In today’s economy movement from surviving to thriving requires new strategies. What are the industry
trends? Come hear from the leaders of today.
Brian Allen began his 20 year
tenure in the dental arena in Canada with
Dentsply gaining experience in sales and
sales management prior to relocating to

Rick’s tenure with Shaw, he has grown
a 5-person facility, strictly doing dentures, into a
27-person full service lab dedicated to meeting all the
requirements of all its valued customers. Throughout
his career, Rick has introduced a number of service
areas to Shaw Kingston, including Crown and Bridge
and Ceramics and a Chrome department. Most notably,
Rick has been a pioneer in Implant technology, working
with the various Implant systems since 1978 as a
teacher and technologist. In addition, Rick has been
very active within the lab profession, recognized as both
Past President of the College of Dental Technologists of
Ontario and as Past President of the Commercial Dental

Digital Dentistry: Beyond Imagination
Understanding the complex relationship between tooth form and function, and how they relate and combine
to create the esthetics of natural dentition, is the basis of study for achieving predictable success in oral
reconstruction. The newest technology to enter dentistry is CAD/CAM. As Dentistry evolves into the digital
world, the successful incorporation of computerization and new acquisition and manufacturing technologies
will continue to provide more efficient methods of restoration fabrication and communication, while at the same
time retaining the individual creativity and artistry of the skilled Dentist and Technician. The evolution from Hand
design to Digital design and the application of Diagnostic 3D previews, along with provisional restorations, and
their digital replicas to guide the restorative team in the creation of CAD/CAM restorations will be presented.
Lee Culp, CDT is the founder of Mosaic Studios and the Institute for Oral Art and Design. He maintains
an active teaching schedule at IOAD, as well as the Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Study, and other
postgraduate teacher centers focusing on reconstructive and esthetic dentistry. Lee is the executive editor
of Spectrum, a dentist technician communication journal. He is also on the editorial board of Signature,
Signature International, Practical Periodontics and Aesthetic Dentistry, and Compendium. Lee is an assistant
editor for Contemporary Esthetics and Restorative Practice, and he has a column “Tech Talk” in Dental Lab

Simplified Restorative Options for Predictable Results with Dental Implants
In this lecture and hands-on presentation, Dr. Bortolussi will introduce attendees to the components of
an effective implant system and detail the restorative process. Biological reasons for essential features
in an implant system will be discussed, especially in regards to the potential for success in the anterior
esthetic zone. Immediate implant placement and provisionalization, along with the ideal emergency
profile prior to final impressions will be presented. Furthermore, the restorative process for dental
implants will be demystified, from selecting an appropriate abutment to important considerations
in single and multiple tooth restorations and overdenture attachments. In the hands-on portion of
the program, attendees will familiarize themselves with an implant prosthetic kit while learning how
an ideal surgical implant placement with soft-tissue development offers a simplified step-by-step
impression technique. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
•
•
•
•
Understand options and solutions for replacement of tooth esthetics
Understand the benefits and procedures for solid abutments
Become familiar with implant and abutment level impression procedures
Understand the need for a surgical guide and basic concepts
Dr. Jason Bortolussi

th ti ddentistry and does both dental simulation as well as diagnostic virtual wax-up. The software serves as
a laboratory prescription to guide the dental team to perform an on-screen simulated smile. He believes it is technology
that makes us visualize the desired smile and allows us to manifest it on stone models in such a precise way even before
executing it on a patient. Technology also incorporates itself in 3D systems, which will allow the industry to make a giant
step forward in esthetic dentistry.

details of history-taking related to the treatments. A comprehensive review of facial anatomy will
be provided. After the break, team members will be shown how to integrate these procedures into
the dental practice. The initial telephone conversation and appointment booking, tray setups, and
incorporation of Botox treatments into the recare system will be addressed. Time management, billing
(GST), marketing of facial aesthetics and, if time permits, a team hands-on reconstituting of Botox will

Patient-Centered Design of Anterior Esthetic Restorations
The art and science of creating predicable porcelain restorations of teeth can be very rewarding. There
are, however, significant challenges that have to be identified and dealt with or serious failure can
occur. When could you consider ‘prepless’ veneers versus regular veneers? This program will discuss
a patient-centered protocol to decide just what preparation design would be appropriate for that
patient in your chair right now. This lecture will review fundamentals of smile design, tooth preparation,
provisionalization, lab communication and cementation. Learning Objectives:
• Diagnose and choose the best esthetic restoration for your patient
• Design appropriate preparation reduction that will help ensure success
• Review of current bonding protocols

Quality Quandary
The age old question of time versus quality (albeit a persistent one). An investigation into techniques
which propose to save time as well as provide for more precise control of quality.

Impression-less Custom Abutments
Using the iTero intra-oral scanner dentists can now scan implants and order custom abutments with finished
crowns. Simply remove the healing collar and insert the radio-opaque scanning jig instead of an impression
analog then, scan, verify and electronically order. See every impression clearly. Intra-oral scanners are
amazing to use with sedation dentistry; no more impressions on sedated patients that have difficulty
biting into the “goop.” Learn about the advantages of open architecture digital systems and available
manufacturing solutions that provide complete implant solutions, including surgical guides, custom healing
collars, custom abutments and finished restorations. Ongoing surgical guide software demo at booth 205:
Provide flapless implant surgery to your patients – less pain, less risk, faster recovery. Affordable surgical
guides on partial or fully edentulous cases, using a wide variety of implant platforms that provide dental
excellence to more patients.
Jonathan Mursic, RDT is the President of 5 Axis Dental Design and has worked in the dental industry
for 30 years; 10 of those years using CAD/CAM. He has lectured and taught hands-on courses across North
America, Europe and Asia. He dedicated the last two years as a dental CAD/CAM technical manager in the
US, doing extensive R&D and software development on multiple CAD/CAM systems. He installed the TDS
system in his CAD/CAM milling center, in Whitby Ontario. This 5 axis system was developed by one of the
world’s largest manufacturers and is setting a world standard for dental CAD/CAM excellence.
