en, Nine, Eight,
Seven……..
It’s
countdown
time
at Kensington! As seen
in the photos emailed to
you recently (and on the
following pages), we’re
nearing the completion of
the renovation of our beautiful clubhouse.
There is still much work to do, but our
contractor has assured us that they will
be ready for the Certificate of Occupancy
(C.O.) inspection by November 1st. We
then plan to take delivery of Furniture,
Fixtures & Accessories (F. F. & A.) between
November 3rd & 6th. This is our current
and realistic schedule however, we cannot
control issues related to inspections or code
interpretations. That being said, our plan is
to move in during the week of November
9th, warm up the kitchen equipment, get
the jitters out of the staff and OPEN with
a ribbon cutting “Welcome Back” party on
Saturday, November 14th!
So, we believe it is safe to plan your travel
schedules to be part of this very exciting
day. Additionally, our wonderful project
chair (and reason we continue to be on
time & under budget), David Portman,
will be conducting project tours the week
before opening as well as the following
weeks for our more seasonal flock. Watch
your email for details on scheduling and
sign-ups as these will be limited in group
size.

Our Food & Beverage operating schedule
as noted on the calendar, has been adjusted
and enhanced. We are adding another night
of dining (Thursday) and enhancing the entertainment quality for Friday evening dinner
dances with table d’hôte dining two times
most months and will bring you theme dining, some with programs, seafood nights and
periodic club parties on the other Fridays. We
hope and trust you enjoy these offerings as
your staff and committees have worked hard
to provide fresh and exciting ways for our
diverse membership to enjoy our new surroundings.
You will see many familiar faces when you return, as well as several new ones. Katie Flicker
has joined us as our new Lead Receptionist.
Katie hails from Leicester, England and has
been living in Naples for the past 11 years. She
worked in Guest Services at the Marco Island
Marriott & the Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort
and spent six years with Gulfstream Homes
working in Sales, Warranty and Administration. Additionally, Ms. Becky Taylor has
joined the team as our new Executive Club
Secretary supporting our Administrative and
Marketing functions. Becky was previously
with London Bay Homes and is from Medford, New Jersey where she was the Executive
Assistant to the COO of Burlington Coat Factory. Please join me in welcoming these fine
ladies as well as all the smiling new ladies and
gentlemen who are joining the Kensington
Family.
We all look forward to kicking off this season,
and a great new era for Kensington Golf &
Country Club!

Membership News
By Lindsey LaCroix | Marketing Director
I
am so happy to take this opportunity to introduce myself and officially say “hello” to all of you. Having been
on board now for just about two months, I am thrilled
to be a part of your team and look forward to a great season
ahead… and beyond.
In a time of year when life in Naples is generally at its slowest, August
and September, I have noticed a great number of people inquiring about
homes, rentals, and memberships. October will bring us several home and
membership resales, the start of our rental season, and many of you arriving
back for season. I have been receiving several calls a week from people
inquiring about renting a home here in season, with a golf membership.
The good news for the economy is that we have run out of rental options!
The bad news for the renters is that the demand outweighs the supply. If
any of you still have a rental unit available with a golf membership, please
let me know and I will try to match you with a renter. If you have friends
and family coming down and are still in need of a rental unit, please feel
free to contact me and we can discuss your options.
In preparation for what we believe to be a fantastic season, I’d like to share
with you some of our plans for marketing and promoting Kensington. First
and foremost, our message is clear: We are a member-owned, financiallystable Club with a stunning, newly renovated clubhouse. With the instability
of some of the developer-owned clubs around town, this message has a
stronger meaning than ever for the coming year. We will be marketing to
those clubs in turmoil and hoping to convert some of their members to
Kensington. I am finalizing our advertising campaigns and working on the
details for mailings, prospecting functions, Realtor education functions,
and member events for the coming months. We will be showing off our
Club as often as possible!
We will continue to offer our Associate Membership for the 2009-2010
year. This is a one-year “trial” plan with an incentive to join at the end. This
membership plan could be a great opportunity to those that are not able
to find a rental in Kensington for the coming season but still want to have
access to our amenities and facilities. Additional membership information
will be sent out from the Board of Directors.
Once again, we are anticipating a great season ahead and I am delighted to
be a part of the excitement at Kensington. Please feel free to contact me at
your convenience to discuss the membership plans mentioned above or to
just say “hello!”
I look forward to the opportunity to greet you all at the front doors of our
new clubhouse soon!

ow, summer has gone by quickly and the staff
has never been as anxious to get a season started
as we are this year. Under the direction of Golf
Committee Co-Chairs Jim Nelson and Gary London we
have a lot of exciting things planned. In addition to your
new clubhouse this is our trade in year for the golf car fleet.
There will be 50 new EZ-Go carts delivered the first week of November.
The Chelsea Tee Time system has been overhauled providing several new
options. If you haven’t already logged on since the upgrade was installed,
you will now access Chelsea through the Kensington website at www.
kensingtoncc.com. Once you are in the website simply click on Golf and
the first item in the drop down menu will be CHELSEA TEE TIMES.
Click on this link and it will take you straight in to Chelsea with no further
passwords required. Once you have your tee time business complete feel
free to browse the website for other information in which you may be
interested. Your Ladies’ and Men’s sub-committee chairs, Pat London
and Hagan Andersen, in conjunction with their committee members
have added several new events to spice up the schedule. In addition, Tom
and Julie McCarron of the couples’ sub-committee have developed a fun
schedule of events. The new event on the couples schedule will be the
“Kensington Fling” which will take place on Sunday January 24th. The
event will be chaired by Sue Butschi and details will be posted in the next
issue.
Don’t forget opening days for men and women are November 4th and
5th respectively. And our first Sunday Social for the year is November 1st.
Please be reminded that if your northern club is not on GHIN you need
to have your club forward to us your 20 most recent scores for handicapping purposes.
The Golf Staff is looking forward to yet another great season!

From the Rough...
of the many situations where we simply manage the population below thresholds that would cause turf loss. The loss of
Nemacur, as well as several other chemicals, puts us, as Golf
Course Superintendents, in a precarious situation because one
of our largest yearly pest problems now has no effective control. We are currently using an experimental product which is
an extract from a black walnut tree which acts as a repellent
but at the rate in which nematodes reproduce a repellent will
only work for so long.
By Corey McDonough | Golf Course Superintendent
F
or the past decade Golf Courses have
been under attack from environmental
groups mainly for the use of fertilizers
and pesticides. While I understand the concern
these groups have, the problem I see is that
we are being judged solely on opinion rather
than scientific fact. We have gone to extreme lengths to
prove ourselves, under accusations of misuse, to these groups
and the EPA but unfortunately we have been grouped with
two other agricultural entities, residential and commercial
landscaping and crop production, which have not aided
our cause. What’s our cause? We have tried to spread the
word that we are habitat builders not destroyers, that we are
environmental stewards and that we are as professional and
regulated in our approach to management as any other land
management group in the green industry. Unfortunately
the finger pointers have not actually visited the golf courses
that they are accusing of polluting the environment and seen
the abundance and variety of wildlife and wildlife habitat we
support. It is much easier to make a claim against an industry
if you do not actually know the facts.
Nemacur was taken off the market because it was used largely
in the crop production sector and was very effective to a point
that crop yields have drop significantly since it was pulled.
The EPA was ordered, as part of the Food Quality Protection
Act of 1996, to review 600 current pesticides and report on
which posed the greatest exposure risk to humans. Unfortunately this approach pitted agricultural producer interests
against consumer and environmental interests in a struggle
over measuring acceptable pesticide risk. Although I produce
no food crop, I am included in what is known as the “Risk
Cup” which evaluates all potential exposures and as a result we
lose an effective tool in maintaining the golf course.
Pesticides are used every day by everyone and public perception
is the only difference between what is acceptable and what is
viewed as a potential risk. Purell hand sanitizer is a pesticide
but many of us use this product several times a day, on the area
of the body that is most susceptible to absorption, without
considering any long term exposure risk. On the golf course
we use pesticides to create the acceptable condition that is
demanded within this golf market but we do so in a manner
that strictly adheres to the label and minimizes any potential
exposure to our members. Alternatives to the chemicals we
have lost will be developed and we will move forward but it
does raise several questions. Does using pesticides not make
us environmental stewards? Would you be willing to accept
the conditions of the golf course if pesticides were not used?
Could you live without using soap, bug sprays or sanitizing
products in your home?
The latest in a number of setbacks we have been dealt is the
loss of our only effective nematicide. This class of insecticide works against a plant parasitic worm called a Nematode.
Nematodes feed mainly on the turf ’s roots and have detrimental effects if left unchecked which can result in complete turf
loss of the affected area. I have personally seen low budget golf
courses that could not afford to treat large areas with Nemacur (product name), lose entire fairways during the summer
months because the turf has no roots to take up soil moisture.
Once nematode problems reach this extreme, which can happen in a matter of one summer, it is not an easy recovery.
There are 2500 species of nematodes but only two of them
are extremely detrimental to bermudagrass, Lance and Sting
nematodes. We have moderately high counts throughout the
golf course because it is impossible to eradicate the microscopic population through chemical applications. This is one

missy’s scorecard
I
am so excited for season to
begin. I love seeing people all
day long and it gets lonely in the
afternoons during the summertime.
I always consider the new season
begins October 1st and that is when
the new products start arriving.
Every year I try to plan an exciting
mix of products to accommodate
everyone’s needs. I try to buy items in all sizes but I am limited
to the quantities I can purchase. So if your size is not in stock
I can always special order it for you. My number one priority
is service and fulfilling member’s needs.
Ladies, you will see the best performing ladies lines returning
like Jamie Sadock, Tail and EP Pro. DKNY has introduced a
golf line which is designed by Jamie Sadock herself but using
the DKNY fabrics. Do you all remember Isisport? We are in
luck; the same designer and fabrics have been bought by a new
owner under the new name of le` helene. Before the holidays
find some great packable, fun, lightweight jackets from
UBU that have been featured in various magazines. We will
continue to offer Walter Genuin, Sesto, Footjoy, Golfstream
and now Aerogreen golf shoes. Have you heard of Baggalini?
This line of hand and travel bags was introduced by two flight
attendants and each bag has all the “right” compartments for
holding and organizing all your items. Look on our web page
for the array of choices from which you can special order.
We encourage you to view your golf shop as a store that you
will patronize not just for redeeming tournament winnings
but also your source for many other items. The more you
patronize your shop the more the
membership benefits from the
added revenue. The tournament
credits that you accrue should be
realized as added discounts to your
purchases.
Lastly, let’s not lose sight of the everyday savings you receive
as members in your golf shop. Most items are priced with the
retail price as well as the member’s
20% discount price. Please keep
in mind we are prepared to match
the price of any current golf
equipment that you see advertised
in local stores. Remember if we
sell it we service it. To inspire
sales for our first quarter of the
new season (October-December) we are offering a frequent
buyer reward program. At the end of the quarter we will track
the merchandise sales in the golf shop by member number
and reward Kensington Golf Shop Bucks based on your total
purchases. The “bucks” will be rewarded as follows:
GOLF SHOP BUCKS +
MEMBER DISCOUNT =
BIG SAVINGS $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I have brought in many returning
“players” in the golf apparel lines and added a few new ones to
stir up the arrangement. I have brought in product for both
men and women that I consider “leisure wear” for the after
golf scene. And there will be items for those looking for gifts.
By attending various shows I have the capability to order from
many different vendors, so as you are looking for items with
your corporate name or for items to give as gifts for an event
I can do it all. There is nothing like a one stop shop inside the
gates of Kensington. There will also be various price points
and sizes available within our purchasing parameters.
$100 purchased=$10
$250 purchased=$30
$500 or more purchased=$60
These “bucks” can be applied in the second quarter (JanuaryMarch) of the season toward merchandise purchases.
Men can look forward to Adidas, Under Armour, Antigua ,
Nike and Greg Norman for your true performance golf attire.
I have added upscale Peter Millar for their sun- washed golf
shirts, woven shirts, casual line of t-shirts, drawstring shorts
and swim trunks. Tommy Bahama is finally made available
to the golf shops their most popular silk camp shirts so think
of us when you are looking to update your cocktail wear.
Carnoustie is a men’s line that is prevelant out west in the golf
market with luxury performance cotton and birdseye collars.
We will also be offering items from the Jack Nicklaus collection.
And for those of you looking for the Nicklaus heritage polo
with tailored collar and left chest pocket, we’ll have it available
along with their expandable and gripper waistband short.

FITNESS
fitness center & spa
· Do you try to get in every now and then for a stress-relieving tune-up?
· Do you see your therapist religiously- once a week, every two weeks,
once a month?
While getting a massage-regardless of how often-is incredibly beneficial
to your mind and body, getting frequent massage treatments is even more
powerful as a HEALTHCARE ALLY. People who get massage therapy
regularly demonstrate greater improvement and notice a reduction in pain
and muscular tension. People regularly make a commitment to fitness;
changing their diet, etc.... the difference they’d experience if they regularly
made a commitment to massage therapy is phenomenal. It only makes sense
that those aches and pains might disappear faster, stay away longer, or even
go away altogether with more frequent visits. Stress might never reach those
detrimental levels. Not only would your body benefit, but your mind would
have time to wash away the stresses of a life lived in overdrive.
Massage therapy is a great way to take charge and reverse the situation.
