Respiratory Safety Guide ChapSmith LLP is a 21st Century partnership born out of the ashes of the production, products and certain assets of the former company Chapman & Smith Ltd. In conjunction with certain well established European respirator manufacturers it is intended to form a strategic alliance to cover all respirator requirements, giving rise to the slogan:- “NUNQUAM NON PARATUS” (NEVER NOT PREPARED) N UN Q 11 UAM S TU RA A P N ON Contents Respiratory Protection Requirement 1 Assigned Protection Factors 2 Disposable Masks 3-8 Half Masks 9-14 Full Face Respirators 15-16 Power Dust Caps 17-18 Powered Respirators 19-24 Pressure Breathing Apparatus 25 Respirators for working with Asbestos 26 Respirators for Protection against Viruses, Bacteria and Droplet Pathogens 26 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus Emergency and Smoke Hood Apparatus An Aid to Respiratory/Filter Cartridge Selection 27-28 28 29-32 Qualitative Fit Testing 33 Quantitative Fit Testing 34 Product Information and Terms and Conditions 35-36 12 Respiratory Safety Guide Respiratory Protection Requirement Respiratory protection is required where the wearer may encounter one of the following six forms of hazard in the workplace: Dust Formed by the breaking down of solid materials, normally when materials are altered. For example, sanding, cutting, grinding and brushing. In general the smaller the dust particle the greater the hazard that it presents. Fibres from materials should also be treated as dusts. Mist Formed by processes that involve atomisation (such as spraying, cleaning and cutting/grinding using coolants) and consist of tiny liquid droplets rather like steam in a bathroom. Fume Formed by the vapourisation of a solid material by the application of intense heat. Extremely fine particulates are formed as the fume cools and condenses. Many processes form fume; such as smelting, pouring metals and many welding applications. Vapour A gaseous state formed by evaporation from substances that are normally either solid or liquid at room temperature. Generally released at room temperature (petrol, methalated spirits), many industrial processes, used in degreasing vapourise particularly quickly once heated. Gas An air like substance at room temperature. Gases can travel far, very quickly. Oxygen Deficiency /Enrichment When an atmosphere is likely to contain less than 19% oxygen (or where conditions may exist in the future to cause this to happen); and in certain circumstances where the risk may be oxygen enrichment, which can lead to explosion and severe impairment of operatives. NOTE: Conventional respirators DO NOT protect the wearer from this hazard. CAD drawing of an exhalation valve 1 Assigned Protection Factors Prior to the purchase of respiratory equipment, a product selection should be carried out by the user or his technical representative based on a risk assessment of the hazards faced by the user. This risk assessment will take into consideration the level of protection needed to protect the user in the proposed environment. Once this assesment is carried out the assigned protection factor can be established. To determine the required APF (Assigned Protection Factor) it is simply a matter of dividing the measured level of concentration by the Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) that the local legislation allows. This calculation will give a required protection factor (RPF), selection is then just to ensure that the APF for the RPF selected is above that required. If when selecting RPF there is any question, then a quick call to our Technical Helpline on +44(0)1993 826051 or email [email protected]. It should not be used against fine dust, toxic gases, vapours or paint sprays but only to reduce discomfort caused by non-toxic particles when the concentration does not exceed permissible exposure levels. Whilst not protecting the user against dust, gases, vapours or paint sprays Comfort Masks do have the application of protecting items in production from the wearer’s exhaled breath i.e. printed circut board production etc. The mask features: • Adjustable nose clip single headband. • Suitable for nuisance levels of non-toxic dust below the WEL only. • This is not a respiratory protective product. Filter Type • • • 32 Respiratory Safety Guide Qualitative Fit Testing Qualitative Fit Testing can be used on what are defined as tight fitting respirators, with the exception of full face masks. Within the JSP Respiratory Protective Equipment range these products are: • • • Moulded Disposable Dust Masks Vertical Fold Flat Dust Masks Maximask 2000 Half Mask (fitted with dust filters) Full face masks cannot be tested because the test hood is not large enough for the mask fitted with a filter. For testing this product it will be necessary to use the Quantitative method (discussed below). Qualitative Fit Testing can be used not only as a test method to ensure your employees are properly protected; but also as a 33 very effective way of training them in the correct way of fitting a mask. Dust and half masks commonly fail to do the job they are intended to do because of poor fitting and care by the user. The seal between the face and the edge of the mask is the most common problem area. You will also see users using a mask after having kept it on their head or hanging round the neck. The test employs a hood to create a small test chamber around the users head, and a test solution. This test solution has a bitter taste. It is the same type of solution that is put on childrens toys and fingernails to stop them chewing them. As the test uses these two consumable parts and is designed to be carried out by the employer; it is a very cost effective solution for assessing the ability of the selected Respiratory Protective Equipment and the training given to protect the employee. Quantative Fit Testing JSP offer a Quantitative Fit Testing service that can be carried out at the employers site. The service can not only check how well protected the employers staff are but also offer training in the correct fitting and care of the respirator being tested. Quantitative Fit Testing can be used on all tight fitting respirators including full face masks. This means it is suitable for testing all JSP Respiratory Protective Equipment except; PowerCap, Jetstream and Air Fed. However generally speaking this method will not be used when disposable dust masks are the RPE being used. JSP use the Portacount from TSI to carry out on-site Quantitative Fit Testing. This is an easily portable particle counting device that has been developed in the United States of America. It has been well tested in this market over many years. Unlike in the EU, masks in the US are only tested for their filtering efficiency and not on a selection of users to check the inward leakage of contaminants as we do in the EU. The problem with any standards testing is that it cannot take into account the large variation in the shapes of peoples faces and therefore it is important to know that a mask actually fits the wearers face. taken of the mask. Quantitative Fit Testing is a very effective, and importantly, measurable way of ensuring that the user has a mask that will give him/her adequate levels of protection. Portacount works by comparing the particles outside a wearers mask, with those inside it, that have got past the face seal. JSP’s Respiratory Technicians will first check that there is a suitable number of particles in the area that the masks are to be tested in. At the end of the test, a report is produced for inclusion in the employee’s records. While this report is being printed JSP’s Respiratory Technician will give the wearer instructions in the care of his/her respirator. Quantitative Fit Testing provides the employer with a measurable result for a particular mask on a particular employee and is therefore an extremely important part of an effective Health and Safety programme. Please contact 01993 826050 or email [email protected] to arrange for a site visit from one of our Respiratory Technicians. With all Respiratory Protective Equipment, the most common problem is the fit of the mask to the wearers face and the care 34
