RRYC Represented at Tred Avon YC Sail-In
By Coleman Brydon, Cruise Leader
Photos by Sheila & Steve Zukor and Sue Springett
TredAvon Sail-In was the perfect destination for an autumn cruise.
On Tuesday, October 15, six RRYC boats
set out to attend a Sail-In at the Tred Avon Yacht
Club in Oxford, MD. Well, actually six boats were
SUPPOSED to set off, but strong winds from the
northeast and three-to-five foot waves in the bay
caused four boats to take the built-in lay-day and
leave on Wednesday. Those bold sailors who left
were Steve & Sheila Zukor on Wetted Bliss, and
Charles & Sue Springett on Ariel. The Zukors,
coming from the Corrotoman River were beat up,
but made it to Mill Creek (in seven hours). Ariel
had to come only from Tabbs Creek and bashed
their way to Reedville. Wednesday saw light winds
from the north and calmer seas. Dave Hutchison on

Despite the horrible weather, mark boats’ GPS failing, committee
boat mechanical problems and an MIA Coast Guard Auxiliary
due to government shut down; the RRYC/Irvington’s Hospice
Turkey Shoot Regatta was safe and a huge success. We had close
to 100 boats register to race in nine fleets and two divisions, and
provided two different courses on Saturday and set a third pursuit
race course on Sunday. This would not have happened without the
leadership of RRYC HTSR Committee Chairs; Vice Commodore
Tom Chapman, Fleet Captain Dwight Timm and the RRYC
volunteers who helped on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I would
also like to thank John McConnico, the visionary behind the
HTSR, for giving us the opportunity and trusting RRYC to take on
such a huge event to benefit the community, Riverside Hospice,
Northern Neck Hospice and their many patients. That being said;
officially we look forward to being the HTSR Yacht Club host in
2014 (October 3, 4 & 5).
Please remember the Annual Meeting and Awards on Saturday,
November 16 @ 16:00. This is a different time than the usual
monthly social, so mark your calendars.
From the 2013 RRYC Flag Officers and Board of Directors, have
a great Thanksgiving holiday!!

November’s Boating Safety Tip:
Accident Reporting
Federal law requires the operator – or owner, if the operator
is deceased or unable to make the report – to file a boating
accident report with the State reporting authority when, as a
result of an occurrence that involves a boat or its equipment:
• A person dies
• A person disappears from the vessel under circumstances
that indicate death or injury
• A person is injured and requires medical treatment beyond
first aid
• Damage to vessels and other property totals $2,000 (lower
amounts in some states and territories) or more
• The boat is destroyed.

Tred Avon Yacht Club Sail-In
(continued from page 1)
Menabilly and Terry & Coleman
Brydon on Inspiration left from
RRYC and motor sailed to Tangier Island. They were joined by
Ted Kvell on Bottlenose. Grace
Ann & Frank Miller, on Windblown, left from the Corrotoman,
but opted to proceed directly to
Solomon’s Island to catch up
with Ariel and Wetted Bliss. Two
days into the cruise and we now
had an A and a B group. The situation played out like an Intelos
commercial: The A group drank
cheap drinks and enjoyed eight
dollar taco night at the Solomon’s
Island Yacht Club. The B group
found that every restaurant save
one in Tangier was closed. The
one that was open was not the
best. The A group had a pleasant 34 mile sail to Oxford to look
forward to. The B group had a 66
mile slog to catch up.
Thursday, we were blessed
with south winds. The B group
left shortly after dawn and lucked
into a strong northerly tidal current that we rode until 16:00. This
combination of wind and current
up the east side of the bay gave
us a terrific boost in speed over
ground. Inspiration made it to
Oxford Boat Yard by 17:30 (nine
hours!) in time for cocktails. Me-
nabilly and Bottlenose opted to
anchor out in the Strand and dinghy to shore.
Friday and Saturday, we
walked over to the Tred Avon
Yacht Club and met our host,
Sandy King. Sandy was truly the
“hostess with the mostest.” She
ferried various members of
RRYC to St. Michaels and
Easton, provided transportation between marinas and the
club, hosted dinners Friday and
Saturday night, and arranged a
professional walking tour of Oxford on Saturday morning. Evidently, this Sail-In is an annual
October event, but RRYC had not
been invited in the past. Other
clubs participating were Annapolis Yacht Club and Chesapeake
Sailing Association, and Gibson
Island YS (who backed out at
the last minute). Friday night’s
dinner was casual in their upstairs lounge and included their
flag lowering ceremony and gun
salute. Saturday was a formal
affair with blazers and assigned
tables in their downstairs dining
room. RRYC members enjoyed
the interaction with other club’s
members (Most frequently asked
question: Where is RRYC?) .
Friendships were formed, boat
cards exchanged, and a delicious
dinner of crab cakes and Filet Mignon was enjoyed by all.
Sunday, the group departed
for points south. The morning winds were strong from
the northwest, and sailors contemplated a direct run down to
Reedville. Unfortunately, when
we got out to the bay, the winds
died. Four boats went to Solomon’s, while the intrepid Menabilly and Bottlenose pushed on
to the Little Wicomico. Readers
of the Guide to the Chesapeake
are aware of dire warnings about
the dangers of going into the
Little Wicomico, but Ted talked
Dave into trying it. No one ran
aground going through the narrow entrance and they spent an
uneventful night. The remaining
group enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at the SIYC and departed
Monday morning for home ports.
Windblown and Wetted Bliss
spent Monday night at RRYC,
so we could have Monday dinner and Tuesday breakfast with
Inspiration, before heading to
their Corrotoman Eastern Branch
home docks. All in all, this was a
delightful cruise.
Typhoons Lash Rappahannock
By Chuck Carmichael, Typhoon Fleet Captain
We had 23 Typhoons registered in this year’s blustery Turkey Shoot Regatta, held in the midst of what
the meteorologists called a parked Northeaster, but those in the know called it a Typhoon event - heavy
winds, heavier gusts, intermittent rain and heavy seas, perfect Typhoon conditions. Of the 23 Typhoons
registered, 19 competed Saturday, and as the wind gusted in excess of 20 knots on Sunday, of the 42 boats
that finished, nine were from our Typhoon Fleet. The father and son team of Ned and Branch Crockett
were first overall, the Ron Mihills team took second, and Sissy Crowther and Arabella Denvir took third.

Typhoons
(continued from page 3)
We have now completed our 2013 Season. We had a total of 23 Typhoons competing this Fall with six
nights of racing and 16 total races. The Anthem team of father and son Ron and Brent Mihills took first
overall. The Ladybug team of brothers Ned and Stan Crockett took home the second, and the Creampuff
team of husband and wife Chuck and Barie Carmichael took third. On the final night of racing, we had
cameo performances by Bo Bragg who just launched Camilleon for the Turkey Shoot sailed her to a firstplace finish in Race One. Our other cameo performance was Mosby West and Debbie Cycotte who, after
working on Race Committee all Fall, launched Goldfish and sailed her to a first-place finish in Race Two.
Honorable mention goes to single-hander George Kuper, who had a personal best sailing Ty Affair to a
third-place finish in Race One.
We had great Race Committees all season with Scott Vail alternating with Mosby West and Debbie
Cycotte. We thank them and Tom Blencowe who ran our chase boat all season. It should be noted that Tom
took time away from chase boating to sail his Typhoon Senior to a second-place finish in division eight in
the Turkey Shoot. We thank them all for their considerable contributions to our Typhoon program.
Accolades must also go to our Fleet Social Director, Kinnet Ehring, who again organized and directed
our post-race festivities. They were great and appreciated by the fleet. Thanks also to all of the Typhoon
Shore Parties who provided food for our post-race dinners.
Last but not least, following a questionnaire to the fleet, we have revised our program for 2014. We
plan on sailing two fleets, an A fleet for the experienced racers and a B fleet for our casual racers, we will
sail a six-race Spring Series culminating with the 2014 Typhoon Nationals to be held on June 6, 7 & 8. Our
six-week Fall Series will conclude with the Turkey Shoot Regatta. Gone is our Sunday Program which is
being replaced with a Social Saturday Series on RRYC Social Saturdays. The plan is to add some social
racing to the Club’s Social Saturdays. There is going to be a lot of Typhooning around next year, and if you
don’t already have a Typhoon, get one.
Junior Fall Series

Daniel Resio leads Hannah Richardson to the finish line.
The RRYC Junior’s had a great Fall Sailing Series. The weekends of Aug 25, Sep
8 and 15 had our sailors out in mostly great
conditions with one day of light air. Seven
races were completed with 4 different fleets,
Optimists, Sunfish, Laser Radial, and a Laser. The competition among the sailors was
very tight.
Alex Resio finished first in the Optis,
followed by Jon Vail, Rachel Clark, and Michael Mason. Sabina German finished first
in the Sunfish just barely ahead of her sister
Sophie German. Daniel Resio finished first
in the Laser Radial with Hannah Richardson
just behind. Corey Jamison took Laser Full
honors.

ARRGGGHHH!!! Pirates on Carter Creek!

band of pirates
in a hunt for
treasure.

German
On September 29 fourteen scalawags took to Carter Creek looking for a lost treasure. After eating
some pirate grub, getting on-land pirate training, listening to some bad pirate jokes, and learning how to
walk a plank, the assorted band of young sailors took to the water on three Sunfish, one Flying Junior, and
one Laser Bahia. With the first clue in hand, they explored the creek working together as a group, to find
the next clue which led to the next, and so on. The merry band of scalawags spent the day sailing all over
the Creek. Finally, the last clue led them to the lost treasure. The ruthless group of sailors then practiced
their sailing skills including boarding other boats and some man-overboard drills. Finally, with the treasure recovered and returned to the Great Pirate Resio, each sailor was rewarded with their own choice of
treasure.
Let it be known to all that the following have been promoted from general scalawag to pirate apprentice: Rachel Clark, Ky Colburn, Sabina German, Sophie German, Corey Jamison, John Thomas Mason,
Michael Mason, Abbey Ouelette, Alex Rafetto, Alex Resio, Daniel Resio, Mikala Reynolds, John Vail,
and Thomas Wilson. Consider yourself warned!
Pay attention to next year’s calendar for more Adventure Day sailing opportunities.
Reese & Boyd Bragg invited to Hospice Cup Team Race
By Bo Bragg
Boyd Bragg was invited to the Hospice Cup Team Race in Annapolis for the second straight year,
based on his CBYRA points standing on the Bay. This year his younger sister, Reese, was invited too. The
four-person teams raced in strong winds of 15+ knots on September 21. Reese’s team finished second
overall and Boyd’s team finished third. The Hospice Cup is the largest charity fundraising sailing regatta
for hospice programs throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. Six local hospice

centers benefited from the Hospice
Cup, including Hospice of the Chesapeake, Gilchrist Hospice, and Hospice
of Queen Anne’s.
The very next weekend, Boyd &
Reese traveled to Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, NY
for the USODA Atlantic Coast Championship where Boyd qualified for the
2014 Team Trials to be held in March at
Stamford Yacht Club. Reese finished
mid-fleet and is working towards her
goal of team trial qualifying. Boyd & Reese were joined by Alex
Resio and John Vail the weekend of
October 26 and 27 in Annapolis for the
AYC Halloween Howl Regatta. This is
a 2013 CBYRA high points event.
Cape Dory S.O.A. Visit RRYC
By Jack Chamberlain
A dozen Cape Dory sailors visited RRYC overnight Oct. 1-2 during a Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association cruise of the southern Chesapeake Bay. They were impressed. The big “Welcome to Rappahannock River Yacht Club” banner across the porch greeted the visitors. “No wonder they call this ‘A proper yacht club,’” said Al Lawton, founder of CDSOA more than two
decades ago. “Any memberships available?”
No one mentioned that the banner was hung to greet Hospice Turkey Shoot racers the following week,
so it served double duty.
The cruise was lead by RRYC board
member Mitchell Bober, a Cape Dory
sailor and CDSOA member for two
decades. During the cruise, Michell’s CD
36 Starview was laid up at Ampro boatyard with unexpected mechanical problems. So Jo Chamberlain arranged the
last-minute visit with Club manager Kent
White, who assigned slips to the Chamberlain’s CD 33 Maggie Rose and three
visiting vessels. The pleasant sunny day was capped
off with a pot-luck supper on the deck and

a beautiful sunset. The three visiting vessels headed north to the Great Wicomoco

purchase of a Cape Dory Typhoon.
From the Galley
By Craig Akers, Social Chair
The weather did not cooperate for the October oyster roast, but the membership hardly noticed. All
hands were happy on the porch with their fill of oysters fixed four different ways, plus spicy tater tots
seasoned with Old Bay, a tangy Cole slaw, a very “corny” corn pudding, and a scrumptious homemade
mixed-berry cobbler ala mode for dessert. The crowd was small due to competition with a number of
other events in the area, but everybody present had a GREAT time.
Thanks to all of those who made this a HUGE success. It was an event with a LOT of moving parts
and required a LOT of effort. Several people told Jan and me that it was the best social they have EVER
attended (and it even rained). The evening started off with some terrific appetizers provided by Kathy &
Jim Bearden, Eve & Bob German, Bev & Brian Hart, Charlotte & Jim Schmidt, and Jan & me.
Special thanks to Carl & Debi Isbrandtsen for picking up the straw; Harry & Jane Wells for picking
up the oysters and lending us the fryer, steamer, and a couple of knives; Jim & Pam Ward for lending us
their grill; and Kate Raffetto, Pete Clay, and Jim Ward for providing fire pits; and Jim Schmidt for running
pickup and delivery services; as well as Harry Wells and Fran Westbrook for providing me with invaluable guidance on the logistics for the evening.
Thanks also to the morning kitchen crew of Jan Akers, Carl & Debi Isbrandtsen, Clark Meader, Jim
Schmidt, and Katya Spicuzza for all your help slicing, dicing, and mixing. And let’s not forget Kathy
Bearden and Kate Raffetto who set the tables with all the “necessaries” for the rest of us to eat. You guys
put together a wonderful evening for the members.
Last but not least, thanks to the crew who helped serve during the social; Carl Isbrandtsen, Jim Schmidt,
and Jim Ward who kept the steamer and grill going, and helped out with the shucking; Pam Ward who
worked at the fryer in the kitchen; and Jim Bearden and Jan Akers for passing the fried oysters.
Join us in November for the Annual Meeting. The fare will be cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres, and
the cost is $10 per person for the reception. While the Annual Meeting is open to all members, you must
still make reservations for the reception after the meeting. We hope to see you there. Make your reservations in the usual way, via email to [email protected], no later than Sunday, November 10.
