In romantic counterpoint, Pont d'Avignon – of nursery-rhyme fame – spans halfway across the Rhône. Ancient cobbled streets pass inviting boutiques; leafy squares overflow with cafe tables. Since the arrival of the popes and their court during the 14th century, the city has always been an important artistic center. In 1947 with the creation of the Theatre Festival by Jean Vilar, it also became one of the world’s greatest theatrical meeting places. European City of Culture in 2000, Avignon vibrates to the rhythm of cultural events: opera, permanent theatres, societies and clubs that offer musical, theatrical or dance performances all the year round. Leading events over the seasons: Cheval Passion in January, the “Hivernales de la Danse” (contemporary dance festival) in February, Alterarosa in the Palais des Papes in May…and of course, the summer exhibitions in the palais des papes! The bridge aside, there is a lot to see in the ancient Provençal city of Avignon. As well as being a cultural centre and UNESCO World Heritage site offering marvellous art galleries, Avignon is also a centre for gastronomy, and an important center for initiation into provençal cooking: the chefs, some of whom are reputed, concoct traditional and original dishes to be relished in charming restaurants. The stall holders in the Halles, the oldest covered market in the city, offer the opportunity to sample provençal specialties and local products in an unrivalled atmosphere. And why not have a try yourself and sign up with a course on provençal cookery? And last of all, did you know Avignon is the capital city of Côtes du Rhône wines? The Palais des Papes has its own wine cellar where you can taste (with moderation …) the best “crus” (system of wine classification) of the region… Avignon Town Center Map: 7 MUST SEE / MUST VISIT MONUMENTS UNESCO Heritage Discover a grandiose monumental complex! For a while capital of Christendom in the Middle Ages, Avignon has preserved an exceptional cultural inheritance from its History, and a large part of this is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage sites: Not only the Palais des Papes and the Pont d’Avignon but also the large square in front of the Palais with the baroque façade of the Exchange, the Museum of the Petit Palais and Avignon Cathedral, Notre-Dame des Doms, as well as the stretch of ramparts that run from the Garden of Les Doms to the bridge. The Luberon is a place much sought after. Even before Peter Mayle and his bestseller “A year in Provence” famous people both in politics and show business came here to escape the curious crowds.Right in the heart of Provence, Luberon offers such historical and cultural sites as the Abbey of Senanque and the typical villages of Gordes, Ménerbes, Lourmarin… In the midst of this rough countryside of deep crevices and terrassed slopes, the inhabitants of Luberon have made a living out of wine making and the cultivation of lavender native to this soil. Address: 84220 Gordes Menerbes: From the top of a rocky overlooking the Luberon garrigue and distant vineyards, the fortified village of Ménerbes and its castle watch over Gordes and Roussillon. Inside, the narrow streets reveal a wealth of heritage: old houses, the town square with its 17th century belfry and bell tower. Like many villages in the Luberon, Ménerbes has attracted several famous artists such as Picasso who used to have a house there… Visit The Luberon House of Truffles and Wine and have a wine taste there. That place is an area of knowledge about the world of truffles as well as South-East wines. Address: 84560 Ménerbes Bonnieux : The village is characterized by a wide variety of natural or historical sites: its two churches, its fortifications, its remarkable streets and many old buildings such as the Hôtel de Rouvil (former common house from 1859 to 2006), the Hôtel Dieu (hospital from 1749 to 1948, today the town hall) and some large and beautiful houses whose facades one can admire: give Bonnieux its unique charm and character. On the other hand, 5 km from the village, the Pont Julien (Julian Bridge), is listed as a historical monument since 1914, and was built during the Augustan period (27 BC - 14 AD) on the Via Domitia and reflects the Roman influence in the area. The evidence of its prestigious past heavily influences the modern-day town, which reveals remnants of the ancient Vasio Vocontiorum, the capital of the Voconce people. The town and its medieval churches complete this panorama where history complements the lifestyle enjoyed by the inhabitants – and they certainly know how to enjoy life around here.
