Tales
My
Grand
Dad
Told
My favorite
story is
about the
Elk he shot
in 1907. It
was a
Montana
record at
the time
and hung in
a Kalispell bank until someone stole it.
I remember lots of the tales my Grand Dad told me. Some were about his boyhood days in
Nebraska where he lived in a sod house.
He told me about his life as a homesteader in Kalispell, Montana.. He had, what he called,
a stump ranch and made his living off the land by logging, raising cows, growing a
garden, and hunting in the local forests.
He told me about his Grand Father, David Solomon Bailey, who lost his leg in the civil
war and about his Father, David Jackson Bailey, who was an early homesteader in
Kendrick, Idaho about 1901. David Jackson Bailey had been a cowboy during his youth
and then tried his hand at farming in Valley County, Nebraska between the late 1870's and
1900.
Grand Dad, Frank Jackson Bailey, made his living with a team of Belgium Horses. His
favorite team was named Dick and Nell. He could do almost anything with that team of
horses. He always had some great stories about the things he did with them.
He used his team of Belgium horses to do Logging in the winter with a sled.
And he used his draft team to haul firewood, water, ice, and bail hay.
Another tale Grand Dad told was about the time he and his brother were hunting in
Montana. Grand Dad was in a small meadow surrounded by thick lodgepole pines. He
thought he was shooting at the same running deer until the action was over and he
discovered he had actually shot seven deer.
Grand Dad told me about the time he and his brother joined the Montana Militia about
1914.
And about the 4th of July when his sister Meda wore the Stars and Stripes.
In 1918 Grand Dad moved to Idaho and began wheat farming.
He told me about his daughter's visits to Grand Dad Brown's home and the big horses they
rode in Montana.
During the 1950s we took lots of trips back to the family home in Montana. On one of
those trips I met Uncle Lon who was an expert horseman and lived on his own stump
ranch near Creston, Montana.
Uncle Lon gave me a horse to ride on one of those visits and I've been in love with horses
since that day.
Thanks to Grand Dad and Uncle Lon I'm keeping the family tradition alive today. There is
one big change though - today I'm known as Cowboy Grand Dad.

From James Wall:
Calvin PLYMPTON's family Bible is about the only thing that survived Charles Henry
PLYMPTON's house fire. In the Bible is the name Job with no dates or surname and it
also lists twins Elijah T. PLYMTON and Phoebe E. PLIMPTON b. 20 July 1818.
The Elijah b 1818 is thought to be our Calvin's younger brother. Our Calvin was born
1815 so we presume Elijah & Phoebe are his younger siblings.
We are of the opinion that Calvin, Elijah T. & Phoebe E. are the children of Timoty
PLYMPTON & Sarah TOWNSEND of Penn Yan. Yates Co. NY and that Sarah
TOWNSEND is the daughter of Elijah TOWNSEND & Phoebe WOOD. <<twins named
Elijah & Phoebe no coincidence in our opinion>>

Montana. Grand Dad was in a small meadow surrounded by thick lodgepole pines. He
thought he was shooting at the same running deer until the action was over and he
discovered he had actually shot seven deer.
I thought the story was a tall tale until I found this photograph. Count them for yourself.

During my childhood we took lots of trips back to the family home in Montana. In 1950 I
met Uncle Lon who was an expert horseman.
Lon lived on a stump ranch in Kalispell Montana. He introduced me to horses and it
changed my life. I will never forget the first horse I rode; or the wonderful fishing trip he
took me on in Montana when I was just seven years old. I will always hold his memory in
high regard.

Jerry England is a
native Californian
whose love for the
romance of the Wild
West began over 50
years ago while
watching Saturday
movie matinees. Like
most kids growing up
in the 1940s and
1950s, Jerry's early
heroes were
Hollywood cowboys
like Hoppy, Gene, and
Roy, but Jerry also
came from a family
whose pioneer heritage
can be back-trailed for
over twelve generations across the forests and prairies of America.
Jerry remembers tales his Grand Dad told about being raised in a sod house in Nebraska
and later homesteading in Kalispell, Montana and Kendrick, Idaho.
Jerry is also a serious student of the American Cowboy and draws much of his inspiration
from such heroes as artists Charles M. Russell, Will James, Jo Mora, Edward Borein, and
Till Goodan.
In 1989, inspired by the work of the late Thomas Molesworth, Jerry established Lure of
the Dim Trails and began a new career as a Western folk artist. Since 1989, Jerry's art has
been featured in such well known publications as Southwest Art, Western Horseman,
Country Living, Sunset, The Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, Home Magazine, Yippy
Yi Yea Magazine, and in 1994 the cover of Country Sampler's WEST.
Books listing Jerry's work include Cowboy High Style, by Lisa Flood; Way Out West by
Jane and Michael Stern; Western Design by M. J. Van Deventer; and The Whole Cowboy
Catalog by Mc Queary and Wallis
Home and Garden Television's Carol Duvall Show (Episode CDS-1121) featured Jerry's
Western Furniture November 13, 2001.
Jerry established cowboyup.com in 1995. Cowboy antiques, and collectibles offered on
this site are from Jerry's personal collection. Jerry sold cowboy and Indian antiques
between 1989 and 2000, under the name Lure of the Dim Trails. You may have met him at
the Cody Old West Show, the High Noon Show, The Western Design Conference, the
Paso Gathering in Paso Robles, Cowboy Traditions in Tucson, or the Santa Ynez Vaquero
Show in years past. He is a former member of the National Bit, Spur and Saddle
Collectors Association (NBSSCA).
Today Jerry and his wife, Joyce, live in Chatsworth, California, and spend many hours on
the trail with their equine pals: Sun Up, Cash, Zinger, and their wee-one--Biggs.
Jerry is active in local politics In 2000 Jerry founded the Chatsworth Equine Cultural
Heritage Organization (Chatsworth ECHO). He is a Board Member of the Chatsworth
Neighborhood Council and continues his battle to protect his rural community by acting as
the Chairman of its Equestrian Committee and Co-Chairman of its Land Use Committee.
In recent years Jerry has even tried his hand at writing some cowboy poetry. Come back
and see us again.

JOHN1 BAILEY (1618)
JOHN (HADDAM FOUNDER)1 BAILEY was possibly born about 1618 in Sheffield,
Yorkshire, England, and died June 17, 1696 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. He married
LYDIA BACKUS 1655 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT, daughter of WILLIAM
BACKUS and possibly SARAH GARDINER (sister of Lyon Gardiner).
I Notes from the files of Adolphus Hiram Sage (a Bailey genealogist of the late 19th
century. His research is in the NY State Library Archives located on Madison Ave.,
Albany, NY):
·John Bailey was one of the twenty eight original proprietors of Haddam, CT 1662.
·John Bailey was the progenitor of one of the largest Bailey families in America.
·John Bailey is said to have appeared in Hartford about 1642 where he resided on "South
Side" which probably meant in the vicinity of Wethersfield.
·John Bailey was Constable and Tax Collector in Hartford during the years 1656 and 1657.
·John Bailey was made a "freeman" by the General Court at Hartford, May 21, 1657.
(Connecticut Public Records 1-297)
·John Bailey was probably from England, but his origin has not been definitely learned. In
May, 1638 a vessel "The Bevis" from Southampton, England arrived in New England with
four passengers named Bailey. (SEE PASSENGER LIST FOR THE SHIP "BEVIS")
·If the Bevis passenger was our John Bailey, he would have been 24 years of age when he
arrived in Hartford in 1642. This John Bailey was evidently born about 1618.
·If he was the John Bailey of Hartford and Haddam, he must have been about 78 years of
age when he died at Haddam in 1696.
·About 1655, John Bailey married Lydia (Backus) and their first three children were born
at Hartford, or at least before they settled in Haddam.
II PASSENGER LIST FOR THE SHIP "BEVIS":
In May, 1638 a vessel "The Bevis" from Southampton, England arrived in New England
with four passengers named Bailey.

JOHN BAILY. (Copied from original Paper on file.)
IV Settlement At Haddam:
The first emigrant ancestor was John Bailey or Bayley, as the name was then spelled. He
was first member of the Bailey family in America. He came from England before 1640
and lived in Hartford, Connecticut. John was a viewer of Chimneys and ladders at
Hartford in 1648. He was a constable in March 1656/57. He became a Freeman in May
1657.
About one month after England's King Charles II signed the Charter of Connecticut in
April, 1662, a committee of the Connecticut Colonial Legislature bought a large tract of
land from the Wangunt Indians for a trifling sum (about $100.00). That same summer
John Bailey was
one of twenty-eight young men, of Hartford and near by towns, who took up the purchase
and started a plantation on the lower Connecticut River. This region was called "Thirty
Mile Island Plantation". It was opposite a small island in the river, which was about 30
miles from Long Island Sound. Six years later it became known as the town Haddam,
named after Great Haddam, England.
The first settlement at Haddam was on the low ground immediately north of the present
village and on the western border of the great meadow which is still a notable natural
feature of the landscape there. The tract of land, including the great meadow, and
extending some 60 or 70 rods westward from the river was divided into lots of about seven
acres each and drawn as home lots of the original proprietors in 1662. The actual
settlement was probably made in Spring of 1665. Thomas Smith's lot was south of Gerard
Spencer's whose lot has
remained in the Spencer family at least until the early 20th century. John Bailey had the
next lot south of Thomas Smith and built his house on the rise of ground where the present
house stands on the east side of the road. The next house south of John Bailey's was
Daniel Brainard's.
V Additional Notes:
· John Bailey came from England to Connecticut with two brothers. One of his two
brothers (names of the brothers are unknown) had several sons (Amaziah, John, Timothy,
and Richard are known)
· John Bailey was one of the original 28 founders of Haddam, CT.
· There is a hand-drawn map of the Haddam area showing the original residence of John
Bailey called "Higganum". This was located between the CT river and Candlewood
Brook. Slightly to the Northwest is an area called "Baileyville". Current maps of CT show
both Higganum and Baileyville.
· The "Connecticut Public Records" contain numerous citations of this John Bailey:
-He was given a receipt for 60 Pounds that he had collected in his capacity as Constable.
-On 24 Sep 1669 he is listed as a Freeman of Haddam.
·John Bailey of Hartford in 1648 and 1666 and of Haddam in 1676 was the father of the
Bailey Family of that place, per R. R. Hinman's book "First Puritan Settlers of the Colony
of Connecticut".
·John Bailey (Sr.) died 1696, will dated 17 Jun, 1696. The will mentions his eldest son
John and other sons Benjamin and Nathaniel, land in Haddam at a place called
"Higganum", and daughters Lydia, Susannah, and Mary. On the back of the will he
mentions "my daughter" Elizabeth Clark and my son Thomas Clark.
· "General History of Connecticut",
Pg. 1797 The Haddam Bailey's began with John Bailey, immigrant, who came from
England to Haddam, but first in Hartford 1656-57 and May, 1659. Died at Haddam, 1696.
Had sons Benjamin and John.
· "Manwaring's Hartford Wills"
Thomas Smith died 2 Nov 1674; will dated 22 Sep 1674. He wills his property to "Wife of
John Bailey , Daniel Brainwood (Brainard?), James Wells, Nicholas Noyes, John Smith,
John Bailey, Daniel Cone (?), (?) Stennard and Steven Luxford. Executors: John Bailey
and David Brainard,
who declined.
· On 28 Dec 1728, John Bailey, Jr. of Haddam, was appointed Administrator of the estate
of Thomas Smith, "Late of Haddam". The court ordered the estate distributed according to
the will of Thomas Smith. Distributees: John Bailey, heirs of Lydia Spencer, dec'd,
Elizabeth Clark,
Benjamin Bailey, heirs of Susannah Hubbard, Nathaniel Bailey, Mary Cornwell and the
children of Lydia Bailey, dec'd. It appears that 54 years later, John Bailey Jr. had located
additional estate assets not previously inventoried. (1-234)
· The Hartford, CT State Library Old Manuscripts Section contains the will of John Bailey
of Haddam.
· The publication "Two Hundredth Anniversary of the First Congregational Church of
Haddam: 1696 - 1902" contains information on John Bailey, one of the 28 original settlers
of Haddam.
· "Town Votes, Vol. 1"
In a very early undated list of property owners is John Bailey 108 Pounds - this is before
1671; his number 6 on the list and is spelled "Baly".
· "Land Records of Haddam, CT"
18 Feb 1730/31: Benjamin Bailey to his son Samuel Bailey 29A (acres) where Samuel
now lives plus 63 A land laid out in right of his
"honored father John Bailey, late deceased".

· Among the very early Baileys in the New England were:
1. William Bailey of R.I. very early.
2. Stephen Bailey of Southold, L.I. before 1673 and probably much earlier. Associations
between this and the Haddam family might seem to
indicate some degree of relationship.
3. Thomas Bailey was given a home lot at Milford, CT in 1646.
4. Another Thomas Bailey was one of the original proprietors of New London in 1651.
5. Among the earliest settlers of New Haven was "Samuel Baile".

Notes:
· This Bailey family lived in Haddam, Connecticut from its beginnings in 1662 until at
least 1762. Some years after his marriage in 1761, Oliver Bailey moved his family first to
Middlefield, CT then later to Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. By 1803
Oliver and Hannah (Scoville) Bailey had removed to Granville Center, Bradford County,
Pennsylvania. Four of his children stayed in Massachusetts: Oliver Jr., Phebe, Hannah,
and Mary (called Polly).
· At the time of his death in 1822, the Towanda newspaper, "The Settler", wrote: "Mr.
Bailey [Oliver] was a soldier of two wars. He served through the whole of the old French
War and was one of the first who asserted our independence in 1775. He served through
the whole of that ardous struggle for liberty and was in many of the most important
battles. He was one of the most respected and first settlers of Franklin (then including part
of Granville), having resided in that place 19 years. He had 12 children, all of whom lived
to have families and to an advanced age."
· FRENCH and INDIAN WAR
In 1758 Oliver served the King of England in the French and Indian War with Captain
Jonathan Latimore's Fifth Company of the Third Connecticut Regiment. In 1760 Oliver
served the King of England in the French and Indian War with Captain Ichabod Scranton's
Fifth Company of the Second Connecticut Regiment
· REVOLUTIONARY WAR
· From the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 72,
"DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION", page 4,
has:
"Oliver Bailey was a private in the 8th Company of Capt. Cornelius Higgins of Haddam,
Col. William Douglas' 5th Battalion, Genera Wadsworth's brigade, raised June, 1776, to
reinforce Washington's army at New York; he was in the battles of Long Island and White
Plains".
· From Record of Service of Connecticut Men, Edited by H.P. Johnson, page 409:
"Fifth Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade. Col. Douglas, 1776.Capt. Higgins Co. Oliver
Bailey. Private. This Battalion raised June '76 to reinforce Washington's army at NY.
Served in the city and on the Brooklyn front, being at the right of the line of works during

attack on NY. Sept.15 and forced to retreat hurriedly. At battle of White Plains, Oct. 28.
Term expired Dec.25, '76".

Rosemanty Rogers' Family History
Rosemanty ROGERS, wife of Smith BAILEY, was born 24 SEP 1789 in Catskill, Green,
NY. She died 2 DEC 1843 in Washington Twp., Franklin Co., OH at 54 years of age. She
is buried in Indian Run Cemetery.
Generation 2 (parents)
Zepheniah ROGERS was born either 7 or 18 MAR 1747 in Mendon, Worcester, MA
[military and vital records differ]. He died 7 OCT 1823 in Franklin Co., OH, at 76 years of
age. The Vital Records of Mendon, MA: Pg 97 Hayward, Zepheniah, son of Abigail 18
Mar 1746 (1746-7 Town Copy). Transcient person. He married ROOD, Elizabeth in
Litchfield, Litchfield Co., CT, March 7, 1770.
Elizabeth ROOD was born 16 APR 1753 in Torrington, CT. She died 21 MAR 1838 in
Franklin Co., OH, at 84 years of age.
Generation 3 (grandparents)
Abigail HAYWARD was born ABT 1730. A New England Historical and Genealogical
Society [NEHGS] researcher says that NEGHS is sure that this Abigail did not live in
Mendon, nor was she probably from there. She was on her way from point A to B and the
baby [Zepheniah] arrived. It was in her favor that the town agreed to record his birth, and
the NEHGS researcher said an undesirable would not have had this privilege. NEHGS isn't
even convinced that Zepheniah was illegitimate.
Unknown1 Rogers.
Isaac ROOD was born 23 MAR 1726 STAFFORD, Tolland, CT.
Elizabeth (ROOD).

"Zepheniah Rogers, a native of New England, born 1747, served in the Revolutionary war
in Capt. William Satterlee's company in the regiment commanded by Colonel Elmer. In
1796 Mr. Rogers emigrated with his family to Towanda creek settling in Canton township
on what is known as the Hubbel Manley farm. He occupied a floorless log cabin, 14 x 18,
in which he set up a one-legged bedstead--simply a forked stick driven into the ground on
which were poles running to a crack between the wall logs and these poles threaded with
bark for bed-cord--the magnificent furnishing of many an old-time first cabin. He Also
built a little tub-mill on his place, having a capacity for cracking from a bushel and a half
to three bushels of corn in twenty-four hours. In his old age Mr. Rogers enjoyed the
benefits of a pension granted by the government. Both he and his wife, Elizabeth, died
upon the homestead at advanced ages. Of their known children were: Zepheniah, Jr., who
for a number of years occupied the Lindley place, subsequently removed from the county.
Irvine married Hannah, daughter of Laban Landon and remained in Canton. Roswell R.
occupied the homestead. He married Minena________and had the following children:
Roswell R, Lucinda (Mrs. George Manley), Amanda (Mrs. William Miles), Claracy (Mrs.
Abner Walters), Eliza (Mrs. Elliott Manley), Deborah (Mrs. Martin Coon), William W.

"Zepheniah Rogers settled on what is now know as the Hubbell Manley farm and his son,
Zepheniah, Jr. settled the farm now occupied by Joseph and Solomon Lndley. The Rogers
came probably from Vermont. The old gentleman built a little tub-mill, as it was called, a
very' rude affair, the stone being the common conglomerate found in the coal measures,
and rudely dressed, having a capacity for cracking from a bushel and a half to three
bushels of corn in twentv four hours, if kept steadily at work. Mr. Rogers also st off to his
son Roswell the farm that is now owned by his son William. The old people died on the
place, which has been held in the family name until a short time ago".

· Unsupported claims about Zepheniah ROGERS' lineage
In my research of the ROGERS family I encountered several unsupported claims that
Zepheniah ROGERS, the son of Abigail HAYWARD, is a direct descendant of
MAYFLOWER PILGRIMS, but I have not been able to find sources that will support
those claims.
