Free consultancy
in robotics
The Manufacturing
Technology Centre (MTC)
is offering companies free
consultancy in robot technologies,
and a chance to win funding of
up to €150,000 for automation
initiatives, in a new EU-funded
project called ROBOTT-NET.
The MTC is one of just four
European research organisations
in the ROBOTT-NET consortium,
which includes Fraunhofer
IPA (Germany), the Danish
Technological Institute (Denmark)
and Tecnalia (Spain). Each
organisation will offer vouchers for
up to 400 hours of free consulting
to companies who develop or
deploy automation technology in
industrial production.
'Open Lab' demonstrator
events will be held in all four
countries, with the UK's first
Open Lab hosted at the MTC
in Coventry on the 26 May.
These events will provide more
information on how companies
can apply for the vouchers,
and how to secure the further
development assistance of up to
€150,000. The funding sits under
the European Commission's
Horizon 2020 project, the
EU's biggest ever innovation
programme.

Mollart sold to management team
Mollart Engineering Ltd has been sold to the
company’s management team of Chris Barker,
Mike Pragnell, Ian Petitt, Wayne Thomas and Jon
Upton. The purchase by the management team has
been supported by Mollart's existing bank, HSBC, and
Vine Street Capital, a long established venture capital
investor. “Mollart has been in family hands for 88 years
and the existing management team are best placed to
take the business forward and build on its heritage,”
says Guy Mollart. “I shall remain as president of Mollart
while I am still president of the MTA.”

Sodick machines make
good impression
Mexico-based Sodick dealer
Protecnic Soluciones CNC
welcomed guests to its new
headquarters recently as part of the
company’s ExpoTecnic open house
event. The new facility is home
to Protecnic's large showroom,
which put on display a variety of
Sodick EDM machinery, as well as
Protecnic's other offerings, including
five-axis mills and lathes from
Tsugami and Hermle.
The event featured live
demonstrations of Sodick
technologies, including Sodick's
SL400G, which features the
latest Smart Pulse generator and
tablet-style control. Protecnic
also showed the VZ300L wire
EDM, which Sodick says offers
one of the lowest floor space
requirements of any EDM on the
market. With regard to die sink
EDM, the AD35L was on display,
featuring a zero electrode wear
circuit and SVC fine-finish circuits.

Among the new machines
will be a Lynx 2100B lathe,
a Puma GT2100M turning
centre (integrated with a Fanuc

centre. Two new larger Puma
turning centres will also be on
display: the Puma 4100M 15”
chuck machine and the Puma
5100LYB 21” chuck model. The

Robotic
solutions
ABB (stand 5771) is
planning to display its
latest generation of FlexArc
standardised arc welding
cells, which feature either one
or two robots controlled by
ABB's MultiMove software.
Demonstrations on the stand
will also include the company’s
laser welding technology
combined with ABB’s new
FlexInspect automated in-line
inspection solution and YuMi,
a dual-armed robot that will be
making its debut. A key feature
of YuMi is its use of ‘leadthrough programming’ for simple
tasks, which enables operators
to teach the robot simply by
placing its arms in the required
positions and recording each
movement.

Romi to show
5 CNC machines
Romi Machines (stand 5628)
will be exhibiting five CNC
machines from its 240 sq m
stand, which is not only double the
size of its stand at the last MACH
in 2014 but the company’s largest
ever at the exhibition. The machines
on show will include a Romi DCM
620-5X full simultaneous five-axis
VMC (pictured), which will be
machining a model of a Romi-Isetta
micro-car from a 300 mm square
billet. The Isetta was built under
licence by Romi between 1956 and
1961, making it the first ever car to
be produced in Brazil.
Elsewhere on the stand will
be a GL 280M turn-mill centre
featuring live tooling and a
C-axis, which will be served at
the show by a Kawasaki robot.
The automated cell will be
running throughout the exhibition
machining a Romi bottle-opener as
a free giveaway to stand
visitors. Further machines
demonstrated will include a D1250
three-axis VMC with 1250 mm
X-axis, which Romi says is proving
particularly popular in the UK
market, along with a C510
mid-sized teach lathe. In addition,
the company’s range of CNC
plastic injection machines will be
represented by the Romi EN70.

Presetting
expertise
Erowa
workholding
Zoller UK (stand 5764) is set to display
the Venturion tool presetter, which offers
enhanced structural integrity to accommodate
tooling weights up to 60 kg. The Venturion is
said to provide repeatable accuracy of 0.002
mm thanks to its ACE (Auto-Clamping Element)
spindle and automatic CNC focus. Also on
show will be the Smile, Zoller’s general purpose
presetter with automatic focusing and data transfer
capabilities.

REM Systems (stand 5081) will use the
exhibition to launch workholding and
automation products from Erowa that are
said to offer increased efficiency and productivity
to UK machine shops. According to the company,
Erowa's mineral cast tombstone cube combined

zero-point system maximises the working area and
allows operators to set-up the workholding while the
machine is in operation.

Large capacity
rotary draw bender
Baileigh Industrial (stand
4430) is planning to unveil its
new large capacity rotary draw
bender at MACH. The heavy-duty
RDB-480, which can accommodate
tubes measuring up to 114 mm
diameter (with wall thickness up to
8.56 mm), is being shipped over
especially for the exhibition. It will be
the first time that the RDB-480 has
been seen anywhere in the world
outside of the US.
Elsewhere on the stand will
appear a wide range of machinery
from the Baileigh portfolio. Visitors
are invited to come along and view
a series of live demonstrations
that the company is planning on its
smaller tube benders and rollers.

Star turn
Star Micronics (stand 5340) is set to bring a
total of eight machines to the event, with many
performing live demonstrations. The spotlight
will be focused on the launch of the Star SV-20R
sliding head turn-mill centre featuring a dual tooling
system. The machine provides both a platen and
turret to enable balance turning and milling capability
together with an eight-station independent rear toolstation that provides overlapping capabilities. Also
at the show will be the SR-38B, a 38 mm diameter
platen machine that offers balance turning and
B-axis capability, with or without a guide bush.

Metrology
and sawing
Starrett will showcasing its portfolio across
two stands at this year’s show. The company
will exhibit its range of metrology and force
measurement solutions in the show’s Metrology
Zone (stand 5950), while the company’s bandsaw

hall (stand 4314). The company will have its team of
technicians present on both stands for the duration

CP 4000
A five-axis, twin-pallet
horizontal mill-turn centre
from Heller Machine Tools
(stand 5751) is set to make
its first appearance in the UK.
Designated CP 4000, the 800
x 800 x 1045 mm capacity
machine will be equipped with
a PCU (power cutting universal)
HSK 63 spindle, which is rated
at 44 kW/244 Nm for speeds of
up to 10,000 rpm. Acceleration
is 6m/s2 in all linear axes
leading to rapid traverse rates
of up of 65 m/min. Also new on
the Heller stand will be the CNC
Profitrainer, a scale replica of a
four/five-axis horizontal-spindle
machine tool.

four brands
Vero Software will be
joining its parent company
Hexagon at this year’s
exhibition, showcasing new
and enhanced features in the
latest releases of its CADCAM
software suites (stand 5710).
In total, four brands from the

Radan. Newly developed and
enhanced features will be
demonstrated in Edgecam 2016

Horn Cutting Tools (stand
5358) will be showing its
new grooving and parting-off
systems featuring internally-routed,
pressurised coolant galleries.
The company now offers modular
systems based on grooving
cartridges 845 and 842 for use
with the S100 grooving system.
These offer groove widths of 2.5, 3
and 4 mm, with depths from 22 to
105 mm.
Elsewhere on the stand, the
System 406 tangential milling
system is said to offer high
performance shoulder milling with
internal coolant supply, providing
good swarf evacuation, improved
tool life and high surface quality.
Similarly, Horn says that elevated
levels of performance have been
reported using the Type M101
disc milling cutter along with the
DAH37 high feed milling cutter,
which now benefits from new

Vision systems

CMZ takes
six machines
Innovation from Stemmer Imaging (stand 5956)
will include an industrial vision system making
3D measurements on parts as they pass along
a conveyor, a multi-camera packaging inspection
system, a robotic pick and place system offering
pattern-matching capabilities, and component
inspection using a high-resolution smart camera.
The LMI Gocator series of 3D profile sensors will
be highlighted in a conveyor belt demonstration
where various parts will be measured and a pass/fail
decision made.

CMZ (stand 5230) will be promoting its TA, TC
and TX turning centres. For instance, from the
company’s TA stable will be the TA 20 YS-640,

a turning centre with driven tools, Y-axis and subspindle can work autonomously with CMZ's own gantry

Citizen launches Miyano BNJ-SY6
Citizen Machinery (stand
5640) is unveiling its
latest (sixth) generation
of Miyano BNJ-SY6 fixed head,
dual-spindle, twin-turret turnmill centre. According to the
company, the new machine
features higher rigidity in both
of its spindles, greater torque
for driven tools, a Y-axis on the
main turret and a new design
of eight-station second turret
that creates additional milling
capability.
Although the BNJ-SY6
is available in two capacity
versions, 42 and 51 mm, it will

2.5D and 3D Vortex tool-paths to be fine-tuned, with

annual material savings alone

a machining centre, each
component took 24 minutes
to machine and resulted in
8.1 kg of waste aluminium.
In contrast, using the Modig
Universal Mill, which instead
of using billets is bar-fed,
waste per part was reduced
to 0.28 kg, while cycle time
fell to 12 minutes. Annual
cycle time savings amounted
to 3200 hours.

Machine Tools has taken over the
manufacture of terminal lugs from
38 mm diameter copper bar at the
Plymouth factory of subcontractor
Morris Engineering. The cycle
time to machine the component
at both ends has been reduced
to 3 minutes, compared with the
21 minutes required previously by
a twin-spindle lathe with a single
Y-axis turret.
"We could not have accepted
this job on a long-term basis
without investing in a new machine,
as the contract would not have
been profitable,” says managing
director Tim Winzer. "The cycle
time has been reduced by such a
large amount because we are able
to perform a lot of balanced turning
and milling at both spindles, as
the third, lower turret serves both.
We often have three tools in cut
simultaneously during the cycle.”

delivery of its first sliding head,
a Star SB-20R Type G, in
September 2014 and set to work
manufacturing the company’s own
products. An immediate surge
in demand was witnessed, and
before long orders had increased
by 3000%; prompting GWR to
install a second identical machine
last year.

JoTiKa’s Citizen adds
to Victory’s success
Based near Droitwich,
JoTiKa (Caldercraft) has sold
approximately 200,000 scale
replica kits of model ships around
the world, which include more than
1500 detailed versions of one of
the most famous ships of all time
– HMS Victory as she appeared
at Trafalgar. When built, this static
model is over 1.4 m long, 525 mm
across the beam and almost 1 m
in height, and weighs some 15
kg. With each kit comprising over
9000 individual items ready for
assembly, 100 of these are brass
cannons (pictured) which are now
finish-turned on a Citizen Cincom
L20E CNC sliding head machine.
The machine has brought the
company’s brass components,
such 20,000 cannons in five
different sizes (enough for six
months) and 100,000 miniature
brass stanchions for HMS Victory
and other kits, back from external
subcontractors. In addition, it
has introduced the practicality for
on-demand, in-house production.
The new Citizen is covering
the machining of items as
small as 0.6 x 5 mm long to
components such as propeller
hubs, water and fuel fittings,
collets and couplings, up to the
machine’s 20 mm bar capacity.

was the case when XYZ needed
to deliver a new SLX 555, 1.75
m between-centre lathe to MRW
Railways in Cleethorpes. Access to
the workshop was impossible for
the Hiab crane lorry, so alternative
arrangements had to be made
and one of MRW’s narrow gauge
locomotives was pressed into action.

loaded on to the train’s flat wagon

crane. Once off the train and

Metrol Springs installs
two more Hyundai-Wias
Andy Marks has no interest
in buying “high priced”
turning machines simply for
the sake of a “name”: he would
rather spend more wisely but still
obtain machines that are “durable,
reliable and fit for purpose”. That’s
why, as joint managing director of
Metrol Springs, he has recently
increased the company’s tally of
Hyundai-Wia CNC lathes from
Ward CNC to five. These, he says,
do everything that more expensive
counterparts do, “but are much
more cost effective”.
The Northampton-based
manufacturer of industrial gas
struts, gas springs and gas spring
systems has recently installed a
Hyundai-Wia L300LMSA CNC
lathe with C-axis, sub-spindle and
driven tooling, and a L250SY CNC
lathe with sub-spindle and Y-axis
to complement three existing
Hyundai-Wia turning machines,
the first of which was installed five
years ago.
“We did look at alternative

barfeed offers continuous,
controlled automatic feeding of
bars/tubes of any profile, without
the need for lubrication. The
hydrostatic design allows raw
stock material to rest in a series
of guide supports made from an
advanced plastic material. The
supports resemble clam shells,
with a top half and a bottom half
that close around the stock to hold
it in place and provide stability
during the turning operation.
Standard stock material lengths
of 1300, 1700 and 3300 mm can
be accommodated without any bar
preparation, in diameters from 10
mm incrementally up to 120 mm
diameter, and are automatically
loaded in 3 to 6 seconds.
Leader says that the DB-Evo
can rotate at high speed without
damaging the surface of the stock
material, irrespective of the type
of material and its profile (round,
hexagonal, square, rectangular,
oval, and so on). This is thanks to
brands but have found our existing
Hyundai-Wia models very durable
and reliable,” says Marks. “With
barfeeds, conveyor unloading and
tool monitoring, they are often
left to run unattended round the
clock – plus our operators are, of
course, very familiar with how they
work. Importantly, too, Ward CNC’s
service is excellent.”
The new pair of machines
was set straight to work by
Metrol Springs on a variety of
components, including steel
housings and pistons being
machined from a range of
steels (carbonised, mild and
tool) in varying batch sizes to
suit customer demand from
automotive-based clients, mainly in
the Far East.
“Like our other Hyundai-Wia
machines, the new models are
very autonomous units that can be
set up then left to run unattended
and worry-free,” concludes Marks.

at KW Engineering
Poole-based subcontractor,
KW Engineering, has
installed a CMZ TA20YS-640
turning centre from independent
machine tool specialist, Ray
Vockins, who works on behalf of
CMZ in the south of England.
“Myself and Ray had spoken
many times about the CMZ range
but until recently we were 100%
with another manufacturer for
our turning centres, so I kept
turning him away,” says managing
director Keith Ward. “That was
until we won a three-year contract
for one specific component
manufactured from stainless steel.
We recognised that we would need
a more substantial, rigid machine
with both a Y-axis and sub-spindle
capability, and the CMZ met that
brief perfectly.”
The CMZ TA20YS-640 installed
at KW Engineering features a main
spindle with up to 22 kW and 366
Nm of torque available, and each
German lathe machine
manufacturer, Traub, has
taken its 32 mm capacity
sliding/fixed headstock TNL32 bar
auto and added a 100° pivoting
B-axis to the upper turret. The
machine is available in the UK
through sole agent, Geo Kingsbury.
The nine-axis CNC machine
is intended for the production of
complex parts, particularly those
needing angular milling and drilling
operations, which no longer require
the use of expensive and often
inaccurate angled driven toolholders.
Designated TNL32-7B, the lathe
can operate with or without a guide
bush. Long parts requiring true
sliding-head operation are machined
with the bar gripped by a collet and
fed by up to 305 mm through the
guide bush, which supports the bar
close to the cutting tools.
Yet in a matter of minutes, the
machine can be changed over to
produce short parts in fixed-head
mode, with the bar clamped by a
collet in the spindle and moved
127 mm into and out of the cutting
zone using the Z-axis motion of
the headstock travelling at up to 20
m/min. Eliminating the guide bush
avoids the need to use expensive
ground stock.

export markets like the US, which
completely buys into the ‘Made in
Britain’ element of the product.”
