Ed Robold Plane News 2 Wanted – Activities Chairman Our current Activities Chairman, Jim Walters, who has been past president and a long time active supporter of the club, has asked to be replaced in his current position. Thus the club is looking for a member who would like to assume the duties of the activities chairman. The activities chairman is a part of the steering committee and would meet with them at the scheduled meetings. Document the activities with photos. Field Trips – Arrange several field trips for the membership each year to locations of interest. Such locations could be a suppliers factory, sawmill, educational institution, magazine shop, etc. Publicize trip to the membership, document with pictures and report. The chairman is not expected to accomplish these duties by him/her self alone. The activities chairman would enlist other members and work as a team to make these various projects occur. Interested members should contact Ed Robold or Mike Quinn. Jim Walters and others can provide guidance, expertise and advise in carrying out all these duties. Some of the projects are already underway and have members willing to support a new chairperson in their completion. Sincerely, Ed Robold - President Plane News 3 September Speaker September 8, 2012 Steve Coup, Owner of Coup Restorations in Columbus. Restoring and refinishing historic furniture pieces. Future Speaker November 10, 2012 Mike Herrel of the Colonial Chair Company Designing and building Windsor Chairs. Special Thanks to WoodWerks I personally want to thank our vendors for supporting our club. In this article, I want to acknowledge WoodWerks Supply for not only the gifts they have given us for our Christmas/Holiday Toy Party but also for supporting the club by donating receipts gained from old magazine sales directly to the club treasury. They have donated $57.00 to date. This may not seem like much, but it really helps to defray the operating costs the club incurs in its operation. WoodWerks would not have had to donate this money to the club but did it voluntarily. These funds will be put to good use.. I am sure many of you have been helped by the great WoodWerks staff who takes an interest in each customer. Support the local vendors. A customer who was not from the area came to me and said, “you have no idea how lucky you are to have a great woodworking store like this so close to you.” He said “I drove over 100 miles to come to this store.” The Woodworkers of Central Ohio thanks Ron Damon and WoodWerks! Sincerely, Ed Robold President Plane News 4 OHIO STATE FAIR For the fourth consecutive year WOCO displayed at the Ohio State Fair. This year we were at the Fair on Wednesday, Aug.1 and Thursday, Aug. 2. The purpose of our booth was to create more awareness for WOCO in the local community and to highlight our Community Service activities. Toward this end we showed examples of some of the toys which we make throughout the year for our Holiday Toy Program, demonstrated the use and effectiveness of our Chair Risers and exhibited one of the dressers which we make weekly at the Furniture Bank. As a fun activity for the kids and to introduce them to woodworking we once again had them drill holes in a Tic-Tac-Toe game which they then kept as a souvenir of the Fair. This has proven to be a very popular activity with the children and their parents. After completing his game one little boy said to his mother, “We can play this in the car on the way home and we won’t have to worry about the batteries going dead!” During the two days we went through 270 game blanks. This year we also attached a sticker with the name of our Club and our website address to each game. Many thanks to those WOCO members who volunteered their time and talents to help make this year’s booth a success: Chuck Murray, Dan Strohecker, Tom Barr, Fred Ball, Leon Gage, Dick Dorritty, Mary Kay Marsh, Joe Dible, Mike Ware, Jerry Seabaugh, Les Brinkley, Kevin Condon, Harry Surwald, Lou Gatch, John Herrel, Jim Walters, Ivan Dangler, Tom Quertinmont, Dan McIver, Ed Razler, Mike Totsch, Dave Chenault. Mike Quin Plane News Committee Chairs Selected We are interested in providing value for our club members in the form of presentations, demonstrations, field trips, guest speakers, programs, discounts, education, and participation in various community service projects such as chair risers, the Furniture Bank and the Christmas Toy Project. To further these goals, the following WOCO members have agreed to serve as committee chairmen. If you have questions, ideas or concerns, please contact the respective chairperson or one of the officers. 5 Holiday Toy Program I hope you have all been busy over the summer making toys for our annual Holiday Toy Program. Let’s make this years result the best ever! If you are interested in joining one of the several groups which are making toys, contact Mike Quinn and I will get you set up. Also, we still have a supply of wheels available so if you need them you may contact Dan Strohecker to obtain your requirements. You may recall I mentioned earlier in the year about a toy making competition with the Dayton area club. I’ve had some initial contact with them to try to figure out how to determine a winner. Lately I can’t seem to get a response from their representative so I’m not sure where this is going. Hopefully I will have more information at the September meeting. But, contest or not, we need to maintain the high standards we’ve set over the last 25 years and make a lot of children happy during the Holiday season. Mike Quinn You can assist these individuals by letting them know your thoughts and ideas. Please share them – your feedback helps mold our club to be the best it can be. We look forward to hearing from you! Mike Quin Plane News 6 Arthritis Chair Riser status 2011-2012 No new Changes for this month Today I met with Chris Parson, Program Director Great Lakes Region of the Arthritis Foundation. Great group and they really appreciate the work WOCO has done for them. Ohio is part of the Great Lakes Region which is comprised of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia and part of Pennsylvania. Columbus is the main office so the message about the chair risers can be spread across a wide area. Currently they have inventory in excess of 100 sets of chair risers. He has actively contacted all the divisions to promote this and wants us to put together a small brochure showing the chair risers and how they are used. He will send this to their physical mailing list of approximately 11,000 which includes those people afflicted plus care givers. They requested chair risers made from 2 boards only. For those people of shorter stature, the tall risers are a bit much. Chris will also add the risers into their quarterly newsletter which will go out shortly. So far they have shared the chair risers with all the Great Lakes Region affiliates and handed out dozens of sets during a regional meeting. Chris has contacts at OSU Orthopedic Center and will contact them and explain they have the chair risers. For this the brochure would be a benefit. Chris also said they have partnered with the Flying Horse Farm which provides an extended camp opportunity for children with varies ailments. He thought there may be some opportunities to provide some toys that the children could use at camp. I said I would send photos of the types of toys our group has made so he could get some ideas. Actions: Madison - Send photos of various toys to Chris. I will send the link to our web page but if you have more toy photos, please let me know. Madison and Joe Zagula - Make chair riser brochure showing basic chair risers PDF for easy distribution Include both short and tall versions? Thanks to all for supporting this program! David Madison NOTE: Starting with this year, we will be sending out the newsletter two weeks before each meeting. We’re on the web! http://www.wocoweb.org Plane News 7 Delaware Group Nearly every week we gather (usually on Thursday afternoons) at a member's shop to continue our efforts to plan, plane, cut, sand and finish the 400 or more items for this season's array of gifts. This year we are building the following (so far): Log trucks Airplanes Block trucks Doll cradles with dolls and linen for each Stacking puzzles Pounding benches Pickup trucks Tug boats Puzzle shape games Race cars Bimonthly we have a group gathering at a members home. On Saturday, August the 11th we met at the Sunbury home of member Marion Ackerman where we discussed the toy work currently in progress and checked to try to ensure all pieces were either made, being made or finished or waiting for finishing. Last Thursday, August the 9th, we met at Dan Martin's garage where he had made preparations to enable us to spray lacquer the majority of toys which are ready to be finished. A good turnout enabled a long and laborious task to be done in just a couple of hours. The finished toys were repackaged and will be brought to Don Wenzlik's shop Thursday the 16th where we will finish putting them together and adding necessary finishing touches. In the past we have discussed trying to organize Termite member trips to visit Ohio woodworking points of interests. Tom Quertinmont was elected the "organizer" for this and participation will be open to all WOCO members. Suggestions to date include: Keim Lumber Hartville Tool The flea market in Troy (good grade wood shorts are said to be sold there) Wagon wheel maker near Baltic. Warther Model Train Museum in Dover. Baseball bat maker and wooden boat manufacturer in Plain City. The Delaware Group (Termites) are an authorized sub-chapter of WOCO. Membership is open to any WOCO member whose dues are current and who wish to experience more hands-on woodworking and fellowship with other WOCO members. For more information the Termites just call the group coordinator Steve Sattler, at 740.363.8018 Steve Sattler Plane News 8 I-70 Woodworkers Group No new Changes for this month The I-70 Group met at the home of Dave Goll. Members talked about their shops and what kind of projects they enjoy making. Group members brought plans and fine examples of toys they have built. It was decided that for our first toy build, our group is going to focus on the fabulous Carousel that Jim Walters shared with us. Part assignments were made and we have hit the ground running. Saturday May 5th at 9:30 Members will be meeting at Ron Grady's shop for carousel assembly. Saturday June 16th at 9:30 The next I-70 Group meeting will be held at the home of Mary Kay Marsh ( 6449 Red Fox Ct.
