Dear WSLL Families and Friends,
As another fall baseball season comes to a close, it is hard to believe that a year has gone by. In
that time, we have welcomed new families to our league, and have said goodbye to some dear
friends. What will last, no matter where we go, are the memories and relationships we have
built for our children and families.
As I walk Byron, I’m continuously reminded that we are a big family. I see parents from both
teams cheering on plays, no matter the score. I see coaches and umpires giving pointers to
players from both teams. I see families catching up and enjoying each other’s company. That
is what we call the “Byron Experience” and it is as true today as it was 10 years ago. It is about
being a part of a community, where our children become better citizens, while learning and
enjoying the game of baseball.
This past spring we overcame not one, but two floods. Volunteers were lining up, before we
could put out a request to begin work on the fields. All of their hard work made our fields
playable within days. A truly amazing feat!

Over the past year, our children played in almost 500 games in the spring and over 200 hundred in the fall. That is directly the
result of our families volunteering and putting in countless hours of support as board members, managers, coaches, team parents,
umpires, concession support and various other positions.
As a league, we hosted the District 9 11/12 All Star Tournament, which was led by Kevin Kurland and a great supporting cast.
George Pederson, the Father of Fenway, was presented with a Service Award for all of his years of dedication and efforts.
Allen Judkiewicz, our Safety Officer was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year. Our umpires, led by Scott Dias and Joe Back
did an outstanding job supporting our games. I could go on and on, but the point is WSLL is a community built on the
foundation of volunteers, who strive to give our children the best possible means at playing the game they adore.
On the baseball diamond, our success continues with our tournament teams.
This past spring, in the Fun Tournament, our teams reached the final in both the 8-10 (Mills) and 10-12 (Dickson) divisions.
In All Stars, our 9-10 AL (Casamento), 10-11 NL (Adams) and 11-12 AL (Gudely) won their respective district titles, and went
deep into the Virginia State tournaments. Within District 9, WSLL is the only league to accomplish a district sweep, and we
have done it four times (2007, 2008. 2013 and 2014).
As we now turn our attention to the spring season, I look forward to seeing everyone again, down at Byron enjoying family,
friends and a game of baseball!

He stands at the plate with heart pounding fast.
The bases are loaded; the die has been cast.
Mom and Dad cannot help him, he stands all alone.
A hit at this moment would send the team home.
The ball meets the plate; he swings and he misses.
There’s a groan from the crowd,
with some boos and some hisses.
A thoughtless voice cries: “Strike out the bum.”
Tears fill his eyes; game’s no longer fun.
So open your heart and give him a break.
For it’s moments like this, a man you can make.
Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget.
He’s just a little boy and not a man yet.
