HEAT REPEAT
On Thursday former Chargers doctor
David Chao confirmed in an email that he
agreed to let his operating privileges lapse
at two Scripps hospitals after administration agreed to drop an investigation that
accused him of failing to comply with several hospital bylaws.
After 17 years as the
team’s doctor, Chao
stepped down on June 13
citing a desire to spend
more time with his family
and personal health issues
as the main reasons for his

Scripps as asserted in an article published
online Wednesday by USA Today.
Chao added that he still has privileges
at both hospitals but performs all of his
operations at a private surgery center.
Scripps Health said in a short statement Wednesday night that the medical
executive committees at Scripps Mercy
Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital,
La Jolla recommended “the revocation
of Dr. Chao’s medical staff membership
and privileges” after conducting a joint
investigation. The committees, Scripps
said, found that Chao had failed to comply
with three specific articles of medical staff
bylaws; however, the health care system
declined to list specific infractions.
Chao, the statement said, appealed the
decision to an internal Judicial Review
Committee but later reached an agreement to “waive his right to a hearing on
the pending charges and not seek reappointment with the hospitals.”
In his email, the doctor said that money
played into his decision to settle.
“I was tired of spending tens of thousands of dollars fighting at a place that I
don’t really use,” Chao said.

ONE LAST PLAY
FOR MUNCIE IS A
SWEEP TRIBUTE
Chuck Muncie’s former Chargers
and Cal teammates wanted to pay a
special tribute to the late running back
during Muncie’s memorial service last
month.
So about 20 players huddled on
stage at the Rock Church in Point
Loma, calling one last play for No. 46.
One-time Bolts special teams star
Hank Bauer said linemen Doug Wilkerson, Billy Shields and Don Maceck
selected the play.
“They said, ‘Let’s run a sweep,’ ”
said Bauer. “You never argue with the
linemen.”
The players called “Split left 90
left,” a sweep to the left side and one of
Muncie’s staples with the Chargers in
the early ’80s. The players clapped and
broke the huddle.

MIAMI
LeBron James and the Miami Heat remain
atop the NBA, and not even a proud push
from the San Antonio Spurs could knock
them down.
James led the Heat to their second straight
title, scoring 37 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a 95-88 victory Thursday night in
a tense Game 7 that lived up to its billing.

used to build it — the Heat won the second
straight thriller in the NBA’s first championship series to go the distance since 2010.
“It took everything we had as a team,” Dwyane Wade said. “Credit to the San Antonio
Spurs, they’re an unbelievable team, an unbelievable franchise. This is the hardest series
we ever had to play. But we’re a resilient team
and we did whatever it took.”
Two nights after his Game 6 save when
the Heat were almost eliminated, James
continued his unparalleled run through the
basketball world, with two titles and an Olympic gold medal in the last 12 months.
“I work on my game a lot, throughout the
offseason,” said James, who was MVP for the
second straight Finals. “I put a lot of work
