WOW! What a way to end 2012 but with a full page article on the CPC in the Sun Journal newspaper. Charlie Hall was generous with the column inches on Thursday December 20th and we owe him big-time for that. It was wonderful to see our work displayed for all the community to see. Our nursing home photo sessions ended on December 9th (see page 4). We received a $200 donation from the Area Agency on Aging for the project and it came just in time. As near as I can tell we broke even on the project, but we’ll know more when we get a financial report that includes all the expenses and income. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped in any way, but special thanks goes to Rick Meyer for organizing the shoots, and to John Steady, Ed Hall and Tom McCabe for the use of the equipment. Several members of the club contributed significant financial amounts to the project and we are grateful for their support. This level of commitment to the project shows just how much heart our members have. By the time you receive this newsletter we’ll know whether or not the Mayan calendar is to be believed Coastal Photo Club News and possibly whether or not as a nation we have gone over the fiscal cliff. I have visions of the final scene from Thelma and Louise when I hear that term! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z88U915uq8 ) But seriously, we hope that you make a New Year’s resolution related to your photography, whether it is to read that instruction book, to try new settings beside automatic, or to use that tripod. If nothing else, promise yourself that you’ll get a little more adventuresome. At our January 12th meeting we will be having a speaker and will be having a hands-on session of cleaning our cameras, lenses, and sensors (if you are brave enough to tackle this), so bring your cleaning gear and instruction book along with camera(s) and lenses. See you at Centenary Methodist Church on Saturday January 12th at 9:30 AM! You’ll find the guidelines for submitting prints to competitions at http://coastalphotoclub.com/ at “competition rules.” No competition was held at the December meeting; rather, slideshows of member work were shown, including a compilation of member photos from the Marine homecomings (produced by John Steady), a visual essay on sailing by Judy Hills, and nature photography by Chuck Colucci. The theme for the January mini-comp is “prosperous.” Coastal Photo Club News CPC welcomes new members The club starts the new year with three new members. We’re glad to have them with us. Hardy Moore, a lifelong New Bern resident, shoots with a Panasonic DMC-GK2, and a Canon 5D MK2. Hardy says: “I have many interests: kayaking (which I have yet to do in spite of having a kayak), gardening (no place to practice), motorcycling, reading financials, shortwave radio, ham radio, cooking (again, no place to practice), bow hunting, collecting cookbooks, learning new languages (not that successful—yet), and traveling.” He joined the CPC to interact with “more experienced” photographers. Jerry Weiss uses a Sony Cybershot DSC HX20V, mostly outdoors. Recently retired, he sees photography as a great hobby. “Thanks for having a friendly club!” Jerry says. Hyeyong Seitz enjoyed the December 8 gift exchange (see page 5). She has lived in South Korea. She became interested in photography a few years ago, and now shoots with a Nikon. Hyeyong hopes that membership in the CPC will help her “learn more and understand more about photography.” January 2013 3 Portrait project winds down for the season The Coastal Photo Club of New Bern provided a record number of complimentary holiday portraits to residents of local nursing homes and a special-needs care facility this year. On December 9, the CPC concluded this season’s effort to provide free, high-quality portraits for appreciative families. Janice Arthur, Mike Carter, Jim Dugan, Ed Hall, Jeanne Julian, Archie Lewis, Tom McCabe, Rick Meyer, Rosemary Osterhus, Alan Welch, Jerry Weiss, and Sue Williams participated in the last shoot, conducted at Two Rivers Healthcare. Mary O’Neill adjusts settings (right), while an extended family (below) assembles for a holiday portrait. The CPC shoots, edits images, places orders, and donates portrait packages to nursing home residents as a community service. “Truly, it was a heartwarming experience to spend time with such a professional and dedicated group of people,” said Sarah Carlton, program director at the Howell Center, in a letter to the club. “We value the outstanding skills and compassion you demonstrated, negotiating those unique challenges faced when assisting our service users.” The sessions were conducted over several days in November and December. As many as a dozen volunteer photographers worked at each session, setting up backdrops, lighting, and holiday decorations; welcoming and posing subjects; and shooting and processing the photos. Sherrie Hitchcock Hudson and Pawnlynn O’Connor, representatives of Mary Kay cosmetics, assisted the photo club by helping subjects with “touch ups” to look their best for the camera. Because the photographers volunteer their services, the only expense is printing the photographs. Donations by private individuals and several local organizations have helped cover these costs. The Club welcomes any individual or organization who would like to help fund the project, which is coordinated by Rick Meyer, CPC vice president. “Rick does a wonderful job. This is the third year for this service project, and it continues to be valued by everyone involved,” Hills said. “Our members get experience with this type of shooting, while nursing home residents get free portrait packages to share at the holidays. They’re often on limited incomes and separated from their friends and loved ones, so it means a lot to them.” Mary Beth Seidenfield happily displayed the new photograph of herself and her mother in her mother’s room, and requested extra prints for relatives. “It is interesting to see the change over time with others of the two of us that we have hung there,” she said. “It was a very nice thing to do over the holidays.” According to president Judy Hills, volunteers shot and processed studio-quality photographs of hundreds of residents and dozens of dedicated staff in five in-house sessions at Rivercrest, Bayview, Two Rivers Neuse Campus, Two Rivers Trent Campus, and the Howell Center. This was the first year that the CPC included Rivercrest and the Howell Center in the service project. At the Howell Center alone, over the course of one Sundayclub photographers managed to capture portraits of 125 residents, all of whom require specialized long-term care. The timing “coincides with the birds sporting their prime breeding plumage and courtship behavior.” A previous participant’s testimonial described this workshop as “a fantastic experience. The attention and one-on-one instruction with each attendee was well above what I have experienced with other workshops.” The schedule includes instruction, two full days of shooting, nightly image reviews and “gentle” critiques, and social time. Space is limited to 12 photographers. The fee of $410 per person does not include lodging and meals. For more information on this and other workshops see http://awakethelight.com/. How’d Ya Do That? by Susan Williams If you are feeling adventurous and want to experiment with some of your images, consider downloading the Pixel Bender plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. It’s free and offers a wide range of possibilities for treatment of images in the Visionary category. It also offers subtle possibilities, depending on how you use the adjustments. I have Photoshop CS5, so I used the plug-in for that version; here is the link: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/pixelbenderplu gin/ The page gives you step-by-step instructions for installation. Once you have the plug-in installed, just open Photoshop, open an image, go to the “filter” dropdown menu, locate Pixel Bender and choose a filter. I played around with the Escher Droste filter, which Coastal Photo Club News Do you have an idea for “How’d ya do that?”? Send us your sample shots and explanation. Filmmaker to lecture on storied New Bern photographer Bayard Wootten Anthony Lilly, a producer and film writer in Seattle with roots in Eastern North Carolina, is planning to make a film about New Bern’s most famous photographer, Bayard Wootten. She is considered a pioneer among independent and working women and noted for her innovative, artistic portrayals of working people and Southern architecture. Lilly will be in New Bern to discuss Wooten’s life and work on January 17 at 2 p.m. in Cullman Hall at the North Carolina History Center. Along with facts about Wootten and a select scene or two from his script, Anthony and guests will discuss images made by the photographer that are in the collection of Tryon Palace. Admission is free. “Bayard Wootten: The Big Stride” is the working title for Lilly’s script. “This will be my first film,” Lilly said in a recent telephone interview with Charlie Hall of the Sun Journal. “I’ve written pilots and been a producer for a long time.” His career in the film industry began with photography and artwork, doing head shots for actors and set photography, including work with Sesame Street. During a visit to New Bern three years ago to see his uncle, he got the idea for the Wootten project. “I was walking around with my camera and saw Bayard’s house and I just fell in love and went over and introduced myself and became friends with the family,” he recalled. “The project went from there. I asked permission to write the script and the whole family is on board.” He is working also with the support of the Pepsi company, for whom Wootten designed the original logo, and with the Wright Brothers museum. Wootten was the first woman to take a photograph from an airplane.
