About Bloomsburg
Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education,
is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its
development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and
finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and
career education.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United
States, and excellence, ranging from its 12 NCAA championships to its international
reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the
faculty and staff.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania,
creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a
lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and
activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students
through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life
experience and distance learning courses on public television.
The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of
about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus,
and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September.
More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the
Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport,
Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours
from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
Enrollment— Total enrollment is over
8,040, with an average incoming SAT
of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25
percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven
applicants and has a four-year retention
rate significantly higher than the national
average. About 60 percent are women
and 10 percent are non-traditional. About
90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are
quickly placed in their chosen fields.
Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers
63 baccalaureate degrees,18 master’s
degrees and a joint doctoral degree in
elementary education in cooperation with
Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Faculty— With approximately 1,000
employees, Bloomsburg University has
383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom
hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of
whom are tenured. The staff is organized
into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University
Advancement. Governance is through the
State System of Higher Education’s Board
of Governors and through the university’s
Council of Trustees.
Cost—About $6,000 per semester for
Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees,
typical room and meal plans), $9,800 for
non-residents.
Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all
students receive some form of financial
aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per
year.
School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have
been maroon and gold since the 1920s.
In the early 1930s, the Husky became
the school mascot when a dog owned by
a faculty member accompanied Adm.
Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the
South Pole.

Head Coach John Sanow
John
Sanow comes
to Bloomsburg
after serving as
an assistant coach
at the University
of Vermont,
a Division I
program, last
year. Overall,
Sanow brings 18 years of experience
to Bloomsburg University with
previous coaching stops at Division
II schools Gannon University and
Pitt-Johnstown. He also spent 11 years
as an assistant coach at Division I St.
Francis of Pennsylvania.
A native of Windber, Pa. who
is well connected in basketball in
the East, Sanow is a 1987 graduate
of Indiana (Pa.) University. After
transferring from Clarion University in
1984, he led IUP in scoring and was a
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
All-Conference First Team selection in
1986. He also set numerous three-point
shooting records for the Indians.
At Vermont last season he was
part of a new coaching staff the led the
least-experienced team in the nation
in D-I (no seniors, two, juniors, five
sophomores and seven freshmen)
to the America East Championship
game for the fourth straight season.
The sixth-seeded Catamounts (13-17,
7-9 America East) topped #3 Boston
University and #2 Binghamton before
falling at top-seeded Albany in the title
game.
4
While at St. Francis (Pa.), he
was an integral part of the Red
Flash winning the 1991 Northeast
Conference title and a trip to
the NCAA Men’s Basketball
Championship. In 1992 he also was
an assistant coach for the Panama
Men’s Olympic Team in its attempt
to qualify for the Summer Olympics
in Barcelona. While at St. Francis he
coached Mike Iuzzolino, who went on
to the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks.
Sanow becomes the 21st coach
in what will be the 105th season
of Bloomsburg University men’s
basketball competition.
John Sanow with captains
Billy Bryan (L) and Matt Jefferson
Assistant Coach Tae Norwood
Tae
Norwood begins
his second year
as assistant
men’s basketball
coach.
Norwood came
to Bloomsburg
after spending a
season at Milligan (TN) College as an
assistant coach, intramural director
and assistant resident director. Prior
to coaching at Milligan, Norwood was
an administrative assistant at Georgia
Southern University while earning his
master’s degree in Kinesiology with an
emphasis in Coaching.
A 2000 graduate of Green
Mountain College (GMC), Norwood
played four years on the men’s
basketball team, where he was named
to the All-Conference team in 1999
and 2000. A three-year starter at GMC,
Norwood starred on three conference
championship teams and made three
trips to the NAIA national tournament.
During his time at Green
Mountain he was instrumental in the
team recording a conference record of
53-4. He is currently the all-time career
leader in assists and steals at Green
Mountain.

2006-07 Season Preview
FRONTCOURT
Returning to the Huskies this
year will be senior all-conference
selections, Billy Bryan and Matt
Jefferson. Jefferson, a first-team
selection, and Bryan, a secondteam selection, both ranked in the
top 20 in the PSAC in scoring and
rebounding last season and will be
the Huskies main threats again this
season.
Senior Brian Holsey, one of the
Huskies top shot blockers from a
year ago, returns as well as juniors
Ernest Cherry and Jeremiah Long.
Cherry is a tough defender who
played a key role last year until an
injury ended his season. Long saw
significant time at center last year
and has improved his game over the
summer.
Other returnees include Bryson
Mills and Jaren Burdine. Mills is
working hard to improve his
game and will look to contribute
as well. Burdine, returns after
sitting out the 2005-06 season
and will also look to be a
presence in the front court.
Newcomers Niko Traykov,
Marko Vucajnk, and John
Allen will also make an
impact in the frontcourt.
Traykov, a transfer from St.
Francis (NY) and Vucajnk,
a 6-11 transfer from Marist,
will bring some Division I
experience to the team.
Chemistry. It is an aspect
that is often overlooked when
putting together a team, but new
head coach John Sanow believes
it will be the key component to
a successful season. “We need
to get our new guys acclimated
with the guys that have been here
in the past”, said Sanow. “We
must develop a belief and trust in
each other, because a team that is
together can accomplish special
things.”
Sanow, who comes to
Bloomsburg after serving as a
long-time assistant, most recently
at Vermont, brings a new attitude
and optimism to the program.
Sanow feels with a strong nucleus
of returning players and a solid
group of newcomers this team
can return to the top of the PSAC
again.
“The strength of our team
is our depth,” added Sanow.
“We have some quality
individuals at every
position. We’re
looking for each of
those guys to make
an impact and a
contribution on this
team.” In addition, the
Huskies will also have a
very experienced roster
that is loaded with upper
classmen.
6
2006-07 Season Preview
said Sanow. “The PSAC East
should be wide open. Several
of the top teams lost their best
players so a lot of teams have
a chance to make the playoffs.
We feel if we come together
as a group and continue
to improve offensively
and defensively then
we will have a good
chance of being
one of those top
four teams. Once you
get into the playoffs,
anything can happen.”
In order to prepare
for the PSAC East games, the
Huskies will have some tough
non-conference games against
teams such as Seton Hill and
Pitt-Johnstown, as well as some
difficult PSAC West games against
Shippensburg and Edinboro. Last
season, both Edinboro
and Shippensburg
advanced to the
NCAA Tournament,
while Pitt-Johnstown
finished with 21 wins.
“I’m very
excited,” said Sanow
when asked about
beginning his first year
as head coach. “It’s a
great opportunity for me
at Bloomsburg. I’m really
looking forward to getting the
season started.”
BACKCOURT
Point guard Andrew Jerry
will be a key to the Huskies
success. Jerry played
in only four games
last season before
suffering an ankle
injury, but is back to full
health this year. He has
excellent ball-handling
skills and will make
everyone around him
better.
Also returning will
be Mike Cheatle, who
emerged as the Huskies
main threat from the outside last
season. Cheatle already ranks
seventh all-time in three-pointers
made (106) at Bloomsburg after
just two seasons. Buddy Rose,
who was one of the Huskies top
scorers a year ago, returns as well.
Two transfers, Nick Jones, from
St. Francis (NY) and Jon DeJesus,
from Lackawanna College, will
also join the backcourt this year
and will make a difference
right away.
OVERALL
“Our goal is to
get better with every
practice and with every
game. If we do that, we
feel by the end of the
year we will be in
position to get into
the PSAC playoffs,”

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with 55 years of organized competition,
has established itself as one of the most respected NCAA Division II athletic conferences.
In its history the PSAC has laid claim to 37 NCAA team champions and 204 individual
title winners, giving credence to its fine athletic tradition. The conference has prospered
on the national level in recent years, as it annually has close to one-third of its teams
participating in NCAA postseason competition. The PSAC also distinguishes itself as the
second largest Division II conference in terms of sports sponsorship, awarding titles for 22
different sports.
While proud of its athletic success, the league has also thrived in an academic sense.
The number of student-athletes designated by the conference as “Scholar-Athletes” - those
who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better - has increased
every year since that standard was adopted in 1995-96. The impressive number of yearly
designees reached 1,579 in 2005-06, 213 more than the previous year. Furthermore, the
most recent figure is nearly double the total of those in the mid-1990s.
The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering
men’s athletic programs within the 14 state teachers colleges in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to the interest and growth of women’s athletics, the conference
was restructured to provide for women’s programs.
From its inception, each conference member selected its own competitive division within
the NCAA. In 1980, however, the presidents voted to reclassify the entire conference to
Division II. Although all 14 institutions are members of NCAA Division II, eight schools
have also elected to compete at the Division I level in select sports.
In 1983, all member institutions were granted university status as a result of
Legislative Act 188, which formed Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The
system now enrolls in excess of 107,000 students. The alumni of the State System is over
600,000, which includes roughly 405,000 Pennsylvanians.
One of the largest conferences in the nation, the PSAC is governed by the presidents of
the 14 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistants and an intern at its
headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Nelson Field House
The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as
home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility has all the necessary
ingredients as it holds a 2,000-seat arena for all home basketball and wrestling events, an indoor track, two tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and two handball/racquetball
courts. The building has classrooms and offices for use by the health/physical education
and athletic staffs. Nelson Field House also houses the wrestling practice room, which is a
fully padded area located on the second floor. A totally equipped Nautilus room adds to the
strength and conditioning area of the program, and Nelson Field House also offers a training
room staffed by two full-time physical trainers and no less than 12 student assistants. Also
located in the facility is an equipment manager who handles the needs of Bloomsburg’s 18
varsity athletic teams.
The Huskies would like to thank Patrick Long, General Manager of
Zeisloft Brothers Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep in Danville,
for his continued support of the program
