Gustavus Adolphus College and its nationally recognized Department of Music are proud to offer
the third annual Show Choir Camp for high school students, to be held on the Gustavus campus,
July 13–19, 2014.
Students entering their freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior year in the fall of 2014 are eligible
to attend. No previous show choir or dance experience is necessary! The first 125 applicants will
be accepted.
Our outstanding team of clinicians and counselors will promote self-confidence on the stage, teach
responsibility and teamwork, and foster learning in a supportive and positive camp environment.

Welcome to the 2014 Bloomington Gold Show Choir competition!
Once again, we’re thrilled to have you with us today for this exciting
event! Gathering such talented students-entertainers-musicians from
across our region is an honor and a pleasure for us all. The Bloomington
Gold competition is based on the values of hospitality, entertainment,
and excellence, and we hope these values are evident throughout the
competition.

meet the judges & Master of Ceremonies
Jennifer Gulsvig
albert jordan
Albert Jordan currently teaches voice and serves as the Section
Leader and Assistant Conductor at Mount Calvary Lutheran
Church in Excelsior, Minnesota. He attended St. Olaf College in
Northfield Minnesota, where he studied voice with Rick Penning
and has continued to do so for 15 years. Albert is the co-founder
of Cantus, one of two all male vocal ensembles in the country,
serving as their first Exeutive Director from 2000-2001. After
singing with Cantus for 10 years, Albert retired from the
group in 2006.
Jennifer Gulsvig is a 2002 graduate of Luther College, in Decorah,
IA and received her masters from the University of Wisconsin-La
Crosse in 2008. She has been teaching for the last 12 years. Her
first 3 years were at Clearwater Middle School in Waconia, MN
and in 2005-2006 she was in Tomah, WI teaching high school
vocal music and directingthe Limited Edition Show Choir.
Ms. Gulsvig is now a middle school choir director at Lincoln/
SOTA II/Coulee Montessori Middle School in La Crosse, WI
where she teaches 6th grade general music, 3 choirs, as well
as directs the middle school show choir. This year, she is also
directing Central Connection, LaCrosse Central’s prep show
choir. She is one of two directors for the middle level honor choir
in Northern Wisconsin. Jennifer loves spending her free time
doing clinic work with various middle and high school show
choirs in the midwest and during the summer is on staff at both
Showchoir Camps of America and Shell Lake show choir camp.
Dr. Brandon Dean
Dr. Brandon Dean serves as Assistant Professor of Music at
Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where he
conducts the 110-voice Chapel Choir and a 80-voice women’s
chorus. Dr. Dean also teaches courses in music theory, music
history and music education. Prior to his appointment at
Gustavus Adolphus College, Dean completed the Doctor of
Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of
Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
Frequently appearing as a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Dean
served on the international panel of adjudicators for the
2012 World Choir Games. He is actively involved in several
professional choral organizations and currently serves as the
Chair of Youth and Student Activities for the American Choral
Directors Association of Minnesota. In addition to the DMA
degree in conducting from CCM, Dr. Dean holds the MM degree
in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
and the BM degree in vocal music education from Luther
College. This summer, Dr. Dean will serve as Camp Director for
the third annual Gustavus Show Choir Camp (July 13-19, 2014).

c. takach
Timothy C. Takach enjoys a busy and varied career as a
composer, singer, clinician and freelance graphic designer.
As a full-time composer, Takach has a healthy schedule of
commissioned work, and his work has been called “gorgeous”
(Washington Post) and “eventful” (Star Tribune). He is a cofounder of the professional ensemble Cantus and Vice President
of both Graphite Publishing and the Independent Music
Publishers Cooperative. Takach graduated with honors from St.
Olaf College with degrees in Music Composition and Art.

Kym chambers Otto
Kym relocated to the Twin Cities after living in New York City
for almost a decade. Kym worked as a professional actor/singer/
dancer touring with the Broadway Tours Cats (Jellylorum,
Gizabella, and Jennyanydots), Cinderella (The Queen), and The
Wizard of Oz (u/s Wicked Witch/Miss Gulch).
Kym received a BA from St. Olaf College in Northfield,
Minnesota and an MA in Vocal Performance Musical Theater
from New York University. Kym has sung with The St. Olaf
Choir, The World Youth Choir (Estonia and Norway Tours) and
Vocalessence. Kym is also a founding member of a 4 Women
A Cappella Group called “Chick Cheer” entertaining over
the holiday season. When Kym is not performing in shows or
singing with Chick Cheer, she spends her time choreographing,
directing and teaching private voice lessons. You may have also
seen her in a few commercials and print ads such as Walgreens,
Kubota Tractors, ikeepsafe.org, Target, Best Buy, General Mills
and Mystic Lake Casino. “Break a leg to all the the choirs today!”
Tom Gerking
Tom Gerking is in his 24th year serving as director of choral
activities at Westwood Community School. Mr. Gerking is a 1986
graduate of Lawton-Bronson High School and 1990 graduate of
Morningside College. He has completed graduate work at Drake
University and the University of Iowa. At Westwood, Mr. Gerking
directs all curricular choirs in grades 7-12 and teaches sixth grade
general music. He directs three show choirs (The Rebelaires, Voices
in Motion, and the 6th Dimension). Mr. Gerking directs the fall
musical along with heading up the renaissance madrigal feast.
He is a frequent clinician and judge at show choir festivals
throughout the Midwest and currently choreographs several
show choirs throughout the state of Iowa. He had the honor and
privilege of serving as conductor of the 2010 Iowa Opus 7-8 Boys
Honor Choir. He has served on the summer camp staffs at the
Buena Vista University Show Choir Camp, Butler Showchoir
Showcase, Showchoir Omaha!, and the University of Southern
Mississippi Southern Experience Show Choir and Choral Camp.
He most recently served on the staff of the FAME Georgia Show
Choir Summit. Mr. Gerking also involved in music ministry at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City.
Jim Cox
Jim Cox received his Bachelors in K-12 Music Education from
Luther College and a Master’s Degree from Saint Mary’s University
of Minnesota. Now in his thirteenth year of teaching, prior
to Eagan High School, Jim’s experience has included teaching
positions at Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Kennedy High School in
Bloomington, MN, and Lakeville South High School. Jim is in his
third year at Eagan where he directs three curricular choirs, three
co-curricular choirs, and teaches voice lessons.
In addition to his ensembles, Jim also teaches Advanced Placement
Music Theory, is the vocal director for Eagan’s annual musical,
and directs the Dakota Valley Show Choir. Outside of school, Jim
directs his church bell choir, sings in the Minnesota Valley Men’s
Chorale, and loves spending time with his wife Megan, who is a
middle school choir director, and four daughters (all under the
age of 10!). Jim is an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and has been known
to be a little moody during football season. A special thank you
to the Bloomington Kennedy High School show choir students,
parents, and staff for all of your hard work in
planning this high-class event!

A consistent finalist in competition, Bloomington Kennedy is extremely
excited about hosting our second annual Bloomington Gold Show
Choir Competition this year on February 1st. We want to thank all
of our parents, families, and alumni for their support. Our 2014 set,
“Revolution,” begins with a quest for bravery and then explores the
youthful call to action through defiance, anger and the need to be a part
of something bigger than themselves.

East Side Swingers is the auditioned women’s prep show choir hailing
from Kennedy High School in Bloomington, MN. The singers are part of
Viva Voce, Kennedy’s auditioned women’s choir, and also meet outside the
school day once a week. This year they will host a competition at Kennedy
and compete at Onalaska, Waconia, La Crosse Logan, Totino Grace, and
Sloan Show Choir Competitions. This year’s set follows the classic fairy
tale of Cinderella, with one twist at the end. We hope you enjoy our story.

Valley View Voices is in its 4th year, and is an audition- based middle
school show choir from Bloomington, MN. The group consists of 60
students in 6th - 8th grade. The message of our set is that every decision
you make can and will impact your life, so make every moment count.
This year the group will be performing at Bloomington Gold, Waconia
Star Power, and other concerts and events throughout the year. We wish

Shockwave is a group of 73 talented and energetic 7th & 8th grade
students directed by Scott Brose. This season, they will perform at a
Show Choir Competition in Bloomington, MN as well as the Star Power
Show Choir Competition in Waconia. Their choreographer is Derek
Ostrem, and they are accompanied by the talented show band Microwatt.
Shockwave’s theme this season is “Fight or Flight,” or — in other words —
how a person deals with adversity. When a person is faced with a problem
will they give up & quit, or will they fight their way through adversity to
become a better person?

Midwest Express is comprised of 42 singers and dancers, 12
band members and 4 crew members. Midwest Express is an
extra-curricular activity that involves numerous students from
all aspects of our school. In the past 3 years Midwest Express
has grown exponentially from 10 members to 42 strong
which is all due to our incredible support at Holmen High
School. We would like to thank our parents in helping us
make this show possible. We invite you to sit back and enjoy

is under the direction of Richard Moses and Chris Meunier. Hilltoppers

own OHS Classic earlier this month. Hilltoppers would like to thank their
