March-April 2016 - Women`s Club of Glen Ridge
Signpost The Newsletter of The Women’s Club of Glen Ridge March/April 2016 Vol. 56 No. 3 Local Author to Speak at March Monthly Meeting Tuesday, March 1st at 7:30pm The Literature Department is pleased to announce that Elisabeth Egan, author of A Window Opens, will speak at our Tuesday, March 1st monthly meeting. Ms. Egan is the books editor at Glamour. Her essays and book reviews have appeared in Self, Glamour, O, People, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, Huffington Post, the New York Times Book Review, LA Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Chicago SunTimes and the Newark Star-Ledger. She lives in Montclair with her husband and three children. A Window Opens chronicles the busy life of Alice Pearse, a working mother of three children whose work-family balance is challenged when she takes a job at a hip, young start-up that promises to be the future of reading. The Holy Grail of working mothers – an intellectually satisfying job and a happy personal life – seems suddenly within reach. But, is it? To RSVP, please visit the Club’s website at www.womensclubglenridge.com, send an email to [email protected] or call the Club office at 973-748-5459. Registration for members is complimentary; $5 for non-members. Doors open at 7:30pm for light refreshments. Ms. Egan will speak at 8:00pm. To add to the evening’s fun, raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win a box of not-yet-released galley copies of some new titles for 2016 and an autographed copy of A Window Opens. Save the Date! Henry Chapman Night is March 18th! Explore the world of small batch distilling. Our inaugural Holiday Sing-Along was a joyous success, with delicious food, enthusiastic singing, and a memorable evening for all. The odds look good for making this an annual event! I hope you all have finally dug out of our latest Storm of the Century! I admire the quick thinking and zero-hour rescheduling of our Hospitality and Social Committees to save the Delicious Winter Cocktail Party. We had a hale and hearty crowd turn out to celebrate the approaching blizzard with gusto and joie di vivre. These two events exemplify the pleasure we all share as members of the vibrant community of the Women’s Club. Looking ahead, we have a rich roster of events blowing in with the Spring winds. We are starting the month of March with a change in our traditional calendar. Our monthly meeting and program will be a special evening event. Beginning at 7:30, we will gather to enjoy some refreshments and then at 8:00 we will welcome Montclair author Elisabeth Egan, who will speak about her novel A Window Opens. I hope many of you who are not usually able to join us in the middle of the day will come to your Club for this stimulating program sponsored by the Literature Department. March also brings us the Favorite Doll Tea on March 13th. This event has become an institution at the Women’s Club, as we find ourselves bursting at the seams with the younger set in their party-finest with dolls in tow. This is a wonderful chance to introduce our friends and neighbors with young children to our Club. Extend an invitation today! And speaking of members, March is the month we celebrate our Associate Members. Friday, March 18th at 7:30pm is Henry Chapman Night, the night we set aside each year to honor the legacy of Henry Chapman, the man who gifted us our beautiful clubhouse as a tribute to his wife Emily. Let’s pack the Club to bursting with members and our associate members who support us in so many ways! This is just a sampling of the events coming up at the Women’s Club. As you read through this edition, I hope you take the time to ink us in on your calendars. Make a date now to “Connect, Share, and Celebrate!” Warmly, Jill Mark your calendar. !"#$%&'()*$+,,'-&$.##/0,1$0,$.-2$0*$130,1$/3$(#$ -,$#4#,0,1$-55-067$!'#*8-29$.-2$:68$-/$;<==>?@$ A0,,#6$53&&3B#8$(2$3'6$+,,'-&$.##/0,17$A#/-0&*$ /3$53&&3B@$ April Monthly Meeting Tuesday, April 5th at 12:00pm It’s April in Paris! Please join the Music Committee for a program of French-themed food and music on April 5th at 12:00pm. French-style foods will be prepared by our committee (think Bistro!) and we will be joined by Steven Graff; renowned piano recitalist, chamber musician, music history scholar, and teacher. His repertoire will include classical French works by Debussy, Saint-Saens, Rameau, Faure, and Satie; works written by Chopin in Paris; and French-inspired popular songs. Come hear favorites such as "La Vie En Rose" and "I Love Paris." Steven will also give us some context and discuss French music of the time. Mr. Graff debuted with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees as a Petschek scholarship awardee at The Julliard School, and his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from The Graduate School of CUNY. He has toured, recorded, and performed all over the world and currently serves on the faculty at New York’s Hunter College, at The Macaulay Honors College, and at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. We are very pleased and privileged to have him come out to Glen Ridge for this event. Members: $15.00 Non-Members: $20.00 Program only: $5.00/Non-members, Free to Members Doors will open at 12:00pm for luncheon. The program will begin at 1:00pm. In between movements of this masterpiece actors from Glen Ridge High School's drama club will read letters from Mozart's own writing. Don’t miss this unique presentation of one of the greatest works for string trio ever written. February 28th at 7:00pm in the glorious acoustics of the Georgian Room. January also saw the girls volunteering at the Church On the Green Soup Kitchen and at MESH. In February the girls volunteered at the Gas Lamp Production of Mary Poppins. They helped by selling tickets and ushering audience members to their seats. Our work at MESH and in the Church On the Green Soup Kitchen continued through February. SAVE THE DATE: The annual spring Fashion Show will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 PM at the Women’s Club. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Local Assistance Advisory Committee to help local families in need, COPE and the American Red Cross. Every year this event is a lot of fun for both the Girls’ Club members and everyone in the audience! You can always check out what our book groups are reading on the Club’s web site at: http://www.womensclubglenridge.com/momsbookgroup.html What has the Community Service Committee been up to? The Community Service Committee wants to thank all those who attended our Annual Luncheon on Tuesday, February 2nd. You provided an enthusiastic reception for our speakers: Dr. Nadine Pappas and Janet Lesko of the Connie Dwyer Breast Center, and Carol Berger and Ashley Pires of Wynona’s House. Wynona’s House was established 15 years ago to serve and seek justice for abused and neglected children in Essex County. As Ms. Pires noted, child abuse is a major social crisis that affects all socio-economic lines. As many as 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will experience some type of abuse during their childhoods. Wynona’s House is special because it provides advocacy for its clients in one setting. This may include law enforcement, protection, counseling and medical services. The Connie Dwyer Breast Center at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark was founded in 2004 with the mission of providing advanced and comprehensive breast care to all women, but especially to AfricanAmerican and Hispanic women. African-American and Hispanic women typically have lower survival rates from breast cancer because they have less access to affordable care. The Connie Dwyer Center turns no woman away and hopes to expand its facility in the near future. The Community Service Committee’s next function will be the annual Red Cross Blood Drive on March 23rd. It is anticipated that, yet again, our quota of 40 pints of blood will be exceeded. Donating blood is an easy and satisfying way to provide for your community. Your effort is even rewarded with soup, sandwiches, and baked goods! Mark your calendar now.
