Cashless Tolling May 25, 2016 Cashless Tolling at the Delaware River Paving the Way for New I-95 Connection The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) changed its tolling system and configuration in southeastern Pennsylvania to help fund its I-95 Interchange Project. The new system includes a new toll, collected at a cashless tolling point, and a new mainline toll plaza to serve as the beginning/end to the ticket system further west called Neshaminy Falls. This new cashless tolling point assesses tolls as vehicles pass under an overhead gantry at highway speed for westboundtraffic only just after crossing the Delaware River. Customers pay using E-ZPass or the new PA Turnpike TOLL BY PLATE program for those who usually pay with cash. The new tolling point is part of the $1.4 billion PA Turnpike/Interstate 95 (I-95) Interchange Project that will directly connect the Pennsylvania Turnpike and I-95, as required by federal legislation to make I-95 continuous from Maine to Florida. Toll plaza facilities previously located at the southeastern end of the Turnpike at the Delaware River Bridge (milepost 359) and the Delaware Valley/U.S. Route 13 Interchange (Exit 358) have been removed. Exit 358 remains open to traffic with no toll. The new Neshaminy Falls Toll Plaza (#353) is located just east of the Bensalem Interchange (#351) and replaces the Delaware River Bridge Toll Plaza as the new beginning/end of the PA Turnpike’s ticket-based system. Cash customers need to stop to pick up a ticket (westbound) or pay their toll (eastbound) at this new mainline toll plaza. E-ZPass customers enjoy the convenience of traveling at highway speed through Express Lanes at this location. A second cashless tolling project is anticipated to be launched on the Beaver Valley Expressway (BVE), the tolled portion of I-376, in western PA in April 2017. Although the BVE project will be cashless, there are some differences including traffic volume, type of existing facilities and the number of cash customers. These contrasting projects will allow the PA Turnpike to continue evaluating the safety and efficiency of cashless tolling without layoffs of full-time employees.
