Major Changes for Provincial Tournaments
Golf Saskatchewan announced in early April major changes to four provincial championships
beginning with the 2012 tournament season.
Beginning this year, the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships and the Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s & Mid-Amateur Championships will move
from the previous four-day format to now operate under a three-day format.
“As an association we continually to strive to evolve based on the feedback we receive,” said
Dan Ukrainetz, Manager of Tournaments and Player Services for Golf Saskatchewan. “Consistently what we have heard is that the players would prefer a three-day format. We anticipate
that the fields will continue to grow with players from across the province.”
In addition, both tournaments, as well as, the Amateur Men’s Championship and the Senior
Men’s & Women’s Championships will begin play on the Monday of the tournament week.
The Amateur Men’s Championship will remain as a four-day event, while the Senior Men’s
& Women’s Championships will continue to operate as a three-day event, having previously
changed in 2007.
The final two tournaments of the Golf Saskatchewan tournaments season are the Saskatchewan Women’s Rosebowl Championship and the Saskatchewan Mixed Team Championship.
The Women’s Rosebowl Championship will continue to operate as a mid-week event in early
August. The Mixed Team Championship once again will close out the Golf Saskatchewan
tournament schedule on the final weekend of August.
Golf Saskatchewan Introduces
Junior Team Championship
Golf Saskatchewan, in partnership with the
CPGA (Canadian Professional Golf Association) of
Saskatchewan, announced in April the creation
of a junior men’s team championship and a
junior women’s team championship as part of
the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s &
Women’s Championships beginning in 2012.
The junior men’s competition will have teams
consisting of three golfers. The lower two scores
from each hole will make up the team score for
that hole to be accumulated over the full 18
holes each day of competitive play. The team with the lowest score over the three days of
the championship will be crowned the Saskatchewan Junior Men’s Team Champion.
The junior women’s competition will have teams consisting of two golfers. The lowest
single score from each hole will make up the team score for that hole to be accumulated
over the full 18 holes each day of competitive play. Just like the junior men’s event, the
team with the lowest score over the three days of the championship will be crowned the
Saskatchewan Junior Women’s Team Champion.

Players competing in the Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Team Championships will
also be eligible to win the individual competition of the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior
Men’s & Women’s Championships and receive the chance to represent Saskatchewan at
the Canadian Junior Boys Championship and the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship respectively.
This year’s SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships and Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Team Championships will be held at The Legends Golf
Club in Warman, July 2nd-4th.
“We are excited to incorporate a team championship with our provincial juniors,” said Phil
Grosse, Manager of Sport Development & Marketing for Golf Saskatchewan. “This initiative encourages golf clubs to invest in the future at their club and to provide opportunities
for kids to develop, play, and have fun with the sport. The best junior golf tournament in
Saskatchewan just got a lot more fun for everyone involved in junior golf.”

Golf Saskatchewan has announced mulitiple changes to each of the Saskatchewan Order

Starting with junior golf, participants aged from 13-18 will have their top four point totals
from playing in events accounted for as well as the point totals they earn from playing in
the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s & Women’s Championships and the SGI CANADA Junior Order of Merit Tour Championship. This means participants 13-18 can account

MNP Men’s Order of Merit Tour
On the MNP Men’s Order of Merit Tour, a participant’s top four point totals from participating in events will be accounted as well as the point total they earn from playing in the Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship. This means the top four point totals accumulated from the competition calendar, plus the Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship
will count towards a participants overall point total for the MNP Men’s Order of Merit Tour.
Women’s Order of Merit Tour
On the women’s tour, a participant’s top four point totals from participating in events will
be accounted for as well as the point total they earn from playing in the Saskatchewan
Amateur Women’s Championship or the Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Championship.

Championship will count towards a participant’s overall points total.
Senior Men’s Order of Merit Tour
For the Senior Men’s Order of Merit Tour, a participant’s top four point totals from participating in events will be accounted for as well as the point total they earn from playing in the Saskatchewan Senior Men’s Championship. This means the top four point

Golf Saskatchewan Annual General Meeting
Held; Moe Martin Elected New President
Golf Saskatchewan held its 2012 Annual General Meeting on Saturday, April 14th at The
Willows Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon. Over 50 delegates from across the province
attended the meeting with discussion and updates about the growth and development of
amateur golf in Saskatchewan.
The CPGA of Saskatchewan
members are great partners
of Golf Saskatchewan. We are
thankful to the golf professionals who provide instruction to
golfers across Saskatchewan
through programs like the CN
Future Links Mobile Clinics
presented by SaskTel and the
National Golf in Schools program. It is encouraging to note
that many of our province’s
golf professionals have branded their own junior programs
as Future Links programs.
For more information about
the CPGA of Saskatchewan visit
www.cpgasask.com.
Amongst those in attendance included Blair Armitage, Golf Canada’s Regional Director of
Membership for Western Canada; Ken Morrow, Executive Director of the PGA of Canada –
Saskatchewan Branch; and Warren Proctor, Golf Liason for Sask Sport Inc.
As part of the proceedings, Golf Saskatchewan officially announced a complete change to
all branding and legal designation from the Saskatchewan Golf Association. With that, all
parts to the bylaws of the association now reflect the change in title.
Regina’s Moe Martin, a member of the Royal Regina Golf Club,
was elected President for Golf Saskatchewan for 2012. Martin
will take over from Dave Forster of Tisdale, who concluded
his one-year term as President. Meanwhile, Byron Harvie of
Riverside Estates concluded his term as Past President for the
organization.
The 2012 Golf Saskatchewan Board of Directors consists of:
President: Moe Martin, Regina
Vice President: Richard Smith, Katepwa
Treasurer (VP): Terry Gaube, Lumsden
Past President: Dave Forster, Tisdale
Director: Wendy Besplug, Kindersley
Director: Donna Kovatch, White City
Director: Crystal Thiessen, Regina
Director: Mark Galambos, Saskatoon
Director: Dennis Lang, Regina
Golf Saskatchewan wishes to thank each of the delegates for being in attendance, each of
the dignitaries who were in attendance, and The Willows Golf & Country Club for hosting
the event.
Holiday Park Golf Course Celebrates 50 Years
Arnold Palmer won his third Green Jacket at Augusta and his
second consecutive Claret Jug. Gary Player won his first of two
PGA Championships. And a kid from Ohio named Jack Nicklaus
won his first U.S. Open title, after finishing second two years
earlier as an amateur.
The year was 1962 and the golf scene in Saskatoon changed
considerably with the opening of the brand new Holiday Park
Golf Course just west of the Saskatchewan River and not far
from the city’s downtown core.
Peter Semko, a name synonymous with golf in the Saskatoon area, led a group of individuals that also included John McAskill, Len Harvey, and Saskatoon Alderman Blair Nelson
beginning in 1960 that looked into developing the area at the site of the former Wellington Park sand greens course to become a new grass greens city-owned course. Clinton E.
Robinson of Toronto, who apprenticed under the legendary Stanley Thompson, oversaw
the final design and construction.

- The latest in the 2012 golf season
- Much, much more!
The course opened on June 27th, 1962 with Semko serving as the city’s manager and
Director of Golf for 15 years.
In 1975, the Executive 9 Hole Golf Course opened to the public at Holiday Park, which was
itself designed by Semko. The Executive course is described on the Holiday Park website
as being a course “that provides an intermediate level of play for golfers who want a quick
round without having to reserve a starting time”.
Even though the course is considered “city-owned” it has been completely self-sufficient
since its opening and contrary to popular belief does not receive any tax exemptions from
any level of government.
The course has hosted five Golf Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Golf Association) events
through the years as well as the 1976 Saskatchewan Open.
In recent years, Holiday Park has been active in trying to allow for affordable golf for participants in Saskatoon. Throughout the 2012 50th anniversary season the course will offer
a special “Pay for 9 – Play 18” rate on Monday, where golfers will only have to pay for nine
holes in order to play 18. In addition, the course is offering a Club 6 Pack Card, which gives
golfers six rounds of golf for the price of five.
With the expected opening of a new bridge across the Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon’s
south side in 2013, access to Holiday Park Golf Course will have never been easier.
And just like how Holiday Park Golf Course changed the golf scene in Saskatoon considerably in 1962, the hope is that a new bridge in the course’s 51st year will make the golf
scene at Holiday Park Golf Course busier than ever.
Rotary Masters Golf Pool Final Rankings
Bubba Watson claimed his first Green Jacket in early April in a playoff over
Louis Oosthuizen in the 76th edition of the Masters Tournament. For
some, choosing Watson to win the title turned into a very clever decision
and one that won them a lot of money in the 2012 Rotary Masters Golf
Pool. Indicated below are the top 9 finishers in the Pool.
Thank you to every who took part in the 2012 Rotary Masters Golf Pool and for supporting
junior golf in Saskatchewan.
