The Christian faith calls us to travel together AT an event I attended a few days ago one of the speakers quoted an old African proverb. “If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together”. It wasn’t a church event and the speaker wasn’t talking about faith issues, but it occurred to me that what he was saying relates well to the present journey of the Barnsley Methodist Circuit. Earlier this year our Circuit Meeting agreed that we should move towards a more shared approach to our ministry, with ministers working closely together and our church congregations working together in mission and ministry. Although we are in the very early days of our year of transition there have already been some very positive signs of how we might be changed and even more effective in what we do as church if we work together. In my previous appointment I was privileged to serve in an ecumenical church with a single congregation. In the early days this church was trailblazing ways in which denominations can work together to be the church in a community. We were a congregation of Anglicans, Baptists, United Reformed and Methodists – a single congregation initially, with a team of ministers, and then since 2002 with a single minister. A great deal of energy was generated and absorbed in working out the detail of how we related denominationally and most of us realised that the easier part of what we did was the worship. However, one of our most significant discoveries was that by being a single ecumenical congregation and representing the four major denominations in the town we didn’t engage with other congregations. The challenges and opportunities of working together in the local community were not part of our normal pattern of life. We decided to be more pro-active in working with other congregations, placing our energy into working together, and over time we began to see change in ourselves and more opportunities for engaging as Christians in the wider community. Today that single ecumenical congregation continues to be the church in the town centre but now has a wider ministry alongside other Christians because of a conscious decision to work together with other churches. From the outset of his ministry Jesus called people to work with him in his mission. Initially it was the group often referred to as the apostles, but we know that, in fact, the group was much larger than that, and those left behind after Jesus returned to glory gathered together for worship, fellowship and prayer, discerning at each step the call of God in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus sent the disciples out in pairs to visit towns and villages with his message and slowly the message spread through people like Paul, Barnabas and others, who travelled long distances to make sure the Good News of Jesus was heard. What we read in the new testament is that they travelled together and new followers of Jesus were encouraged to become part of the church by sharing fellowship with other Christians. The calling of the Christian faith is not to journey alone; it is to travel with others to fulfil the calling of God - and it is this that we are seeking to do in the life of our Circuit. As Christians don’t travel alone, neither should the individual churches (that is one of the reasons we are grouped as a Circuit) and our plan for the future is that we should intentionally work together to share resources and fulfil our calling in the Church and in the World. We do this not because we want to get anywhere fast but because we want to go far in serving Jesus who revealed Gods love for all. In the village of Ashalta in Ethiopia, children like Frehiwot will soon have access to a new well, and won’t have to choose between water and school. Frehiwot and the people of Ashalta can look forward to a new chapter in their lives, thanks to your congregation. Because of your gift of clean water they can be healthy again, just as they are in the nearby village of Habt Amrach where we successfully drilled a borehole to bring life-saving water. Azmera is a young girl in this village who no longer has diarrhoea or water-related diseases. She has time to go to school and hopes to be a doctor when she’s older. With a reliable source of water, the people in this village are full of hope, good health and happiness. This is the incredible change we can replicate in villages like Frehiwot’s – and we will do, thanks to your help. On behalf of all those who will benefit from life-saving water because of your kindness – thank you. He and his brother Nazareth were separated from their families and forced into Syria. Over the next three years they would move between towns whose names we hear in the news today: Aleppo, Zahle, Damascus, Rayak. Along the road the brothers saw the bodies of Armenian women from their home city. Boghos wrote: “I was deeply moved and unable to continue my way.” Later the two brothers were crammed into trains: “Much like chickens we were transported in train cages.” At one crossroads they met up with other refugees all “sleepless, tired... wanting to go to the toilet ... hungry, thirsty ... trembling from their fear ... I was scared too ... I had been a rich and respected businessman ... now an Armenian deprived of all my worldly wealth.” Desperate to escape deportation to the dreaded desert outpost of Deir Zor, the brothers kept one step ahead of the Turkish officials. They were given shelter by a Christian Family, assisted by Kurds, and helped by several compassionate Turkish officials. Most likely there were times when money changed hand to ensure safe passage. One night they fled in the back of a buggy, covering themselves with rags. For several weeks they hid in a small, window-less shack. Their days were filled with confusion, monotony, fear, and crucial decisions to make with little time to deliberate. They longed for their wives and their children. Nearly a year later the men were reunited with loved ones, including Boghos’ young son (my grandfather). The family - elderly parents and young children included - spent the next two years moving around Syria. Their journey would take them back to Adana, across the sea to Cyprus, on to France (where my father was born), and eventually to New Jersey. Somewhere in most of our family histories there is hardship, tragedy, danger and migration. And deep in our Christian heritage, well before the holy family had to flee their own homeland, God reminded the people: “So, you too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in Egypt” (Deuteronomy 10:19, New Living Translation). l Rev David Markay serves in the Sheffield Circuit 4 l Ellie Peet describes a fantastic but e p i motional few days in Lithuania after talcum powder results in 10-hour flight delay THE skies were blue and the sun shining as Kristin and her friend Helen waved goodbye to England, Debbie and I. We were left stranded at the gate because security scanners identified my tin of talcum powder as a liquid, and Deb’s face cream as ... face cream! We followed on and landed ten hours, and much coffee, later. On the Thursday, after some sightseeing, we joined the Lithuanians for their family session held in a suburb of Kaunas, where we were staying, and hosted by their deacon, Helen. We joined them in Bible study and a craft session, and ate a simple meal with them before helping with the English class. Imagine learning English from an American and two Yorkshire ladies? Friday and Saturday we took part in the Methodist women’s retreats with the focus on “knowing Christ and making him known.” Two things struck me: the lady pastor was told that she needed to hire a nanny as she would be working on a Sunday and couldn’t expect to take her children to church; and they didn’t understand the concept of Mother and Toddlers or coffee mornings. The church was a place to worship on a Sunday and nothing else. So we shared with them the stories of the small groups running in our churches, and the benefits of them to the community and members, alongside the opportunities to share Christ and make Him known at every opportunity. We talked about how their individual churches could become a part of the community and encouraged them to think about simply meeting together for coffee, discussions and the sharing of life skills, particularly with young mums and families who were beginning to be integrated into their worship times. En route to one of these retreats we stopped at the hill of crosses which was originally set up as a protest to the Russians who continually bulldozed and destroyed the crosses the Lithuanians erected, but which has now become a place where people can ‘Knowing Christ and making him known at every opportunity . . .’ go to plant a cross as a memorial to a deceased loved one, some small and simple, others ornate and several metres high. It was an overwhelming and humbling experience. Sunday we joined in a Methodist service, using hymn books that Kristin helped to compile and translate, and with Kristin translating the prayers and reading to us. Deb’s enabled us to sing the hymns in English by getting them on her phone - but she wasn’t as successful with her interpretation of the instructions for communion and had the wafer in her mouth before she realised she should dip it in the wine first. Rather than take it out of her mouth she took the chalice from the bemused alter boy and took a drink! We’ve enjoyed the hospitality of the Lithuanian people in their churches and in their homes; we’ve eaten traditional dishes and shared worship with them. It’s been a fantastic but emotional few days, we’ve shared experiences with each other and our new friends, especially Deacon Helen and her husband the District Superintendent, Bill, who are planning to come to see us next year. We thank them for inviting us to join them and for opening their hearts and homes to us, and we thank Kristin for making it possible... even if she did leave us stranded at the gate! 5 ‘Teapot Lady’ celebrates her 100th birthday RENE as she was in her younger days l A busy year for MWiB - and a grand one too! WELL, it has been a busy year for the MWiB, with a film show, coffee afternoon, rally and meetings, not to mention the visits to District events. Throughout the last connexional year, our donations and fund-raising enabled us to make donations of £250 each to a local charity, The Starter Packs; a District charity, Tostan, which helps fight against female genital mutilation; the national MWiB funds; and the international World Mission Fund. A big thank you to all individuals and churches who contributed in any way. Our next local event is the film show when we will be showing “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” at Wombwell on Wed 11 November at 2.00pm. The cost will be £2 per person (all are welcome) and will be followed by refreshments. The next District event at Victoria Hall is the Christmas coffee morning on 20 November from 10.00am to 12.30pm (this replaces the annual Christmas fair). Barnsley circuit have been asked to arrange a tombola stall, so if any of you have any useful prizes, please let one of us know. Every blessing Margaret and Ellie 6 RENE Jeffels was born on 15 November 1915, the youngest daughter of Agnes and Arthur Fisher, at 12 High Street, Grimethorpe, in the flat above her fathers’s greengrocer’s shop. Her sisters were Florence, Doris and Elsie, all of whom are now sadly no longer with us. She attended school in Grimethorpe and on leaving at the age of 14 was employed in her father’s shop. After her marriage she took a job as a cleaning lady at the NCB’s No 4 (Carlton) Area offices in Grimethorpe. Some years later she went to work in Andrew’s business, being employed in the bakery. Rene was married to Joseph Jeffels at the Bethany Chapel in Grimethorpe in 1940 and was happily married until his sudden death in 1992. In 1945 she had a daughter, Josephine and now has a lovely grandson, Adrian, and two great grandchildren, Sonny and Heidi. She was a member of the Bethany Chapel and worshipped there until its closure. She has now transferred her membership to St. John’s at Cudworth. She was a member of the Bright Hour at Grimethorpe for many years and took her turn at running the coffee mornings on a Saturday. She was always known as ‘The Teapot Lady’. Rene still lives by herself and enjoys the television and reading. She also used to enjoy holidaying with her family until a couple of years ago. She also attends the Park Social Club in Grimethorpe a couple of days per week and still enjoys a game of bingo. She likes to go to the coffee morning at Cudworth Church and regularly attends Sunday morning services. She has many friends who take care of her. The things kids say . . . A schoolmaster, who was trying to discover what his class of boys knew of common objects, asked what it was a horse was made to wear when it went about its work. There was no reply and word ‘harness’ for which he sought was not forthcoming. So he said: “Is there any boy here whose father attends to horses?” “Yes sir,” said one small boy. “Then tell the class, George, what it is that your father puts on a horse every morning,” said the schoolmaster. “A fiver each way,” was the reply. (As told by former schools’ inspector and author Gervaise Phinn) ‘The Chapel is further enhanced as a place for worship in the community’ BEFORE AFTER Out with the old and in with the new at Higham THIS summer we have had further improvements done to the interior of the Chapel at Higham. We have had new oak panels fitted round the sides; replaced the old pews with the ones from Kexborough; new carpet fitted under the pews; new carpets in the vestry through to the entrance way and in the coffee lounge; and new flooring in the toilets. The chapel now looks beautiful and is further enhanced as a place for worship in the community here at Higham. It was a huge task for us and many, many thanks go to all members and friends who gave of their time in the preparation and cleaning up afterwards. Then we held a dedication service, faith tea, and a presentation to Yemi, who dedicated a new cabinet obtained by way of a donation received from a friend of the Church. Members from Kexborough joined us at a joint L/A at which the theme was ‘Tell Me The Stories of Jesus’ in verse and in song. Friendships were extended in the hall afterwards with tea and biscuits. Thanks must go to Bev Smith for the lovely organ cover and red back cusions for the pews. We are truly proud of our chapel sanctuary now and we all thank Les Howarth for project managing the whole scheme. - Stuart Hawden A prayer for the day ‘DEAR Lord, thus far today you should be proud of me. I haven’t gossiped, lost my temper, spoken in anger, been greedy, grumpy, selfish or over-indulgent. No ill feeling has entered my heart, nor have I begrudged another soul. I am very pleased with the way I have performed so far. However, in a few minutes, Lord, I will be getting out of bed to begin the day, and from that point on I will be in much need of your help and understanding. Thank you for being there for me. Amen’. 7 Church tower descent proves exhilarating, challenging and quite fast! “WOULD you like to do an Abseil for Christian Aid?” asked my friend Steph Cooper from Haxby in York (my previous church). “Sure!” I said. “When and where?” Within a week, Steph (Christian Aid Co-ordinator for East and North Yorkshire) had signed Lucy and myself up! We had suggested asking Leslie and Gill Newton to join us.....but alas it wasn’t to be! ON the weekend of Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 December Emmanuel is holding an Angel Festival. During the two days the Church will be open and hosting a number of events., including an Exhibition based on the theme of Angels, their part in Bible tradition and especially the Christmas story. The Exhibition will be open 10am – 4pm on the Saturday and then 2-4pm on the Sunday and there will be seasonal refreshments. Community groups, schools and various art and craft groups will be contributing to the Exhibition as well as many individuals, and if you would like to contribute a piece to be displayed please contact David Hines on 07477097834. We will accept exhibits in any category – photography, creative writing, sewing, needle-crafts, knitting, art, sculpture etc. – so get your creative juices going and feel free to get involved. Although plans are still evolving at the time of going to press we are hoping to leave angels in many places around the community for people to take home, and through a link, read for themselves the ‘real’ Christmas story. If you see a knitted angel on your journeys do feel free to pick it up and take it home! Also on the Saturday evening we are hoping to have a Community Angel Sing-a-long for all ages, and perhaps on the Sunday afternoon a ‘live’ Nativity scene, where people can come along, dress up and put themselves into the scene for a great photo opportunity! We are really excited about the Angel Festival and hope you might feel either you can contribute to our Exhibition practically and/or also come along and join in some of the events. Be an angel – come and see the Angel Festival! 9 DIARY DATES Pages 12, 13 - Plan Page 14 - Worship Leaders Page 15 - Local Preachers Page 16 - Church Stewards, Invited Preachers and Officials December 2015 Saturday 5th Thursday 10th 9.00am 2.00pm Christmas Free Festival & Christmas Fayre Carol Singing with Members from Pogmoor Ryhill Orchard View Thursday 10th Friday 11th 7.30pm 7.30pm Circuit Staff & Stewards Meeting Stuart Townend Emmanuel Saturday 12th Saturday 12th 10.30am 10.30am Christmas Coffee Morning Monk Bretton Churches Together in Hoyland Community - Nativity Hoyland Saturday 12th 10.30am Wombwell Churches Together - Carols Saturday 12th 10am-4pm Angel Festival Wombwell High Street Emmanuel Saturday 12th Sunday 13th Carol Concert - Jubilee Singers Angel Festival Birdwell Emmanuel Wombwell Mixed Voice Choir Concert Darfield Churches Community Carol Singing St Mary’s School Choir at Coffee Morning Circuit Stewards Meeting Christmas Concert with Barnsley Concert Band Grimethorpe Colliery Band Grimethorpe Colliery Band Christmas Coffee Morning Darfield Churches Community Carol Singing North East Churches Family Carol Service Wombwell Darfield Pogmoor 7.00pm 2pm-4pm Monday 14th 7.00pm Wednesday 16th 7.30pm Thursday 17th 10.00am Thursday 17th 2.00pm Thursday 17th 7.30pm Thursday 17th 7.30pm Friday 18th 7.30pm Saturday 19th 10.00am Saturday 19th 10.30am Monday 21st 2.00pm Monk Bretton Emmanuel Emmanuel Buckley Monk Bretton January 2016 Saturday 23rd 4.00pm Local Preacher Accreditation Service Emmanuel Sunday 31st 2.30pm Afternoon at the Proms Emmanuel 6.30pm 7.30pm Beetle Drive Circuit Meeting Great Houghton Cudworth February Saturday 6th Thursday 25th CIRCUIT SERVICE Saturday, 23rd January 2016 4pm at Emmanuel This will also be a Local Preachers’ Accreditation Service 10 REGULAR DIARY DATES Coffee Mornings: Every Saturday: Ryhill - 8.30am to 11am Hoyland - 9.30am to 12noon Buckley - 10am to 11.30am Hemsworth - 10am to 11.30am Cudworth 10.30am to 12noon Every Tuesday: Emmanuel - 10.30am to 12noon Every Thursday: Brierley - 9.15am to 11am Great Houghton - 10am to 11.30am Pogmoor - 10am to 11.30am 1st Saturday of each month: Kexborough - 10am to 11.30am Wombwell - 10am to 11.30am Shafton - 10.30am 2nd Saturday of each month: Monk Bretton - 10.30am 1st & 4th Saturday of each month: Staincross 10am 1st Thursday of each month: Higham - 10.30am Darfield Wesley - Churches Together in Darfield - Drop In each Tuesday at 9am Darfield Wesley - Coffee Morning and Good as New Shop 2nd & 4th Saturday 10am Great Houghton - Good as New Sale - 1st Saturday of each month at 2pm Pilley - Village Link - 1st Thursday of each month at 2pm Monk Bretton - Circle Dancing - 1st Thursday of each month - 7.30pm Prayer Meetings: Emmanuel - Monday 9am Shafton - Monday 6.30pm Emmanuel - Last Thursday of each month at 7.30pm Great Houghton - 3rd Thursday of each month 2pm to 4pm Prayers and Bible Study Men’s Breakfasts: Valley Darfield - 1st Saturday of each month 9am Emmanuel - Last Saturday of each month 8.30am Messy Church: Emmanuel - 2nd Tuesday of each Month 3.45pm Staincross - 1st Thursday of each month 3.30pm Shafton - 3rd Saturday of each month 10am Shake, Rattle & Praise Emmanuel - 3rd Thursday of each month 1.30pm Bereavement Drop In: Monk Bretton - Wednesday 3pm - 5pm Darfield Wesley 2nd & 4th Tuesday 2pm - 4pm 11 DECEMBER 2015 TO FEBRUARY 2016 December 6th December 13th Principle Reading 2nd of Advent 3rd of Advent Luke 3: 1-6 Luke 3: 7-15 December 20th 4th of Advent December 27th January 3rd Luke 2: 41-52 Luke: 1: 39-45 January Epiphany Covenant Sunday 1st of Christmas 1st in Ordin Matthew 2: 1-12 Luke 3: 15-1 THE METHODIST CHURCH BARNSLEY NORTH WEST - Rev. He was a man of deep faith, resulting in years of dedicated service to the Methodist Church, first in Lundwood and then Monk Bretton. Cyril served in many roles. In his younger days he was a Sunday School teacher and secretary for 20 years, following on into youth activities, working with his wife Marilyn as leaders of the Youth Club where weekly attendances were around 40. He also wore the mantle of property steward, which meant almost daily visits, checking and maintaining a sound, welcoming building. Each office was held with great responsibility, attention to detail and loyalty. Throughout his faithful service his abiding passion was church music and his love of the organ. This began when his grandfather Crossley introduced him to the piano at eight years of age, commenting that it may be useful in church one day. Cyril chartered over 50 years of organ playing, firstly at Lundwood, l Cyril seated at the Monk Bretton organ quickly followed by his move to Monk Bretton on the retirement of his uncle. Cyril’s proudest achievement was to receive a long service award from the Methodist Church in recognition of his 57 years service. Enrichment of worship was grounded in Cyril’s thorough preparation and many hours of practice. Lasting memories of Cyril’s gift include his sensitive selection of music for Holy Communion, when his deep faith shone through, creating moments of inspiration and peace. Thank you God for his life and service. ‘Keeping hope alive ...’ A FREE Advent resource, ‘Keeping Hope Alive’, has been released by the Methodist Church. Focusing on the significant works of the Methodist Church’s Mission in Britain Fund, the free resources include real-life stories, leader’s notes, a service outline and suggested prayers. One such story comes from Laura, who came across the Parson Cross Initiative (PXI), a Mission in Britain funded project, following a period of severe bi-polar illness. Separated from her two children, her job, her home and her support network, Laura was isolated and vulnerable; until last year when she joined an art group run by PXI. Speaking about the project, Laura said “The people running PXI offered me acceptance, friendship, practical support, homecooked soup and love. Sometimes hope is like a candle flame that has almost gone out; it doesn’t go out but sometimes I need friends to remind me that it is still there.” Laura is now actively involved in the art group, creative writing group, gardening club and is about to become a member of her local Methodist church. Since last year’s Advent Offering resource, ‘Watching and Waiting’ a generous giving to Mission in Britain has allowed the Methodist Church to support more than 20 projects like the Parson Cross Initiative across the UK. The Revd Steven Wild, President of the Methodist Conference, added: “The excellent ‘Keeping Hope Alive’ resource is a great opportunity to see just a snippet of the good works done across Britain by the Methodist Church. Putting on an Advent Offering service is one way in which you can help support others and get involved.” l If you would like to put on an Advent Offering service in your church, you can find out more information and register your event at www.methodist.org.uk/advent 17 Emmanuel is a growing presence in the community OVER the last year Emmanuel has made some significant strides in new community based projects, and continues to grow its presence in the local and wider Barnsley community. As many of you might have seen in a recent edition of the Barnsley Chronicle (9th October) in the pull out Horizon News, Kirstie Hall and Lisa Hayward are extending the Ignite (Secondary) School team’s work delivering short courses to selected young people, initially in Year 7, but also in Years 8 and 9. This work seeks to extend on the excellent feedback that was received last year from Horizon school showing that it makes a difference in terms of behaviour, self-esteem and self-confidence. It is hoped that over the coming year this work may also be extended to further secondary schools in the borough watch this space! Similarly the Ignite (Primary) work led by Lucy Stirk is also expanding - with primary school assembles and a Year 6 Transition Day being offered to further schools across the Circuit. The links with Gawber, Summer Lane, Wilthorpe and St Mary’s schools are also being strengthened and once again the feedback from primary schools has been really encouraging - many asking for more! Lifepath was successful once again last year, and the Core Team has been meeting already this Autumn to talk about expanding the event in another church in Barnsley. The project continues to receive generous external funding, enabling the project to be spearheaded by Kirstie Hall and Heidi Moore. We have a big vision for Barnsley Lifepath and our ultimate aim is for all children in the Borough to hear the story of James Hudson Taylor and his impact as a missionary! Emmanuel also secured funding for this Connexional Year to employ a part-time young person to work as part of the Methodist Church’s One 18 Programme. David Hines is leading the work, and is doing specific work concerned with working between different generations. He has already led a successful IT course where five more senior people were mentored by five younger people on a one-to-one basis (and he only began in September, at the end of which month he also became a dad! - see photo). Other projects include the Angel Festival (see page 9, cooking across the ages and also a creative project (perhaps a musical) where lots of different people will be able to work together. We are very privileged to have David working with Emmanuel for 15 hours a week, as well as sharing in the leadership of a number of national Methodist Church youth events. If you see him around please do encourage him - he is wonderful to have on board in a great staff team. All change at Kexborough Over a year has passed since it was decided to make alterations to our church. The Girls’ Brigade was short of rooms having a good number of different groups and was having to use the back of the church which was restricted by the pews. The front of our church was bitty having been changed from the original design twice, firstly the communion area was enlarged and made more usable in the days of Bryan Gates and later we removed the choir pews and made a place for a piano and lectern. One of our problems was the church heating, being designed for a coke boiler heating the place all winter it was not good enough to heat the place for just one day. By removing the pews we could have radiators to increase the heating. We wanted to remove the inefficient steel pipes and by changing the front of the church we could give access under the floor for the heating engineers. The new front was designed to be on a level with our prayer chapel and with a ramp to allow wheelchair users. We thought that our pulpit could be utilised as a reading desk, but when it was removed this proved to be impracticable. We had a front barrier with an oak top which our joiner made into a beautiful cross which now hangs in the centre of the front wall. Our request for permission to do the work stumbled when the District thought our church was a heritage building and nothing moved for months, but we managed to be able to start with the school holidays, when we had no l A view from the back of the church mid week meetings. To save money we removed the pews ourselves and Higham church came and took them for reuse in their church. The front of the church was all removed by ourselves giving the heating engineers a week to install the new radiators. Our joiner then built the front platform. It was at this time that we decided to part decorate, we could not reach the top or the two arches, which from the ground looked fair. Our quotes for the carpet allowed us to re-carpet all the church complete with the prayer chapel and entrance porch. The folding wall between the hall and the church was replaced to give better soundproofing and also to keep the Fire Officer happy as we have been instructed to make this a fire exit from the church. The last part of the project was the delivery of chairs. We have enough chairs for our usual morning congregation which will stay in place for most of the time. Stacking chairs to match these are stored so they can be wheeled out if necessary to fill the back half of the church which is usually left clear for mid week use and for toddlers to be kept entertained during worship. We hope that our new layout will make a welcome for any visitors we have whether church people or not. - John Durham BI 19 Is the Family Fellowshi NO doubt you’ve heard Eddie Hambleton going on about the annual trip to the Brierley Family Fellowship Weekend at Cober Hill Guest House, Cloughton. You may even have asked yourself, “is it for me?” Well the answer is “YES!” It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together and do as little, or as much, as they want; a time to recharge the batteries; relax with a book; help with the communal jigsaw; join in the games; partake of good food (without the washing up); or simply sit back and watch as everyone else rushes around trying to compete in every competition, make it to choir practice - and still have time left for the annual walk to the seafront. We go as a family - my mum (age 87), myself (a few years younger), my daughter (24) and granddaughter (14 months on her last visit). We enjoy spending time together while still having the freedom to do our own thing’ for mum the jigsaw, for me spending time with family and friends, for Kirsty an opportunity to shop, and for Ava the change to be the centre of attention while entertaining the doting adults. Give it a go and join us next year, alone or with friends. You’ll soon meet new people to share times and experiences with. Look forward to seeing you there! Ellie Peet 20 l The Peet family having a great time at Cloughton in March this year The first time - but certainly not the last! THE idea of going to the Brierley Fellowship Weekend had been planted in my head by Ellie Peet during a Bible study group she led at Valley some months prior to the event. Of course, I put the registration forms away somewhere safe and promptly forgot about it until Ellie asked me again much closer to the time. The weekend arrived and off we set, wondering what was in store for us. Would we enjoy it? Would we fit in? Any worries were quickly lifted upon arrival at the hotel, where we were greeted by our personal porter (Eddie), who, after checking us in, showed us to our room andexplained the outline of the weekend and where everything would be taking place. The Friday evening buffet was followed by a casual games and fun evening, which gave us the opportunity to get to know people in a relaxed atmosphere. In between breakfast and lunch on Saturday the serious games started! Golf putting, carpet bowls, table tennis and the Olympics. What a laugh - young and old all joining in together. Saturday evening saw no expense spared to bring top class entertainment to us. This was provded by ourselves. When I say ourselves I mean people who had been there previously. As newcomers we were let off. However, I have been rehearsing for next year. After breakfast on Sunday we had our morning service led by Ellie and Wayne. As you can image a service led by these two was anything but conventional. Needless to say the worship was wonderful and uplifting. Sunday lunch, and all too quickly, the time came to leave. What a wonderful weekend of friendship and fellowship. This was the first time, but certainly not the last. Looking forward to next year. - David Shone p weekend for you? l Every one a winner! Prizes galore at the games evening It does what it says on the tin! When March winds do blow And you’re feeling low, Brierley Chapel in Cloughton Is the place to go. l Pat McIntosh (on the left) finds time for coffee and a chat My ‘feel-good weekend’ I ALWAYS refer to the Brierley Family Fellowship Weekend as my ‘feel good weekend’ I had been feeling down since Graham passed away and then I was given the opportunity to join Brierley on their weekend away. I was a little nervous as it was the first time away without Graham. I needn’t have worried, because it was a wonderful weekend, with lots of love, laughter and fun the whole time. I didn’t feel alone because everyone looked after me so well. I even won a lovely prize for one of the quizzes. If you need a ‘feel good weekend’ come and join us I can certainly recommend it and I’ve already got my name down for next year! See you there! Pat McIntosh With friends to be made, And games to be played, With winks to tiddle and puzzles to fiddle, Then balls to pot - is that our lot?
