4HIS PATTERN GIVES NEW MEANING TO hSTACKING
AND WHACKINGv 5NLIKE THE POPULAR PATTERN
TO WHICH THAT PHRASE REFERS THIS TECHNIQUE
REQUIRES NO CAREFUL LAYERING FUSSYCUTTING
OR EXAMINATION OF PATTERN REPEATS ) HAVE
EXPERIMENTED WITH SEVERAL VARIATIONS ON THIS
TECHNIQUE 3OMETIMES ) SLASH THE SQUARES IN
CURVED LINES IN THE MANNER OF .ANCY #ROW
3OMETIMES WHEN ) SET THE BLOCKS ) ALTERNATE
THE TIPSY BLOCKS WITH PLAIN SQUARES OF FABRIC
)F YOU PLAN AHEAD YOU CAN MAKE STARS TREES
AND OTHER SHAPES 0LAY WITH IT AND HAVE FUN
Make It Easy
s 4HIS PATTERN WORKS BEST IF YOU CHOOSE AT LEAST
NINE FABRICS THAT ARE VISUALLY DISTINCT FROM ONE
ANOTHER "Y THIS ) MEAN THAT WHEN YOU PLACE
THE FABRICS NEXT TO EACH OTHER THE EDGES ARE
APPARENT THE FABRICS DO NOT BLUR TOGETHER )F
YOU USE MORE THAN NINE FABRICS YOU MUST
INCREASE IN MULTIPLES OF THREE TWELVE lFTEEN
EIGHTEEN BECAUSE YOU NEED NINE DIFFERENT
FABRICS TO MAKE EACH BLOCK $EPENDING ON THE
SIZE OF QUILT YOU MAKE THIS MAY RESULT IN ONE
OR TWO LEFTOVER BLOCKS *UST SAVE THE LEFTOVERS
FOR ANOTHER PROJECT OR INCORPORATE THEM INTO
THE BACKING
s 3EWING 4IPSY .INE 0ATCH BLOCKS IS FAST9OUR
PIECES DO NOT HAVE TO BE CUT EXACTLY TO THE CORRECT
MEASUREMENTS4HEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE STACKED
PERFECTLY 9OUR SEAMS DO NOT NEED TO BE ACCURATE
OR EVEN )F THE EDGES OF THE SEWN BLOCKS ARE TOO
RAGGED YOU WILL TRIM THEM4HERE IS ONLY ONE LITTLE
THING YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT
!FTER YOU SLASH THE SQUARES AND SEW THE
SEGMENTS TOGETHER BE VERY VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU
DO NOT TURN OR mIP THE INDIVIDUAL PIECES ) TAKE A
VERY SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO SEWING THESE BLOCKS
SLASHING ARRANGING AND STITCHING ONE GROUP BEFORE
GOING ON TO THE NEXT
s &OR EVERY SQUARE YOU START WITH YOU WILL GET ONE
.INE 0ATCH BLOCK4HE lNISHED .INE 0ATCH BLOCK
WILL BE ABOUT ž SMALLER THAN YOUR ORIGINAL
SQUARE &OR EXAMPLE IF YOU CUT ž SQUARES TO START
YOUR lNISHED BLOCKS WILL MEASURE ABOUT )F YOU
START WITH ž SQUARES YOUR lNISHED BLOCKS WILL
MEASURE ABOUT s ,AP TWIN AND DOUBLE QUILTS START WITH ž SQUARES
QUEEN AND KINGSIZE QUILTS START WITH ž SQUARES

0UT THE SQUARES OF EACH FABRIC INTO A SEPARATE PILE
$IVIDE THE PILES INTO GROUPS WITH DIFFERENT
FABRICS IN EACH GROUP9OU WILL HAVE TO GROUPS
DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT FABRICS YOU
ARE USING IN THE QUILT .UMBER THE FABRICS IN EACH
GROUP n
0ICK ANY ONE OF THE GROUPS TO BEGIN 3TACK A
SQUARE OF FABRIC A SQUARE OF FABRIC AND A
SQUARE OF FABRIC RIGHT SIDES FACING UP
4 Basic Tipsy Nine Patch Quilt
7ITH A ROTARY CUTTER AND RULER SLICE VERTICALLY
ACROSS THE STACK TWICE DIVIDING THE SQUARES INTO
SEGMENTS ) USE A RULER TO GET A STRAIGHT CUT AND
TO STABILIZE THE FABRIC -AKE THE CUTS AT DIFFERENT
ANGLES AND MAKE SURE THE PIECES ARE NO NARROWER
THAN AT ANY POINT
3EPARATE THE SEGMENTS IN THE CENTER OF THE CUT
SQUARES IN THE SAME MANNER LAYING THE PIECES
BESIDE THE SEGMENTS FROM THE LEFTHAND SIDE OF
THE SQUARES 2EPEAT FOR THE SEGMENTS ON THE
RIGHTHAND SIDE OF THE CUT SQUARES LAYING THE
PIECES BESIDE THE SEGMENTS FROM THE CENTER
!RRANGE THE PIECES SO THE FABRIC DOES NOT APPEAR
MORE THAN ONCE IN ANY ROW
3EPARATE THE SEGMENTS ON THE LEFTHAND SIDE OF
THE CUT SQUARES AND PLACE THEM IN VERTICAL ROWS
AS SHOWN "E CERTAIN THE ORIENTATION OF EACH
SEGMENT REMAINS THE SAME $O NOT ROTATE OR mIP
THE PIECES
