Grapplers sweep Scarlets, Saints and Wildcats
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It was a highly successful week for
the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester
Prairie wrestling team. The Panthers
swept their way through a triangular
meet at Mankato West on Tuesday,
Jan. 12, and a dual matchup at New
London-Spicer two nights later.
GSL/LP opened its week by defeating host Mankato West 39-36 and
St. Peter 43-36 for the team’s second
triangular sweep of the season.
The Panthers battled back from an
initial 18-3 deficit against Mankato
West, with GSL/LP’s first points
coming off Zach Voelz’s 8-7 decision
over Wyatt Block at 106 pounds.
Kole Polzin claimed a major decision over Antonio Cruise at 132 for
four more points, with Alex Mielke’s
15-0 major decision over Dustin
Mueller at 145 triggering a rally.
Aaron Donnay bested Garrett
Block in an 11-1 major decision at
152, Dylan Melchert pinned Ethan
Rademacher for a win by fall in 3
minutes, 51 seconds at 160 and Cody
Rae earned a 16-0 technical fall
against Simon Koenings to give the
Panthers a 27-24 advantage.
GSL/LP and Mankato West split
the final four matches, with the Panthers’ wins both coming by fall. Tristan Weber pinned Rylan Moser in
5:11 at 195 before Peyton Sell
clinched the win for his team by pinning Seth Macdonald in 1:32 at 285.
It was nearly as close between
GSL/LP and St. Peter. The Saints
gained a 36-0 lead with wins or wins
by forfeit in the first six matches before the Panthers swept the final
eight matches to snatch the sevenpoint win.
Donnay earned a major decision at
145, winning 12-4 over Sage Loredo-Hollon, Mielke defeated Manuel
Gomez 12-4 at 152, Rae pinned Eli
Hunt in 3:24 at 170; also pinning
their opponents were Dalton Kosek
against Sean Driscoll in 4:25 at 182
and Paul Lemke against Jacob
Pehrson in 1:23 at 285. Melchert
(160), Weber (195) and Sell (220) all
won by forfeit.
The longest part of the Panthers
match at New London-Spicer on
Thursday, Jan. 14, was by far the
road trip, as GSL/LP defeated their
hosts 51-27 in a match that featured
10 total forfeits out of 14 matches.
The Panthers trailed 15-0 early
after the Wildcats won 7-5 at 106
pounds and claimed forfeits at 113
and 120.
Polzin got GSL/LP on the board by
pinning Max Firkens, winning by fall
in 1:53 to make the score 15-6.
Two more forfeits in favor of the
Wildcats at 132 and 138 were countered by forfeit wins by the Mielke
and Donnay at 145 and 152, respectively, to make the score 27-18.
It was all GSL/LP from there.
Melchert claimed a win by fall
over Nick Reiter at 2:49 to bring the
Panthers to within three points at 2724, before Kosek’s win by forfeit at
170 gave the visitors the lead for
good at 30-27.
Nick Brelje earned a 10-3 win over
Josh Soine at 182 in the last of three
competed weight classes before
Weber (195), Sell (220) and Lemke
(285) all won by forfeit to finish off
the night in a 24-point win for the
Panthers.
GSL/LP returns home for the first
of its two meets this week before returning to New London for the other.
The Panthers will host conference
foe Litchfield this Thursday on Senior Night/Youth Night, with varsity
tentatively scheduled to take the mat
at 7 p.m.
The next afternoon, GSL/LP heads
back west for an eight-team invitational meet that is slated to commence at 3:30 p.m.
Girls’ hoopsters
are rolling with
the punches

With the season just rounding the halfway point, the
Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’
basketball team continued to
sport a .500 record in spite of
back-to-back defeats against
the top two teams in the
Wright County Conference
West last week.
After opening 2016 with a
pair of victories to hit a high
water mark of 7-5 on the year,
the Panthers were knocked
down a few pegs in a 78-59
loss at WCC West leader Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday,
Jan. 12 and a 51-45 home setback vs. conference No. 2
Annandale three nights later.
“It hurts to go 0-2 against
conference teams,” coach
Zach Otto-Fisher said. “But
our girls battled.”
GSL took it on the chin in a
19-point loss at Watertown.
The Royals ran out to a 38-24
halftime lead and increased
their edge until the final horn
sounded. Guards Maddie
Monahan and Molli Cacka
led the Panthers with 19 and
15 points, respectively. Monahan had nine rebounds and
five assists, while Cacka
notched five boards and three
assists.
“It was a tough night,”
Otto-Fisher said. “We had a
couple of girls who just were
not on their game and it was
hard for the others to get their
shots to go.”
While it appeared the Annandale game would have
much the same story, GSL
wrote a much different final
chapter.
The Panthers rallied from a
17-point second-half deficit,
cutting the Cardinals’ lead to
two points late before falling
by six points.
“I was really proud of the
way the girls battled back,”
Otto-Fisher said. “Three of
Annandale’s starters were
taller than our tallest girl, but
we fought through that size
disadvantage. We did well
when we pressed (the Cardinals); we got them out of
rhythm. Unfortunately, we are
not deep enough to do that for
an entire game.”
The Monahan sisters, Maddie and Mac, scored all but
four of GSL’s points with 29
and 12, respectively. Maddie
Monahan had three steals and
four rebounds, while Mac
Monahan also had four rebounds. Guard Miranda
Grack had five rebounds,
with Cacka hauling in three
boards.
Forward Maddy Kalenberg
had two rebounds and a pair

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
boys’ basketball team knew
that last week was going to be
fraught with difficulty.
And it was.
Facing two of the top teams
in the Wright County Conference West in WatertownMayer and Annandale, the
Panthers took two solid losses
square on the chin to drop to
4-11 on the season.
“It was sure to be a tough
one,” coach Robb DeCorsey
said of the two-game stretch.
“We really needed to play
well – and didn’t.”
Coming off a two-game
winning streak, the Panthers
opened last week by hosting
WCC West newcomer Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, Jan.
12. The Royals, who have lost
just once in conference play,
amassed a 31-18 halftime lead
on their downtrodden hosts.
“Watertown is good, and
long. We struggled – had a lot
of shots blocked and made
some weak attempts inside,”
DeCorsey said. “We were
kind of in it for a while, but
then the guys got down and
we were going through the
motions again.”
Buoyed by guard Teddy Petersen, who – playing in his
third game back from injury –
scored a team-high 14 points
in approximately 21 minutes,
GSL played the visitors to a
near draw in the second half,
en route to a 65-51 loss.
“Teddy’s minutes were too
heavy,” DeCorsey said. “Didn’t mean to have him play that
many minutes, but he went on
a little tear. He was playing a
very effective 1-on-5 for a
while.”
Twelve players in all scored
for GSL as DeCorsey went
deep down the bench in
search of scoring. Three of the
team’s regulars in forwards
Alex Romano and Jacob

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
gymnastics team made their
last road trip of the regular
season last week, traveling to
a dual meet at Howard Lake
on Tuesday, Jan. 12, as well
as an eight-team invitational
in Farmington on Saturday,
Jan. 16.
The Panthers recorded
119.875 points in finishing
second to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and 114.75 in
placing sixth at Farmington.
“I think the girls are doing
a great job keeping up with
the many meets we have
going on this month,” coach
Kim Hahn said. “Some
meets go better than others,
but that is to be said for all of
our meets. The important
piece is that they are going
out there and doing their best
and having fun while doing
it.”
Marissa Greeley recorded
scores over eight in three of
four events at HLWW to
place second in the all-
around with 31.275. Greeley
scored an 8.25 on the balance
beam to place second in that
event – her top result of the
night.
Gia Venier placed fourth in
the all-around with a 29.8.
Her best result was an 8.15
on the vault, earning her
sixth in that event.
Nichole Binder took second on vault with 8.5, just
ahead of Ellie Schmidt’s
third-place vault score of
8.475.
The Panthers scored
33.125 on vault, 30.65 on
floor exercise, 28.875 on
beam and 27.225 on uneven
bars.
“At Howard Lake, the
team looked really good,”
Hahn said. “Scoring on floor
and vault seemed to be lower
than we were use to though.”
At Farmington, Greeley
placed 11th in the all-around
with a 30.4, while Venier was
18th at 28.7. Greeley claimed
the Panthers’ best individual
event finish with an 8.5 to
take fifth on the vault.
GSL scored a 32.55 on
vault, 30.5 on floor, 26.1 on
beam and 25.6 on bars.
“The Farmington invite
was a lot of fun,” Hahn said.
“Vault scores were better
from Howard Lake, some
beam scores improved, a
couple bar scores were lower
individually, floor scores for
some were a little lower but
for others right where we
have seem them.”
After spending the first
seven meets of their season
on the road, the Panthers are
ready for some home cooking and the final five regularseason meets are at home.
GSL hosted Litchfield on
Tuesday, Jan. 19, after the
Chronicle went to press and
are slated to welcome Waconia to town on Thursday
night.
The Panthers do not return
to the road until the Section
2A meet on Feb. 12.
“Looking forward to home
meets until the end of the
season on Feb. 2,” Hahn
said.

Otto-Fisher said that while
the senior’s efforts don’t always show up on the statsheet, she is an invaluable
member of the squad.
“Maddy is such a solid
player for us,” he said.
“She’s one of our best rebounders and is fantastic at
forcing jump balls. She’s always finding the ball and
doing the little things right.”
Despite the two-game losing skid, Otto-Fisher remains
optimistic for what’s to come
– even in the face of a fourgame road trip that concludes
on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at New
London-Spicer. The Panthers
played at Mound Westonka
on Tuesday, Jan. 19, after the
Chronicle went to press, and
travel to both Rockford and
Norwood-Young America
this Friday and Saturday, respectively.
“We have a couple of big
conference games this week.
I think we match up well
with Mound Westonka and
Rockford,” Otto-Fisher said.
Saturday’s game at Norwood-Young America is the
first of a girls/boys doubleheader against the Raiders.
Much is on the line in
terms of bragging rights,
team pride – NYA ended
GSL’s season in last year’s
Section 2AA subsectional
final – and seeding for the
upcoming section tournament.
“It’s always a good game

Popelka and guard Luke
Frahm each scored five points
apiece.
“We’ve been trying some
different guys – been looking
a little deeper down the
bench,” DeCorsey said. “A lot
of the guys we tried were not
ready, but we’ve got to keep
trying to look for offense.”
Only seven Panthers scored
on a 9-for-22 shooting night
as GSL was doubled-up in a
52-26 loss at Annandale on
Friday, Jan. 15. Petersen again
led the squad with eight
points in 10 minutes of play.
Guards Shane Ehrke joined
Romano and Popelka with
four points apiece.
The game was over almost
from the start, with the Cardinals soaring to a 31-9 halftime
lead on a visiting side that
clearly had its collective
dauber down.
“Annandale shot well, but
they didn’t show us anything
that should have thrown us off
that bad,” DeCorsey said.
“We rebounded well on the
offensive end, but we just
couldn’t make our shots. We
actually had more shots than
Annandale, but we just couldn’t knock them down.”
Other than a spirited flurry
to start the second half, GSL
again struggled to match the
opponent’s intensity – an alltoo familiar incidence, according to DeCorsey.
“We’ve got to fight through
the ‘here we go again” attitude,” he said. “Just can’t get
ourselves down when things
aren’t going well. We needed
to play the whole game with
the kind of intensity that we
showed coming out of halftime.”
It doesn’t get much easier
for GSL this week. The Panthers hosted up-and-coming
Mound Westonka on Tuesday,
Jan. 19, after the Chronicle
went to press, before welcoming WCC West leader Rockford to town on Friday night.
The Rockets entered this
week with a 14-2 overall
record and were an unblemished 5-0 in conference play.
After that? It’s just a critical
section matchup at neighboring rival Norwood-Young
America in the second game
of a girls/boys doubleheader
against the Raiders.
“Norwood is a huge
game,”DeCorsey said. “We
need to win it pretty badly, or
we’ll most likely be the bottom seed in the section.”

I
f you have lived in Minnesota for any amount of time, you can identify with me that January can feel like one of the longest
and darkest months of the year. For me personally, January is sometimes a tough month to get through. That is usually why I
insist on keeping our Christmas lights up until early February. That extra light at night, kind of brightens things up.
Our life can at times feel like a cold windy January day in which everything seems so gray and lifeless. In our hearts, we are
still like kids, longing for the comfort and joy of a swimming pool. We long for an oasis of rest and warmth, a chance to get away
from the stress of life and to find lasting peace.
This past week I got to take my kids to Safari Island Community Center in Waconia. Walking into the building there was such a
stiff cold wind, but it didn’t seem so bad to my kids, in their anticipation of having a chance to swim inside, where they knew
there would be an abundance of water to play in.
Later that day, I thought about how Jesus Christ offered the “Woman at the Well” living waters, in which she would not thirst
again. In Isaiah 55:1-3, the LORD invites all those who thirst and hunger after righteousness to come to HIMSELF and find satisfaction. In Christ there is enough for all and enough for each. There is no entrance fee; the only requirement in those that shall be
welcome is “THEY MUST THIRST.” Instead of thirsting for God, many look to the world & others to find real satisfaction and
joy. This leads to running after worldly pursuits, seeking happiness outside of God, and not seeing one’s need for Christ. There is
always that next distraction, that momentary event and that voice telling you, you can think about God some other time. And yet
you still feel that nagging empty feeling on the inside.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to be left out on the outside. For those who thirst spiritually, they are invited
to “the waters” just as those who labor, and are heavy-laden are invited to Christ for rest. Jesus said, “If any man thirst let him
come to me and drink.” (John 7:37) What a great promise. Come and eat, make it still more your own, as that which we eat is
more our own that than which we only buy. Be willing to part with worldly things that are not lasting. The Lord says, “Seek ye
the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man
his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God for He will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:6-7). What is keeping you outside and preventing you from a lasting relationship with the LORD?
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.

History of fur trade to be presented Sunday, Jan. 31
The McLeod County Historical Society will present a
history of the fur trade and
fur-bearing animals on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m., in the
museum educational media
center. The museum is located at 380 School Road NW,
Hutchinson.
The presentation is part of
the society’s Community
Book Read, “Canoeing With
the Cree.”
The program will be presented by Lori Pickell-Stangel and Joe Stangel, and will
use artifacts from the museum, and furs of mink,
muskrat, beaver, fox and
more.
In “Canoeing With the
Cree,” the main characters go
on a canoeing adventure, and
relates the people and culture

developed 100 years ago before the two young boys embarked on their adventure.
A drawing for a free edition
of “Canoeing With the Cree”
will be held at the program.
Coffee and cookies will be
served.
