 Fairfax 27 29 32 38 40 41 43 44 46 50 52 54 Fruitvale General Shafter Greenfield Union Kernville Union Lakeside Union Lamont Linns Valley-Poso Flat Union Lost Hills Union Maple McKittrick Midway Norris $85/day $100/day $90/day Elem; $95 Middle School $100/day $85/day $110/day (K-6); $120 (7-8) $100/day $120/day $100/day $140/day $110/day $86/day 56 58 Panama-Buena Vista Union Pond $90/day Elem; $95 JH and SPED $120/day (days 1-19) 62 Richland $110/day 1-1 Range of cert salary Over 10 consecutive days 34th day placed on Salary Schedule 21st day in same classroom 41st day in same classroom $100/day $85/day $125/day $100/day $100/day $130/day $105/day $125/day Step 1 Column 1 $213.00/day $211.21/day $135.00 $125/day $160/day $160/day $140/day $226.90/day 20th consec day same classroom 21st day Over 30 days 21st consec day same assignment 31st consec day same classroom 21 consec day in teaching position 20 consec days same classroom 20th consecutive day 64 Rio Bravo-Greeley Union 66 Rosedale Union 68 Semitropic 72 South Fork Union 73 Standard 74 Taft City 75 Vineland 77 Wasco Union HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICTS: 81 Delano Joint Union $90/day - Daily Subs are eligible for a 300.00 bonus for every 30 days worked in one school year within the Fairfax School District (this offer does not apply to long term subs). $140 (days 20 thru 33) $130 76 Taft Union 85 Wasco Union UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTS: $30/hour (per class period) $125/day $135/day $210 (5 periods) $252 (6 periods) Paid per period.
