We have two wonderful workshops planned for this month: one to be given by Theresa Lafleur on repotting; and, the other to be given by David Kalb on what to do to bring your orchids outside for the summer. This meeting will also entail a social period. Light refreshments (cake) will be served at coffee break, as a thank you to all who participated in the show. To celebrate the end of a successful orchid year, a potluck will be held in the second part of the meeting. Members are invited to bring their goodies, finger food, sweets and treats. We will also be holding a raffle as well as a silent auction of some of the books remaining in our society library. There will be two special presentations and we will also be holding elections for the position of President and Vice President. Members are invited, actually very much encouraged, to bring blooming orchids to the May show table. It would be great to see what you have in bloom and most certainly the new members will appreciate viewing your beauties. Monthly meetings will resume beginning in September. Don’t forget to bring your blooming orchids to our monthly show table. The Ottawa Orchid Society meets every third Sunday of every month from September to May inclusive at 1:30 P.M. at the Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview, Ottawa. Guests are welcome. MEMBERSHIP: $25 from September 1 - August 31. MESSAGE FROM INTERIM PRESIDENT – JEAN HOLLEBONE The Ottawa Orchid Show The Board and Show Committee would like to thank all the Ottawa members, friends, family including better halves, who so cheerfully gave of their time and volunteered at the Ottawa Orchid Show. Many put in very long hours both before and during the Show, others gave generously of what time they had to help. We appreciate all the help we received, every volunteer contributes a valuable piece of the total action and without you the Show simply could not go on. The general consensus is that 2012 was a very successful show. There were some minor glitches, some medical emergencies, some very happy ribbon and trophy winners, and some exhausted hospitality, security and admissions folks!! The raffle brought in more than at any time in its history! And the Ottawa plant table did a rousing business in both plants and books. Thank you all and to all the behind the scene workers (publicity, signs, set up, ribbon and trophy orders, wine gourmand, exhibitors, photographers, ribbon judging, set up and take down, etcetera). You may not be highly visible but all of these functions are essential for success! The Show had 76 individual, company and society exhibitors and 622 exhibits and plants were registered. Twenty six plants were pulled for AOS judging and 14 were awarded: 4 Awards of Merit, 3 Certificates of Cultural Merit, 4 Highly Commented Certificates, 1 Judges' Commendation, 1 for Education Display and 1 Silver Trophy. The Art Gallery was very successful with over 62 exhibitors and over 160 pieces of art and many pieces sold. The winners will be posted on the Society’s web site. Congratulations to all the winners. Thank you all. I think people enjoyed themselves and while the final figures are still being tabulated, the initial guestimate is that we will clear our expenses and make a modest profit. By the May meeting, we should have a firmer handle on the numbers. This is very good news, as it gives us additional flexibility for next season in bringing in speakers and offering other activities that make the society interesting for members. Note: If you have items for which you need to be reimbursed, please get them to Janet Johns as soon as possible so she may pay you and get them entered in the books. Also, as he does every year, Dave Cooper would like to receive comments on the Show from Show Committee chairs and from anyone who has suggestions for improvement for next year. These comments are amalgamated in a summary report which is used to start off next year’s show planning. Again thank you everyone. It was a splendid effort. SOOS Summerfest Each year the Southern Ontario Orchid Society (SOOS) hosts a mid-summer meeting at the Toronto Botanical Garden on the Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend. This year the day is Sunday August 5, and it starts with AOS judging at 9 a.m. followed by a pot luck lunch hosted by SOOS (the desserts are fabulous!!) followed by presentations by invited speakers. This year the invitee is Phil Spence from Australia who will give two talks on Australian orchids, one on Dendrobiums and Sarcochilus (we think) and the other on Orchids of Australia. As well he will be bringing plants as preordered. Terry Kennedy will give us the order list as soon as she gets it and we will make it available to OOS members. This is going to be an outstanding meeting and those of you who want to learn firsthand about Australian Dendrobiums and other orchids may wish to attend. Terry has extended an invitation to Ottawa members to attend, and especially suggests that we bring our summer bloomers for AOS judging and observe the judging process. She wants to know ahead who is coming for planning purposes. For those who plan to arrive the night before on Saturday, you are invited to the Kennedy’s for an evening barbecue. You would be expected to contribute to the meal (with food not money) and Terry must know ahead who is coming. All orchid lovers are welcome. As you know the SOOS show this year was cancelled due to construction in the parking lot. It is still under construction but we hope it will be finished by August. If not, you may have to park on side streets and walk over to the Gardens. Terry says that if you come for the early morning judging there may be limited parking spots available. Visit to Purdon Fen Each year, several thousand showy ladyslippers, Cypripedium reginae, burst into bloom at Purdon Fen, weather permitting around the third week-end of June. The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority posts the peak blooming time on their web site so all can enjoy these beautiful orchids. Do consider taking a Sunday afternoon drive and bringing a picnic to the fen to take a walk on the boardwalk to see and photograph these blooming beauties. As well as ladyslippers, there are other orchids and interesting bog plants like pitcher plants in bloom at this time. There may also be a few hungry mosquitoes, so bring repellent. For those who are interested, I will provide directions to the Fen in the June Spike and will indicate a day/ time to meet for those who may enjoy a picnic together. I will also lead a group walk for any who are interested to point out other orchids and indigenous plants in the fen. 2 Annual Audit Every year end (June), the Ottawa Orchid Society financial statements are audited. This year, Hélène Martin has graciously agreed to conduct the audit so that we may present an audited statement of account to the Society in early autumn for the 2011-12 Year. Thank you, Hélène, and thank you, Janet Johns and André Couture, for preparing the data for audit. Jean Hollebone ******************** NEWS UPDATE Update from the American Orchid Society (AOS) Members’ and Trustees’ Meeting recently held in Wichita, Kansas. Elections have been held for the new AOS Officers for the upcoming 2012-2014 period. Jean Hollebone is the new AOS Secretary. She is also an AOS Trustee (2011-2014). Mario Ferrusi (Marsh Hollow) is also a Trustee (2012-2015) and chair of the Governance Committee. Biographical information about all AOS trustees and officers are on the AOS webpage (www.aos.org). Congratulations to Joyce Medcalf who has been confirmed as an AOS orchid judge, along with Gail Schwartz, and André Couture who has been elevated from student judge to probationary judge. ******************** LOST AND FOUND The potting materials left behind at the March meeting have still not been claimed. If you own it you may claim it at the May meeting or by calling Jean Hollebone (home tel. # 613-226-2395) who has this material. If not claimed, it will be donated to the September auction. ******************** SUMMER OPEN HOUSE TOURS If you are planning a summer “open house” of your orchid grow area please advise Rick Sobkowicz (Spike editor) as soon as possible. He will announce the details in the June Newsletter. To date, there are two open houses: Janet John: Open house is June 16 from 1-3pm. Janet grows a variety of orchids in a solarium approx. 6' x 17' facing east and with a high sodium on a track in the winter. Here address is 149 St. Laurent Blvd., Ottawa. Lynne Guimont & Santos Peixe: They are having their traditional Bar-B-Q on July 8th and in case of rain, the event will be held the following Sunday. ******************** LIBRARY Following a discussion and vote by OOS members at the April meeting, there was a majority decision to disband the library. Some library books were sold by way of a silent auction at the April meeting following the vote with other auctions to follow at subsequent meetings. Photo on right shows a number of members examining the books in the silent auction at the April meeting. Members are invited to look over the list of books in the Society library on the OOS web site and to make a reasonable offer if interested in purchasing anything. Books were also sold at the Members Sale Table at the April show. In keeping with the members’ decision of the disposal of the OOS library, the following books will be offered for sale 3 through a silent auction at the May 2012 meeting. Orchids of Asia Orchids of Brazil Growing Orchids More Cymbidiums Orchid Seedling Care Orchids of North America The Orchid Grower’s Manual The Orchids of British Columbia Lycaste, Anguloa – A Cultural Guide A Practical Guide to Care and Cultivation – ORCHIDS How to Control Orchid Viruses – The Complete Guide How does a silent auction work? How does it differ from a traditional auction? At a traditional auction, the bidding on an item continues until the auctioneer cannot get any higher bid and the item is sold to the highest bidder. In a silent auction, there is a bid sheet for each item that is being auctioned where bidders can write down the amount they are prepared to pay. Some silent auction organizers may declare when the silent auction is to end. However, a downside to this approach is that people may refrain from writing down their bids until the very last moment. This can result in a sudden rush of people to the bidding table eager to write down their bids. Sometimes, unpleasantness can arise at this point if people are hampered from being able to write down their bids. Many auction organizers refrain from stating when the auction is to end, and simply make an announcement that the auction has ended and the items go to the people who have written down their highest price. We used this last approach at the April meeting. The bids placed were very reasonable. We will continue conducting future silent auctions in the same fashion unless announced otherwise. So, if you are interested in being a successful bidder, you are encouraged to write down the highest price you are prepared to pay and hope you are successful. The money raised from the sale of the Society’s library books will be turned into the Society’s operating fund and used to pay for visiting monthly speakers and other OOS activities of interest to the general membership. ******************** RETURN OF LIBRARY BOOKS If you have any books or any other items borrowed from the Society library, these items should be brought to the May meeting and left at the side table next to Membership. Thank you, Janet Johns, for looking after the return of these items. SHOW EXPENSES As mentioned by Jean Hollebone, members are urged to submit their show expense claims that remain to be paid by the Society so that we can wind up this year’s finances. Please submit these claims to Janet John at the May meeting. If you are unable to do so, please contact Janet by e-mail or phone to advise her of what you have that remains to be paid. Janet advises that thanks to a great show raffle, more vendor tables and good attendance on the Sunday of our show, it looks like we have made a respectable show profit. The financial results of our show will be posted in the June 2012 Spike. FRED CLARKE (Sunset Valley Orchids, California) IN LONDON, ONTARIO The London Orchid Society (LOS) is pleased to announce that Fred Clarke from Sunset Valley Orchids, th Vista, California http://www.sunsetvalleyorchids.com/ will be the LOS speaker at their Sunday, June 17 , 2012, meeting beginning at 2:00 PM. The meeting will be held in the amphitheatre of the St. Joseph's Regional Mental Health Care London (The London Psychiatric Hospital) located at 850 Highbury Avenue, London, Ontario. All members of Canadian orchid societies are invited to attend. Fred will be speaking on mini Cattleya. http://los.lon.imag.net/DetlJun.asp You may pre-order plants directly from the Sunset Valley Website, be aware that Fred's CITES only covers Cattleya and Catasetinae only, limit your orders to those groups. He will have a very limited number of additional plants for sale at the meeting. If there is a specific plant you want, pre-order it to ensure you are not disappointed. It is your responsibility to arrange for pick up in London. Ordering details, payment options and a list of the orchids available for sale may be viewed by going to the LOS' website at http://los.lon.imag.net/meetings.asp . Fred can only sell Cattleyas and Catisetinae genera as these are the only orchids Fred’s CITES covers for import into Canada. Fred will cover all shipping, taxes and customs fees. 4 th Make sure all pre-orders are clearly identified with the person’s name/Society/Country/Event and June 17 date. Canadian funds and credit cards are fine but if anyone wants to pay by cheque, it must be in U.S. funds. Payments can be made upon pick-up. Fred will not be bringing many other plants, other than the pre-ordered ones. Cut- off st date is June 1 . ******************** ORCHID SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN JOURNAL For those OOS members who are subscribers to the ORCHID SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN JOURNAL, you are in for a treat. Margaret Haydon has just recently received the bulk subscription, and each person subscribing to this publication will be getting a beautiful supplement, Paphiopedilum Species – The Essential Guide, produced by Henry Oakeley and Guido Braem. The supplement is filled with many beautiful pictures of the Slipper Orchids of Asia with a brief description of each orchid’s background and growing conditions. If you are receiving this journal through Margaret, she will be bringing everybody’s subscription to the May meeting and you can pick up both the beautiful quarterly OSGB Journal along with the Paphiopedilum Species supplement from Margaret. ******************** THANKS TO OUR APRIL SPEAKERS! Our grateful thanks to our April speakers who gave brief presentations on different segments of our April show. Dave Cooper, our Show Chairman since 1993 (an impressive 19 years!), gave an insight into the show preparations and a view of the entire show layout. Henry Steger looks after all the plant and exhibit registrations at the show and explained what people needed to do to register their items if the plants and exhibits were to be included in the ribbon judging. Detailed lists are prepared before the judging begins which are given to the judges and judging teams identifying the different items under each category and where they are located on the show floor. If you fail to register your entry or do it improperly, it may not get judged and fail to win a ribbon or award. Joyce Medcalf gave an excellent presentation on how to prepare your plants and exhibit. There are some very beautiful and prestigious awards handed out at the show for exhibits and Joyce imparted important tips on how to prepare an exhibit and avoid doing certain things that may detract from the appearance of your exhibit. André Couture also gave a presentation on show preparations and Roy John, who looked after the Member’s Sale Table, explained what members were required to do if they wished to sell their personal plants at the show. Thank you, everyone, for your work and information. As a temporary measure, Jean Hollebone, the Society’s Vice President, was appointed by the Board as Interim President. This action resulted in a Vice President vacancy. At Jean’s request, we will hold an interim general election at our upcoming May meeting to elect a new President and Vice President. The persons who will be elected will serve for one year until we hold our general elections in May 2013. At present, Jean Hollebone is serving as Interim President until a President is elected at the May meeting (May 20, 2012). Jean has agreed to run for the position of Society President. The position of Vice President is presently vacant. Barbara Wysocka, who presently sits on the Board as Society Publicity Coordinator, has submitted her name as a candidate for this position. If anyone else in the Society wishes to run for either the position of Society President or Vice President, please speak with Rick Sobkowicz who is heading the Nominations Committee. For further details on the nomination election process and what you need to do to qualify as a candidate, please refer to the Society constitution which is on the Society’s web site (http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/constitution.html). Here is the section in the Society Constitution on the nomination process: 5.2 Nominations In advance of an election, the Board of Directors shall establish a Nomination Committee, headed by the past President, and composed of three other Society members who are not themselves subject to election, and who are not members of the Board of Directors. The Nomination Committee shall be responsible for receiving all formal nominations for any elected position. [Note: "Past President" would normally be the immediately preceding President, but if he or she is no longer available or no longer interested, then a previous President may be selected.] To be valid, each nomination must include the name of the nominee, the position for which the nominee is proposed, and the signature of at least three members. The person nominated must be a member of the Society in good standing, and agree to stand as a candidate. When considering a candidate for election, the Nomination Committee shall ensure that he or she is familiar with the Job Description of the position to which they are to be appointed (see paragraph 6.5). Nominations from the floor of the meeting will be accepted, and will have equal standing to any prior nominations. In any one election, a member may not be nominated for more than one position. Nominations shall be received no later than the closing time announced by the President at the General Meeting at which the election takes place. The job descriptions on the Board positions are also found on the Society web site or click on the following link: http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/jobdescriptions.html . Thanks to the generous donation of Stella Eyles, there were 3 such trophies commissioned for the best winning exhibit in the class of 1-5 blooming orchids.
