GREATNESS
It has been said that ‘To be inspired is great,
to inspire is incredible.’ And that is the aim of
FILEX 2015. Through the hundreds of sessions
and presenters you can choose from over the
convention weekend, we aim to inspire you to
greatness, so that you, in turn, can inspire your
clients, your members and everyone whose lives
you touch to become not only good, but great
versions of themselves. As Mark Twain once
wrote, ‘Really great people make you feel that you,
too, can become great’.
Of course, to enable this you need a great convention
program, and we’ve certainly got that for you. With
a stellar line-up of presenters, including industry
heavyweights Dr Joanna McMillan, Thomas
Plummer, Helen Vanderburg, Todd Durkin and Lisa
Wheeler, you’ll find inspiration and unparalleled
industry knowledge at every turn. This year, in our
own ongoing quest for improvement, we’ve made a
few changes to deliver our greatest event yet.
}The brand new Group Training strand is packed
with ideas and practical know-how.
}This brochure has been streamlined, with easyto-reference session descriptions and presenter
biographies now online at FILEX.com.au
}Plus, an extra session timeslot on Sunday means
you can fit even more learning into your FILEX
experience.
By attending FILEX you place yourself among the
industry’s leaders, those whose efforts towards
professional development equip them with the
skills and motivation to not only become great, but
to inspire greatness in others.
I look forward to welcoming you to FILEX 2015.
}FILEX 2015 kicks off with Opening Plenary

FRIDAY 10 APRIL
9:45 to 11:30am
Your best YOU. Inspiring
greatness in you and others!
BRUCE SULLIVAN
Life is demanding. The pressures of constant change and increasing
expectations in all areas of work and life can take their toll on even the most
positive and resilient individuals. Enthusiasm can quickly turn to cynicism,
which can negatively affect health, careers and relationships. It doesn’t have
to be this way.
Be prepared to laugh and learn as Bruce guides you through an educational
and highly entertaining journey. You’ll start your FILEX on a high as you
discover practical and proven ways to build your resilience, decrease your
stress, reclaim your energy and inspire greatness in yourself and in others.

The Bodyweight Athlete Workshop
ViPR for ALL Group Training
Presented by Mike Fitch
Presented by Matt Truscott
Explore skills-based, progressive bodyweight training, and learn how to use
bodyweight and gravity to manipulate leverage to achieve impressive moves.
This highly interactive workshop focuses on three of the ‘big’ bodyweight
training moves: the Pistol Squat, the Single-Arm Push-Up, and the HandStand Push-Up. Learn how to assess clients’ thresholds and their ability to
perform the moves, identify compensations and limiting factors, and then
apply the appropriate regressions and progressions. With an emphasis on
finding individual skill thresholds, you’ll take home the know-how to safely
apply bodyweight training techniques to clients of all abilities, from beginner
to advanced.
Training clients of varying abilities in one session doesn’t need to involve
compromise. Discover how to become better at building everyone up without
leaving anyone behind, using the ViPR training tool. Looking at how ViPR
can be used to train both large and small groups, Matt teaches you how
to incorporate personal challenges and games into training sessions, and
explores the power of rhythm/timing and athletically inspired movements.
Learn the safety considerations, class management strategies and general
terminology developed for ViPR Group Fitness in this 360° approach to group
training.

BUSINESS SUMMIT THURSDAY 9 APRIL
The FILEX Business Summit is your opportunity to take inspiration from world-leading international and local business experts, as they
share proven techniques to strengthen your leadership skills and take your fitness operations up a gear.
Americans are idiots… and we’re sending everything
we know to Australia!
Thomas Plummer
Everyone in the fitness business is seeking the perfect system
to drive sales or the perfect pricing special that’s irresistible to
consumers. But constantly chasing new and shiny industry trends
can lead us to ignore the fundamental – and often ugly – side of
business where the good, but not sexy, rules of long-term success
live. Thomas explores five trends that will come, go, and leave a
path of destruction in the industry. Learn what they mean to your
business, and discover how to gain a competitive edge for the
decade of change ahead.
Retention – There is no middle ground
Paul Brown
In today’s highly competitive fitness marketplace consumers refuse to
pay to be ignored. Paul (aka ‘Mr Retention’) will guide you through an
in-depth examination of the most dominant business models around
the world, with a focus on their service offerings and how they relate
to their price points. Discover how a profit and loss analysis, as well
as member turnover and ultimate brand value will put a huge question
mark over current practices, such as using your PT department to onboard your most valuable asset – your new members.
Talking about the generations
Avril Henry
To maximise the success of your fitness business you need to know
how to cater to different generations. Avril provides an overview
of the expectations and attitudes of Baby Boomers, Generation X
and Generation Y in relation to loyalty, commitment, family, work/
life balance and career. Discover how each generation’s views on
these topics have been shaped by different political, historical,
economic and social events in their formative years, and learn how
to work with generational preferences regarding communication
and conflict resolution.
The neuroscience of leadership
Paul Taylor
Prepare to change the way you think about thinking! In this stimulating
session Paul blends cutting-edge neuroscience, physiology and
psychology as he reveals how to access your true potential for
leadership, by unlocking the power of the human mind with The Big 5.
You’ll learn how to ‘know thyself’, thrive under pressure, make effective
decisions, engage and influence others, and drive change. Discover
the information and tools to develop physical, emotional and cognitive
resilience, and successfully navigate the challenges of leadership in
modern organisations.
Taking on the “big boys” and winning!
Peter Thurin
With a background in the highly competitive pharmacy industry,
Peter draws on his two decades of experience taking on the ‘big
boys’ and winning, to reveal how to differentiate your business from
your competitors. Discover how, by placing a huge focus on people
excellence, you can take every aspect of your business from routine
to remarkable. Whether you run a single club or a multi-site operation,
you’ll be energised and inspired to ‘get into the game’ and give the big
players a run for their money.

Do you only use the traditional one-on-one training model for your PT
business? Want to leverage your time and make more money without
compromising the quality of your training? You can. In this dynamic
session Rick, whose club delivers over 50,000 Small Group Training
(SGT) sessions annually, explores every facet of building, communicating

Lisa Wheeler
Despite best intentions our clients and participants can’t
always make it to training, so to help them stay on track
when they’re not with you, you can teach them a simple
yet challenging workout that can be done anywhere,
anytime without any equipment. In this session you’ll
learn a series of bodyweight exercises, with progressions
and regressions, that hit all major muscles groups and
that work the body in an integrated way, to help build
usable strength and assist weight management.

Optimal training strategies F P
Claire Norgate, Tony Boutagy

In the pursuit of better performance, personal
trainers constantly look for the optimal methods
of making clients look, feel and move better.
But are we confusing the needs of our weekend
warriors with those of experienced athletes, and
pushing them beyond the boundaries of safe
and effective prescription and progression? Join
Claire, Tony and Mark as they explore the role of
personal trainer versus coach in search of the
best training strategies for the ‘everyday’ client.

bodyweight training WS P
Mike Fitch
Accumulative and regressive training are
important techniques for progressing a skillsbased bodyweight training program. Because
more advanced bodyweight exercise places a
higher emphasis on maximal strength, balance,
and coordinating movements, it is important to
prepare the body for increased neuromuscular
and neural loads. Join Mike as he explains how
and why these techniques work, and explains how
to incorporate them into an effective skills-based,
progressive bodyweight training program.
