See breakout rooms Movement and fitness have always been important parts of Native communities. Presenters will provide a cultural perspective to most of the activities you will be participating in. Each workshop will be presented three times throughout the morning so you can try three different activities. q Toka: O’odham Game for Women Meeting Room 1 This workshop will provide historical information on this sport that teaches teamwork, physical agility and cultural traditions. Participants will learn about the games rules and have the opportunity to practice hitting the puck with the mesquite toka stick. q Basketball Meeting Room 2 Participants will do practice drills and get pointers for developing their skills in this competitive sport. q Walking Participants will hear oral traditions based on walking and discuss the importance of walking to tribal people throughout history. 6 Meeting Room 6 2 0 1 6 N a t i o n a l U N I T Y C o n f e r e n c e | J u l y 2 2 - 2 6 , 2 0 1 6 | O k l a h o m a C i t y, O k l a h o m a | C e l e b r a t i n g 4 0 Ye a r s o f U N I T Y Event Location q Hoop Dance Meeting Room 5 Many say the origins of Hoop Dance as we see it performed today lie in the artistic expression of renowned dancer Tony Whitecloud from Taos Pueblo, NM. Today this expressive art form is also a competitive sport. World champion hoop dancers will lead participants in creating their own unique style of hoop dancing by learning basic moves. q Jingle Dress Participants will learn about the oral history behind the development of the Jingle Dress dance as a ceremonial prayer dance to a competitive dance in the pow wow arena. Meeting Room 9 q Women’s Fancy Participants will learn about the evolution of the women’s fancy dance style of pow wow dancing and practice basic steps before advancing to more complex routines. Meeting Room 10 q Tahitian Meeting Room 11 This class will share the history of traditional dance of the women of the Tahitian Islands in the South Pacific. Learn the basics of this highly disciplined form of dance and movement. q Zumba Participants will try their hand at this high-energy fitness dance exercise, accompanied by various forms of Latino music. q Alaska Native Games Meeting Room 14 Participants will learn about the Eskimo Olympics and the games Native Alaskans play to keep in shape for long and grueling hunting expeditions. q Native Alaskan Snowshoe and Stretch Exercises Participants will learn how Native Alaska snowshoes are made before they learn how to get physically prepared for snowshoeing in the cold country. q Trailrunning Meeting Room 17 This workshop will point out tips for getting in shape for trail running, both at high and medium elevations. q Men’s Fancy Dance Participants will learn about the evolution of the men’s fancy dance style of pow wow dancing and practice basic steps before advancing to more complex routines. 7 Meeting Room 12 Meeting Room 15 Meeting Room 16 DAY 2 | July 23 Time : UNITYinc76 Time : UNITYinc #UNITYOKC2016 #UNITY40th #ChangingLivesSince1976 DAY 2 | July 23 Event Location q Smoke Dancing Participants will hear the oral histories of this high energy, fast stepping dance that is an integral part of the northeastern tribal peoples. Meeting Room 18 q Stretching Meeting Room 7 Take some time to relax and learn about how our muscles work and how you can use these exercises to remain flexible and ready for more strenuous exercises. q Canoeing/Rowing Learn about the great rowing tradition of the Northwest coastal tribal communities and practice exercises that will leave you ready to join a rowing team in your next race! Meeting Room 21 q Traditional Game This workshop will feature the games of double ball and how it is played. You will also do some short workouts that help get you in shape to play this fun, high paced game.
