WINTER VACATIONS TO START PLANNING NOW Ready or not, winter is coming. Whether your ideal winter moment is a cup of hot cocoa after a day on the slopes, or if you’re looking to escape the chill, quality vacations are by no means restricted to summertime. In fact, many families prefer winter travel to certain destinations because the crowds have thinned and the flights are less expensive. Here are some ideas to get you started: and play in the surf, or try to spot whales from atop the Makapu’u Lighthouse Hiking trail. If you make it to Honolulu during the first week of December, you’ll be just in time to sing “Mele Kalikimaka” at the Downtown Honolulu Holiday Lights Parade! NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA. December and January are relatively calm months in New Orleans, one of America’s most beloved Southern cities. We love New Orleans for its French Quarter, beignets, and lively jazz clubs, so a stay in New Orleans could be the perfect winter getaway for those looking experience the city before the revelry of Mardi Gras. PARK CITY, UTAH. If you spend all spring and summer dreaming of fresh powder on the mountain, come ski some of the country’s most beautiful runs in Park City. Home to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Park City continues to lure tourists with its lofty slopes and breathtaking natural beauty. www.WIRIGORTHO.com As busy as the project has kept me, I do my best to carve out quality time with my family, which is always the most important and enjoyable part of my day. As autumn is settling in and the kids are settling into their new classrooms and the work that comes with them, I have the opportunity to help them with their homework. In doing so, I have had a few big reminders of how much I disliked doing homework in school. In fact, my wife and I were just talking about how we didn’t realize that after completing our own educations, we’d still have another 20 years of homework to do with our kids! We marked the “official” end of summer on Labor Day by getting together and having homemade ice cream, but we’re doing as much boating at the lake as we can while the weather is still perfect for it. Since our HONOLULU, HAWAII. If it’s paradise you’re after, start planning for a winter retreat in Honolulu. I’ve been incredibly busy getting the new office ready, stopping by on an almost daily basis to make sure the process is going as planned. The walls are up, and we’re moving on to the next stage. It’s amazing to see what I had imagined for the office and put on paper come to life. It really gives me an appreciation for the work that construction workers and contractors do. To see something start as a dream and a piece of paper become a real structure is a fascinating thing. Published by The Newsletter Pro • www.thenewsletterpro.com Published by The Newsletter Pro • www.thenewsletterpro.com kids are young, they love to go tubing, but we’re teaching them how to wakesurf, which is kind of a new sport for everyone, but they are getting it. Hopefully the weather will hold up as long as it did last year so we have a few more weeks out on the water with them during these really nice months. And of course, fall wouldn’t be fall without football. My wife tends to get annoyed when football season starts because I always want to watch it. I love football — I’m a big BYU fan — and my boys are quickly becoming fans as well. It’s great because it’s like having a bunch of brothers to watch the games with. Additionally, having boys who like sports is advantageous, because I have someone on my side when my wife starts getting annoyed with it. Speaking of which, marriage is an excellent place to strike a balance, and so I do try not to spend too much of my free time parked in front of the TV, even during this season. My wife and I are spending a few days working and playing in Phoenix for a marriage weekend conference. The conference is through a dental consultant who also happens to be a big advocate for families, so the conference revolves around building better relationships with your spouse and working on marriage growth. Although it is easy to get caught up in work (and football), there is a certain level of balance you have to maintain in your life no matter what is going on. You cannot be all one thing and one thing only. Personal relationships are so much more important than anything else, yet we tend to devote less time to them. By making a conscious effort, we can create more balance between our personal and professional lives, and make time for the things that matter the most. ~Dr. Matthew Wirig PHONE (702) 454-1008 • 1 Better Safe than THE DANGERS OF SKIPPING REGULAR DENTAL CHECKUPS Scary Has anyone ever really explained to you why regular dental checkups are so important? Primarily, it’s to make sure everything is going well with your oral health. There are a few things the dental checkup can help you avoid. Halloween comes with a lot of buildup. Seasonal costume chains set up months in advance. Haunted houses are designed to the letter with every ounce of fake blood measured for the maximum scare, and every stitch of the perfect costume is meticulously laid out for a single night of frightening frivolity. Yet, in all the planning and pumpkin carving, we seem to forget that Halloween is also the one night per year when children big and small comb the neighborhoods for tricks and treats, so here are some tips to ensure your ghosts and ghouls all get home safely: IF THE LIGHTS AREN’T ON, NOBODY’S HOME. This is perhaps the most important tip. Make sure your kids know to only visit houses with porch lights switched on. No lights means the homeowners are either not in or don’t want visitors. Not only will this save your kiddies from a trick-or-treat letdown, but it also makes you a courteous neighbor. NEVER TRICK-OR-TREAT ALONE. Young kids, especially, should not be unsupervised on Halloween night. With all the decorations, noises and other kids about, it’s easy for them to get lost in the shuffle. Of course, escorting kids from house to house doesn’t have to be boring. Dress to match 1. up plaque when you eat. Even with regular brushing and flossing, it’s liable to accumulate and harden as tartar. If you don’t remove it before it embeds itself underneath your gum tissues, it can silently start to dissolve away the bones. your kid’s costume (a Keebler elf and a tree), or opt to dress up as their favorite movie or literary hero (be the Chewbacca to their Han Solo or the prince to their favorite princess). Halloween isn’t just for the children, you know. 2. 3. In anticipation for his wedding next May, Dr. Martinez and his fiancé recently took engagement pictures at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. For those who are not familiar with this state park, it is located next to Red Rock National Park and is a beautiful place to have a picnic. You may be wondering, “Where are the pictures?” Well, his fiancé considers them classified until wedding invites are sent. Insider’s tip: He may show you a few pics on his phone if you ask him. DR. MORNEAU: Dr. Morneau recently shared with Dr. Wirig that his son, Hugo, has not been sleeping well. One week later a package containing a white noise machine arrived at his doorstep. It was a gift from Dr. Wirig. Dr. Morneau is happy to report that Hugo is now sleeping through the night. 2 • www.WIRIGORTHO.com GUM DISEASE: The bacteria you get from gum disease are linked to heart disease. All of the accumulated gunk on your teeth will produce billions of bacteria that can get into your bloodstream and ultimately end up lodged in the heart, clogging blood vessels and weakening your immune system. Note that periodontal and gum disease work in silence. You won’t usually see any obvious signs that damage is occurring, and you won’t be aware of complications for years — but you can save yourself a lot of pain and expense by just making sure you get into the dental office twice per year. In addition to periodontal disease, tooth decay, and gum disease, your dentist also checks for oral cancer, bite problems, and other issues to make sure everything looks good. If you can nip these problems in the bud and walk out with a beautiful clean smile twice per year, it makes good sense to do it! Even the smallest of precautions can help make for a spook-tacular night of candy collecting. FROM THE DOCTORS DR. MARTINEZ: TOOTH DECAY: A little cavity is easy to fix, but a big cavity can become a big problem. In the most serious stage, cavities can lead to the loss of a tooth, with a lot of suffering and swelling along the way. A lost tooth could create a domino effect and dangerous pressure on the other teeth. STRATEGIZE. Maybe you want to hit the scariest house first or fan out and then work your way back to your home streets — either way, should you get separated from your little ones or just want to give the older ones a bit of freedom, always have a back-up plan. Map your route ahead of time. Pick a common area or wellknown street to rendezvous at the end of the night. If kids venture into neighboring suburbs, make sure they know the way back.
