Emmanuel Episcopal Church
Athens, GA
Since 1843, Emmanuel Episcopal Church has served a diverse community in the heart of this
thriving university community. As part of a five-phase expansion project for the church, Eickhof
Columbaria installed a custom-designed columbarium in the fall of 2013. The new memorial space
provides a way for parishioners and their loved ones to remain connected to their church community even after death.
“It’s always been the custom to have church cemeteries, but clearly you can’t do that in the confines of the modern city,” says Fr. Robert Salamone, Emmanuel’s pastor. “And because so many
people today are opting for cremation, having a columbarium truly serves a growing need.”

OFFERING A PLACE OF COMFORT
Eickhof worked with landscape architect Josh Koons Environmental Landscape Design to design and fabricate a 466- 12'' x 12'' niche round columbarium within a courtyard that also includes a labyrinth and small garden reflection space. The columbarium is finished in Cambrian
Black granite with Elberton Grey granite surrounds.

Highland Park United Methodist Church
Dallas, TX
Highland Park wanted a serene, peaceful setting, to meet the columbarium demand from their congregation.
“They would ask us to have a space they could use as an alternative to cemeterial burial,” said Reverend Terry Jones,
associate minister of Highland Park. “They wanted a sacred space for that.”
The over arching design was to create something that really responded to the neo-Gothic architecture of the
church, so that it fit in and looked like it was part of the campus, not a standalone feature,” said Karl Von Bieberstein,
of Dallas landscaping firm, Newman Jackson Bieberstein. The first phase of the project includes niches built into the
rear wall of the church campus, and surrounding a waterfall. “We tried to create a garden space that seems to be an
extension of the existing church,” said Von Bieberstein. “What appears to be just a perimeter wall becomes revealed as
something else.”

CREATING A SACRED SPACE
“We have 380 families that have bought into it already,” said Rev. Jones. “We pre-sold enough to pay for the
first phase before we even built it.” The church also received donations from some individuals that had an interest in the project and wanted to see it completed quickly. So the fountain and several other features are dedicated
spaces.
Many different columbarium manufacturers were considered for the project. “We saw a lot of suppliers
and looked at a lot of different ideas,” said Von Bieberstein. “There simply wasn’t another niche manufacturer that
conveyed the elegance that Eickhof did. Hands- down, their use of stone, their concealed locking fasteners, the way
they put everything together . . . their solutions were just much more refined, clean and simple.”
Von Bieberstein and Rev. Jones also appreciated the ease of working with the Eickhof team. “They are easy
to work with, and they have customer service in mind,” said Von Bieberstein. “We’ve been delighted to be able to
work with them.”

Lovers Lane United Methodist Church
Dallas, TX
Lovers Lane United Methodist Church is a 67-year-old regional church with a diverse congregation of approximately 5,400 members. Reverend Stan Copeland had a vision for a columbarium garden that would offer a
uniquely spiritual space that could be enjoyed by the whole church community.
Rev. Copeland’s dream was sparked by the church’s first pastor, Tom Schipp, who was known to his congregation as “the shepherd.” When Schipp died, a memorial chapel was built in his honor. Rev. Copeland now wanted to
create a memorial garden that would celebrate “The Good Shepherd” from John:10.

A PLACE OF BEAUTY AND DIGNITY
The garden was designed by Karl Von Bieberstein,
longtime member of Lovers Lane. It creates a richly symbolic walk through the Twenty-Third Psalm and the “I
AM” sayings of John, and features tribute gifts of bronze
and stone sculptures as well a baptismal fountain. The
bronze sculptures were created by artist Barvo Walker, and
the stone sculptures by Harold Clayton.
“When you reach the part where you’re standing
at the scene of resurrection, you’re looking at the columbarium wall, and engraved is the conclusion of the psalm,
‘I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever,’” said Rev.
Copeland.
The Shepherd’s Garden at Lovers Lane includes nearly 700 niches. “Participation has been better than expected, and really increasing,” said Rev. Copeland. The church offers the opportunity for memorial stones as well as
engraved niches. “People are really wanting to memorialize and honor their loved ones in this garden because it’s
become such an epicenter of the church campus.” It is surely a place of beauty and dignity.

Our Lady of the Lake- Mount Carmel Church
Lake Carmel, NY
Father Anthony Domenic Sorgie, recently installed at St. James, offered a compelling vision . . . to transform neglected space surrounding Our Lady of the Lake Church into a beautiful natural gathering place for all members of the
parish. The area had originally been built from native rock in the 1930s, and offered a unique setting to be updated and
enhanced. The concept for the project included stone garden walls in which columbarium niches would be installed.
Fr. Sorgie’s vision was that the new construction and landscaping would look as though it had always been there.
Both the parish and civic community embraced the project. William L. Kelly, whose company provides construction
management services, and Joseph Lazarcheck–JPL Architect and Robert Sherwood–R.L.A. became part of the design
team. They explored columbarium manufacturers in New York, and then broadened their search throughout the country to find a company that could provide niches that could be incorporated into the garden walls.

FINDING PEACE IN THE CHURCHYARD
“No other company fit our needs as well as Eickhof
Columbaria,” said Kelly. “We had a project team review
the information and decide on which manufacturer would
be awarded the job. Eickhof Columbaria simply offered
the best product. Paul Eickhof was able to accommodate
our design requirements and scheduling. Their bid was in
budget and actually fit our design needs better than all the
others.”
Eickhof Columbaria’s detailed shop drawings were
incorporated into the final architectural plans for construction, and the team worked together to see how the final
details and finishes would come together. Kelly credits Paul
Eickhof ’s experience and attention to detail as the keys to a
successful outcome, ensuring that the final product offered
both simple functionality and aesthetic appeal that was in
keeping with the design concept.
