Barnett Wood Lane - Leonard Cheshire Disability
Barnett Wood Lane
Barnett Wood Lane is a home providing 24-hour care and support
for adults with learning disabilities.
The home is a detached Victorian property in Ashtead, Surrey. Ashtead is a pleasant village, offering various amenities including shops, restaurants and recreation
grounds.
Our fully-trained staff are committed to ensuring that everyone at Barnett Wood
Lane is happy in their home.
We always put our residents first and support them to be independent and to take
part in community activities as they wish.
“I leave my home and come to work at Barnett
Wood Lane, my second home with a very friendly
atmosphere. Come and visit and see for yourself.”

Accommodation
The home has six individual bedrooms, two of which have en suite facilities. There
is one bedroom downstairs, which has a wet room with grab rails.
Rooms
The bedrooms are generous in size and the home is
carpeted throughout.
We support and encourage all residents to paint and
decorate their own rooms and we can support you to
choose furniture. You are very welcome to bring your
own furniture and other items if you wish.
As a resident, you will have your own bedroom key. Our staff and other residents
will not be allowed to enter your room without your permission. A lockable cupboard
is also available for you to keep private and personal things safe.
Our home has an ongoing maintenance programme for decoration and soft furnishing and we will always talk to you about any changes to your room.
Dining
We think mealtimes are really important. We make sure they are enjoyable for everyone, and flexible too. At breakfast time, you can help yourself as you get up
(support is available if you want it). Tea, coffee and other refreshments are available
throughout the day.
Cooking is done by the residents with support from our staff as required. At the
weekend we all choose the meals together.
Vegetarian and special dietary requirements are catered for.
Currently all residents have different day placements and activities so the main meal
is usually served in the evening.
Residents can choose and prepare their own packed lunches for when they are
away from Barnett Wood Lane.

Other dining options include:
 Eating out (staff can arrange this with advance notice).
 Meals enjoyed in the comfort of your own room.
 Meals can be provided for family and friends who are visiting (with your permission as a resident).
There is the option to order take away meals of your choice.
We have a large back garden with a BBQ area which we use regularly during the
summer months, inviting family and friends to join in if they wish. We also have a
garden table and chairs for having meals outside when the weather permits.
Activities
There are two day centres close by (in Ewell and Banstead), and you can attend
these if you wish. A dementia specific day centre is also available. The day centre
sessions start at 9.30am and finish at either lunchtime or at 3pm, depending on the
day.
You can be involved if you wish in different activities. Our
residents share their interests with us, and we try to make
sure there is something for everyone. We have a summer
garden project at the home in which the residents decide
what flowers, bedding plants and vegetables to grow each
year. You can get involved if you like and try your hand at
digging, weeding, planting, preparing and watering.
Two residents deliver the local newspaper in the village for which they receive a
monthly payment. If you wish to earn money, you may be able to join other residents working on an extra paper round delivery.
Some residents are members of the local working man’s club and Royal British Legion where you can enjoy a few games of pool or darts along with a couple of social
drinks with friends. You can also become a member of the local library.
The local college runs a life skills course once a week. Another option is Riding for
the Disabled, which offers the chance to learn all sorts of skills on horseback.
Other activities include the gym, an entertainment group and Scouts club. Residents
are also supported to go bowling and visit the cinema. We hold fundraising events in
the home including curry evenings, tea/coffee mornings and raffles.

We have an activity room which we use as a quiet area for people to spend time
alone or to entertain friends and families. It is a relatively large room with music centre, organ, dart board and various table top games along with art and craft equipment for everyone to use.
Everybody at Barnett Wood Lane is very involved in the community and we hold
events at our home such as discos, Christmas parties, BBQs, and magic shows.
Family and friends are always welcome.

Local amenities
Ashtead is a large village in north-east Surrey, lying between Leatherhead and Epsom. Locals commonly refer to three areas of Ashtead: The Village, Lower Ashtead,
and The Common. The Common is an ancient wooded area (covering 500 acres),
which is part of the Epsom and Ashtead Site of Scientific Interest.
The Common is noted for its rich community of breeding birds and rare
invertebrates. Ashtead is two miles from Epsom, famous for horse racing - especially The Derby. It is two miles from junction 9 of the M25.
Ashtead has a small modern railway station with direct services to London Waterloo,
London Victoria, and London Bridge.

We can offer you support in arranging your holiday and we can collect holiday
brochures, and show you holiday options on the internet. Once you’ve decided on a
holiday, staff can support you to book and pay, and to go shopping and do your
packing. You can also pay an additional fee if you would like us to support you
whilst on holiday.

Our service manager is a trained nurse and in addition, six other staff (out of eight in
