An Eagle’s eye view from the principal . . .
Congratulations to the 24 Emmons Lake students who participated in the Region 4 Odyssey of the Mind
tournament last weekend in Martin, Michigan. All four teams gave their best and represented Caledonia
well, displaying sportsmanship, good character and creativity! Team Price (Alex France, Sophia Gauthier,
Rachel Judd, Nolan Pike, Addie Price & Abigail Schnurstein) and Team Norkus (Lydia Hilton, TJ Myers,
Isabelle Myers, Ethan Norkus & Bryson VanRyn) placed in the top four of the competition. Team Kersey
(Elizabeth Hilton, Adlai Kersey, Caleb Pleune, Elijah Pleune, DJ Potgeter & Brody Siler) and Team Pearson
(Parker Chapp, Alex Hochwarth, Lauren Kosiorowski, Alexa Pearson, Allie Perna, Connor Sebel & Lily
VanDeraa) each took first place honors and will be moving on to the State competition being held at
Thornapple Kellogg School on March 20th. Great job students, we are proud of all of you!
March certainly came in like a lion! March is also reading month. I hope our students took advantage of
the snow days to complete their reading logs to qualify for Camp Read-A-Lot. Next week is the last week to
qualify. All reading logs are due by Friday, March 11. It would be great to see 100% student participation!
In late December we sent an email from CCS Superintendent, Randy Rodriguez, explaining potential
changes in the 2016-2017 school calendar for the district. Attached to this newsletter you will find an update
from Mr. Rodriguez explaining the outcome of the districts petition to the Michigan Department of
Education and what that means for the 2016-2017 school calendar.
Unfortunately, Emmons Lake will not be participating in the Girls on the Run Program this spring. We
were unable to find leadership for this program in the fall. If we wish to renew this program for Spring of
2017, we will need someone to contact us by May to indicate interest and become the Emmons Lake Site
Liaison. We realize that it can be difficult to commit at such an early date but if there is an interest in this
program for girls in grades 3-5 continuing at Emmons Lake we will need a parent/parents to step into the
leadership role.
Some of you have been asking about the 2015-2017 Emmons Lake calendar. We are awaiting final
approval from the administration office and hope to have that finalized by the end of March. Please note we
will forward a copy on to our families as soon as the approval is made.
Enjoy your weekend!

BROWN CHANGE DRIVE – EXTENDED DUE TO SNOW DAYS!
Start rounding up your pennies...the Brown Change Drive is back! Until March 7th students have
the opportunity to drop off donations at lunch. Like last year, grades will be competing against each
other for the chance to earn a pizza party! Brown change placed in their grade's jug count TOWARD
their total, while silver and dollars placed in their jug count AGAINST it. The "Brown" change (aka
penny) drive was implemented in February of 2013 to raise funds for the Caledonia Relay for Life and
to honor Ms. Brown, who was battling cancer at the time. In three years, the event has raised
$3,929.86! QUESTIONS? Contact Stephanie Pearson, [email protected]
CHS PLAYERS PRESENT CINDERELLA
This is a presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Tony Award winning musical Cinderella. It
is a surprisingly contemporary take on the classic tale. The production features all the moments you
love—the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball and more—plus some surprising new
twists! Shows are Friday, March 4 at 7:00 pm, and Saturday, March 5 at 1:00 and 7:00 pm. Tickets are
$8 in advance and $10 at the door. Visit chsplayers.org for a link to buy tickets online.

TEACHER CONFERENCE DINNERS
Spring Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner. Once again we would like to show
our support for our teachers and staff by providing dinner for them! The first night we are having a
Baked Potato Bar and the second night will consist of Subway platters with sides and desserts. There
will be an envelope in the office for Subway platter donations. Please send this money in to school no
later than March 14. We are using VolunteerSpot to coordinate our volunteers. The links are provided

CAMP READ-A-LOT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We are looking for three adults per class to chaperone students from Emmons to the High School
on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 22nd for the Pep Assembly. The teachers have a spectacular
performance planned to celebrate the student’s accomplishments. See the show up close and personal
while sitting with the students. Anticipated time frame is 12:45-3:00 pm. If you have children in
multiple grades, you will need to choose only one class to chaperone. Emmon’s Lake staff puts a lot of
time and effort into this pep assembly. To see what the hype is about take a look at the introduction
video from last year https://vimeo.com/132595893
The day at Camp-Manitou-Lin is unforgettable! We are looking for two-three adults per class to be
on hand to assist staff when needed. Unfortunately, chaperones are prohibited from bringing other
children. We appreciate your understanding. If you have children in multiple grades you can go back
and forth between grades, as the teacher will remain with the class throughout the day. Students leave
school at 9:00 am. Please arrive to camp by 9:00 a.m. to greet them off the bus.
K-2nd grades attend Wednesday, March 23rd
3-5th grades attendThursday, March 24th
Volunteers can sign up and manage information quickly and easily with Volunteer Spot. When
you access the site you will need to enter an email you wish to use for reminders from Volunteer spot
regarding your assignment. This email is not shared with third parties. When on the sign-up, scroll
down to specific assignments for Camp-Read-A-Lot. Each volunteer opportunity is listed by classroom
teacher’s name and type of chaperone activity. Pep assembly spots are listed first and then camp
below. For example, I wish to sign up for the Pep Assembly to escort Mrs. Summerfield’s class. Once
in the sign-up screen I will then scroll down alphabetically until I see Summerfield- Pep Assembly and
quickly sign up to volunteer. Be sure to uncheck the additional options for mailings and newsletters.
Detailed information for each activity is posted and a reminder will be sent closer to the date. Please
access at this link to sign up http://vols.pt/ijTKTi Thank you in advance for your willingness to help!
CAMP READ-A-LOT
We’re in the final stretch so keep reading! All reading logs are due Friday, March 11, to qualify to
attend the assembly and a day at Camp Manitou Lin. The class with the highest reading percentage in
grades K-2 and 3-5 will earn an awesome of reading party! The top three classes are:
K-2: Rossman 119.31%, Cook 118.48% and Hollern 115.22%
3-5: Summerfield 119.57%, Carpenter 114.43%, Brown 114.24%
The classroom races are very close! Great job to all of the students who have qualified!

I have personally purchased airline tickets from Delta and Southwest airlines using the ScripNow
ecard feature and many other gift cards for my family’s personal use. If you are intimidated by the
process or just don’t understand how it could work for you, please let me know and I’ll show you how
I have gotten it to work for our family. Also, if there is a need for other gift cards to keep on hand in
the office or any other questions at all, please contact Jennifer Miles at
[email protected].
BOXTOPS, LABELS FOR EDUCATION, SPARTAN UPCs
Please continue to save the Labels for Education from participating Campbell’s products to help
our school obtain free merchandise. The Boxtops for Education program helps to earn money for our
school. The Spartan UPCs are collected and counted by Miss Brown’s 3rd grade class to earn extra
money. We appreciate your help saving these UPCs to help our school earn free merchandise and
money.

March 2, 2016 Dear Caledonia Families, In late December, we sent an email to our families regarding some potential changes to the 2016 -‐ 2017 school calendar. I want to inform you that we will not start school prior to Labor Day in the fall of 2016. Our school year calendar will begin the day after Labor Day as it has in the past. Beginning in the 2016 -‐ 2017 school year, all schools in the State of Michigan are required to increase the number of days in their school calendar to 180 instructional days. Originally, Kent County public schools had chosen to apply for a waiver from the Michigan Department of Education which would grant us permission to begin school one week prior to Labor Day. After deliberation with the state, we did not meet the requirements to receive such a waiver, and therefore, we withdrew our application. We will review and distribute the final calendar prior to spring break. You can expect a shorter Christmas Break as well as an end date in early June. The calendar will also incorporate six half days for students, with teachers staying for the remainder of the day for professional development. The half days allow us to meet the state requirements of providing ongoing professional development for teachers while still meeting the minimum requirement of 180 days. Thank you for choosing Caledonia Community Schools as your partner in education. In Pursuit of Excellence, Randy Rodriguez Superintendent BOARD OF EDUCATION
