If I catch you, you will die (wafaiwe) [or, I will stab you (ndobaya)]”); traditional words (“My chivhiriri [child’s toy] that was given to me by my father, I work [play] it”). Class & Ensemble Performances Monday 5:45pm teacher: Gary Spalter teaching assistant, Jake Roberts KASAHWA (a little snake bone or fang) Traditional mbira piece, arranged for marimba by Gary Goldwater from Stella Chiweshe’s recording on “Ambuya.” The piece tells of being bewitched by an ancestor. Wednesday 4pm teacher: Wanda Walker teaching assistant, Mandy Walker-LaFollette NHEMAMUSASA (a temporary shelter) Traditional mbira piece, arranged for marimba by Wanda Walker with assistance from Mandy Walker-LaFollette. Monday 7:30pm teacher: Maggie Donahue (plus Chris Halaska and Gary Spalter) teaching assistant, Jake Roberts KUKAIWA (to be bothered). Composed by Dumi Maraire as a learning piece for his students; often the first marimba piece studied. Members: SaraLyn Brooks, Kay Burdick, Nancy Clogston, Jesse Davis, Sue Dickman, Will Dickman, Nancy Hammer, Ryan Herlands, Marie Javdani, Kate Prichard, Mary Jo Ramsey, Daphne Stone. Shamwari ensemble CHIKENDE (drainage pit) Arranged by Musekiwa Chingodza and adapted by Shamwari. This song was sung by workers digging drainage pits. They tease one another, saying, “Hey, Chikende, have you eaten your dinner nemusoro wembeva (with the head of a mouse)?” Sadza wadya here Nemusoro wembeva Nhaiwe Chikende! Members: Karen Hyatt, Barb MacWilliam, Ellen McQuilkin, Terry McQuilkin, Janese Olalde, Craig Palermo, Taylor Palermo, Toni Timmers, Michael Wherley. Hokoyo director: Gary Spalter MBIRA/AMOXOXO, played as a medley. Mbira was composed and arranged by Ephat Mujuru, Gary Goldwater and Shumba, Eugene’s first performing marimba band. This mbira-style piece interweaves many parts to create a complex melody. Amoxoxo (song of the frogs) was composed by Alport Mhlanga, one of Dumi Maraire’s teachers at Kwanangoma College in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. TODZUNGAIRA (“we are wandering,” a piece sung/played during times of turmoil or hardship). Traditional mbira piece, arranged for marimba by Hokoyo member Jake Roberts from mbira parts taught to him by Musekiwa Chingodza.
