Freezing temperatures and heavy wind and rain as April progressed allowed just enough time to prepare for season kickoff events that took place over this weekend with the Angerman family. Each year this family tradition is sponsored by Angerman’s Inc. and Outlet Store, owned and operated by Jeff and Dawn Angerman. The mild winter did very little to change the golf course this year, and as spring has progressed golfing conditions are now prime. Grounds crew, volunteers and board members came together to change four panels of driving range netting. The golf club board of directors will decide when the remaining panels of netting will be installed. Seasonal youth events have begun on the driving range with Jim Brook’s High School Golf Club. The group of eleven meet every Monday and Wednesday between 3:45-5:00pm for five weeks, from April 21-May 21. The Wrangell High School Golf Club Championship will be May 21, followed by a pizza party. Graduates of the HS Golf Club receive a club membership and season pass with special golf privileges. The summer schedule of events at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course is increasing with new tournament sponsors, and extra golf fundraising events. New to the schedule this year is the Wrangell Fourth of July Royalty Candidates, Kira Torvend and Robyn Booker, who will be sponsoring a Friday evening nine-hole best shot on June 27th. Smitty’s Carpet Service is also new to the tournament schedule this year. Smitty’s Carpet Service is owned and operated by the President of the Wrangell Golf Club, Brian Smith. Also new to the tournament schedule this year is the Salty Dog Boat Rally. This year is the first time the power boat fleet will be racing the inside passage to Southeast Alaska from Washington state. The Salty Dog’s golf tournament will be Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 3:00pm. Joining in at the tournament ceremonies during our backyard barbeque will be live music with the Allen Sisters. $50 entry fee pays for tournament registration, entertainment and dinner! Lisa Nikodym, chairperson of the Wrangell Bearfest golf tournament has chose to host a Fun N’ Frolic Best Ball with designated rest areas. Fun N’ Frolic events include games such as a Chipping Contest and The Longest Drive, but with special challenges, which have yet to be announced. And rest areas will be shelter and drink stations set up at designated locations on the course. Registration is open until fifteen minutes before tee time, however, calling a head to preregister is greatly appreciated. *Must be 21 years of age to participate. $50 entry fee pays for tournament registration, dinner and libations! After offering token coupons at the Wrangell Health Fair this year, patrons have been redeeming them and requesting the return of “Double Token Tuesdays”. So, as a token of our appreciation to your patronage, when you buy one token for a bucket of balls on the driving range, you get one free, every Tuesday until the end of season. Wrangell Golf Club Membership numbers continue to rise, however, we are still waiting on several more renewals. Membership dues are affordable at only $40/person, which will give you a discount on rounds of golf and the option to purchase a pass. For those who’d like to become a member and support the golf course, but aren’t interested in discounts and passes may choose the Associate Membership for only $15/person. These memberships make great gifts for relatives or golfers who live in outside areas but would like to remain an active member. The golf shop business hours are from 9:00am-dusk Mon-Fri 8:00am-dusk Sat-Sun Closed for poor weather Dog walkers are not permitted on the golf course, unless the front gate is closed, at which time all dogs must be cleaned up after, and remain on a leash. It is important to all golf course patrons to travel in the same direction. Golfers need to be aware that golfing while the golf shop is closed could result in approaching traffic. Golfers should be extra vigil and mindful of the safety risks. Anyone traveling in the opposite direction of golfers are putting themselves at serious risk of injury and are likely unaware of the risks. Golf is much more enjoyable when safety is put first. Game on, ~Shannon
