Reviewing: The Situation
A look back at
Garage Reviews in 2014
Since being founded in 2011, WhoCanFixMyCar.com has
aimed to do just one thing: help drivers find a great local
garage for their service or repair. Motorists simply tell us
what’s wrong with their car (and where they live) and
local garages and specialists provide a quote. Once a
garage has been chosen, and the repair is completed,
there’s one vital final stage: drivers leave a review for the
garage. Great performers get the fanfare they deserve,
while others can address any criticisms they receive. It’s
a virtuous circle - and we’re lifting the lid on the facts.

It’s the all-important question: it’s no use having thousands
of reviews if they’re all negative! Fortunately, they’re not:
• The average score (out of ten) in 2014 was 9.2, and
96% of customers would recommend the garage they
used.
• Our garages’ reviews actually got better throughout
the year, as negative feedback was quickly addressed
and garages went the extra mile (see below)

What does this mean
for businesses?
The common themes here are fascinating. Glowing reviews
reference service, recommending, helpful, experience, honest,
quickly time and time again. Negative reviews, however will
focus on delays, prices, and not being kept in the loop.
But… how important are reviews to today’s customer?
In short… they’re essential. Our own customers tell us us
they’re 2.5x more important than price when it comes to
choosing a great local garage, with Google’s ‘Gearshift’ survey
(2013) states recommendation as the most influential factor,
even ahead of face-to-face treatment at the garage itself.
Meanwhile a recent Nielsen study says that 27% more of us
trust online reviews than did four years ago - so they are only
becoming more influential over time.

In short, the playing field - if not level - is getting flatter. For
generations, well-known brand names were bywords for
certain attributes (value, speed, quality, reliability), creating
emotional connections between brand and customer. Smaller,
independent businesses couldn’t hope to compete with the
brand strength of their high-street competitors.
However, now that it’s simple to compare products and
services online - irrespective of brand strength - so smaller
players with good offerings have begun eating away at their
better-known competitors (witness the rise of Kia and Hyundai
at the expense of mainstream European brands, for example.)
We see exactly the same effect amongst our garages. Very
quickly, little-known local specialists begin building great
reputations on WhoCanFixMyCar.com - indeed, there’s a
direct correlation between great reviews and new customers just as it should be!

The 2015 AutoSport &
London Classic Car Shows
2015 has started with a bit of Petrol Head overload –
Two fantastic auto shows which both ran over the same
January weekend.
At ExCel – The London Classic Car Show gathered some of
the world’s finest classic cars under one roof, bringing them
to life! One of the show’s unique features was the Grand
Avenue, a motoring catwalk that allowed the star cars to be
fired up and driven around the show!
At NEC – Autosport International ran alongside the
Performance Car Show. Cars from all forms of motorsport
shared floor space with a fantastic array of supercars from
the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren. The annual,
four-day event now in its 25th year concluded with
attendance figures of 82,000, well above 2014.

Europe's largest motorsport show, Autosport International,
now celebrating its 25th anniversary was packed full of
dream cars, motorsport stars and exhilarating live action
with features such as the F1 Racing Grid, Dunlop MSA

BTCC display, Wales Rally GB display and the infamous
Autosport central stage featuring interviews with some
of motorsports biggest names.
Amongst the guests interviewed on stage were Petter
Solberg - the first World Champion in two different FIA
disciplines, David Coulthard – ex Formula 1 driver & BBC
F1 commentator and Allan McNish – three time 24 hr
LeMans winner. One of the things that makes the
Autosport show special is that the fans also get their
chance to put questions to the various guests.
The Performance Car Show runs as part of the same event,
and is packed full of the world's rarest and most expensive
supercars. Main features included the Autocar supercar
display, including the exciting Lamborghini Huracan,
gorgeous BMW i8, powerful Ferrari 458 Special and rare
Vuhl 05.
Always a favourite at the show, the Live Action Arena is the
UK’s largest indoor racetrack. Based in the largest hall of
the NEC and seating 5000 racing fans, the Live Action is a
unique experience with all those wonderful sounds and
smells assaulting your senses – Petrol Head Heaven.
A wide range of classic cars and supercars on display,
including one of the earliest Series 1 Land Rovers and a
Porsche 959 – a twin-turbocharged homologation special
that was once the world's fastest production supercar.
Other highlights include James May's 13 most significant
cars, a live parade section, a homage to the career of Red
Bull designer Adrian Newey, a celebration of 100 years of
Maserati and myriad historic race cars.
A selection of modern cars also feature, including
a Citroen DS3 – as part of the DS brand's
60th anniversary.
Alongside the Citroens, there was everything from a 1920s
Bugatti Type 35B, to a 1990s Bugatti EB110, and from a
1930s Jaguar SS1, to a Jaguar XJ220. There were cars from
the dawn of motoring, including a 1902 Curved Dash
Oldsmobile, and competition cars such as a Group 4 Lancia
Stratos from the 1970s.
While 120 miles to the south a somewhat more mature,
but equally passionate crowd was experiencing the first
London Classic Car Show:
Great marques from all eras exhibits included examples
from Aston Martin, Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, Rolls Royce
and Bentley. There was even a quartet of genuine Formula
One cars from the 1950s to the 1980s, all of which were
driven along the Grand Avenue.
“The capital hasn’t had a traditional classic car show for
years – and it’s never had an event like the this” - Event

The show organisers said that they are hoping to build an
event to rival existing classic car spectaculars in Paris and
Essen – based on this year’s show, the future looks bright.

Success at the
Birkett 6 Hour
Relay Race
Some AutoInsider readers will know that my love of cars
can partly be blamed on my dad, who is a precision
engineer by trade. Well, it’s certainly his fault that I was
at a motor racing circuit at just 6 weeks old, in my pram.
My mother joyfully pushed me around Silverstone’s
perimeters whilst my dad pedalled a Mk 1 Capri in the
team event, back when it was invitation only. That’s right
you had to be a certain standard of driver, thankfully he
was a naturally quick racer although did not do many
events and went on to compete in hill climbs and do
track days. His passion for cars though, building kit cars
and engineering uprated brake kits for classic Triumphs
and engine rebuilds just meant I was totally immersed in
all things petrol head.
It might feel like a slight tangent but the relevance here is that
I returned to the Birkett, only this time not as a sleeping baby,
but with my own race car and a spirit to win. Team Turtle
Wax was led by our number 1 mechanic, Paul Amiss and
included drivers Chris Mills and David Gardener from
AutoRevive London in a Ginetta G27 and Sanjay Talwar with
Adam Dawson in a classic 911. Our first job after deciding
tactics was to ensure all race cars were gleaming! Having a
car care brand as a title sponsor means this is just as
important as winning! Thankfully we have Rhys who is in
charge of this and he did a salient job here.
The race itself is 6 hours long, as the name might suggest,
and success depends on a number of factors including
mechanical sympathy, slick driver and car changes and
consistent lap times without unnecessary risk taking. The
986 Boxster could do longer stints than the 911 and Ginetta
so it was down to Paul to ensure the strategy took this into

account, as well as making sense competitively. My first stint
was 1 hour long and after getting into a comfortable rhythm I
really felt as if I could drive for longer, so with a lot of fuel still
left in the tank I was slightly disappointed that the pit board
was shown for me to come in. Paul knew what he was doing
though and without any delay the next car was out to race!
What makes this a rather special event, other than from the
personal perspective, is that a wide variety of cars with vast
power differences all compete in the same race, albeit in
different classes and it’s a fun season ender. It’s a bit like a
party but for racing drivers, big names including Graham Hill,
Gerry Marshall and even Steve McQueen have joined the
party over the years.
My next stint was longer at 1 hour and 15 minutes and the
physical training must have paid off because it was not a
struggle to cope with. Chris Mills finished with the final stint
and his impeccable driving meant we maintained our lead as
Team Turtle Wax finished 1st in class! This was the perfect
way to end the season.

Make Profits Flow With
Dayco Water Pump Kits
In 2014 Dayco introduced a range of water pump kits to provide Andrew Page
customers with a new opportunity to increase the profit potential that can be
derived from combined timing belt and water pump replacement sales.
The reason behind the addition of water pump kits is the fact that there is a
trend among the vehicle manufacturers to integrate more of their engine
systems, as they pursue the engine emission and fuel consumption reductions
that have been imposed by worldwide legislation. As a result, there are an
increasing number of vehicles with engines that now incorporate the water
pump into the timing drive system, rather than as part of the auxiliary drive
system, hence the requirement for a combined water pump and timing
belt kit programme.
“There is complete logic behind changing both components (water pump and
timing belt) at the same time,” says Dayco UK country manager, Steve Carolan,
“as it provides garages with a profit opportunity and their customers with the
confidence that their vehicle has benefitted from a full and thorough repair.
“Although for the best of intentions, workshops sometimes try to save their
customers money by carrying out a partial repair and replacing only the
component that has failed or is specified for change in the service schedule,
this policy runs the risk of their customers having to face a much larger bill for a
full repair at a later date when the component not replaced goes onto fail.
“Therefore, for peace-of-mind and a cost-effective long-term precaution, as well
as being the most profitable/cost effective outcome for garages and motorists,
Dayco recommend that for all applications that feature a timing belt driven
water pump, they opt for a full timing drive system replacement, rather than
change a failing water pump or timing belt in isolation.”
Dayco offer a comprehensive range of 215 water pump kits that include an
original equipment water pump alongside the usual belt, tensioner and idler
combination. This provides workshops with all the components necessary to
undertake a full water pump and timing drive system replacement.

trade shows AutoInsider Live! are set to visit the rest of
the UK with a series of events across the country in
2015.
Bridging the gap between suppliers and garage
technicians, the one-day regional events outline Andrew
Page's unique approach to the industry and feature live
product and service demonstrations, interactive displays,
supplier exhibitions and technical seminars.
The 2014 shows were attended by over 850 visitors and 45
exhibiting suppliers. Exhibitors varied from suppliers of
parts and tools to those offering training, equipment and
human resource consultancy. Well-known names exhibiting
included Bosch, Mintex, Quinton Hazell, NGK and the IMI.
Technical seminars are provided throughout the day giving
attendees additional insight and advice on common issues
within the Automotive Aftermarket. Further tips and

A five show program for 2015 will cover the majority of the
