Comyns` hallmarks
Comyns’ hallmarks Instituted in the fourteenth century, the practice of impressing symbols on gold and silver objects was initiated as a method of quality control and consumer protection. Today, this tradition continues in Comyns. Every creation of Comyns carries five hallmarks. The William Comyns hallmark Fineness of silver content mark, affixed by an independent assay office The assay office mark The date letter, or year of assay. For more than three centuries, the Comyns name has been recognised as a specialist in decorative sterling silver tableware and for interpretative works, particularly those of Paul de-Lamerie, the most highly prized of all silversmiths. Many of the pieces created were produced for major retailers from all around the world and are today found in the collections of the Great Houses of Britain as well as in many famous museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The heritage of Comyns is perhaps best reflected in our extensive archive of more than 35,000 tools, moulds and patterns from the most significant movements of decorative art - Baroque, Rococo, Neo Classical, Nouveau. It is this rich legacy that continues to inspire our craftsmen to create stunning pieces for those who enjoy and indulge in the luxury of sterling silver.
