LAC /PA-000723 COMPLEX COMBINATION OF SEVERAL FINISHES BRINGS ADDED DEPTH TO THIS COIN’S INTRICATE DESIGN. A FORCE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM. The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was established during the outbreak of the First World War. A wave of patriotism swept across Canada, and thousands enlisted in what they believed would be a short-lived conflict. Within two months, 33,000 volunteers were already in training—more than the initial 25,000 the government had hoped for. But the war would demand an even greater commitment, and over the course of the four-year conflict, more than 650,000 Canadians would enlist. Of them, 424,000 served overseas as part of the CEF. From Ypres (1915) and the Somme (1916), to Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele (1917), Canadians distinguished themselves as tough, resourceful and effective fighters. Today, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and The Royal 22e Regiment (The Van Doos) are just two of several enduring regiments that preserve the proud legacy of valour the CEF established during the First World War. $5 fine silver (99.99% pure) proof 23.17 g 36.07 mm serrated Scott Waters A TRIBUTE TO THE SOLDIERS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR. 2014 $5 FINE SILVER COIN— CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE #130545 95 NO GST/HST!* $64 Limited to 10,000 coins worldwide. QUICK FIND: mint.ca/CEF ACTUAL SIZE 4 ACTUAL SIZE OBVERSE FEATURES THE EFFIGY OF THE REIGNING MONARCH DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, KING GEORGE VI. D-DAY DEDICATION. Seventy years ago on June 6th, a pivotal campaign to change the course of the Second World War played out on the beaches of Normandy. After four years of occupation, Western Allies launched a cross-Channel invasion to seize a foothold in France and fight their way north to Germany. Securing a beachhead was the critical first step, and although the assault was carried out from sea and sky, it is the scene of soldiers pouring out of Landing Craft Assault (LCA) vehicles that has become the iconic image of D-Day. This coin’s unique engraving delivers a powerful perspective on the angst and anticipation soldiers must have felt as they approached Juno beach. More than 14,000 Canadians participated in the campaign, with more than 5,000 making the ultimate sacrifice. Collect this heartfelt tribute to the bravery, dedication and remarkable achievements Canada’s veterans have gained in the face of peril. $10 fine silver (99.99% pure) proof 15.87 g 34 mm serrated Maskull Lasserre CRAFTED IN PURE SILVER! 2014 $10 FINE SILVER COIN— 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY #132484 95 NO GST/HST!* $49 Limited to 8,000 coins worldwide. COURAGE OF THE BEAR. There is a time for everything; a time to yield and a time to fight. The bear teaches this well when it sets aside its shy and solitary nature to reveal its inner strength. A mother bear defending her cubs is unstoppable; she is ferocious and will fight to the end. It takes courage to stand up despite the fear. Such strength is not only physical, but mental and moral as well. Every person faces challenges that need the support of the courageous bear, and this coin is the perfect keepsake to celebrate those who have inspired others with their courage. Courage is one of the Seven Sacred Teachings that honour the traditional concepts of respect and sharing that are the cornerstones of Aboriginal life. While variations of these teachings do exist throughout North America, this diversity only enriches them and underscores the universality of their wisdom. $20 fine silver (99.99% pure) proof (with selective gold plate) 31.83 g 40 mm serrated Nathalie Bertin 6 THE SEVEN SACRED TEACHINGS SERIES 2014 $20 FINE SILVER COIN— COURAGE: BEAR #132625 95 NO GST/HST!* $109 Limited to 7,000 coins worldwide. You’ll never see caterpillars or butterflies in the same way with this coin. It highlights the amazing chrysalis that a caterpillar builds to change into a butterfly—and it does so using its own body as construction materials! It begins by spinning a silk pad on the underside of a milkweed leaf and attaching its hind claspers to it. Then, the caterpillar hangs upside down and slowly sheds its skin to reveal a moist exoskeleton that hardens into the chrysalis. During nine to 15 days, the chrysalis’s waxy, green colour becomes transparent and continues to darken as the pupa develops inside. Once the butterfly is ready, the shedding process begins anew as it pushes down and outwards to split the chrysalis and set itself free. This coin’s yellow, black and white caterpillar is a monarch, arguably the best-known butterfly and the perfect representative to showcase the architectural wonder of the chrysalis! $3 fine silver (99.99% pure) proof 7.96 g 27 mm serrated Trevor Tennant ANIMAL ARCHITECT SERIES 2014 $3 FINE SILVER COIN— CATERPILLAR AND CHRYSALIS #130534 95 NO GST/HST !* $69 Limited to 10,000 coins worldwide. SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP CAPTURES THE SEAHORSE’S BONY ARMOUR IN EXQUISITE TEXTURE AND DETAIL. SPELLBOUND BY THE SEAHORSE. The seahorse is one of the most fascinating creatures in the sea, and the province of Nova Scotia is fortunate to have one species of this extraordinary fish living along its coastline. It’s the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus), and its unique characteristics go far beyond its horse-like head. The seahorse’s eyes are reminiscent of a chameleon’s and can also swivel about independently. Fish scales have been replaced by a bony armour that covers the seahorse’s body in a series of rings, and the small dorsal fin, used for small amounts of propulsion, makes it easy to envision why this fish is not a good swimmer and needs a strong, monkey-like tail to pull itself around in the seaweed or coral. And, it’s the father who does the hatching—up to 700 eggs in his brood pouch—and he’ll only let his “fry” go when they know how to swim. 50¢ fine gold (99.99% pure) proof 1.27 g 13.92 mm serrated Emily Damstra SEA CREATURES SERIES 2014 50-CENT PURE GOLD COIN— SEAHORSE #130206 95 NO GST/HST !* $129 Limited to 7,500 coins worldwide. With their powder-puff bodies and tiny noses, the two baby rabbits on this year’s unique two-dollar coin are sure to delight nature lovers; even gardeners who sometimes have to contend with the rabbit’s insatiable appetite for flowers and vegetables. The eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) is one of North America’s most common rabbit species that can be found scampering across lawns, gardens and open spaces throughout southern Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. These rabbits are super-fast and run in a zigzag pattern that only adds to their charm, but it’s a critical defence mechanism designed to keep predators such as hawks, owls, coyotes, weasels, and even humans, at bay. Baby rabbits are called “kits,” and their mother, a “doe.” She’ll generally have five kits per litter, but with as many as 7 litters per year, she’ll deliver some 175 kits over the course of her lifetime—a bevy of delights for everyone! The history of North America is one of epic struggle as European nations fought for control. Long after the American Revolution and the War of 1812, the threat of American invasion remained ever-present. In September 1864, representatives from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the Province of Canada (Ontario and Quebec) met in Charlottetown, PEI, to discuss a maritime union, but the meeting took on a new dimension when Sir John A. Macdonald proposed the idea of uniting all colonies from east to west. A second meeting was held the following month in Québec City, and it produced the landmark document that laid the basis for the British North America Act, which ultimately led to Confederation in 1867. While many years would pass before the final province and territory joined Confederation, the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences were the critical catalysts that propelled the vision for “Canada” forward. $100 14-karat gold (58.33% gold, 41.67% silver) proof 12 g 27 mm serrated Luc Normandin 2014 $100 GOLD COIN—150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHARLOTTETOWN & QUÉBEC CONFERENCES #129282 95 † $599 Limited to 2,500 coins worldwide. QUICK FIND: mint.ca/Conferences INSPIRED BY THE HISTORICAL ILLUSTRATION BY CHARLES WILLIAM JEFFERYS (1869-1951). THE MOST EXPLOSIVE BATTLE ON CANADIAN SOIL. The War of 1812 was a turning point for Canada (British North America) by uniting French- and English-speaking inhabitants, Aboriginal communities, farmers, soldiers, artisans and others against an American invasion. After two years of warring, the Americans renewed their attempt to invade Upper Canada by crossing the Niagara River. With the first two battles won, they thought they would defeat the British, but their campaign came to an abrupt end at Lundy’s Lane, just two kilometres from Ontario’s Niagara Falls on July 25, 1814. The fighting began shortly before 7 pm with fierce hand-to-hand combat or closerange bayonets and muskets. By midnight, both sides were exhausted and all the generals were wounded. The Americans retreated, leaving behind all the artillery they had captured, and the British were too tired to pursue. Nearly 1,800 men were killed, wounded or missing, but America would never invade Upper Canada again. $250 fine silver (99.99% pure) proof 1,000 g 102.1 mm serrated Bonnie Ross WAR OF 1812 2014 $250 FINE SILVER KILO COIN—BATTLE OF LUNDY’S LANE #130543 95 NO GST/HST !* $2,249 ALSO AVAILABLE IN GOLD 2014 $2,500 PURE GOLD KILO COIN #130542 $69,000 NO GST/HST !* Limited to 400 coins worldwide. One can only guess the thoughts that went through Samuel de Champlain’s mind when he arrived in North America for the first time. Charged with mapping the New World and finding a western route to the Orient, Champlain built upon Jacques Cartier’s achievements from almost 100 years prior and made the first attempts at permanent settlement. In 1608, he built a habitation that eventually became Québec City. Champlain deepened relations with First Nations people, and as he began to explore the western interior with Aboriginal guides, his quest for new territory was slowed by demands for permanent settlement and by his growing role as Lieutenant General of New France. When Champlain died in 1635, the first Québécois settlers were beginning to arrive. Could Champlain have ever guessed his work would change the face of North America? Indeed, history books echo his name as the Father of New France. $200 fine gold (99.99% pure) proof 15.43 g 29 mm serrated Glen Green GREAT EXPLORERS OF CANADA SERIES 2014 $200 GOLD COIN—SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN #128945 95 NO GST/HST !* $1,199 Limited to 2,000 coins worldwide.
