President’s Report On February 19th, we hosted Gründungsfest, our club’s 80th anniversary. The hall was full for our celebration and we were once again wonderfully entertained by our dance groups and the Golden Keys. I want to thank the volunteers, kitchen staff and servers for all their hard work to make the evening’s dinner such a success. I also want to thank the generosity of our dance groups for their monetary gifts to our club in recognition of this milestone. These monies will be used for improvements to our gardens and to an improved sound system in our Schwaben Hall. I also want to thank the Kindergruppe/ Jungendgruppe dance groups for their wonderful donation of a framed sketch of our Club highlighting our 80th anniversary. Our very own Miss Schwaben, Jennifer Tschirhart, a Fine Arts major, did the art work. It is a beautiful piece which will be treasured always. I used the opportunity of our 80th celebration to give, what I believe, is an important message to our members. I’ve asked that my remarks be included in this month’s newsletter and I hope you will take the time to read it. The message is one that needs to be heard often. March is fast approaching and for many of us not fast enough. We yearn for spring and warmer weather. On March 19th we have our Schlachtfest and hopefully you are planning to come out for the evening and support this traditional celebration. And if you haven’t already, consider inviting a neighbour, family member, church member, or acquaintance to come and enjoy the evening as well. Let’s provide memorable moments and enrich the lives of others with the wonderful fun and fellowship we have at our club. George Kraehling Jr. President Manager’s Report “What’s Going On” So much for January and February being slow months; it sure has been a busy start to the year. So far we have hosted Kameradschaftsabend, Movies, Battle of the Bands, A Spaghetti Dinner, Miss Schwaben, a few Transylvania Club events, a trade show, a Latino Dance, the 80th Grundungsfest, a Beatles Valentines dinner and show, a fundraiser dance, and some birthday parties, all in the first eight weeks of the year. If this is any indication of how busy we are going to be this year we are in for quite a year. Next month we have a U of W German student exchange dinner, another movie afternoon, a Singles dance, Schlachtfest, a wedding, stag and does, more Birthday parties and, well, the list go on. Watch the bulletin board and the Nachrichten for up-coming events. There are many more great events to announce in the coming months. I hope you will take in as many of these events as possible and have yourself a super time here at the club. It is a time to honour the young lady who will represent our Club for the next year, and to say goodbye to the Miss who’s term is coming to an end. Add to that a Masquerade theme, and you have the recipe for one heck of an evening. Like most events, it all started with the meal. After our outgoing Miss Mishi Savulescu said Grace, it was time to indulge. With the members and parents of all the dance groups volunteering to serve the meal, you know it’s all going to go smoothly and quickly! So once Grace was finished, caeser salads and buns came out. It’s the usual appetizer, but it really helps build the appetite. The entree arrived next - roast beef, ovenroasted potatoes, and mixed vegetables. It was all delicious, and befitting the evening. Finally, out came dessert - Mango torte. It was the first time it had been served at the Club, and I doubt it will be the last time. Now it was time for the performances. First up, a combined performance of the Kinder- and Jugend Gruppen. Wearing masks and carrying fans, the dancers covered the floor with their fun choreography. It was a perfect addition to the evening’s theme. A quick waltz with all the most recent Misses, and the band took over to help burn off dinner. Lucky for us, the band was the Golden Keys, so dancing was very easy. During the first band break, the Schwaben Dancers came out and performed their Masquerade dance. Dressed in elegant gowns, suits and masks, they added a touch of elegance to the evening. Then it was back to the band again. On the following band break, the Donau Dancers took to the floor. Performing a traditional Quadrille and also dressed elegantly and sporting masks, they added to the theme of the evening with their performance. Finally, it was time for the coronation. But before we could crown our new Miss, we had to say goodbye to the previous one. Thus Mishi made her goodbye speech and enjoyed a final waltz with her President, Phil Neidert. Then past Misses were called up to the front to as- sist in the crowning. Since a new picture was about to be hung up on the wall, an older one needed to come down. So Magdalena Adam was presented with her Miss picture. Finally, the new Miss was invited to the front of the hall. Jennifer Tschirhart, dressed for her new office, came up to be recognized. A poignant speech of Thanks, followed by an acknowledgement from out current President, George Kraehling, ended the speeches. This was followed bythe ceremonial first dance of the new Miss and our new President. The evening ended with the raffle (no, it was not rigged!), and the Golden Keys helping us dance the night away. Overall, the themed evening added to the formality and excitement of the evening. We can’t wait to see what next year’s theme will be. Peter Speckner Cultural Director Happy Birthday Schwaben Club! Most people fret about getting older, but I think our Club gracefully accepted the fact that it’s 80 years old now. That’s quite the feat, if you think about it. The men and women who started the Club are no longer with us, so the successes of the past years have to be attributed to their children, and their children’s children. And that’s what we celebrated at Gründungsfest; how well things are going now, thanks to the hard work of so many people. And it really was quite the party! Guests were greeted with appetizers on the table and servers walking around with hot snacks. The pate, cheese and crackers, pickles and olives were a nice touch, and helped to build up the appetite. After the national anthems and Grace by Miss Schwaben, dinner was served. Buns and garden salad were the first course. Then the entree - schnitzel, roast beef, roasted potatoes, carrots and Schwaben Beans. It was all delicious, and everyone indulged their hearty appetite. It was good that dessert was a light Fruit Flan, because there would have been no room for a heavy dessert. Then the performances began. First the Kindergruppe - they were cute, excited, and wonderful to watch. The Jugendgruppe was next. It is amazing to see how big the group has gotten; they showcased a new dance. With both groups having at least 8 couples now, the future really looks bright for them. The performances were followed by the presentations, and there were quite a few. First, there were the announcements. With so many invited guests in the audience, it was important to show them our appreciation. The pin presentations were next on the program. 25 years membership - Stanley Markowiak, Henry Brattan, and Stephen Brattan. 10 year pin Werner Bromberg, Jennifer Offak, Christopher Thompson, Katelyn Borch, Josef Schuster, Christopher Pottkamper, Hasel Frank, William Gehrs and Andrea Speckner. Finally, the Volunteer Service Pins were awarded. These go to members who have volunteered a large amount of their time to the benefit of the Club. The recipients were: Sophie Orsen, Susan Cook, Anton Sertic, and Adam Cook. But more presentations were still in order. Next, the President’s picture was given to the outgoing President, Phil Neidert. Then, the incoming President, George Kraehling, was presented with his President’s pin. There was even a special award presented by the Donauschwaben Verband (National Danubeswabian Association). The Knight’s Cross was presented to Betty Neidert for her years of service to the Donauschwaben culture. It is the highest award available to our members. The Golden Keys took over after the presentations, and really got the party hopping. During their first band break, the Donau Dancers performed. It was elegant, fun to watch, and ended with their energetic Viva dance. After a second round with the Golden Keys, the Schwaben Dancers came out for the final performance of the evening. They waltzed and bounced with the best of them, ending their performance with continued on page 11 5 6 7 Our President’s Speech at Gründungsfest Good Evening I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our members, guests and invited dignitaries. Thank you all for coming out this evening and helping us celebrate the Schwaben Club’s 80th anniversary. 8 This is my first Gründungsfest as the club’s president and with any beginning there is a tendency to look forward rather than to look back. And so I want to spend some time talking about how clubs, such as ours, are uniquely positioned to provide a service to our community that is becoming more and more important with time. Why is that? Well I believe it is because of the technology era we are living in. At an extremely fast pace we have more and more ways in which to interact with each other electronically. We have blogs, and chat rooms, e-mail and texts, Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace, and even more communication forums. We have notebooks, iPhones, blackberries, tablets, and iPads all capable of hooking us up globally via the internet. If you are in your 60’s or younger, you are extremely comfortable with some or all of this technology. It consumes our time. It is, for many of us, how we solely interact with each other. We are spending so little time face to face. with each other socially. I said I wouldn’t look back but I want to look at the era of the introduction of television in the 1950’s. Families learned to spend their evenings gathered around the TV. At least they were together. Now many of our homes have more than one TV and so we don’t even watch together. In my family my son will be watching something on one TV, Mary will be on a computer or I will, and Laura will be on another computer. I shutter to think if we didn’t have something like the Schwaben Club because here we can come and share time together, both as a family, and with friends. Mary and I have spent time vacationing in Costa Rica and we both noticed how in the evening the whole town would be out on the street and talking with each other. It was their evening entertainment. You see, most of them do not have a TV or a computer. We may feel we have all the riches, but the Costa Ricans are rich in friendships across their community. They spend time together. Last Saturday Mary and I came to enjoy the Beatles tribute here at the Schwaben Club. We had a lovely family sitting next to us - a husband and wife who had brought their two teenage sons. Their boys were already Beatles fans and were looking forward to the show. The evening gave them family time together. They shared a common interest, and it will provide a lasting memory. Upon reflection, Mary and I should have strongly encouraged our children to attend. In this technology era we need to take more effort to create those memorable moments. In our old age we will not be talking about the time we found that really great website. Hopefully we will be able to talk about the time we spent with friends, family, and neighbours. We, as Schwaben Club members, need to preach the good news about clubs such as ours. We need to invite our friends, neighbours, family, coworkers, fellow church members to come out and enjoy an evening of entertainment and fellowship. The goal is not to serve up more food on more plates. The goal is to enrich the lives of those around us. At Gründungsfest our hall is typically very full but for many of our functions we have the capacity to bring enjoyment to so many more. At our Miss Schwaben evening this year, where we inducted our new Miss Schwaben Jennifer Tschirhart, we enjoyed watching a minuet and a Quadrille being performed as part of the Masquerade-themed evening. I’d like to see an iPad do that. Our Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe had a fantastic spaghetti dinner last month. For hurried families with little family time together it was a great way for families to sit down to a delicious meal and once again collect a memorable moment. In this technology era we need to be social ambassadors. We need to extend the invitations to our Club. Get people out of their houses and apartments and into our halls. Think of our halls as a Costa Rican street. People come to meet and greet and exchange information, tell jokes and provide caring words. The Schwaben Club should not be a well kept secret. In this, all too often, isolated world we live in, we need to preach the good news and get people away from their technology and into our halls. Think of it as your calling. So please enjoy the evening and once again thank you all for coming to help us celebrate yet another milestone in the history of our club and if you had a good time think to invite others in order to enrich their lives with memorable moments. George Kraehling Jr. Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe After a busy couple months I finally feel caught up. Our group has had some enjoyable events including our 1st Annual Spaghetti Dinner, Miss Schwaben 2011 and most recently the 80th Anniversary of our Club. Our Spaghetti Dinner was pleasantly a huge success and I would like to thank everyone in our group who made this event run smooth, taste delicious and ultimately a success! Jennifer is looking forward to representing the club in the upcoming year as Miss Schwaben 2011. Happy Birthday, Schwaben Club continued from page 5 their rousing Rammstein dance. The evening was then handed back to the Golden Keys to lead everyone through the rest of the night. It was a fantastic evening, through and through. It started with great food, moved along with entertaining performances, and ended with the Golden Keys. Happy 80th Schwaben Club. We’ll do it all again next year. Many of us were out to celebrate the club’s 80th Anniversary. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate such a special milestone. We will be resuming our birthday meeting this month. I’d also like to mention the April meeting will be April 13 instead of April 6, due to the spring concert. Schlachtfest is in a few weeks and Krapfen are usually baked for the event. There will be more said about this. We always appreciate anyone who is able to help. Susan Cook Frauengruppe Secretary It’s 1964; the Ed Sullivan Show; a new band from England is making it’s debut. The rowdy rock and roll music causes the audience to go wild. Women are screaming and crying; men, the few that are there, are clapping and cheering. It is the Beatles! Almost 50 years later, Daytripper made it happen again. This tribute band brought the Beatles to life. The band members sang like the Beatles, spoke like the Beatles and looked like the Beatles. The show was great! The meal, created by our kitchen staff, was delightful. I heard only good comments about the dinner. So, thank you, Schwaben Club, for another tribute success.
