MARCH—APRIL 2015—PART 1
Editor: Doris Robinson, National Director
FROM THE OFFICE
Hello Everyone,
We have an announcement. Starting APRIL 10th, Jennifer Bergin, NC Youth Leader will be heading
up the Showmanship Points archives for our members. Mrs. Bergin will be posting all of the points from the
show reports and will be mailing out your achievement pins and patches. I can’t thank her enough for taking on this time consuming job for us. On page 3 of this section you will find your updated points for all
show reports we have received as of April 1st, 2015. If you have not received your pin or a well deserved
“advanced exhibitor” patch please get in touch with her. Jennifer will have all show reports and pertinent
records in her office. Her contact information is: Phone (910) 281-4771 Email: [email protected]
I know everyone is busy, busy, busy with hatching chicks, attending the spring shows. It’s a fun time
of year for all of us. I hope you have hatched lots of exhibition show birds to raise and start showing in the
fall when the fall show season starts. Be sure to keep the birds happy during the hot summer months so
they are in great show condition when you are ready to tackle the showrooms again. We all know they need
lots of “fresh” water so you should be changing that out everyday. Who wants to drink warm stale water?
You wouldn’t drink a glass of water that has been sitting and getting warm for a day or two would you? Why
should your birds be expected to? This is probably one of the most important things you can do this summer, keep the bird hydrated with lots of fresh water. Remember, they can’t take off those feathers and put
on something cooler. I always think of them as wearing a warm sweatshirt all summer. You know how hot
that would be.
I also want to nag again and remind you that this is YOUR newsletter. It’s supposed to be all about
our junior members. If you don’t send me any news…...no newsletter. Nobody want s to read about what’s
going on here in the national office. Talk about boring reading. ALSO, I’ve noticed that many of you and
your parents are just posting things about you and your birds on Facebook. 99% of our junior members
aren’t on facebook because it seems to be geared more to the adult population. So it stands to reason that
there are a lot of people that don’t know you are raising chicks to sell or show or even what you are showing
and how well your birds are doing in the showroom. You can share this information with our new members
as well as our established members by emailing me with your news. Members are interested. Take 10 minutes and send us your news.
Welcome aboard to our new YEPA partners, the RHODE ISLAND RED CLUB as our new breed club
partner and the TENNESSEE VALLEY POULTRY CLUB as a club partner. Both clubs are trying very hard to put
together a junior program.
Please send your news for the May newsletter by May 24th.
Until next time…………..Mrs. R.

COCHIN—HEAD AND COMB EDUCATION
Pictures & comments by Cochin breeder and APA-ABA Licensed Poultry Judge Tom Roebuck.
Left: Young Cockerel—
Pretty good head although
only four points on his comb.
Right: Good comb. His head
would look better if he had a
shorter distance from the tip
of his beak to the back of his
skull.
Left: I like the head on this
Self-Blue male. His fifth
point has that little extra
point on it, so I’ll fault him
for that and I’d like to see
the blade a tad shorter. All
in all a pretty good head for
a Cochin Bantam male.
Right: Young black male.
Pretty decent head and
comb.
Left: Decent comb but not
a great head. Beak is too
long and not enough skull
over eye.
He’s a bit crow-headed.
Right: Good head on this
Buff male but his comb,
although five pointed, it a
little too big.
Do you belong? Are you raising and showing BUCKEYES?

SPRINGTIME IN BUCKEYE COUNTRY
BUCKEYE Broody Hen owned by Chris Mccary.
Day 21 is today for Bantam Buckeye chicks under one
of my game hens. This one peeking out was already
dry. They probably started hatching last night. She had
8 eggs. She is not a hen you can just look under as she
will tear you up.
RHODE ISLAND RED CLUB OF AMERICA
FINDING THAT IDEAL COLUMBIAN
PATTERN ON A WING. It’s not that easy!
Picture by Thurman Main of the RIR Club.
It’s difficult to find the perfect wing color but this is a
fairly decent representative. A little more black is
needed.
Let’s Promote Your Breed Club!
We would like to invite all of our “breed club partners”
to share educational articles and stories about their junior members in each of our monthly newsletters.
