19th Annual ride for the Pass!

n enthusiastic group of several hundred riders
turned out on May 18 to renew a tradition that is
almost two decades old -- the Independence Pass
Foundation’s annual “Ride for the Pass.” After a 16-year
record of fair weather on Ride day, this yearly excursion
up the Pass, without the presence of automobile traffic,
was cancelled in 2011 and 2012 due to snow and rain that
would have caused unacceptable hazards for bicyclists.
This year the weather cooperated!
The Ride benefits the Foundation’s ongoing efforts
to restore the original beauty and ecological integrity
of the Independence Pass corridor. We are grateful to the
businesses, volunteers and the more than 300 bicyclists
who contributed to and participated in the Ride.

Thank You Ride for the Pass Sponsors!
The 19th Annual Ride for the Pass took place May 18, 2013
under partially sunny skies, breaking the two-year jinx of
cancellations due to snow. Hundreds of riders enjoyed the Ride
and the party that followed at the Sky Hotel. The Ride is only a
race if riders want it to be. There are two starting times--one for
competitive riders and one for recreational. Middle photo: IPF
could not present the Ride without the assistance of community
volunteers, including members of the IPF Board of Directors.

IPF restores An
Eroding & Unsightly Gully
T
Mark Fuller Photo
Mark Fuller Photo
he Independence Pass Foundation
engaged Aspen Earthmoving in July
to restore a large washout near Mile
Marker 57 on the Pass, where an unsightly
gully has been steadily growing. Before the
restoration work began, the gully area had
grown to about 90-feet-long, 15- to 18-feetdeep and 30-feet-wide at the roadside edge.
Undermining native vegetation and
spilling dirt and rocks onto the road, the
gully washed out in a particularly wet
spring several years ago. Seepage from
the hillside caused it to grow gradually
since then.
“This project has been on our ‘wish list’
for some time, and this year we were able
to include it in our summer work projects,”
said Executive Director Mark Fuller.
“Visitors to the area will now see an
attractive hillside along the shoulder
of the road where there was once an ugly
scar on the land.”
Restoration included reinforcing the
slope with geotextile material, stabilizing
the area with drainage structures, and
filling the gully with compacted gravel
and large rocks. The Foundation will also
revegetate the entire area with native
grasses and trees to restore habitat and
maintain natural contours.
Aspen Earthmoving was IPF’s major
contractor in building the native rock
retaining walls that lie just below the
summit on the western side.
Placing rocks with extraordinary precision, Aspen Earthmoving trackhoe
operator fills the gully at Mile Marker 57 with rocks and compacted gravel.
IPF will revegetate the entire area.

n Compost Blanket Installation. Our compost blanket
work along the Top Cut on the west side of the Pass will

a charcoal-flake product, with the compost to help with
moisture retention and carbon availability.
E
2013 Work is Underway!
very year the Independence Pass Foundation takes
advantage of the window of opportunity between when
the snow melts from the hillsides on the Pass to when
autumn snows prevent further work on our diverse projects.
Here are some of the projects that are underway this season.
n Snow Fence Debris Cleanup. We expect the U.S. Forest
Service mule team to return this year to collect and pack
out small snow fence debris (rebar stakes, cable, nuts, and
bolts) from the ridgelines surrounding the Pass as they did
last year. In addition, our inmate crews will work to sort
and stack snow fence “leftovers” in Mountain Boy Gulch
east of the summit so that material can be removed in
future years.
n Lake Creek Trailhead. We began work at the Lake
Creek Trailhead just east of the summit of the Pass in 2012,
and we will continue to improve this site in 2013 with regrading of the entry road and plantings aimed at restoring
the native plant community. Degraded by overuse, this
popular area is in dire need of attention.
The Independence Pass Foundation
is grateful to The Thrift Shop of Aspen
for its generous grant of $5,000 in
support of the IPF Newsletter.
n Linkins Lake Overlook. The overlook just below the
Linkins Lake Trailhead has been significantly improved
over the last two years, and will be completed this year
with the addition of informational signs in several
locations. We invite all visitors to the Pass to stop at this
attractive turnout and take a moment to appreciate the
beauty and history of Independence Pass.
n Summit Trail Rehabilitation. Visitors to the Pass
summit may recall the old road that starts at the paved
summit path and takes hikers along the Continental
Divide south of the parking lot. This year IPF is planning a
maintenance project that will reduce the size of that road
to a single-track walking path while reclaiming and
re-planting areas that have been damaged by overuse.
n Digital Updates and Social Media. IPF is committed to
communicating its mission and activities through a variety
of means, including social media such as Facebook,
Twitter and YouTube. We have established a Facebook
page and joined Twitter (@IndPassFound), and we are creating short videos this summer aimed at spreading our
message across those platforms. Follow us to get the latest
information of our projects and happenings on the Pass.
